Colonel William E. “Gene” Sharp was born on November 18, 1918, just one week after the Armistice was signed ending The Great War.
He was born into a pioneer family in Walla Walla, Washington.
He belonged to the Congregational Church and the Boy Scouts of America.
During high school he was on the Wa-Hi school newspaper and in ROTC in both high school and college.
He was a pre-med student at Washington State University in Pullman where he met a sophomore business student, Virginia Scott of Kelso, Washington, fell in love, and proposed two weeks later.
Gene and Scottie were married for 63 years.
While in college, Sharp was a member of Delta Upsilon fraternity and the pre-med honor society.
He also received a commercial pilot’s license. Two weeks after completing his flight training as an Air Corps cadet (Class of 41-G at Stockton, CA), Pearl Harbor was bombed and Sharp became a pilot instructor.
His career in the Air Force spanned almost thirty years. He was stationed in various countries and bases around the world: Peru; Bergstrom AFB, TX; Barksdale AFB, LA; Vance AFB, OK; BW-1, Narsarsuak, Greenland; Maxwell AFB, AL; Site Y-11, Rabat Salé, Morocco; Pentagon, Washington, DC; Hickam AFB, HI; Randolph AFB, TX.
Among his awards in the military were the Peruvian Air Cross for accomplishments as director of flight training for the American Republic’s Project of Peru and the Legion of Merit for exemplary service on the Joint Chief’s of Staff.
He held posts in the Air Staff, office of the joint chief of staff, Air University, Headquarters Pacific Air Forces, was deputy commander of the 316th Air Division in northern Africa, and was deputy chief of staff for plans of the Headquarters Air Training Command at Randolph AFB here in San Antonio.
He was a graduate of the Air Command and Staff College. After retiring in 1970 to Shavano Park, TX, he was elected mayor in a landslide write-in campaign and served from 1975 to 1983.
While there, he also served as chairman to the Bexar County Council of Mayors and was responsible for transportation infrastructure in and around San Antonio.
He was a member of Castle Hills First Baptist Church and on various committees.
He also served several terms as president of the San Antonio International Gun Club.
The Sharps moved to Air Force Village II in 1997. There the Sharps became involved with the Protestant Bible Study class between visits to relatives in Washington, Idaho, and Paris, France.
Gene’s passion during the last few years was completing the famly genealogy and a history of the Sharp family dating back to Laubenheim, Germany in the seventeenth century.
Col. Sharp was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Eugene Sharp and Mary Bates Sharp; his beloved wife, Virginia “Scottie” Sharp; two sons, William Eugene Jr., and Mark Alan; his brother Charles L. Sharp, and his sister Eva May Crothers-Saunders.
He is survived by his son and daughter in law Dennis and Jane Sharp of Durham, NC; daughter and son-in-law, Sarah-Lynne “Susie” and Jean-Marie Le Canu of Kingwood, TX; nephews John E. Sharp of Spokane, WA, and Steven Crothers of Vancouver, WA; and niece Kay Bell of Dayton, WA; nine grandchildren and two great-granddaughters; and many, many friends

Nancy Elizabeth Van de Putte Wade
Born in San Antonio, TX on Oct. 4, 1955
Died Apr. 2, 2005 and resided in San Antonio, TX.

Nancy Elizabeth Van de Putte Wade passed away on Saturday, April 2, 2005.
She is survived by her husband, Tom Wade and daughter, Annette Whiting of Brenham, TX; parents, Henry Van de Putte, Sr. of Castroville, TX; Elizabeth and Robert Hodnett of Devine, TX; father and mother-in-law, Thomas and Dorothy Wade; brother, Pete Van de Putte and wife, Leticia of San Antonio, TX; sisters, Judy Murray and husband, Jack of Seminole, TX; Sally Van de Putte and husband, Rocky Rochelle, TX; and Glenda Kruger of San Antonio, TX and numerous nieces and nephews.
Nancy was an occupational therapist for over thirty years.
She was passionate in helping others and through her profession was able to improve their quality of life.
She was a devoted wife and loving mother.

Donald Edward Everett
Born in Auburn, AL on Dec. 10, 1920
Died Jul. 6, 2004 and resided in San Antonio, TX.

Donald Edward Everett, born December 10, 1920 in Auburn, Alabama died Tuesday, July 06, 2004 in San Antonio.
He received the B.A. degree from the University of Florida and served in the United States Army Air Corp near London, 1942 to 1945. Thereafter, he received the M.A. and PhD Degrees from Tulane University where he was a Ford Fellow. Joining the history department at Trinity University in 1953, he would serve as chairman for twelve years before he retired in 1991. A sustaining member of Phi Beta Kappa, his listing had included the Directory of American Scholars, the Directory of Contemporary authors, Who’s Who in America and recognition as a Minnie Stevens Piper Professor in Texas and a Dr. Z.T. Scott Professor at Trinity.
A pioneer in the study of free persons of color in the ante-bellum South, upon coming to San Antonio, he turned to local social history. Author or editor of seven books, his articles appeared in the Handbook of Texas, the Southwestern Historical Quarterly, the Journal of Negro History, the Journal of Southern History and newspapers. His San Antonio: The Flavor of Its Past, 1845-1898, cited by the San Antonio Conservation Society, and a later volume, San Antonio Legacy, contained his favorite “some true, some not so true, ” stories from the San Antonio Express, 1865-1930.
Chaplain Davis and Hood’s Texas Brigade (1962) for which he received a citation from the Texas Civil War Commission became a collector’s item and was reprinted by the Louisiana State University Press. Another citation, from the Texas State Historical Committee and the Texas Historical Foundation, recognized his “distinguished service” to historical preservation.
Focus on San Antonio history could also be found in a centennial record of Trinity University, a sesquicentennial history of the First Presbyterian Church in which he was an Elder, and a history of the Monte Vista Historical District.
Among the founders of the Monte Vista Historical Association, he served as past president. Other activities included past president of the local Torch Club and the San Antonio Historical Association.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary Lou Melançon Everett and his son, John Lauchlin Everett, both of San Antonio; daughter, Mary Everett Potter and her husband, Robert McLean Potter and their daughters, Page McLaurin and Christina McLean Potter, all of St. Petersburg, Florida.
Family members wish to express their appreciation to Dr. Lewis F. Russell, Jr., Dr. Stephen Coken, and Dr. Paul H. Smith, Jr. for their years of kindness and professional attention.
Dr. Everett’s remains will be interred in the Columbarium of the First Presbyterian Church.
Should friends desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity University toward the Everett Scholarship Fund established by the Triniteers or to the charity of their choice.

