Martha Jo "Miss Jo" McClure Derrick
Martha Jo "Miss Jo" McClure Derrick, 77, of Riceville, died Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, at Willow Acres Assisted Living in Riceville.
A native of Hamilton County, she had been a resident of McMinn County for 55 years. A daughter of the late Thomas Fern and Flossie Eustice McClure, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Morris Derrick, on Sept. 17, 1986. She was retired from Bowater Paper Corporation and was of the Baptist faith.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Clay and Michele Derrick of Athens; two daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and John Allen of Riceville, and Pam and Willis Ledford of Etowah; five grandchildren, Angie Allen, John Allen Jr., Blake Derrick, English Derrick and Tammy Weeks; one sister, Corrine Poe of Soddy-Daisy; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were 8 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home. Burial was 11 a.m. Monday in McMinn Memory Gardens.
The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Jewel R. Arnold
Jewel R. Arnold, 72, of Decatur, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, at his residence.
A native of lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late James Samuel Arnold Sr. and Daisy Lee Carpenter Arnold. He was a farmer and a lifelong member of Rogers Creek Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon for 36 years. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Ailene Monroe, Mildred Miller and Mary Sue Keaton.
Survivors include one brother, Junior Arnold of Decatur; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Faye McAllister of Riceville, and Berta and Clyde Davis of Decatur; and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to say a special thank you to Avalon Hospice Care.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Rogers Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Howard White and the Rev. Mark Cameron officiating. Burial will follow in Rogers Creek cemetery. The body will lie in-state from 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
Pallbearers will be Jerry Davis, Scott McAllister, Keith Arnold, Dan Buckner, Cecil Watson and David Leonard.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home.

Clarence "Slim" Wyatt
Clarence "Slim" Wyatt, 83, of Athens, departed this life on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, at Life Care Center of Athens, to meet his wife of 47 years, Grace Sneed Wyatt, in their eternal home.
He was born in McMinn County on July 21, 1925, to the late Lester Roy and Ada Mae Thomas Wyatt, and had made his home in his later years at Willow Acres Assisted Living in Riceville. He retired from Vestal Manufacturing in Sweetwater, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and Englewood Masonic Lodge. Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one infant son, Ronald Wyatt; and two sisters, Mary Sue Plaster Toomey and Nanny Plaster.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Shelia and David Mason of Englewood; one son, Don Wyatt of Athens; three grandchildren and one spouse, Matthew and Missy Mason of Ashboro, N.C., Angela Mason of Englewood, and Chris Wyatt of Athens; three great-grandchildren, Cory, Kaitlyn and Noah Mason, all of Ashboro, N.C.; one sister and brother-in-law, Estelle and Dudley McDonald of Carrollton, Ga.; several nieces and nephews; and Willow Acres staff and friends.
Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Plaster, the Rev. Bob Thomas and the Rev. John Smith officiating. Burial will be 11 a.m. Tuesday in McMinn Memory Gardens.
Active pallbearers will be Matt Mason, Chris Wyatt, Cory Mason, Noah Mason, Bill Vicars, Dan Saffles, Jimmy Baker and Jerry Wilson. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the King David Sunday School Class.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Laurie Ann Malick
Laurie Ann Malick, 48, of Athens, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009, at her residence.
A native of Sarasota, Fla., and a resident of McMinn County for the past 21 years, she was the daughter of the late Arthur Claude and Betty Bell Malick. She attended Athens Lutheran Church, and was co-owner of the Sister Act Cleaning Service. She was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous and was preceded in death by one brother, Gary Malick.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Heather Malick of Etowah; one sister and brother-in-law, Leslie Lee and J.V. Myers of Niota; one nephew and spouse, Gary and Paula Myers; a great-nephew and great-niece, Brady Myers and Kelsey Myers; one granddaughter, Emily "Nana's Princess" Malick; and a special friend from A.A., Annette Seargeant.
A memorial service will be 7 p.m. Thursday at First Christian Church in Etowah with the Rev. Max Redman.

