Virginia Sherwood
Virginia Sherwood, age 78, 706 Sharon Drive, died Wednesday, October 10, 2001 at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following a brief illness.
Mrs. Sherwood was a native of Atlanta, Georgia and had lived in Johnson City since 1962. She was a member of Heritage Baptist Church. Mrs. Sherwood operated the switchboard for Sherwood Chevrolet, the family businesses which were located in Johnson City, Atlanta and Greeneville, South Carolina over a period of 20 years. She also owned and operated The Southern Lady Shop in downtown Johnson City for about 10 years. Mrs. Sherwood loved animals and provided care for several pets including two cats, a rabbit and her loyal companion poodle, Rocky. Her parents, Polk C. Brockman and Dorothy Morris, and a sister preceded her in death. Survivors include her husband of 55 years, Ed Sherwood of Johnson City; two sons, Ken Sherwood and Larry Sherwood of Johnson City; one sister, Mary Ewing of Daytona Shores, Florida; six grandchildren, Gini Batey of Knoxville, Lisi Baer of Virginia Beach Virginia, Kristie Sherwood of Jonesborough, KeriAnne Sherwood of Johnson City, Stacey Sherwood of San Antoino, TX and Steve Sherwood of Alpharetta, GA; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Notice
Funeral services for Mrs. Sherwood will be held Friday, October 12, 2001 at 4:00 PM from Heritage Baptist Church with Dr. Reggie Weems officiating. Interment icon will follow in Monte Vista Burial Park. Pallbearers, who are requested to meet at the church by 3:30 PM will be, Brownie King, Doyle Cloyd, Harold Lyons, Dr. Robert Allen, Wayne Miller, Glenn Taylor, Bob May and Randy Humphries. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorials be given to Heritage Baptist Church, 1512 John Exum Parkway, Johnson City, TN 37604. Paul B. Tittle
Paul B. Tittle, age 85, Asbury Center, Suite 7, 400 N. Boone Street, died Thursday, October 4, 2001 at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following a brief illness. A native of Erwin, Mr. Tittle was a son of the late Charles E. and Minnie Tapp Tittle. He was a retired Chief of Patient Control in Medical Administration at the Veterans Administration Hospital. Mr. Tittle was a veteran having served World War 11 in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Survivors include his wife, Maudie Martin Tittle of the home; three brothers, Sam Tittle of Unicoi, W.O. Tittle of Erwin and Tom Tittle of Johnson City; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services for Paul B. Tittle, age 85, Asbury Center, Suite 7, who died Thursday, will be held Saturday, October 6, 2001 at 11:00 AM from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Pastor Steven Harmon officiating. Entombment will follow in Monte Vista Burial Park. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorials be given to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 201 E. Edward L. Barr
Edward L. Barr, 80, 208 Oak Lane, Johnson City, died Monday, October 1, 2001, at his residence. Mr. Barr was a native of Bristol, VA, and had been a resident of Johnson City for most of his life. He was the son of the late A.E. and Alma Russell Barr. Mr. Barr was retired from Tennessee Eastman Company, with forty years of service. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Barr was a member of the Johnson City Masonic Lodge #486 F&AM, and the Jericho Temple. He was a member of the Elizabethton VFW Post #2166.
Mr. Barr was a World War II Army veteran, having served in Europe and the Philippines. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Fox Barr; three nephews, Mike Fox, Unicoi, Tony Barr, Morrisville, NC, Howell Barr, Apex, NC; one cousin, Dr. Kyle Barr, Bristol, TN. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Earl Eugene Schill
Earl Eugene Schill, age 76, 1807 E. Watauga Avenue, died Friday, September 7, 2001 at his residence following a lengthy illness. A Johnson City native, Mr. Schill was a son of the late Harry Melvin and Dicie Obsorne Schill. Mr. Schill was a retired nursing assistant from the Veterans Administration Medical Center Hospital. He was a veteran having served in World War 11 with the United States Army Air Corps. Mr. Schill was a former member of the Johnson City Moose Lodge. He attended Piney Grove Freewill Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, his wife, Edith Florence Swartz Schill preceded him in death in 1995 as well as one daughter, four sisters and Survivors include three sons, Allen Schill of Mocksville, North Carolina, Ronald E. Schill and Gary D. Schill both of Johnson City; one sister, Betty Rutherford of Augusta, Georgia; two grandchildren, Kenneth Schill of Franklin and Amy Whittaker of Piney Flats; two great-grandchildren.Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Maynard V. Cade
Maynard V. Cade, 77, 2482 Lakewood Dr., Johnson City, died Tuesday, September 4, 2001, at the James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center Hospital, following a brief illness. Mr. Cade was a native and lifelong resident of Johnson City. He was a son of the late Hubert and Frances Mathes Cade.
