Elinor Sherman

Elinor Sherman, of Abilene, passed away Thursday, August 14, 2008 at the age of 69. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 18 at the Church of the Heavenly Rest, Episcopal. The Rev. J. Scott Mayer and The Rev. Mary Glover will officiate. Inurnment will follow at the church's columbarium. Arrangements are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.

November 3, 1938, Elinor was born in Paris, Texas to John David King and Viola (Ellis) King. She graduated from North Texas State University with a degree in Elementary Education. December 20, 1959, Elinor married William Eugene "Gene" Sherman in Fort Worth, Texas. Abilene has been Elinor's home since 1999. She was a member of the Church of the Heavenly Rest, Episcopal.

Elinor was a member of the Abilene Woman's Club and Los Aficionados. She was an avid bridge player, having played for many years. Her favorite pastimes were sewing and needlework, as well as working crossword puzzles. Elinor loved to cook and even put together a family cookbook with many longtime family recipes and stories. She also enjoyed playing couples golf, travelling, and working on the computer. She especially loved and enjoyed doing things with and for her grandchildren.

Elinor's parents, John and Viola King, preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, Gene Sherman, of Abilene; two sons, David Sherman and his wife Debbie, of Abilene, Casey Sherman and his wife Kathy, also of Abilene; one daughter, Tiffany Sherman, of Lewisville; six grandchildren Meredith and Monica Sherman, Jason and Kayla Upton, Kayla and Kora Sherman.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the donor's favorite charity.

Vickie Lynn Davis, 59

Died: Wednesday, December 17, 2008, in Abilene, Texas

Vickie Lynn Davis, 59, of Abilene, passed away Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at a local hospital. Viewing will be today, Friday, December 19, 2008, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Graveside services will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the Garden of Memories Cemetery, 5701 Highway 277 South, in the Garden of Prayer.

August 15, 1949, Vickie was born in Gorman, Texas to Robert Thomas Davis and Billie Jean (McGuire) Davis. She graduated from Abilene High School and received a Bachelor's Degree from Hardin-Simmons University, where she a member of the Beta Social Club and Capers (HSU), which is part of the ROTC. She was a school teacher at Bowie Elementary for 27 years. Vickie also worked in the business office and the post office at Hardin-Simmons.

Vickie was a member of University Baptist Church. She played the piano and organ at the Oak Street Baptist Church in Colorado City and at the Hannah Baptist Church in Anson. While attending Abilene High School, Vickie played the flute in the band.

She was preceded in death by her father, Robert Thomas Davis, in October of 2004. She is survived by her mother, Billie Davis, of Abilene.

Harry Eugene "H.E. (Gene)" Campbell, 95

Died: Thursday, October 30, 2008, in Abilene, Texas

Harry Eugene Campbell, of Abilene, formerly of Venus, Texas, passed away Thursday, October 30, 2008 at the age of 95. Graveside services will be today, Saturday, November 1, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Laurel Land Cemetery in Dallas, Texas, under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. David Tarbet will officiate.

H.E. (Gene) was born November 15, 1912 in Dayton, Ohio to Homer and Emily Ann Campbell. He left high school in the 10th grade to work at Texas & Pacific Railroad. During that time he attended night school in Dallas, Texas and studied accounting courses by mail. May 5, 1934, Gene married Virginia Lee Carlisle Campbell in Durante, Oklahoma. She preceded him in death on October 16, 2006. Gene worked as the Chief Traveling Auditor for Missouri Pacific Railroad (formerly Texas & Pacific Railroad) and Campbell Bookkeeping.

While living in Venus, Texas, Gene served as the Mayor and began the Meals on Wheels organization. He was the President of the Dad's Club. Gene was a member of the Johnson County Committee on Aging and was a defensive driving teacher for the AARP. He was also a lifetime member, for over 50 years, of the Masonic Lodge. He was also a former Elder of the Church of Christ in Venus, as well as a bible class teacher.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Emily Ann and Homer Campbell; his wife of 72 years, Virginia Carlisle Campbell; one sister, Grace Eleanor Campbell; one sister-in-law, Mary Carlisle Tippens; and three brothers-in-law, J.B. Carlisle, Jr., Robert Carlisle and Joe Carlisle.

Gene is survived by one daughter, Jo Anne Jamison and her husband Fred, of Abilene; three grandchildren, Jerri Jamison Adams and her husband Butch, of Blue Ridge, Virginia, Jenni Jamison Priest and her husband Ed, of Abilene, and Fred Jamison III, also of Abilene; four great-grandchildren, Emily and William Adams, of Blue Ridge, Virginia, and Parker and Creede Jamison, of Abilene. He is also survived by four brothers-in-law, Charles Carlisle, of Dallas, Texas, David Carlisle and wife Dorothy, of California, Randolph Carlisle and wife Bess, of Midlothian, Texas, and Walter Carlisle and wife Lula, also of Midlothian, Texas.

Lester Pete Massey, 98

Died: Sunday, September 07, 2008, in Abilene, Texas

Lester Massey, of Abilene, died Sunday, September 7, 2008 at the age of 98. Graveside services will be today, Tuesday September 9, at 9:00 a.m. in Elmwood Memorial Park, directed by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Rev. Wayne Oglesby will officiate.

