H. McHenry Richardson
Former TVA engineer

H. McHenry Richardson, 96, of Norris, died Monday, June 22, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Richardson was an engineer who had worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority starting in 1933, soon after the agency was established. He had worked his way through the University of Tennessee, earning a degree in engineering in 1929.

He was a longtime member of the Norris Religious Fellowship.

He is survived by his wife, Sara Cheek Richardson; his son and daughter-in-law, Frank M. and Sherry Richardson of Denver, Colo.; two grandchildren, Cameron Richardson of Franklin, N.C., and Scott Richardson of Portugal; and his sister, Jenny Lee Hupple of Orlando, Fla.

A graveside service was to be held at 11 this morning, June 24, at Norris Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Robert M. Puckett and the Rev. Keith Haverkamp officiating.

The family requests that any memorials be in the form of contributions to the Norris Religious Fellowship, P.O. Box 267, Norris, TN 37828.

Mildred Irene Alexander
Longtime Oak Ridge resident

Mildred Irene Alexander, 78, of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday, July 22, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge after a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Alexander was a homemaker. She was the widow of Gentry B. Alexander, who was retired from the Oak Ridge Y-12 Plant.

She is survived by three daughters, Judy Alexander of Oak Ridge, Betty Hopson of Fort Royal, Va., and Mavis Alexander of Lebanon, Va.; a son, Jimmy Alexander of Wartburg; and eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, another son, Kenneth E. Alexander, died earlier.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 24, at McCarty Woodhaven Memory Gardens in Claxton.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, July 23, at Anderson County Funeral Home in Clinton.

Sarah Noell Wilson
First United Methodist member

Sarah Noell Wilson of Oak Ridge died Tuesday, July 21, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Wilson had been a member of First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge since 1994. Previously, she was a member of Church Street United Methodist Church of Knoxville.

She was born in Oglethorpe County, Ga., the daughter of Maude Birchmore and John Thomas Noell. After graduating with honors from the University of Georgia, she went to work for the Frank March Advertising Agency in Atlanta as a copywriter. Subsequently she was employed with Sears, Roebuck and Co., and at the time of her retirement in 1941, she was advertising manager of the Sears store in Knoxville.

Mrs. Wilson was affiliated with the United Daughters of the Confederacy, the Association for the Preservation of Tennessee Antiquities and the American Association of University Women. She had also worked as a volunteer at the University of Tennessee Medical Center at Knoxville.

She was the widow of Clyde M. Wilson.

Mrs. Wilson is survived by her children, Marialice Wilson and her husband, Calvin Wenzel of Anderson County, and Noell Wilson and his wife, Barbara, of Carrollton, Ga., and four grandchildren, Mark Ferguson of Chicago, Ill., Lara Dare Ferguson of Fort Collins, Colo., and Christopher Wilson and Gillian Wilson, both of Carrollton.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 25, at Highland Memorial cemetery in Knoxville with the Rev. William H. Balch officiating.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to Church Street United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1303, Knoxville, TN 37901, or to First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 4669, Oak Ridge, TN 37831.

Janet Sue Brown
ORNL secretary

Janet Sue Brown of Harriman died Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center at Knoxville.

Mrs. Brown was a secretary at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where she had worked for 25 years.

She was a native of Oliver Springs and had lived in this area all her life.

Mrs. Brown was a member of Beech Park Baptist Church of Oliver Springs. Her hobby was cooking, her family said.

She is survived by her mother, Mabel Tinker Davis of Oliver Springs; two daughters, Christy Brown of Harriman and Kimberly Seiber and her husband, Allen, of Oliver Springs; a grandchild, Allison Seiber of Oliver Springs; four sisters, Faye Owens and her husband, Don, of Oliver Springs, Betty Cross and Carolyn McKinney and her husband, Arkie, all of Kingston, and Evelyn Daugherty and her husband, Glenn, of Harriman; and two brothers, Jerome Davis and his wife, Kathryn, and Don Davis and his wife, Carolyn, all of Oliver Springs.

Her father, Floyd D. Davis, and another sister, Mary Branson, died earlier.

The funeral will be held at 8:30 tonight, Sept. 23, in the chapel of Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs. The Rev. Gary Smith will officiate.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, at Anderson Memorial Gardens, Oliver Springs Highway, Clinton.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

William David Campbell
Son of area residents

William David Campbell, 43, of Lancing, died Sunday, Sept. 27, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mr. Campbell is survived by his parents, Mary Campbell of Oak Ridge and Charles Campbell Sr. of Oliver Springs; his sister, Gayle Alford of Knoxville; and his brother, Charles Campbell Jr. of Lenoir City.

A riverside memorial service will be held at 7 tonight, Sept. 29, at the Lilly Bridge in Lancing.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to Shady Grove Baptist Church, 19 Shady Grove Road, Lancing, TN 37770.

Schubert Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

John W. Hughey
Retired Carbide fire chief

John W. Hughey, 86, of Bartlett, died Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, at Primary Health Care and Rehabilitation Center in Memphis of a stroke.

Mr. Hughey began his career as a firefighter with the city of Memphis and was retired as fire chief and supervisor of plant protection for Union Carbide Nuclear Division for the federal plants in Oak Ridge and Paducah, Ky.

He was decorated for daring rescues by the city of Memphis fire department. As a firefighter on a ladder truck in 1937, Mr. Hughey smashed a bedroom window in a burning house, crawled inside and groped his way through the smoke until he felt an infant in his crib. He grabbed the child, crawled back outside and handed the child to his grandmother.