Mr. Cade was a retired self-employed construction worker. He was a protestant. Mr. Cade was a World War II Army Air Corp veteran.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Gladys Warren and Beulah Cade.
Survivors include his wife, Lois White Cade; two daughters, Wanda Lockner, Johnson City, Nancy Johnson, Taylors, SC; one brother, Gentry Hammett, Johnson City; four grandchildren, Jeffrey Johnson, Greenville, SC, Kim Gabrel, Taylors, SC, Jennifer Lockner and Ben Lockner, both of Johnson City; three great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Donnie Humphrey, officiating. Interment icon will follow in Mountain Home National cemetery, with military honors being accorded by the Kingsport American Legion Hammond Post #3. Richard Dean McInturff, Age 85, 806 East Unaka Avenue, died Wednesday, September 5, 2001 at his residence following a brief illness. A native of Oliver Springs Mr. McInturff was the son of Sylvia Smith Litton and the late Howard McInturff. Mr. McInturff was a self-employed painter. He was a veteran and served in the U.S. army. Edward Marion Stanley
Edward Marion Stanley, 402 E. 8th Avenue, Johnson City, died Saturday, August 25, 2001 unexpectedly at his residence. A native of New London, New Hampshire, Mr. Stanley was a son of the late Benton C. and Bernice Morley Stanley. Mr. Stanley was a Chemical Engineer having received his Bachelors of Science Degree from the University of Florida. Mr. Stanley was the owner of Associated Engineering Consultants. He was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Catherine Stanley, of the home; one son, Robert Stanley, Church Hill; two daughters, Barbara McCray, Greensboro, NC and Cathy Bomba, Unicoi; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren. Joseph "Wayne" Hicks
Joseph "Wayne" Hicks, age 64, 308 Amity Lane, died Friday, August 24, 2001 at North Side Hospital following a lengthy illness. A native of Washington County, Mr. Hicks was a son of the late Thomas C. and Alma Cozad Hicks. Mr. Hicks was a retired photographer from WJHL-TV where he worked for 25 years. He was active in many area Miss America Pageants. He was former chairman of the Miss Johnson City Pageant, co-founder of the Miss Historic Jonesborough Pageant, co-founder of the Miss Erwin Pageant as well as the Miss ETSU Pageant. Mr. Hicks served as producer and director of the Miss Johnson City Pageant for many years. He had also judged many pageants throughout the area. Mr. Hicks was a long-time member of the Johnson City Jaycees where he had worked on numerous community projects. He was also a former member of the Jonesborough Civitan Club. He was of the Christian faith. Survivors include his wife, Pat Hicks of the home; one son, David W. Hicks of Bristol, Virginia, one daughter, Sherry Hicks McNabb of Erwin; four grandchildren, Clay McNabb, Chase McNabb, Matthew Hicks and Kayla Hicks: several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Joseph Wayne Hicks, age 64, 308 Amity Lane, who died Friday will be held Sunday, August 26, 2001 at 4:00 P.M. from the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Rev. Gary Harless and Rev. Joe Moran officiating. Graveside services will be conducted Monday at 11:00 A.M. from Roselawn Memory Gardens. Those wishing to attend graveside services are asked to meet at the cemetery by 11:00 A.M. Mr.
