Nihal Ratnayeke went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday morning, December 20, 2005 after a brief illness. He was surrounded by his family at the time of his passing on.
He was born in Sri Lanka on September 3, 1933 to Sonny and Brenda Ratnayeke. He graduated high school from St. Joseph’s in Colombo, Sri Lanka. In 1952, Nihal was selected one of several thousand applicants to join the Royal Ceylon Air Force and go to UK to attend RAF College Cranwell, the oldest Air Force College in the world. In July1955, he graduated from RAF College Cranwell, UK. He also attained the rank of Senior Flight Cadet and was awarded the 'Hicks' Memorial Trophy for best in class for aerobatics – the first Asian pilot to win this award. He attended the 50th anniversary of graduating from Cranwell in June 2005.
During his career he served the Royal Air Force, Royal Ceylon Air Force, Air Ceylon, Singapore Air Force and Singapore Airlines. 50 years ago, on December 19, 1955, upon returning home to Sri Lanka, he met his beautiful wife, they fell in love instantly, proposed to within 2 hours of first meeting and she accepted and got married a year later on December 22, 1956.
Nihal was an active member of St. Anthony de Padua Church where he served as an Eucharistic Minister, a member of the liturgical committee and actively involved in the restoration of the Little Shrine of San Anthony de Padua. Nihal was a member of St. Benedict, a member of The Society of Lady of Guadalupe, a 3rd degree in the Knights of Columbus, Council 8738 and a “Sir Knight” in The Knights of Columbus, Assembly1102.
Preceded by his parents, father-in-law and mother-in-law James and Lillian Jayawardena, sister-in-law and husband Winitha and KS Perera, brother-in-law and wife Gamini and Malika Jayawardena, Sri Lanka.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Thilaka Rohini, son & daughter-in-law Neomal and Valerie, son Nilkamal, son and daughter-in-law Nilan and Tanny, son and daughter-in-law Julian Nihal and Laura, grandchildren Michelle, James, Nalin, Neesha, Naveen, Neela, Joshua and Ronali, and nephews Kushan and Dilshan all of San Antonio, TX. He was also survived by brother-in-law and wife Wickrama and Lakshmi, brother-in-law and wife Mahinda and Shirleen and 15 nephews, nieces, and several grand nephews and nieces in Sri Lanka.
Nihal will lie in state at home.

Helene Elizabeth Krueger Byrd

Helene Elizabeth Krueger Byrd, beloved aunt, passed away on Sunday, December 18, 2005.
She is survived by her nieces, Mickie Anderson, Lee Collins, Paula Starkey and Liz Lewis; nephew, Patrick Collins; great nephews and nieces and their children.
She was greatly loved by many people. Her family and friends were blessed to have known her.

Berrilynn Scantland, age 39, passed away on Friday, December 16, 2005 in Abilene, Texas.
She graduated from Abilene Christian University where she met her husband, Lee. She had a love for painting and music.
She is survived by her husband, Lee Scantland of San Antonio; children, Jonathon Brad-Lee, Jennifer Lynn, and Jake Hudson Scantland all of San Antonio; parents, Betty and Brad Burkhart; brother, Bradley Burkhart; sisters, Brandi Campbell and Britney Young; in-laws, Nancy and Louis Scantland of San Antonio; sister-in-law, Beth Ann Woolfolk of San Antonio; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

George A. Street

Mr. George A. Street, age 89 passed away in San Antonio, TX on Sunday, December 18, 2005 after a lengthy illness.
He attended Alamo Heights High School as a sophomore, Brackenridge High School as a junior and Thomas Jefferson High School as a senior graduating in the class of 1933. Mr. Street also attended Texas A&M; University for 3 years and Washington and Lee University for 2 years in Lexington, Virginia and finished with the class of 1940.
Mr. Street worked for Pan Am Airlines in various cities in South America.
After the start of WWII, he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and later transferred to the US Army Air Corp. He served the majority of his time in India. After completing his military service, he returned to San Antonio and engaged in many business activities.
Mr. Street was preceded in death by his mother and father, Lillian Ranney Street and Hall P. Street; brother, Park Street; sisters, Virginia Street Hammond and Lillian Street Schutz; and nieces, Joline S. Robinson and Billie S. Jeffers.
He is survived by his brother, Joseph G. Street of San Antonio, Texas; nephews, Hall Park Street III of Austin, Texas; Ben Hammond, Jr. of Spring Branch, Texas; and Hall S. Hammond, of San Antonio, Texas; nieces, Lynn Schutz Mims, Diane Schutz Reser and Virginia S. Koehl, all of San Antonio, Texas.
Mr. Street will be deeply missed by his family.