Thomas Edward Benninger

Thomas Edward Benninger passed away on Sunday, September 4, 2005, at the age of 36.
Thomas was born on September 13, 1968, in Honolulu, Hawaii. He was a devoted father and husband.
Thomas was a 1992 graduate of Texas Tech University and the New England Culinary Institute. Thomas was the Executive Chef and proprietor of the restaurant, Gladys at the Strand, which opened in November 2001.
He is survived by his wife, Michelle Ann Benninger; a son, Christian Anthony Benninger; his parents, Nelda Faye and Edward Charles Benninger; a sister and brother-in-law, Bridget Sheri and Michael A. Psaromatis; aunts, Barbara Ann Allen, Suzanne Marie Jeansonne and Lydna Grace Gilreath; and the devoted patrons of his restaurant.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations please be made to a Trust Fund for Michelle and Christian Benninger at P.O. Box 782326, San Antonio, TX 78278.

Dorothy Jeane Dixon

Dorothy Jeane Dixon, age 80, passed away on Sunday, October 16, 2005 in Johnson City, Texas.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Bobby Dixon of San Antonio; son, Wesley Earl Dixon and wife Natalie of San Antonio; daughter, Barbara Lafferty of San Antonio; and son, Bobby Dixon and wife Debbie of Brownwood; grandchildren, Alaine Lafferty, Matthew Dixon, Malorie Dixon, Mitchell Dixon and Marshall Dixon; and sister, Norma Reece of Seguin.
Memorial Contributions may be made to Community Bible Church Children’s Building Fund.

John E. Stiba

John E. Stiba of San Antonio, TX, age 84 passed away Sunday, October 16, 2005.
He proudly served his country in World War II in the US Navy. He was employed with USAA for over 20 years, serving as their Vice President in the Claims Department.
John was a committed family man and instilled in his daughters and grandchildren the importance of education. He was preceded in death by his wife of 37 years Charlotte R. Stiba.
John is survived by his daughters, Vicky S. Porterfield and her husband John of Austin, TX and Jeanie Postell and her husband Mark of San Antonio, TX; grandchildren, Aimee Martin and husband Scott from Houston, Elisa Garrett and husband Nick from Ft. Worth, Kristin Postell, student at UTSA, Kyle Postell, student at UT-Austin, and Claire Postell, high school student in San Antonio. He is also survived by one brother, Ernest Stiba; and three sisters, Ruth Geist, Lydia Kasper, and Inez Schrader; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Papaw paid for the college education of himself, his two daughters, and five grandchildren.
Many sincere thanks to Mr. Stiba's special caretakers, Minerva and Sylvia, who helped, prayed, nursed and cared for him until the very end of his life.
Donations may be given to your favorite church or charity.
Friends and family are invited for a meal served at Community Bible Church following the interment.

George Milton Johnson

George Milton Johnson, age 71, died on Saturday, October 15, 2005.
He was born in San Antonio, Texas on September 28, 1934 and was a life long resident of this city.
He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Ellen Zimmerman Johnson and son, David Milton Johnson of San Antonio; twin brother, Douglas E. Johnson, M.D. of Marathon, TX; niece, Kathryn Anderson Medford and husband, Larry of Houston, TX; nephews, James C. Anderson, Jr. and wife, Maria of Long Island, NY; Max Johnson and wife, Kimberley of Lockhart, TX; George Johnson and wife, Norma of San Antonio, TX; Michael Johnson of Marathon, TX; aunt, Mrs. Sam D. Head of Houston, TX; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Joe and Barbara Zimmerman of Dallas, TX; numerous great nieces, great nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Max E. Johnson, M.D., his mother, Elizabeth McGehee Johnson, his sister, Elizabeth Johnson Anderson and her husband, James C. Anderson.
Milton Johnson was a graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School and Princeton University, with a degree in Geological Engineering, and was active for 40 years as an Independent Geologist in the Oil and Gas industry in South Texas.
He enjoyed traveling, hunting and fishing, especially fly fishing with his brother-in-law, Joe Zimmerman, in Colorado. His favorite times were spent at “Greenlawns”, their country home on the Medina River near Medina City, TX.
He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church and a visiting member of St. Christopher’s Episcopal Church in Bandera, TX.
He was a member of various professional geological societies, including South Texas Geological Society and SIPES; The San Antonio German Club, Past President; The Order of the Alamo; The Texas Cavaliers; Conopus Club of San Antonio, Past President; The San Antonio Country Club and The Argyle Club.