Hicks is also survived by two special nephews, Bill Hicks of Birchwood and David M. Hicks of Johnson City. Active pallbearers who are asked to meet at the funeral home Sunday by 3:30 P.M will be Basil Blackburn, Kevin Cable, Wayne Cable, Bob Lewis, Emil Messimer, Mike Powers, Mark Rutherford and Hargus White. Mrs. Jessie Ruth Shipley Brandon
Mrs. Jessie Ruth Shipley Brandon, 99, 2102 Camelot Circle, Johnson City, died Monday, August 20, 2001, at Lake Bridge Health Care Center. Mrs. Brandon was a native and lifelong Washington County resident. She was a daughter of the late George B. and Sarah Mountie McClain Shipley. Mrs. Brandon was employed at the former Jones Hospital as a Licensed Practical Nurse and later retired from the Appalachian Christian Village at 83 years of age. She was a member of East Unaka Avenue Christian Church, where she was a longtime Sunday School teacher and a member of the Loyal Women's and Fidelis Sunday School Classes. She was an active member of the Women's Quilters of East Unaka Avenue Christian Church. Mrs. Brandon was 50 year member and Past Worthy Matron of the Nolichucky Chapter of the Eastern Star. She is preceded in death by her husband, John Thomas Brandon, 1986, two sons, Walt "Buddy" Brandon, in 1980, and Johnny Brandon, in 1952; five brothers, John Henry Shipley, Joe Shipley, G.B. Shipley, Russell Shipley and Asa Shipley; six sisters, Sadie Hendrix, Maggie Clark, Blanche Cobble, Lois Whittington, Nancy Booth and Mary Johnson. Mrs. Brandon is survived by two daughters, Patsy Dessauer, Johnson City, Lois Brandon Crutchfield, Gainesville, FL; nine grandchildren, Debbie Deakins, Johnson City, Mark Dessauer, Kingsport, Kim Owens, Johnson City, Amy MacMillian, Gainsville, FL, Anne Wagoner, Ocoee, FL, Kathy Robideau, Walt Brandon, John Brandon, and Susan Kellogg all of Eugene, OR; thirteen great grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Violet Helen Blalock Murray, age 82, 218 Moody Lane, Kingsport, died Sunday, August 19, 2001 at Holston Valley Medical Center. Mrs. Murray was a native of Johnson City where she had lived most of her life before moving to Kingsport in 1984. She was a daughter of the late Oscar E. Blalock, Sr. and Ruth Compton Blalock Osborne. Mrs. Murray was a homemaker. She was a charter member of Piney Grove Park United Methodist Church and attended Tri-Cities Baptist Church, Gray. Mrs. Murray was preceded in death by her husband, Elbert W. Murray in 1979; her step-father, Dave Osborne, one infant daughter; one brother, two half brothers, one half sister; one step-brother, two step-sisters. She is survived by one daughter, Phyllis Murray Ramey, Kingsport; four sons, Texas A. Murray, Johnson City, Ronald E. Murray, Jonesborough, Donald L. Murray, Gray, Michael D. Mrs. Sylvia Wilson, age 82, 2409 Sinking Creek Road, died Friday, August 18, 2001 at Appalachian Christian Village following a lengthy illness. A Washington County native, Mrs. Wilson was a daughter of the late Monroe Barnett and Lucy Barnett Barnett. Mrs. Wilson was a homemaker. She was a member of the Berea Free Will Baptist Church. Her husband, Billy Lee Wilson in 2000, preceded Mrs. Wilson in death. Survivors include one son, Billy Wilson of Johnson City; one sister, Elva Mae Simmons of Johnson City; one grandson, Aaron Wilson of Johnson City; one granddaughter, Christy Wilson of Johnson City; one great-grandson, Joshua Morton of Johnson City.

Aaron Russ, Jr.
Aaron Russ, Jr., 805 Forest Avenue, Johnson City, Tennessee died Friday, August 18, 2001 at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following a brief illness. A native of Honaker, Virginia, Mr. Russ was the son of the late Aaron
Russ and Lona E. Davis Russ. Mr. Russ was retired from Pet Dairy where he worked from 1942-1968. He was director of purchasing for Pet Dairy. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he was deacon emeritus at the church. Mr. Russ was an avid golfer and also fishing and bowling. Survivors include his wife, Katherine S. Russ of the home; one son, Aaron Russ 111 of Carrollton, Texas; one sister, Elizabeth (Toots) Harmon of Williamsburg, Virginia; one grandson, Michael Aaron Russ of Richardson, Texas; one granddaughter, Susan Russ Hines of Denton, Texas.
