Died: Thursday, July 21, 2011, in Abilene, Texas
Wayne K. Moore, 82 died Thursday, July 21, 2011. Visitation will be held at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road on Sunday, July 24, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 25, in Elmwood Memorial Park with Reverend Art Goolsbee officiating.

Mr. Moore was born July 17, 1929 in Roby, Texas to the late Charles H. and Emma Moore. He graduated from Roby High School in 1948 and then enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served at Fort Lewis, Washington with Corp of Engineers and 4th Armored Division at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas. He married his high school sweetheart, Reba Young, May 21, 1949.

Mr. Moore began his career in the oil field supply industry in 1951 with HOMCO and then worked 17 years with Fort Worth Pipe & Supply. In 1972, with the encouragement of the late R. B. (Bob) Cockrell and D.L. McDonald, he began Wayne Moore Pipe & Supply Company which he owned and operated until the time of his death. For his quality of work, he was awarded the Petroleum Industry Council's "Industry of the Quarter" award in 1985.

Throughout his life, Mr. Moore actively supported the West Texas Rehabilitation Center by participating in the Cattlemen's Round-Up and Telethon and served on the Joint Venture committee. Mr. Moore was also supportive of the American Junior Golf Association. In 1981 he founded a junior golf tournament that is still played in Abilene today. He served on the organization's Board of Directors from 1984 until 1986 and in 1994 was honored with the "Digger Smith Award", an honor given to individuals whose service and dedication to junior golf go above and beyond the call of duty.

Wayne Moore is survived his wife, Reba Y. Moore; his daughter, Retha Moore Wittie and her husband Ric; his granddaughter, Allison Wittie Bredemeyer and her husband Kevin and one great-grandson, Ben. Also one sister, Vela Smith; three brothers: Kenneth Moore, Kyle Moore and his wife Rose, Neil Moore and his wife Darlene; four sisters-in-law: Jessie Moore, Daphene Moore, Virginia Gibson and LaNeta Young; one brother-in-law Hubert Young and his wife Nancy and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his son, Todd Moore; both parents; three sisters: Jo Fields, Ruth Weaver and Emma Sue Moore; three brothers: Hue Dorsey, J.P. and Raymond S. Moore; six sisters-in-law: Evalene Moore, Carlene Moore, Thana Terry, Peggy Rollans, Georgie Fay Young, and Linda Griffin Moore; two brothers-in-law, Alton Rollans and A.L. Gibson; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, George H. Young and Lizzie.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Wisteria Place and Hendrick Hospice for their support and kind care.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial gift may be sent to the West Texas Rehabilitation Center, the Todd Moore Memorial Scholarship at the Community Foundation of Abilene, 500 Chestnut, Ste. 1634, Abilene, Texas 79602, or St. John's Episcopal School Annual Fund, 1600 Sherman Drive, Abilene, Texas 79605.

Ernestine Crawford Greer, 88
Died: Wednesday, May 25, 2011, in Abilene, Texas
Ernestine Crawford Greer's faith became sight on Wednesday, May 25, 2011, as she was taken to her eternal home by the Lord she loved. She was a beautiful expression of a "gentle and quiet spirit" (1 Peter 3:4) and will be deeply missed by her family and those who loved her. Her life will be celebrated with a visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, May 27, at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, and a memorial service at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 28, at Southwest Park Baptist Church in Abilene with Pastor Mike Woodard officiating.

Ernestine was born on July 3, 1922, to Ernest and Dorcas (Barton) Crawford on the family ranch in the Dudley community. She attended school in Dudley and graduated from high school in Denton Valley. She came to Abilene after graduation to attend Draughns Business College and afterward worked at Camp Barkley and Radford Wholesale Grocers. In 1945 she met and married the love of her life, Leonard Greer, after only one date and knowing one another for only 3 weeks. They enjoyed 62 years of marriage and were longtime members of Southwest Park Baptist Church. The most important things on this earth to Ernestine were her family and her home. She and Leonard raised two sons, James and Dennis, and spent many years enjoying their 10 acres south of Abilene where they planted huge gardens and raised a few calves.

Ernestine was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard, her parents, her brother, Dalt Crawford, and her grandson, Jared Greer. She is survived by her two sons, James and his wife Patti, and Dennis and his wife Brenda all of Abilene; and her five grandchildren, Josh Greer and his wife Leigh Ann of Abilene, Jonathan Greer of Abilene, Jami Greer Cardwell and her husband Chris of San Antonio, Lane Greer and his wife Hannah of Westminster, Colorado, and Wes Greer and his wife Suz of Littleton, Colorado.

James Derrell Owens, 61
Died: Wednesday, May 4, 2011, in Abilene, Texas
James Derrell Owens, 61, died Wednesday, May 4, 2011, at an Abilene medical center

Born in Cisco, Texas on May 26, 1949, James was the son of Dorothy Nell (Owen) and Charles Earl Owens. He attended public schools in Abilene. He was a proud US Army veteran of Vietnam and loved his country. After he completed his military service, he returned to Abilene in 1971.

