Harold Dean ‘Hot Dog’ Joines

Harold Dean “Hot Dog” Joines, age 69, of Alcoa, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 3, 2011, at UT Medical Center. He was a member of Sevier Heights Baptist Church. Preceded in death by; parents, Bryce and Myrtle Joines; brother, Kenneth Joines, father-in-law, Harold Brittain; and nephew, Steven Joines. Survivors include: wife of 42 years, Linda Joines; son and daughter-in-law, David and Sally Joines; daughter, Deann Joines and fiancé, Chris Kennedy; grandchildren, Kelli, Katie Beth, Allison and Jackson Joines; brother, Glenn and wife, Pat Joines; mother-in-law, Vera Brittain; nephew, Lance Joines; nieces, Scarlett Foster and Gay Myers; great-nephew, Gabriel Myers; great-niece, Calei Myers; aunt, Betty Rogers. Family and friends will assemble for graveside service and interment icon at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, December 6, 2011, at Sherwood Memorial Gardens with Rev. Keith Johnson and Rev. David Anderson officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: The American Cancer Society, 2330 Chesterfield Drive, Maryville, TN 37803. Friends may call at their convenience after 1 p.m. on Monday at Smith Funeral and Cremation Service, Maryville.

Dorothy (Dot) Scott

Dorothy (Dot) Scott of 7118 Richland Drive, Lynchburg, Va., after suffering from Parkinson’s disease for several years, was called home by God on December 2, 2011, at Virginia Baptist Hospital. She was born icon on January 31, 1930, in Maryville, to the late Docie Don Keeble and Hazel Miller Keeble. Dorothy was of the Baptist faith. For over 59 years, she was the loving wife of H. A. Scott Jr., who survives her with their daughter, Regina Scott Oster and her husband, Ken Oster. Her two grandchildren, Rachel Marie Oster and Zachary Scott Oster, all from Emmaus, Pa., also survive her. Dorothy’s other survivors include a sister, Helen Everhart (John C.) of Maryville; two brothers, Harold Keeble of Maryville, and John Keeble (Belva) of West Columbia, S.C.; along with several nieces and nephews. A brother, Allison Keeble, and two sisters-in-law, Ethel Keeble and Opal Keeble, predeceased Dorothy. She is also predeceased by her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Morris W. Scott (Lovelyn), James C. Scott, and Frances Virginia Scott Morgan (Paul). The visitation will be at Tharp Funeral Home in Lynchburg, VA on Monday, December 5, 2011, starting at 11:30 a.m. and will be followed by a short funeral service in the Tharp Chapel at 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 4504 Starkey Road, Roanoke, VA, 24018, or The Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, 650 168th Street, New York, NY, 10032, or the church/charity of your choice. Dana Lynn Young

Dana Lynn Young, age 47, of Maryville, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, December 2, 2011. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m.–3 p.m. Sunday, December 4, 2011, at Smith Trinity Chapel. Funeral service at 3 p.m. with Pastor Ron Sunderland officiating. Clarence W. Hembree

Clarence W. Hembree, age 89, of Maryville, passed away Saturday, December 3, 2011, at UT Medical Center. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Pete and Ellen Hembree; and first wife, Sarah. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia “Cindy” Hembree; son, Steve and wife, Teresa Hembree; daughter, Susan and Mike McGuire; and special friends, Byron Bond and Tressie Eisenhower. Funeral service will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, December 6, 2011, at Miller Funeral Home, Magnolia Chapel, with Rev. Lawrence Adams officiating. Family and friends will meet at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Forest Hill Cemetery icon for the interment icon service. Cecil Gary Anderson

Cecil Gary Anderson, age 54, passed away Friday, December 2, 2011, after an 8-month battle with cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, Wade and Mable Anderson; and brothers, Ray, Glenn, Eugene and Bobby Anderson. He is survived by his sons, Lance and Ali Anderson and Jody and Daisy Anderson; daughter, Buffy and David Kirkland; brothers, Wayne and Sharon, Larry and Robin, Roger and Kay, and Herman and Gina Anderson; sisters, Eileen and Mike Moffitt, Shirley and Charlie Stinnett, Joyce and Doug Boston, Geraldine Cooper, Marie and Gary Cooper, Debra Carroll and Barbara Correll. Special thanks to sister Eileen and Mike Moffitt. Funeral service will be held 7 p.m. Monday, December 5, 2011, at Miller Funeral Home, Cedar Chapel, with Rev. Ronnie Hepperly and Rev. Betty Swofford Turner

Betty Swofford Turner died Monday, November 21, 2011, at the age of 83. She was born icon in Durham, N.C., spent most of her career in Tennessee, and moved in 2008 to Wesley Woods Towers in Atlanta, Ga. She received her undergraduate degree from Greensboro College and a Masters degree from Duke University. She was a retired member of the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church and an accomplished musician who taught and served as Minister of Music at several Methodist churches during her career. She also served as the Administrator of Asbury Acres Retirement Community in Maryville, for 20 years. Born January 11, 1928, she was married to Sterling DeLoy Turner in 1953, until his death in 2008. She is survived by her children, Ann Kimsey of Atlanta, Ga., Sterling D. Turner III, of Maryville, Carol Turner of Smryna, Tenn.; and her granddaughter, Hannah Turner of Maryville. The family asks that memorials, in lieu of flowers, be made to Glenn Memorial UMC, 1660 N. Decatur Road, Atlanta GA 30307, or The Foundation of Wesley Woods, 1817 Clifton Road, Atlanta GA 30329. A memorial service will be held in the Chapel of Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church, 11 a.m., Saturday, December 10, 2011. There will be a reception after the service. Arrangements by A. S. Tommy Wiley Baker

