During World War II she worked as a secretary on the Manhattan Project at Oak Ridge. She later was employed by the Knox County School system. She was a long time member of Meridian Baptist Church. Preceded in death by parents, Edgar and Alice Hayes.

She worked as a clerk in the Records Division at the Knoxville Police Department and as an administrative assistant in the Purchasing Department at St. Mary's Hospital.