Herbert Lynn Cranfield
Herbert Lynn Cranfield, 55, of Riceville, went to be with the Lord on Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, at his residence after a year-long battle with cancer.
A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late James Clifton and Wilma Marie Lillard Cranfield. He was preceded in death by one sister, Claudia Woods; two nephews, Victor "Butch" Woods and Travis Cranfield; two sisters-in-law, Carol and Karen; and one brother, Lillard Cranfield. He was employed by Athens Products for more than 30 years, and then by Texas Hydraulics. He was of the Baptist faith and was a member of Eastanallee Baptist Church. He grew up in the Tranquility community, where he was known for his athletic abilities in basketball and softball. He held many records at E.K. Baker grammar school and then at McMinn County High School. He was a member of the Webb Plumbing softball team and was one of the first members of the White Oaks Golf Club.
Survivors include his teenage sweetheart and wife of 34 years, Diana Weir Cranfield of Riceville; two wonderful children, daughter, Brooke Cranfield Wilson of Knoxville, and son, Brent Cranfield of Atlanta, Ga.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, James "Bud" and Carolyn Cranfield of Trenton, and Ray and Carla Cranfield of Cleveland; his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Clyde and Betty Weir of Riceville; two brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law, Donnie and Janice Weir of Lamontville, and Franklin Woods of Athens; and special nieces and nephews, Treva, Tracie, Ashley, Seth, Tonya, Rebecca and Donnie Lee.
Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Oran Creasman and the Rev. Ralph Jenkins officiating. Burial will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Eastanallee cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Ray Lovingood Sr., Ray Lovingood Jr., T.R. Casteel, Jackie Plaster, Mike Trotter and Jason Lovingood. Honorary pallbearers will be the White Oaks Golf Team.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Susanna Irene Sanders
Susanna Irene Sanders, age 95, a resident of Cleveland, passed away Wednesday, December 12, 2001 in a local healthcare facility. She was a member of Bancroft Church of God. Mrs. Sanders was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Eulala Melinda Junior Vines and was also preceded in death by her husband, William Jackson Sanders.

She is survived by four children: Rosie Mae Flowers of Cleveland, Cora Elizabeth Wooden of Ocoee, Jessie Wilbert "Buddy" Sanders of Charleston, Margaret Marie Martin and Virginia Lucille Underwood, both of Dalton, Georgia; twenty-one grandchildren, thirty three great-grandchildren and several great great-grandchildren; two sisters: Grace Flowers of Cleveland, and Mary Ellen Clifton of Ruskin, Florida; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with Rev. Buck Hughes and Rev. Ronnie Kesley officiating. Interment icon will follow in Prospect cemetery.

Her family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

James "Jim" D. Elmore

James "Jim" D. Elmore, age 72, a resident of Cleveland, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, December 19, 2001 in a local hospital. He formerly associated with Bradley Realty and was a well-known Cleveland businessman. Mr. Elmore retired from the U. S. Navy as a Chief Petty Officer after twenty years of service. He was an active member of Westwood Baptist Church where he served on the Counting Committee and was active in the Senior Adult Ministry. His mother, Irma Randolph Elmore, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Marge Elmore of Cleveland; father, Ben L. Elmore of Cleveland; one son, Randy Elmore of Lexington, Kentucky; three grandchildren: Misty Mikel of Studio City, California, Candice Annette Elmore of Great Lakes, Illinois, and James Cameron Elmore of Etowah; four brothers: Benny Elmore of Cleveland, Bill Elmore of Byron, Georgia, Bob Elmore of Pigeon Forge, and Harry Elmore of Cleveland; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with Pastor Bob Bell and Pastor Bill Ingram officiating. Interment icon will follow in Chattanooga National cemetery with Harold Shell, John Ross, Dee Burris, Jerry Cross, John Paul Douglas and Chuck Taylor serving as pallbearers. His Sunday School Class at Westwood will serve as honorary pallbearers.

His family requests that memorials be made to the Westwood Building Fund, Westwood Baptist Church, 4001 Georgetown Road NW, Cleveland, TN 37312.

His family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Helen J. Johns

Helen J. Johns, age 81, a resident of Ft. Myers, Florida, passed away Friday, December 14, 2001 at her home. She was born in Malden, Missouri and was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. L. O. and Ora Wicecarver. Mrs. Johns was a graduate of Missouri Baptist School of Nursing. She was Past Worthy Matron of the Webster Groves (Missouri) Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and was a member of the White Shrine of Jerusalem. She was of the Methodist faith.

She is survived by her loving husband, Maynard Johns of Ft. Myers, Florida; two sons: Richard L. George of Barnhart, Missouri, and Robert L. George of Cleveland; one daughter, Nancy Schiller of Annapolis, Maryland; six grandchildren: Karen Merrifield and Merridith Weiler, both of St. Louis, Missouri, Luther George and Sean George, both of Columbia, Missouri, Lauri George Soong of Hamden, Connecticut, and Sarah George of Normal, Illinois; three great-grandchildren: Aaron George and Timothy George of Columbia, Missouri, and Ian Merrifield of St. Louis, Missouri.