May 14, 1910, Lester was born the daughter of the late Willie and Ola (Hart) Pritchett in Corsicana, Texas. She married William Gerald "Bill" Massey in Abilene on July 31, 1962. He preceded her in death on May 23, 1982. Abilene has been Lester's home since 1927. For over 20 years, she was the bookkeeper for Howard Drug Store. Lester was a member of the Eastern Star and Calvary Baptist Church.

Lester was preceded in death by her parents, Willie and Ola Prichett, her husband, Bill Massey, two sisters and three brothers. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Hospice of the Big Country and Home Instead for their help and compassionate care.

Pauline Chapple "Polly" Nelson, 96

Died: Wednesday, December 17, 2008, in Abilene, Texas

Pauline "Polly" Chapple Nelson, of Abilene, passed away Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at the age of 96. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 20, 2008 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Graveside services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 21, 2008 at Seaside Memorial Park in Corpus Christi, Texas. Visitation will be Friday evening from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home and people are welcome to come prior to the service for viewing.

May 6, 1912, Polly was born in Christoval, Texas to the late Frank Chapple and D Lula (Shepperd) Chapple. She graduated from Abilene Christian College with a Bachelor's Degree in 1933 and received her Master's Degree from Texas A & I in Kingsville, which is now Texas A & M Kingsville. On October 16, 1940, Polly married J. Don Nelson, Jr. He preceded her in death on August 30, 1978.

She lived in Corpus Christi, Texas and in Kingsville, Texas from 1959 to 2001, when she moved to Abilene. Polly previously taught Mathematics at Abilene Christian College, Kilgore Junior College, Winnsboro High School, Tyler High School, Kingsville Middle School and Texas A & I. After her retirement from Texas A & I, she volunteered tutoring students from middle school age to graduate students.

Polly was an active member of the Senior Women's Golf Association until she was 86 years old. She was also a member of the Lighthouse for the Blind Corpus Christi Board, Friends of the ACU Library Board and Highland Church of Christ in Abilene. Polly was honored in 2002 as a "Friend of The ACU Library".

Preceding her in death were her parents and her husband. She is survived by one son, Don C. Nelson and his wife Sandra, of Kingwood, Texas; one daughter, Karen Hendrick, of Abilene, Texas; one brother, Frank Chapple, of Slaton, Texas; one sister, Sarah Jarrett and her husband William, of Hobbs, New Mexico; four grandchildren, Joel Hendrick and Jay Hendrick, both of Abilene, Reagan Nelson and his wife Stephanie, of Houston, and Victoria Nelson, also of Houston; two great-grandchildren, Baylee and Brice Nelson, of Houston; as well as several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Nelson Family Library Endowment Fund, ACU Box 29132, Abilene, Texas 79699.

Henry E. Pittman, 78

Died: Thursday, November 27, 2008, in Abilene, Texas

Henry E. Pittman, 78, went peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior on November 27, 2008. He was the husband of Frances, with whom he shared 56 wonderful years.

Born on April 9, 1930 in Wise County, Texas, he was the son of the (late) Captola and (late) Mace Green of Oktaha, Oklahoma and the (late) Earl and Florene Pittman of Bowie, Texas. He was raised in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Henry attended Ranger Junior College for two years. After moving to Abilene, he married his bride Frances, on August 4, 1952.

Henry is a member of Belmont Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. He also proudly served from 1952 to 1960 in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Germany. Later he retired from both Central Texas Iron Works, where he had worked for 31 years, and ABCO Boilers of Abilene, where he had worked for 11 years. Henry was also a part of South Park Senior Citizens Program.

In addition to his loving wife, he is survived by one daughter, Cyndi Reed, and her husband, Garry, of Abilene; three grandchildren, Amber Reed of Houston, Kaycee Neumann and Dillion Reed, both of Abilene; and one great-grandchild, Allison Grace, of Houston. He is also survived by two brothers, Duane Pittman, of Oktaha, Oklahoma, and Thelbert Pittman, of Frankston, Texas; four sisters, Ethel Smith, of Oktaha, Oklahoma, Lola Bebee, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Kedith Shaw and Mathelda Fugitt, of Bowie, Texas; sister-in-law, Nona Sievert; aunt, Myrtle Morren; special cousins, Jim and Carol Aldis; as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, December 1, 2008 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road. Robert Graven and Randy Packwood will officiate. Burial will follow at Elmwood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.

Honorary pallbearers are: Deacons of Belmont Baptist Church.

Pallbearers are: Jim Aldis, Alan Crowe, Jody Crowe, Wes Crowe, Matt Graven, and Robert Moscarelli.

Memorials may be made in Henry Pittman's honor to the Belmont Baptist Church Youth and Children's Program, 2117 Palm Street, Abilene, Texas 79602.

