Scott Field Bailey

The Rt. Rev. Scott Field Bailey, Retired Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas, died in San Antonio on Saturday, April 9, 2005.
Bishop Bailey was born 7 October 1916 in Houston, TX. where he received his early education.
He received his BA degree in 1938 from Rice University, after which he attended the University of Texas Law School and the Virginia Theological Seminary, obtaining his Master in Divinity degree in 1942.
He was ordained a deacon and priest by Bishop Clinton S. Quin.
In 1953, he received the Master of Sacred Theology degree from the University of the South.
Later, Doctor of Divinity degrees were conferred upon him by the Virginia Seminary, the University of the South, and the Seminary of the Southwest.
Bishop Bailey began his ministry in 1942 at St. Paul’s Church, Waco, where he was associate rector as well as priest-in-charge of St. Mary’s Church, Lampasas.
From 1943 to 1946, he served as Chaplain in the U.S. Navy, having duty in Connecticut, New York, and the South Pacific.
In 1946, he became rector of Christ Church, Nacogdoches, and priest-in-charge of Christ Church, San Augustine.
In 1951, he was called to be rector of All Saint’s Church, Austin, and Director of Episcopal Student Activities at the University of Texas.
He founded St. Andrews Episcopal School in Austin and has been instrumental in the life of St. Stephen’s Episcopal School in Austin.
In 1961, Bishop Bailey moved to the Diocesan headquarters in Houston as Administrative Assistant to the Bishop of Texas and was designated by the Diocesan Council as Canon to the Ordinary.
He was elected Bishop Suffragan of the Diocese of Texas in 1964 and served there until 1975 when he was named Bishop Coadjutor of the Diocese of West Texas.
Upon the retirement of Bishop Gosnell, Bishop Bailey was instituted as the Sixth Bishop of West Texas on 17 February 1977.
Bishop Bailey was Secretary of the House of Bishops of the Episcopal Church from 1967 until 1988.
He was President of the Church Historical Society, 1967 – 1986, and Chairman of the Board of the Archives of the Episcopal Church for its inception in 1985 until 1996.
In 1974, he was appointed the Executive Officer of the General Convention of the Episcopal Church and continued in that capacity through 1976.
During the ten years that he was Bishop of West Texas, he served St. Mary’s Hall and Texas Military Institute as Chairman of the Board of Trustees.
Bishop Bailey retired as Bishop of West Texas 12 February 1987, and has made his home in San Antonio at the Towers on Parklane.
Bishop Bailey is survived by his wife, the former Evelyn Louise Williams; four children, Louise (Mrs. Allen Taylor), Nicholas, Scott, Jr., and Sarah (Mrs. Hugh A. Fitzsimons III); seven grandchildren, Nicholas Bailey, Katherine Bailey, Asa, Patrick and Evelyn Fitzsimons, Clayton and Bailey Taylor; and two great-grandchildren, Hudson and Griffin Taylor.
Scott Field will always be remembered by his family and friends for his quiet presence, his kind, compassionate, reassuring, warm and loving manner.
He was the most exceptional man, and the very essence of who a man should be; forging love and compassion into a strength of character that spoke volumes to everyone.
He helped people realize the love of God within themselves and the love that God has for all people.

Col. Marvin Stephen Sims USAF (Ret.)