Mr. Hughey was honored for bravery and was later promoted to the rank of lieutenant. He left Memphis in 1940 and assumed the position of fire chief of the Wolf Creek Ordnance plant in Milan.

He subsequently served as fire chief and supervisor of plant protection at the federal nuclear installations at Oak Ridge during World War II and at the Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Paducah.

Mr. Hughey also participated in the development of nuclear fire protection systems for the Nautilus, the United States' first nuclear-powered submarine.

Following his retirement in 1977, he was a citrus grower in Polk City, Fla., where he served as treasurer and board member for the Dun-D Citrus Growers Corp., and represented Florida Citrus Growers in Washington, D.C.

He was a graduate of Messick High School in Memphis and attended the University of Tennessee and Purdue University. He was a member of Ellendale Baptist Church and was president of the Kentucky Industrial Fire Prevention Council.

Mr. Hughey is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary E. Hughey; his daughter, Betty Parsons, of Dallas, Texas; his son, John R. Hughey, M.D., of Bartlett; and five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

The funeral was held at noon Monday, Sept. 28, in the chapel of Memphis Funeral Home in Germantown.

Burial followed at Memory Hill Gardens in Germantown.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to the Shriners' Burn Institute, 3229 Burnett Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45229-3095; or to the Methodist LeBonheur Healthcare Foundation, 850 Poplar Ave., Building 1, Memphis, TN 38105.

Gladys Markland Brandenburg
Church worker, bridge player

Gladys Markland Brandenburg, 90, of Oak Ridge, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, at Prices Home for the Elderly in Knoxville.

Mrs. Brandenburg had been a resident of Oak Ridge since 1978. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Oak Ridge and had worked at church functions in earlier years.

She was an avid bridge player.

Mrs. Brandenburg was born in Fish Springs, Tenn., but at an early age moved to Virginia, where she lived for many years.

She enjoyed work as a volunteer for the Salvation Army League of Mercy Auxiliary in Cincinnati, Ohio, and was awarded a certificate of appreciation for 15 years of service.

She was the widow of Edgar Brandenburg. Her parents, Walter Chrisley and Appie Ward Markland, are both deceased.

Mrs. Brandenburg is survived by a sister, Jean Mooney of Oak Ridge; two brothers, Charles L. Markland of Augusta, Ga., and Chritz F. Markland of Clovis, Calif.; several nieces and nephews, Brenda Knoch of Oak Ridge, Pamela Aultman of Albany, Ga., Cathy Villinus of Athens, Ga., Fern Anderson of Morristown, Chris Mooney of Knoxville, Jim Markland and Larry Markland, both of Clovis, Roger Markland of Florida and Randy Markland of Texas.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 9, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park with the Rev. Dwyn Mounger officiating.

The family requests any memorials be in the form of donations to a Salvation Army unit of the donor's choice.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight, Jan. 8, at Weatherford Mortuary.

Mary Florence Bridges
Retired mill worker

Mary Florence Bridges, 72, of Oliver Springs, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Bridges was retired from Burlington Mills in Harriman where she had worked for 29 years.

She was born in the Wheat community on Feb. 23, 1925, the daughter of Oscar and Dixie Walker McNew. She had lived in the Oliver Springs area all of her life. She was the widow of Letcher Bridges.

She was a member of New Fairview Baptist Church.

Mrs. Bridges is survived by two daughters, Roena Ann Cothran of Loudon and Mary Jequeta Sexton and her husband, Tim, of Oliver Springs; a son, Silas Dewayne Bridges and his wife, Mary Faye, of Oliver Springs; a sister, Nell Andes of Oliver Springs; and a brother, Raymond McNew of Lenoir City.

Thomas Cothran of Loudon was considered a special friend.

She is also survived by nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, at New Fairview Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenny Bridges and the Rev. Donnie Harvey officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight, Jan. 8, at Sharp Funeral Home in Oliver Springs.

Gloria Jane Jasny
PEO, AAUW member

Gloria Jane Jasny, 69, of 106 Dixie Lane, died Wednesday morning, Jan. 7, 1998, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Jasny was a member of Chapter R of the PEO Sisterhood and a member of the American Association of University Women.

She was also a member of the United Church, Chapel on the Hill, and was active with the United Church Women.

She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on May 9, 1928, the daughter of Olive Pruitt and Gordon Robert Jones. As a child, she moved with her family to South Carolina, where she attended high school. A graduate of Limestone College in Gaffney, S.C., she held a bachelor of science degree in biology.

She came to Oak Ridge in 1949 and worked for a short time in the Biology Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Mrs. Jasny considered her role as homemaker as her career rather than an obligation, according to her husband, George R. Jasny, who survives her. When her children were young, she was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader and was active in the PTA at her children's schools. She enjoyed reading and was noted for her book reviews, and she also enjoyed gardening, hiking and taking walks with her dog.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Pruitt Jasny of San Francisco, Calif.; a son, Thomas Paul Jasny and his wife, Terry, of McKinney, Texas; a sister, Lynda Magee and her husband, William, of Northville, Mich.; and two grandchildren, Aaron Jasny and Benjamin Jasny, both of McKinney.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, at the United Church, Chapel on the Hill, 85 Kentucky Ave., with the Rev. Boyd Carter officiating.

The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall of the church following the memorial service.

The body was cremated, and the remains were to be buried in a private service at the church's Memorial Garden.

The family requests that any memorials be in the form of donations to the United Church, Chapel on the Hill, 85 Kentucky Ave., Oak Ridge; to the Methodist Hospital Foundation, 990 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830; or to a charity of the donor's choice.