Stefanie Stephenson, 57

Died: Monday, December 01, 2008, in Abilene, Texas

Stefanie Ard Stephenson passed away in the early morning hours of December 1, 2008 after a courageous battle with cancer. Family visitation will be at The Hamil Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene, Texas on Wednesday December 3, 2008 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. A memorial service will be at 10:00 am on Thursday, December 4, 2008, at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 525 Beech Street. Greg Kennedy, Senior Pastor will officiate the service. Interment will be at Elmwood Memorial Park, 5750 Hwy 277 South, following the service.

Stefanie was born August 14, 1951 in Abilene, Texas to Floyd and Aradine Ard. Stefanie graduated from Cooper High School in Abilene, and attended the University of Texas at Austin. While at UT she joined the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. After college, Stefanie lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico, moving back to Abilene in 1983 to take care of her ailing mother and help manage the family business. Shortly after returning to Abilene, Stefanie met her future husband, Bryan Stephenson. They were married on May 23, 1987. Bryan and Stefanie were blessed with two children, Bryan Austin Stephenson, born in 1990 and Aradine Katherine Elizabeth Stephenson, born in 1994.

Bryan Austin and Aradine were the light of Stefanie's life and she found her greatest joy in supporting them in their many activities and accomplishments. It gave Stefanie such happiness to cheer from the sidelines as Bryan ran track and Aradine competed on the tennis court. Her deep abiding love for her children was reflected in her words and actions. Stefanie loved walks in the country, star gazing, art and beautiful music, especially when performed by her children. She was also known to be an excellent gourmet cook.

In addition to being a devoted mother, Stefanie enjoyed managing investments and was a talented business woman. She was involved in the Abilene community and in the activities of her children including serving on the Board of Trustees of St. John's Episcopal School and fund raising and volunteering for the Grace Cultural Museum, since its inception, and serving as a member of Los Aficionados. Stefanie was an enthusiastic patron and volunteer for the Abilene Philharmonic. After her mother's diagnosis, Stefanie worked as an Alzheimer's disease advocate and educator to increase public awareness about the disease.

Stefanie is survived by her husband, Bryan, her son, Bryan Austin, and her daughter, Aradine, as well as two brothers, Ivan Ard of Midland, Texas; Julian Ard of Fort Worth, Texas; two sisters, Marsha Ard of Dallas and Elisa Ard of Santa Fe, New Mexico, in addition to two nieces Coral and Liza.

Memorials may be made in honor of Stefanie Stephenson to the Alzheimer's Association, 301 South Pioneer, Suite 105, Abilene, Texas 79605

William Franklin "Bill" Agnew, 74

Died: Friday, November 21, 2008, in Abilene, Texas

William F. Agnew passed away at Hendrick Memorial Center on November 21, 2008, after a brief and unexpected illness. He was better known to his family, friends, and all who loved him, as "Bill." Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at the University Church of Christ. Dr. Bill Young, assisted by Dr. Don Wilson, will officiate. Dr. Rex Anderson, Jr. will read scripture. Burial will follow in Elmwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. on Monday at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.

Bill was born on July 30, 1934 in Brownwood, Texas to the late Ray and Alta Agnew. He graduated from High School in Rising Star. Bill was a 1955 graduate of Abilene Christian University and a lifelong member of the Church of Christ. He married Nancy Oldham on December 30, 1952 at the University Church of Christ.

He was the son and grandson of a grocer, and owned and operated Agnew Superette, located initially in a shopping area on Ambler, and later on his property at the intersection of Ambler and Madison. The Superette was well known to at least two generations of friends and customers, all of whom Bill loved and respected. Many college students, whom Bill enjoyed, attribute his employment of them in school as being a significant factor in obtaining their education.

Bill was a sincere, caring, generous man, who never met a stranger. He was described as one who lived his life transparently, and was the same to both the privileged and downcast. In particular, one individual described him as being the person who taught him how to interact with those in all sets of circumstances, and that few realized how he helped so many others either financially, or with personal problems.

Preceding him in death were his father and mother Ray Agnew and Alta (Burrus) Agnew; his son, David Michael Agnew on February 4, 2007; Nancy's mother, Laura Irene Oldham, one brother, Burt Agnew, and a sister-in-law, Helen Rhodes. Bill is survived by his wife, Nancy Agnew, of Abilene; one daughter, Carol Agnew Holliman and her husband Gary, of Terrell, Texas; one grandson, Michael William Agnew, of Abilene and San Antonio; one brother, Pat Agnew and his wife Carolyn, of Abilene; a sister, Edith Bibb and her husband Kenneth, of Rising Star; two sisters-in-law, Louise Swim, of Dallas and Rosita Lazar, of Boynton Beach, Florida; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Pallbearers will be Dr. Jimmy McNeil, Tommy Morris, Johnny Jones, Wayne Bramhall, Garnie Hatch, Scott Bishop and Billy Don Womack. Honorary pallbearers will be lifetime friend, Don Etter, Larry Wishard, of Aurora, Colorado, Don Baber, James Cobb, Danny Fleming, Bob Bailey, Gary Sitton, and Jeff Huckabee.

Memorials may be made in honor of Bill Agnew to the donor's favorite charity.

Bill, in a quiet way, touched the lives of countless members of the community.