A diesel mechanic, he worked first for City of Abilene for five years, Scurlock Permian Corporation for 30 years, Stephens-Martin, and lastly Baker Bridge.

He married Evelyn Ruth Stewart on October 21, 1981 in Jones County. James was a good, hardworking man who loved his family and his friends. His word was his bond. He was a member of Broadview Baptist Church and the Faith of Abraham Sunday School Class at the church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a stepson David, and a stepdaughter Donna.

James is survived by his wife, Evelyn Stewart Owens of Merkel; stepson, Nicky Rucker and wife Courtney of Arlington, TX; stepdaughters, Rebecca Baldwin of Abilene and Cheryl Salazar and husband Joe of Eastland; two adopted daughters, Leah Jacoby and Kara Keele; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Survivors also include a brother, Curtis Owens and wife Sherri of Abilene; five sisters, Linda Huff and husband Don of Abilene, Lyda Cowan and Lavonda Jackson both of Lewisville, Lesa Flannigan of Bridgeport, and Kim Corbit and husband Tom of Duncan, South Carolina; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. today, Friday, May 6, at Broadview Baptist Church with Rev. David Cason and Rev. Burtis Williams officiating. Burial will follow at 1:00 p.m. in Texas State Veterans Cemetery at Abilene, 7457 W. Lake Road, directed by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.

The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Hendrick Medical Center, especially Dr. Trauth.

Alvis Ray Cox, 87
Died: Saturday, December 06, 2008, in Abilene, Texas
Alvis Ray Cox, 87, of Abilene passed away Saturday, December 6, 2008. Private graveside services will be held for family. A memorial service will be held today, Monday, December 8, 2008 at 1:00 p.m at St. Paul United Methodist Church. Services are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.

November 15, 1921, Ray was born in Garden City, Texas to the late John Henry Cox and Eva (Calverly) Cox. He graduated from high school in Garden City and attended Hardin-Simmons University, graduating from the University of Texas with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Ray served in the United States Navy during World War II. October 18, 1947, Ray married Helen Childers in Cisco, Texas. In 1954, they moved to Abilene from Oklahoma. He worked for West Texas Utilities for 24 years and was active in the Lions Club, Bridge Clubs and the Eagle Scouts. Ray was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Kenneth Cox in 1968, and one brother, Belton Cox who died while serving his country during World War II. Ray is survived by his wife, Helen Cox, of Abilene; two daughters, Sharon Summers and her husband Don, and Suzette Buchanan and her husband Kenny, all of Abilene; one brother, Donald Cox and his wife Carolyn, of Lamesa; two sisters, Mary Jo Cope and her husband Alton, of Garden City, and Frances Mills and her husband John, of Midland; and one grandson, Seth Summers and his wife Elaine, of Abilene.

Memorials may be made in honor of Alvis Ray Cox to St. Paul United Methodist Church, 525 Beech Street, Abilene, Texas; Hendrick Hospice Care, 1682 Hickory Street, Abilene, Texas 79601; or to the Boy Scouts of America, 1208 North 5th Street, Abilene, Texas 79601.

Ivy Jane Mason, 74
Died: Friday, January 20, 2012, in Abilene, Texas
Ivy Jane Mason, affectionately known as "Miss Ivy", 74, died Friday, January 20, 2012, at an Abilene medical center.

Born in Eastland County, Texas on August 8, 1937, Ivy was the daughter of Gladys Ivy (Higginbotham) and James Timothy Matthews. She was a 1955 graduate of Moran High School. She worked at Abilene National Bank in Abilene prior to moving to San Antonio, where she worked for Security National Bank for nine years before returning to Abilene in 1985.

Ivy married Leroy Mason on May 11, 1976 in Dallas.

She was very active in the Fellowship Ministry at Grace Baptist Church and a former member of the Auxiliary Gideons International. She and Leroy were very involved in Bowling, and she was a member of the following - The Lady Leaguers - The Tuesday Night Mixed League - The Friday Afternoon Senior Citizens Fun Bunch.

She was preceded in death by her father, Jim Matthews in 1994; mother, Gladys Matthews in 2002; and daughter, Karen Riddle in 2006.

Ivy is survived by her beloved husband, Leroy Mason of Abilene; son, Van Holdbrook and wife Kathie of Clyde; and daughters, Pam Patino and husband Pab of Mineral Wells, and Tammy Gravitt of Arlington, Texas; eight grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren. Survivors also include one brother, Wesley Matthews and wife Betty of Hearne, Texas, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Monday, January 23, at Grace Baptist Church, 1036 Todd Trail in Potosi, with Rev. Chuck Reynolds officiating. A graveside service will follow at 2:00 p.m. in Moran Cemetery directed by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be D.J. Riddle, Cameron Gravitt, Jason Radford, Jesse Valentine, Justin Cathey, Tyler Radford and Tanner Radford.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in honor of "Miss Ivy" may be made to the Development Fund at Grace Baptist Church, 1036 Todd Trail, Abilene, TX 79602; American Diabetes Association, 3001 North Big Spring St., Suite 104, Midland, TX 79705; or American Lung Association of Texas, 5926 Balcones Dr., Suite 100, Austin Texas 78731.