Col. Marvin S. Sims, retired US Air Force, age 86, died Thursday, April 7, 2005 at his home in San Antonio. He was born November 1, 1918 on a farm near Brazil, Indiana. He attended high school in Putnamville, Indiana and graduated from Greencastle High School. At age 21 he joined the Air Force and in February 1941, he arrived at Kelly Field.
Sims was first assigned as an assistant crew chief on At-6A aircraft. He was sent to Rantoul Air Force Base for air mechanics school. From there he went to Luke Air Force Base where a new base was being carved out of brush and sand. Luke AFB opened a gunnery range in Ajo, Arizona where they maintained targets for gun ships rotating every 30 days, as they were living in tents.
He requested transfer to the flying cadets to train as a pilot and in 1942 was assigned to the Southwest Training Command. While there he completed training for Stearman bi-wing aircraft, BT-13 aircraft and for advanced training in the AT-6A aircraft. After single engine fighter training, he was assigned to a multi-engine transition, B-17’s in Jimmy Stewart’s squadron at Cowen Field, Boise, Idaho. He was later sent to a B-24 outfits in Pocatello, Idaho and Topeka, Kansas for preparation to go overseas.
They embarked on the Empress of Japan, which had been librated from the Japanese, arriving in Casablanca as replacements for a mission over Ploesti, Rumania. They moved to Bengazi, where they were in the 98th bomb wing, hitting targets in Rumania, Italy, Germany, Poland and Yugoslavia. Then they moved to a dry lake bed in Tripoli where they stayed until the rainy season, getting out just before the lake filled up. His next tour was in Brindsi, Italy where he flew over 50 missions. In 1944, Sims went to Chanute Field for more training then was assigned to Grand Island, Nebraska as Flight Test Pilot.
The base commander John Kane, was the leader of the 98th Bomb group flying infamous low level raids on the Ploesti oil fields which suffered a 50% loss of B-24 aircraft. After two years at Grand Island, Sims received an offer to go to Alaska with Major Maynard White. In July 1947 he boarded a plane to Fairbanks. The B-29’s they took to Alaska had been modified and were equipped with Curtis electrical propellers, witch tanks, N-1 gyros and other navigational aids. The mission was to service test the Grid Navigational system and map the northern continent of Alaska and the Artic Ocean. The coming winter experienced temperatures of -55 to -60 degrees below zero.
While in Alaska, Sims met a school teacher from Vernon, Texas named Lula Kate Johnson. They were married in 1947. Sims was transferred to Eilson Air Base where he became air inspector. His next assignment was the 2nd SSS Strategic Support Squadron in El Paso, Texas, where he carried out missions for S.A.C. in C54 aircraft to Alaska, England, Bermuda, Puerto Rico, and the Azores. After a year in El Paso they moved to Roswell Air Force Base and later to Merced, California. In 1955, he was assigned to the 374th troop carrier wing, then to the 315th Air Division in Tachikawa, Japan providing C-124 aircraft support to Seoul, Korea, Okinawa, the Philippines, Iwo Jima, and all of Japan.
Upon returning to the US, he entered the class of 1958-1959 at the Air Command and Staff College in Montgomery, Alabama. He was then assigned to the Depot in Middletown, Pennsylvania where he was Production Control Chief, supervising about 5, 000 people. During this period, he completed training at Headquarters AFLC Logistic School in Wright Patterson, Ohio. He also completed two years of college courses during this period. Sims retired as a Colonel on August 31, 1964 after 24 years of service and moved with his family to San Antonio, going to work for the civil service at Kelly AFB and retiring in 1983.
He served on the city council of Shavano Park. His military career yielded him several honors including; an Air Medal, a Distinguished Unit Citation Emblem, a Good Conduct Medal, and a Commendation Ribbon. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Lula Kate Sims and is survived by his children, Marvin Sims II of Boise, Idaho, Barbara Hayden of Fredericksburg, TX, his grandchildren, Marvin Sims, III of San Antonio, Jared Sims of Chapel Hill, N. C., and Christie Hayden of San Antonio.

Elsie Sultemeier Atwood

Elsie Sultemeier Atwood passed away on Thursday, April 14, 2005. Daughter of Herman and Lena Sultemeier of Post Oak, TX, Elsie was 88 years old.
She is preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters. Elsie is survived by her loving sister, Ollie Carr and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Cloretha P. Young went to be with the Lord on Friday, April 8, 2005.
She was born in Mossville, La. She moved to San Antonio in 1947 and became a member of Antioch Baptist Church.
Survivors include a brother, Postel Perkins; a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Margarette Brown
Born in Rosenberg, Texas on Sep. 28, 1932