Bert Zausmer

Bert Zausmer, born November 19, 1925 in Detroit, Michigan, passed away December 19, 2005.
Bert Zausmer proudly served in the Army Air Corp during World War II, and upon discharge, he attended the University of Michigan.
Before graduating, Bert met his future wife, Isabel Serkin. Bert and Isabel were married in Detroit, January 16, 1951, remaining devoted to each other for 54 years. They had three children: Gary, Audrey, and Laura.
Success in his advertising career earned Bert national recognition, and in 1956, he and his family moved to San Antonio, Texas, after being recruited to join Pitluk Advertising. He later worked for Brooks, Johnson, and Zausmer Advertising before starting his own agency, Zausmer and Associates. Bert was well known for catchy slogans, persuasive copy, and creative approaches.
Bert Zausmer was a Mason and active in civic and community affairs. He was President of the San Antonio Chapter of the American Advertising Federation and was on the Board of Directors for the Lighthouse for the Blind and Congregation Agudas Achim and a member of the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce.
Bert Zausmer was preceded in death by his parents, Lena and Harry Zausmer and brother, Norman Zausmer.
He is survived by his wife, Isabel; children, Gary and Shelley Zausmer, Audrey and Alan Merin, and Laura and Mike Richardson; and grandchildren, Hillary, Bret, and Lindsay Zausmer, Alaina and Ariel Merin, and Melissa Richardson.

Alphonse F. Huffaker

Alphonse “Al” F. Huffaker, age 79, passed away on Monday, December 19, 2005 in San Antonio, Texas.
He was a native San Antonian born April 9, 1926 to Alphonse and Beulah Huffaker. He was retired from the Army Map Service Corps of Engineers as a cartographer after thirty years. He maintained a passion for flowers, plants and music throughout his life. His family will always remember his commitment and care to his wife, Margaret, throughout her illness in her later years.
He is survived by his children, Rev. Jack E. Schmid and wife Gwen of Rowlett, TX, Rev. Carl Huffaker and wife Janice of San Antonio, and Lisa Jacobs and husband Kenneth of San Antonio; grandchildren, Stephen, David and Matthew Schmid, Leigh Hicks, Amanda and Jayme Jacobs, Erin Huffaker, Denise Pritchard, and Robin and Tammy Houser of San Antonio; five great-grandchildren; sister, Doris Sprowl and her family; and brother-in-law, Carlton Hogue.

Mr. Patrick Thomas O’Dowd was born on August 9, 1925 in San Antonio, Texas. At the age of 80 he was called home to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on December 21, 2005.
He was a Navy Veteran of WWII, re-enlisted during The Korean Conflict, and was twice Honorably Discharged.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lotus R. O’Dowd and one sister, Cecile Tilger. Patrick is survived by his loving children, Sarah K. (Dr. Larry) Parker, Martha E. O’Dowd, and Patrick T., Jr. (Patricia A.); grandchildren, Sarah Day, Kyle Lee and Laura Jean Parker; Kevin Wayne, Brian Scott and Caitlin Rose Ormsby; Thomas Ryan, Kelly Marie and Christine Michelle O’Dowd; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Ruben Chayet

Ruben Chayet, born on February 3, 1909 in Alita, Lithuania, passed away at his home in San Antonio, TX on December 20, 2005.
Having left his country at the age of 18, he moved to Mexico City where he met and married his beautiful wife, Elisa, four years later.
Being a skilled tailor at a young age, he operated several clothing manufactories in Mexico City. He later moved to San Antonio where he was the proud owner of Chayet's Fashions on Houston Street and Central Park Mall.
He was preceded in death by his grandson, Gregory Cole and his two sons-in-law, Howard Cole and Morris Rosenstein.
He is survived by his loving wife of 73 years, Elisa Chayet, and daughters Raquel Ronay and husband, Carlos; Juliette Cole and Bea Rosenstein. He was adored by his 12 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. He will be dearly missed.

Patti McNeill Heckman
Born in Fairborn, OH on Feb. 4, 1946
Died Dec. 17, 2005 and resided in San Antonio, TX.

Patti McNeill Heckman, BSN, CEN, CFRN, CMTE, passed away peacefully in her home on December 17th. She was 59 years old and had just celebrated her 21st wedding anniversary on December 8th.
Born Patti McNeill Porter in Fairfield, Ohio, in 1946, Patti spent most of her life in San Antonio and Austin, Texas. After the birth of her daughter Allison in 1972, Patti graduated from UT Health Science Center with her Bachelors in Nursing. Patti served the San Antonio community as an RN for 28 years, the last 20 year caring for newborn and pediatric patients. Her commitment to nursing earned her several awards including the Nurse Imagemaker from Sigma Theta Tau, the Columbia/HCA Healthcare Humanitarian Award, and the Women’s & Children’s Hospital Annual Nursing Excellence Award.
Her compassionate and highly respected skills will have a lasting impact in the community for years to come. Her smile and caring attitude will be missed by many.
Patti is survived by her husband, Bob Heckman; daughter Allison Engel; her stepchildren Robert Heckman Jr., and Kim Staples, and their families; her sister Anne Holly and husband Wayne; her brother Mark Porter; her stepbrother Beryl “Chip” Cotton and wife Cheryl; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Patti’s cremains will be incorporated into an environmentally safe, artificial reef formation, to be placed in the Gulf of Mexico in the spring of 2006.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Patti’s name to a charity of your choice that is dedicated to helping children or the environment.