A memorial service was held at Cypress Gardens in Ft. Myers on Monday with the Reverend Hal Simons officiating.
Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church Family Life Center, 3425 North Ocoee St., Cleveland, TN 37311.

Donald L. Castleberry

Donald L. Castleberry, 77, a resident of Cleveland, passed away Wednesday, December 19, 2001 in a local healthcare facility. He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy and a member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. Mr. Castleberry was the son of the late Arthur and Pearl Sides Castleberry.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanne Appleton Castleberry of Cleveland; daughter, Cynthia Lewis of Cleveland; two sons: Jeffery Castleberry of Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, and David Castleberry of Montgomery, Alabama; five grandchildren; one brother, S. W. Castleberry of Birmingham, Alabama; one sister, Ruth Manasco of Jasper, Alabama; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with Dr. Robert Haskins officiating. Interment icon will follow with military honors in Sunset Memorial Gardens with Bart Lewis, David Castleberry, Jeffery Castleberry, Forrest Allen and Jim Burner serving as pallbearers.

His family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Michael Terry Horvath

Michael Terry Horvath, age 43, a resident of Cleveland, passed away Thursday, December 20, 2001 at his home. He was employed with Viking Spas and was a member of Parkway Baptist Church. His father, Robert Horvath, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his mother, Lucille Hawkins Horvath of Cleveland; three sisters: Joy Cross, Gale Moore and Judy Rogers, all of Cleveland; and several nieces and nephews.

Private memorial services will be held at a later time. Arrangements were made by Ralph Buckner Funeral Home and Cremation Services.

J. L. Nipper

J. L. Nipper, age 77, a lifelong resident of Cleveland, passed away Wednesday, December 19, 2001 in a Chattanooga hospital. He was retired from Cleveland Utilities and was a well-known local horse trainer. Mr. Nipper was a member of several local organizations including the Horse Trainers Association, Walking Horse Boosters Club, and was an inductee in the Old Timers Club Hall of Fame in Basketball. He was also a strong supporter of the Tri-State Agriculture Center and was instrumental in its development. He attended First Baptist Church in Cleveland. His parents, Claude and Myrtle Cissom Nipper, preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife, Billie Rymer Nipper of Cleveland; two children and spouses: Joel and Patrice Nipper of Cleveland, and Jeanna and Darrell Officer of Cleveland; three grandchildren: Janessa Nipper Boggess and husband Frankie, Jennifer Dee Officer and Zachary John Nipper Officer, all of Cleveland; one great-grandchild, Tristen Boggess of Cleveland; one brother and sister-in-law, R. C. and Wilma Nipper of Cleveland; and special extended family: Susan Holmes and her two children: Jonathan Holmes and Caitlin Holmes, all of Cleveland, and Nora Moore also of Cleveland.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Griffith and Rev. Tazz Reid officiating. Interment icon will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens with Jason Kibler, Jody Kibler, Jimmy Kibler, Stacey Rymer, Scott Nipper, Carl Dill, Stacey Green and Sam Fort serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers include John Simmons, Ronald Freeman, J.J. Oxford, Glen Curtis, Max Shelton and James Barger.

His family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Warren G. Woody

Warren G. Woody, age 80, a resident of Benton, passed away Wednesday, December 19, 2001 in a local hospital. He had lived in Polk County most of his life and attended Welcome Valley Baptist Church. He was the son of the late James G. and Bessie Shelton Woody and was also preceded in death by two brothers: William Taft Woody and J. D. Woody.

He is survived by two sisters: Janie Cheatham and Mary Magnola Casson, both of Benton; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Higgins Funeral Home with Rev. Carl Duckworth officiating. Interment icon will follow in Benton Memorial Gardens.

His family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Kenneth F. "Ken" Fairman
Kenneth F. "Ken" Fairman, 49, died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2009, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, after a long battle with MS.
He was born Feb. 14, 1959, in Norfolk, Va., and was a resident of McMinn County since 1999. He was of the Lutheran faith, and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving on the USS Charles F. Adams and participating in Operation Desert Storm. He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Fairman on April 30, 2008; one sister, Lori Fairman Smith; and one brother, Steven Fairman.
Survivors include his father, Mancil F. Fairman of Athens; four sisters and two brothers-in-law, Kathy Smith of Athens, Frances and Ron Hein of Dillsburg, Pa., Mary Blair of Smithville, Texas, and Charolett and Mike Weeks of Hinesville, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 8 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Roger Fairman officiating. Burial will be 10 a.m. Thursday in McMinn Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