Margarette Zievert Brown was born September 28, 1932 in Fort Bend County, Texas to Chester and Mary Zievert.
She passed away April 6, 2005 as a result of Alzheimer’s disease.
Margarette and Dixon traveled extensively throughout the world, especially her favorite Scotland, making many friends along the way.
She was a volunteer at Coker Methodist Church for many years, worked at Howard Elementary for 14 years teaching Vietnamese students the English language on a one on one basis.
She was active in various Hollywood Park organizations, especially the Volunteer Fire Department.
For the past 23 years, she has been very active with the Alzafar Shrine Highlanders Bag Pipe Band.
Margarette is survived by her husband of 52 years, Dixon O. Brown; two children, daughter, Cindy, husband Jay Miller of Dallas, TX; son, Craig and wife, Darla Brown; two grandchildren, Davis and Hannah Brown of Rockport, TX; and countless friends and family.
Honorary Pallbearers will be the entire Alzafar Bag Pipe Band.
She will be cremated and her ashes scattered in a private family service on the land she loved in Bergheim.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her honor to the Alzheimer’s Association, 7400 Louis Pasteur, Ste 200, San Antonio, TX 78229, the Alzafar Shrine for Shriner’s Hospitals, 901 North Loop 1604 E., San Antonio, TX 78232 or Charity of Choice.

Devin McKinnon

Devin McKinnon, 23 months, began his journey to his Heavenly Home April 3rd, after a brief sudden illness.
He was a joy and inspiration to all his family and extended family and friends.
He was the light of our lives and now he rests in peace.
He is survived by his parents, Ethan and Heather McKinnon; his brother, Lil’ Ethan; and many loving family members.

James O'Brien Young

James O’Brien Young died on April 7 in San Antonio. He was born on February 18, 1918 to Mr. and Mrs. J.O.B. Young in Port Arthur, TX.
After his local education he studied music with voice as a major. Mr. Young received his B.M. from Roosevelt University in Chicago and his M.M. from the University of Houston. He was a teacher in Michigan for over 30 years.
His Texas heritage goes back 157 years when his Grandfather Simon Young came from County Tipperary, Ireland to Victoria, TX in 1857.
Mr. Young was a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing. His other passion was travel.
His many trips include 2 journeys to Israel to study the Old and New Testament and several tours to Europe, Canada, and Mexico. His last trip was in 2004 when he made a rail tour across Canada.
He is survived by many cousins, especially Mrs. Delores Stancik of Vanderbilt, TX. His friends in San Antonio will miss his humor and wit.
He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church of San Antonio (510 Belknap) where the 11:30 a.m. Holy Communion Service on April 15 will be dedicated to his memory.

Richard John Pfrang

Richard John Pfrang, Lt. Colonel USAF retired, age 79 died April 7, 2005 at his home in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on January 13, 1926 in Niagara Falls, New York. He was born to the late Conrad and Clara Pfrang. He joined the United States Air Force in 1943 after his graduation from high school. During his 29 years in the Air Force, he served in Okinawa, Ramstein, Sacramento, Vietnam, The Air Force Academy, Pentagon, and Randolph. During this period he earned a Bachelors of Arts from Sacramento State College, Masters of Science in Personnel Administration from George Washington University, and a Master of Science in International Affairs from George Washington University. Upon his Air Force retirement in 1972, he became a partner in Porter Lee Custom Homes. He enjoyed traveling throughout the world and was an avid supporter of the arts having San Antonio Symphony season tickets and being a member of “Friends of the McNay”. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Louise; son, Richard Pfrang and his sister, Jeraldine Hildebrandt. He is survived by his sons, Thomas Pfrang, Patrick Pfrang (Ayumi), Peter Pfrang (Rosalinda), and Paul Pfrang; daughter-in-law, Eve Pfrang-Kuhlmann; grandchildren, Bree, Brian, Jared, Zachary, and Addison; great-grandchild; Penelope; companion of 20 years, Mary Elizabeth York and numerous nephews and nieces.