Tommy Wiley Baker, 81, of Maryville, passed away Friday, November 25, 2011. He was a well-known carpenter, cabinet maker, and rocking chair builder. He was preceded in death by his son, Steven Ray Baker; daughter, Sharon Baker Hunt; parents, Tom and Beulah Baker of Tellico; four brothers; four sisters. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Drusilla Stinnett Baker; children, Wayne and Juanita Baker, Debbie and Danny Frye; grandchildren, Wayne and Stephanie Baker, Crystal and Adam Myers, Steven and Amy Baker, Sherry and Darrell Tidwell; five great-grandchildren; brother, Roy Baker; sister, Mary Thorne; brothers-in-law: Jim and John Stinnett, special sister-in-law: Barbara Dvorak. Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday, November 26, 2011, at Memorial Funeral Home in Maryville with Rev. Shane Humbert officiating. John Fredrick Clark

John Fredrick Clark, (August 12, 1934-November 23, 2011). John Clark passed away Wednesday, November 23. 20111, at Blount Memorial Hospital. He was a member of Carpenter’s Methodist Church. John was preceded in death by his parents, KB and Reba Clark. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Yvonne; and his sons, Kent (Jayme) of Kingwood, Texas, and Joel (Jacki) of Branford, Fla. John is also survived by two granddaughters, Kaitlyn (San Diego, Calif.) and Peyton (Cleveland, Texas); mother-in-law, Osceola Cooper (Maryville); and siblings, Joe (Mildred) of Eustis, Fla., Carlene Stinnett of Maryville, and Tom (Shirley) of Maryville. Family and friends will assemble for graveside service at 3 p.m. Sunday, November 27, 2011, at Carpenter’s Methodist Church Cemetery icon with Rev. George Macht officiating. Mary Jane (Cook) Berry

Mary Jane (Cook) Berry, age 63, of Greenback passed away Tuesday November 22, 2011, at UT Medical Center after a short battle with ALS. Janie was a very devoted Christian, wife, daughter, mother, grandmother, sister and loving friend. She was a treasure to everyone she met. She was a member of Pine Grove Presbyterian Church in Greenback and loved her church dearly. Preceded in death by her father, Clinton Cook; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Edith and Clifford Berry of Lenoir City; brothers-in-law, Gilbert Berry of Lenoir City and Gene Stinnett of Memphis. She leaves behind the love of her life, husband of 45 years, Joe Berry of Greenback; son, Tim Berry and daughter-in-law, Angie Berry of Loudon; daughter, Kim Hooks of Atlantic Beach, Florida; grandchildren: Joshua and Savannah Berry of Loudon and Avery and Nathan Hooks of Atlantic Beach, Florida; mother, Louise Cook of Lenoir City; sister and spouse, Pat and James Amburn of Greenback, sister, Debbie Cook of Lenoir City; brothers and spouses, Gary and Trish Cook of Lenoir City, Ray and Debbie Cook of Lenoir City, Tony and May Ellen Cook of Greenville, South Carolina; sisters-in-law and spouses, Myrtle and Jay Howard of Madisonville, Lynn Stinnett of Memphis, Jackie and Billy MacDonald of Lenoir City; brothers-in-law and spouses, Bill and Sue Berry of Lenoir City, Leroy and Debbie Berry of Lenoir City, Tommy and Renee Berry of Greenback, J.W. Doris B. Holloway

Doris B. Holloway, age 94, of Maryville, passed away Tuesday, November 22, 2011, in Shannondale of Maryville Skilled Care, after general health decline following a stroke. Born June 11, 1917, in Gibson, Tenn., she was a graduate of the University of Tennessee in home economics and was Blount County Home Demonstration Agent for several years, until moving into the classroom. She was a wonderful fourth grade teacher at Sam Houston Elementary School from which she had retired over 30 years ago. Widowed in 1969 at age 52 with the sudden death of her husband, she confidently moved on enjoying her family, travel, good friends, and many bridge clubs. She was a member of Broadway United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death in 1969 by husband, James “Jim” N. Holloway Sr., who was a manager at ALCOA. Survivors include son Steven H. Holloway and wife Jacqueline of Carmel, Ind., granddaughter Stephanie Kirk and husband Jeffry Kirk II, great-grandchildren Mackenzie Holloway, Daniel Johnson, and Josephine Nash Kirk and grandson Craig James Holloway; son, James N. “Newt” Holloway Jr. and wife Betty, Aiken, S.C., also survive with son Jim, wife Susan and great grandson James Burford Holloway of Charlotte, N.C., and twin daughters Katie Holloway and Kristi Eitel and husband Chuck of Atlanta, Ga. Burial with family will be in Grandview Cemetery icon Monday, Nov. 28, at 10 a.m. Family will receive friends afterward at McCammon Ammons Click Funeral Home at 11 a.m. with a service following there at noon. The family wishes to thank the caring and professional staff at Shannondale Retirement Center and Skilled Care for the wonderful comfort given over the last six years. Beeler of Knoxville; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Leslie and Gary Leatherwood of Maryville; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Rick and Angie Martindale of Dandridge, Scott and Lisa Martindale of Canton, Ga., Mark and Wendy Martindale of Maryville, Rob and Michelle Martindale of Johnson City, Tenn.; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
