Sherman Rosco Hazelwood, age 91, of Jefferson City, passed away Tuesday, February 27, 2001 at Jefferson Memorial Hospital. Mr. Hazelwood was of the Baptist faith and was a retired farmer of Jefferson County. He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Rogers Hazelwood; daughter, Gerleen Rines; grandsons, Donald Hazelwood and Tyson McDonald; parents, Helems and Mattie Hazelwood; sisters, Geniva and Beatrice Hazelwood; brothers, Herman, Shad, Floyd, Johnas and Ray Hazelwood. He is survived by his sons, Terry Hazelwood of Jefferson City, Leon Hazelwood of Pacolet, South Carolina; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and James Johnson of Jefferson City, Pansy and Glynn McDonald of Rochelle, Georgia; Bobby G. Rines, husband of the late Gerleen Rines of Bulls Gap; brother, Jack Hazelwood of Jefferson City; grandchildren, Crystal and Mitchell Johnson, Carolyn Rines Cobble, Randall Rines, Sherry Beierschmitt, Ronald, Melissa and Leann Hazelwood; great-grandchildren, Justin Rines, Travis and Crystal Cobble, Christian and Kaley Beierschmitt, Krystlen, Rochester, Starsha, Heather, Tiffany Rines. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 2, at Farrar Funeral Home in Jefferson City with Rev. Horach Greene and Rev. Bob Griffin conducting the services. Interment icon will follow in Jefferson Memorial Gardens.

Jennie Akard Spurgeon
Jennie Akard Spurgeon, age 86, of White Pine, passed away Monday morning, February 26, 2001 at Jefferson Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. Mrs. Spurgeon was a member of First Baptist Church of Jefferson City and was a former teacher for the Jefferson County School System for many years, where she taught Bible, Biology and Aeronautics and also served as Librarian. Mrs. Spurgeon was formerly employed by Bayard Junior High School, Mt. Pleasant Junior High School and was Reference Librarian at the University of Delaware. She was the author of several indepth bibliographies. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Keebler and Nora McNabb Spurgeon; brothers, Ralph, Charlie, James and Samuel; sisters, Fannie and Elizabeth. She is survived by her life-long friend, Barbara Bartow of White Pine; sisters, Katharine Spurgeon of White Pine and Margaret Spurgeon Fletcher of Morristown; niece, Helen E. Rowles of Mississippi; nephew, Ralph Spurgeon, Jr. of Mississippi; a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 1, 2001 at Farrar Funeral Home in White Pine with Rev. James Dampier conducting the services. Interment icon will follow in Union cemetery in Newport. The family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. prior to services at the funeral home.

Aubrey Alvin Carlton
Aubrey Alvin Carlton, age 93, of Lenoir City, passed away Thursday, March 29, 2001 at Fort Sanders Loudon Hospital after a brief illness. Mr. Carlton pastored several churches in East Tennessee including Johnson City, Pigeon Forge, Maryville, Boyd’s Creek, Rutledge and Lenoir City. He held a teaching certificate from the State of Tennessee and taught school in Maryville, Rutledge, Harrison-Chilhowee Baptist Academy and Lenoir City. He received a B.S. degree from Carson-Newman College. He served as Chaplain of Baptist Health Care Center in Lenoir City from 1980-1990 and was the 1996 Alumnus of the Year of Harrison Chilhowee Baptist Academy. He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Mildred Coleman Carlton; son and daughter-in-law, Ellis and Caroline Carlton of Atlanta, Georgia; daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Joe Paul Harvey, Joyce and Bobby Davis of Lenoir City; grandchildren, Bob and Laurie Carlton of Buford, Georgia, Michael and Cathy Carlton of Jonesboro, Georgia, Forrest and Laurie Davis of Lenoir City; great-grandchildren, Murphy, Payton and Hallie Carlton and Autumn and Summer Davis. Funeral services were held Saturday, March 31, at First Baptist Church with Rev. Dick DeMerchant and Rev. Edsel West conducting the services. Interment icon followed in Lake View cemetery. Charles Michael Clevenger
Charles Michael Clevenger, age 18, of Talbott, passed away Thursday, March 29, 2001 at his home. Mr. Clevenger attended Jefferson County High School. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Bobby Eugene Clevenger; uncle, Charles William Maynard. He is survived by his parents, Mark and Susan Clevenger of Talbott; grandparents, Paul and Nola Maynard of Talbott; grandmother, Amanda Clevenger of Newport; sisters, Jessica Clevenger and Amy Clevenger, both of Talbott; special friend, Tasha Bennett of Del Rio; several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Funeral services were held Monday, April 2, at Manes Funeral Home with Rev. Bobby Hughes conducting the services. Interment icon followed in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.

James Dennis Collier
James Dennis Collier, age 62, of White Pine, passed away Thursday, March 29, 2001 at Jefferson Memorial Hospital. Mr. Collier was a Veteran of the United States Air Force. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Louise Collier. He is survived by his daughters, Linda Collier of Talbott, Tamatha Collier Baxley (William) of White Pine; brother, Tom Collier of Bruceton, Tennessee; several grandchildren. Funeral services were held Sunday, April 1, at Mayes Mortuary with Rev. Jack Greene conducting the services. Interment icon was held in Dandridge Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by V.F.W. Post #5266.