John Roy Day Jr., 90
Died: Tuesday, December 27, 2011, in Abilene, Texas
John Roy Day, Jr. passed away peacefully into the loving arms of God on December 27th, 2011 at the age of 90. John was born on November 29, 1921 in Burnet, Texas to John Roy Day, Sr. and Adah Latham.

He graduated from Coleman High School and received a Master of Education from McMurry University before entering the service during World War II. He served in the South Pacific in the Army Air Corps 13th Air Force.

After his service, he returned to civilian life in Electra, Texas where he met and married a young school teacher, Sue Frances Carr in July 1947. He taught school for 33 years including teaching art when Madison Junior High opened. In addition to teaching, he had a sideline of ranching. Interests included sailing, motor boating and taking trips on motorcycles. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Abilene.

John is survived by his wife, Sue Frances, son John R. Day III and his wife Peggy of Abilene, daughter Melissa Pulliam and her husband Mark of Plano along with grandchildren John R. Day IV of Abilene, Christina Maher of Alamogordo, NM, Meaghan Pulliam and Matthew Pulliam of Plano. He was preceded in death by his parents and two infant children.

Services will be at the Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road at 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 30. Rev. Eddie Rivera and Rev. Robert Kelley of St. Paul United Methodist will be officiating. Visitation will be from 4:30-6:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral.

Memorials may be made in his honor to McMurry Fund to assist with student scholarships.

Merrell Davis, 69
Died: Saturday, October 22, 2011, in Lampasas, Texas
Merrell Davis, age 69, lost his hard-fought battle with cancer on Saturday, October 22, 2011 surrounded by those he loved. Services will be at 11 AM on Tuesday, October 25 at Hamil Family Funeral Home Chapel, 6449 Buffalo Gap Rd. in Abilene, TX. Officiating the service will be Rick Cunningham of Big Spring and life-long friend, Major General Tom Lynn (USAF, retired) of Macon Georgia. A private burial will follow at the McDonald Ranch Cemetery in Sterling City.

Merrell was born on January 27, 1942 to Elizabeth (Shankle) and Adolphus (Bud) Davis in Fulton, Kentucky. He grew up in this close-knit community where he forged lasting friendships that he cherished until the end of his life. He was a graduate of Fulton High School in 1960 and received a degree from Murray State University in 1965. Merrell was stationed in Korea from 1965-1969 in the service of the United States Army. Merrell worked in the retail fashion industry for many years and later at the Abilene Reporter News until his retirement in 2006. Merrell and Celia moved to Lampasas in 2008 to join their daughter, Jena and her family.

Merrell and Celia were married on December 7, 1979 in Dallas. Merrell proudly joined the McDonald family of Sterling City and often spoke of the profound influence his mother-in-law and father-in-law had on his life. All of his life he enjoyed the McDonald family ranch and its proud heritage. Hunting and ranch cooking became a passion for Merrell and at the ranch instilled the love of both in his boys and many of their friends.

To know Merrell was to know his great love for his sons and their accomplishments. He loved his step-daughter as his own and worshipped his grandchildren. He was happiest when surrounded by his family.

As an avid supporter of all the Armed Services he worked tirelessly for many years cooking for the World's Largest Barbeque honoring Dyess Air Force Base and the valuable service Dyess personnel so unselfishly provide.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Elizabeth and Bud Davis of Fulton, KY and his wife's parents, Chesley and Cecile McDonald of Sterling City, Texas.

Surviving Merrell is his wife of 32 years, Celia McDonald Davis and their children Jena Allen Price and husband Bill of Lampasas, William Merrell Davis and wife Kellie Wiggins Davis of College Station, Wesley Benjamin Davis of Houston, and grandchildren Bryson and Celie Price of Lampasas.

Also surviving Merrell is his sister Dana Davis Hughes and husband John of Rogers, AR and their children Johnny and wife Angie (Avery and JC), Liz and husband Brad Abercrombie of Rogers, AR and stepsister, Judy Jones and husband Johnny of Fulton, KY.

Pallbearers include Phil Bandy of Ponca City, OK, Thad Carthel of Tulsa, OK, Paul Fulham of Abilene, John Hughes and Johnny Hughes of Rogers, AR, Johnny Jones of Fulton, KY, Jerry McAlister of Abilene, Don McDonald of Granbury, TX, and Ladd Stokes of Fulton, KY.
