Emily Catherine Hobgood
Died: 04/03/2000
Emily Catherine Hobgood, 79, of Crofton, Maryland, died April 3 at Anne Arundel Medical Center.

She was born in Hartford, Tennessee, on February 22, 1921. She was the fifth of six children born to William and Charlotte Clark.

Emily is survived by her husband, Charles B. Hobgood; son, Jim Dennison, Arlington, Virginia; daughter, Linda Benjamin, Crofton, Maryland; brothers, Paul Clark, Manassas, Virginia, and Louis Clark, Lynchburg, Virginia; four grandchildren, Michael, Jennifer, Dana and Holly; and three great-grandchildren, Katie, Jonathan and Sarah.

In 1937, about 13 years after Emily’s father passed away, she relocated to the Washington, D.C. area, with her mother and five siblings. Together they applied for their first bank loan and built a large white house on U Street, SE. According to her brothers, Emily’s main contribution to that activity was carrying a hammer. This house came to be known as Grandma’s house.

When Emily met C.B., it was love at first sight. They met at a downtown restaurant. The story has been told that Emily was working as a cashier when C.B. and his friend, Bob, entered the restaurant. Emily was so smitten by him that she arranged to wait on their table and give the tip to the regular waitress. That evening she expressed to her mother "that today she had met the man she was going to marry." As a result, C.B. fell "head over heels" for Emily. On March 25, 2000, they celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary.

Those of you who knew her well have fond memories of her wonderful splash of humor, her love for God, her love for her family and her love for her multitude of friends whose lives were touched in a very special way.

Emily’s passion for bowling began at a Boulevard Heights Baptist Church bowling league. As her skills in this area developed, she became a bowling instructor for adults and children. Over the years she earned many trophies and awards as a result of mastery of bowling. Other hobbies that she enjoyed were collecting U.S. state souvenir spoons, novelty plates, and a variety of unique knick-knacks.

Emily delighted in meeting the needs of her various family members. She was a faithful, loving companion of C.B., a friend and devoted parent to Linda and Jim. Emily, with C.B.’s blessing, shared her time, talents and any material possession with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her nieces and nephews were included in this generosity-whom she treated as her own children.

Serving the Lord was her greatest joy. Emily loved music and faithfully sang in the church choir for many years and often participated in drama presentations. She had a heart for children and taught Sunday School for many years. Her administrative skills allowed her to serve in leadership roles such as Sunday School superintendent, Baptist Training Union director and visitation coordinator.

Emily spent last weekend visiting with her family and friends. On Monday morning, after a peaceful night’s sleep, she moved to her heavenly mansion.

Emily lived so that she could say with the apostle Paul, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day-and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing."

Visitation will be Thursday, April 6, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the Hardesty Funeral Home P.A., 851 Annapolis Rd., Gambrills, Maryland.

The funeral will be Friday, April 7, at 1 p.m., in the Emanuel Baptist Church, 515 Waugh Chapel Rd., Gambrills, Maryland. Burial will be 3:30 p.m. Friday at Mount Olivet cemetery, Frederick, Maryland.

Donations may be made to Emanuel Baptist Church.

Hardesty Funeral Home P.A., Gambrills, Maryland, is in charge.