Leonard Gallaher
Leonard Gallaher, age 58, of Brazeltown, passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2001 at Royal Care of Harriman. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Katie Gallaher; brothers, Jimmy, George and Charles Gallaher; sisters, Edith Gallaher, Emma Brown and Georgia Belle Myers. He is survived by his daughter, SaVodka Gallaher; sisters, Wanda Faye Wilkerson of Athens, Valerie Gallaher of Jefferson City, Linda Joyce (Roderick) Hawkins, Lucy Marie Johnson, Mattie Pendergrass, Mary Louise Wilkerson, Josephine Goins, all of Harriman, Ruthie (Fred) Hughes of Humboldt; brother, John Gallaher of Portland, Connecticut; a host of nieces, nephews and many relatives and friends; devoted friend, Ceola Lawrence. Memorial services were held Saturday, March 31, at St. Mary’s Baptist Church in Harriman with Rev. Jesse Williams conducting the services. Eulogy was given by Rev. Willie Gallaher. Unity Mortuary of Knoxville was in charge of arrangements.

Gladston Rowe Garner
Gladston Rowe Garner, age 86, of Wake Forest, North Carolina, passed away Monday, March 26, 2001 in Raleigh, North Carolina, following a heart attack. Mr. Garner was a member of Forest Hills Baptist Church where he served as committee member and deacon. He as a retired employee of Sears & Roebuck. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Cullie Williams Garner; six siblings; grandson, Aaron Garner. He is survived by his sister, Edith McHugh of Phoenix City, Alabama; sons and daughters-in-law and 17 grandchildren, Don and Vickie Garner, Andrew and Adam of Talbott, Dan and Cheryl Garner, Nathaniel, Jonathan, Benjamin, Rachel, Michael, Stephen, Rebecca, Joseph, Isaac, Miriam and Samuel of Wake Forest, North Carolina, Tim and Denise Garner, David, Lee, Scott and Suzanne of Raleigh. Funeral services were held Friday, March 30, in Raleigh.

Danny Ray Gregg
Danny Ray Gregg, age 45, of Morristown, passed away Tuesday, March 27, 2001 at his residence. Mr. Gregg was a member of Kidwells Ridge Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Deana Diane Gregg; father, Claude Gregg. He is survived by his wife, Delaine Gregg of Morristown; mother, Sarah Gregg of Morristown; sons, Daniel, Chris and Billy Joe Gregg of Morristown; brothers, William Gregg of Jefferson City, Farris Gregg of Whitesburg; sisters, Margaret Day of Morristown, Judy Norton of Morristown and Stella Helton of Mohawk. Funeral services were held Friday, March 30, at Mayes Mortuary with Rev. Robert Norton conducting the services. Interment icon followed in Kidwells Ridge Church cemetery.

Aileen Hodges
Aileen Hodges, age 83, of Rutledge, passed away Friday, March 30, 2001 at St. Mary’s Medical Center. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Jefferson City. She and her husband were owners of Hodges Variety Store at Cherokee Dam. She was preceded in death by her husband, Conard Hodges and infant daughters, Cathy and Carol Hodges. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Coneen and Butch Ailey; grandchildren, Joel and Adam Ailey, Melody and husband, Mark Seale, all of Strawberry Plains; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 3 at 2 p.m. at Fielden Chapel with Rev. Jim Dampier and Rev. Dennis Maxey conducting the service. Interment icon will be in Jefferson Memory Gardens.

Paul S. Kinkead
Paul S. Kinkead, age 94, of Strawberry Plains, passed away Friday, March 30, 2001 at Jefferson Memorial Hospital after a lingering illness. He was a long time farmer and carpenter. He was proceeded in death by his parents, J.W. and Ona Stewart Kinkead; several brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Irene Bolin Kinkead; sons and daughters-in-law, Paul H. and Emma Kinkead, Glenn Kinkead, all of Strawberry Plains, John W. and Barbara Kinkead of Charlotte, Tn.; grandchildren, Renee and Doug Yount, Irene Jines, Harlan, Debbie, Darrell, Jeff, Winona, Bryan, Dail, and Renea Kinkead; great-grandchildren, Andy Moore, Erica Key, Marie Yount, Jade Jines, Keely, Courtney, Cristopher and Austin Kinkead; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Saturday, March 31, at Fielden Chapel with Rev. Ben Pierce conducting the service. Interment icon was in Pleasant Grove (Piney) cemetery.

Roy Edward Kinnick
Roy Edward Kinnick, age 90, of Plano, Texas, formerly of Jefferson City, passed away Thursday, March 29, 2001. Mr. Kinnick was a member and elder of First Presbyterian Church of Jefferson City. Roy attended Lincoln Memorial University and received both a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He was principal of Rush Strong School in Strawberry Plains and Dobbins-Bennett High School in Kingsport. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Phoebe Underwood Kinnick; parents, James and Della Hooper Kinnick; sister, Louie K. Douglas; brothers, Mack, Frank, William and Charlie Kinnick. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Carey Keane of Plano, Texas; grandchildren, Jennifer Murphy and husband, Jack of Powder Springs, Georgia, Scott Keane of San Francisco, California; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held Sunday, April 1, at First Presbyterian Church of Jefferson City with Dr. Bob Reno conducting the services. Interment icon followed in Jefferson Memorial Gardens.
