Mark Phillip Orth, DDS, 56
Died: Tuesday, May 31, 2011, in Abilene, Texas
Dr. Mark Phillip Orth was born in Champaign, Illinois on March 13, 1955. He died in Abilene, Texas on May 31, 2011. He had practiced oral and maxillofacial surgery in Abilene for 15 years.

Dr. Orth received his dental degree from the University Of Texas Health Science Center in Houston.

He served for 15 years in the United States Navy.

He was a member of the Texas Dental Association and the American Dental Association. He was a member of the Texas Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the Southwest Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He was a fellow of the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and a diplomat of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Dr. Orth served on the attending staff of Abilene Regional Medical Center, Hendrick Medical Center, and Abilene State Supported Living Center.

His was preceded in death by his mother and sister. He is survived by his father John Stanbaugh Orth, M.D. and a brother Paul Michael Orth, both of the home.

A memorial service for Dr. Orth will be officiated by Dr. Allen Neece in the chapel at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 30, 2011.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to the donor's favorite charity, American Heart Association, 149 N. Willis, Suite 10, Abilene, TX 79603; Alzheimer's Association, North Central Texas Chapter, P.O. Box 867, Ft. Worth, TX 76101; or the Cerebral Palsy Foundation, 1660 L. St. N.W., Suite 700, Washington, D.C. 20036.

Dr. Henry Bedford Furr
Died: Tuesday, May 24, 2011, in Abilene, Texas
Dr. Henry Bedford Furr was born to Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Furr, Sr., in Breckenridge, Texas, and passed from this life on Tuesday, May 24, 2011 in Abilene, Texas. His parents and one sister, Jewel Furr, preceded him in death. He and Oneta Roberts were married in Wichita Falls, Texas at First United Methodist Church. Dr. Furr is survived by his wife, Dr. Oneta Furr of Abilene.

Dr. Furr pursued careers in both education and business. He was valedictorian of his Breckenridge High School class and also, of his graduating class at John Tarleton Agricultural College, where he rose to the rank of Cadet Colonel, the highest ranking cadet officer. He was graduated with high honor from Southern Methodist University. He and his wife earned doctoral degrees at the same time from North Texas State University -- the only married couple to accomplish that achievement to that time at that institution. He was charter president of the Texhoma Field Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa. After serving a number of years as a classroom teacher, he became Assistant Superintendent of Schools in Wichita Falls, both for secondary education and for business administration.

In early adult years he worked as announcer and account executive for Radio Station KWFT in Wichita Falls, and went on to become sales and promotion manager for United Electric Company of that city.

He served as keynote speaker for numerous conventions, both regional and national.

Dr. Furr was a lifelong member of the Methodist Church, having held several responsible positions, including that of Certified Lay Speaker.

He was a member of Kiwanis International over fifty years, holding many positions at the local club level. He was a past president of the Abilene Kiwanis Club and had served as president of another Kiwanis club. He organized three new clubs and served as Lieutenant Governor. He was a recipient of the Kiwanis Legion of Honor.

Dr. Furr will be remembered as an outstanding scholar with a quiet but relentless passion for helping others.

There will be a private family graveside service in Elmwood Memorial Park on Thursday morning, May 26, with a memorial service to follow at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 525 Beech Street, at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. Clifford S. Stewart and Dr. Eduardo Rivera officiating, directed by The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.

Honorary pallbearers will be Tryce Bagley, Heath Bagley, Tim Willis, Joe Blake, Jackie Lankford, Bob Cook and Ty Baynes.

Thank you to all of the doctors, nurses and health professionals for your excellent care of Dr. Bedford Furr.

Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's favorite charity.

Carolyn Harris Aston, 82
Died: Saturday, May 21, 2011, in Abilene, Texas
Carolyn Harris Aston passed from this life Saturday May 21, 2011 at the Windcrest Care Facility after a long struggle with Alzheimers. She was 82. Carolyn was born April 11, 1929 to Lester Guy Harris and Annice J. Harris in Abilene. She attended Abilene High, and Abilene Christian College.

Funeral service will be Tuesday, 2:00 pm at the Hamil Family Funeral Home Chapel with interment at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be on Monday from 5:00-7:00 pm at Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.

Carolyn planned for this day for 70 years. She wrote in her journal, "I was baptized for the remission of my sins on September 4, 1941. I had planned to be baptized on that night and had taken a white dress to be baptized in to the church that afternoon." Her family and friends can testify that Carolyn spent the rest of her life living for Jesus.

She met Kenneth Ray Aston of Corsicana while attending ACC. They married on November 23, 1949, at the 14th and Vine Street Church of Christ. Kenneth and Carolyn raised their family of four children in Abilene. She dedicated her life to being a full time mom. In later years she worked a brief time for the Abilene Reporter News. Carolyn later sold antiques and ran an antique store in Waxahachie TX. during the 1980s. She also enjoyed running a successful bed and breakfast in Jefferson, Texas for many years.

Carolyn is survived by her husband Kenneth of Wills Point Texas, son Mike Aston and wife Susan of Abilene, son Mark Aston and wife Jeannie of Flagstaff AZ, son Matt Aston of Los Angeles CA, daughter Martha Simon and husband Jim of Truckee CA. Grandsons: Jordan Aston of Lubbock TX, Jared Aston of Los Angeles CA, Andrew Walker of Truckee CA, and Alexander Aston of Flagstaff AZ.

Ruth Ann Cleveland, 58
Died: Wednesday, October 29, 2008, in Abilene, Texas
Ruth Ann Cleveland, of Abilene, passed away Wednesday, October 29, 2008 at the age of 58. Graveside services will be held on Monday, November 3, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 7:30 pm on Friday, October 31, 2008 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road.

Ruth Ann was born in Centralia, Illinois November18, 1949 to Robert and Verna Hill. She graduated from Centralia High School in 1967. Ruth Ann married Larry James Cleveland on November 30, 1968 in Centralia, Illinois. She was a member of the United Church of God.

Ruth Ann's parents, Robert and Verna Hill, her sister, Dorothy Horst, and one brother, John Hill, preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, Larry Cleveland, of Abilene; one daughter, Jean Stewart and her husband, Scott of Granbury, Texas; four brothers, Roger Hill and his wife Barbara, of Centralia, Illinois, Joe Hill and his wife Jo Ann, or Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, Gene Hill of Marietta, Georgia, and Gary Hill and his wife Karen, also of Marietta, Georgia; three grandchildren, Ian, Julia and Hayden, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Ruth Ann's family appreciates the many cards, calls and acts of kindness during her battle with metastatic breast cancer.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hendrick Hospice Care, 1682 Hickory Street, Abilene, Texas; or to Meals On Wheels Plus, 717 North 10th Street, Abilene, Texas 79601.

Kay Arther, 66
Died: Monday, February 27, 2012, in Abilene, Texas
Kay Arther, 66, passed away on Monday, February 27, 2012 in Abilene, Texas.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday, February 29th at The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 1st at Church of the Heavenly Rest, Episcopal with The Rev. N. Luke Back, Rector, officiating.

Entombment will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, March 2nd in the Mausoleum at Elmwood Memorial Park.

Kay was born in Mangum, Oklahoma to C.E. (Boats) and Avious Orene Robertson on December 19th, 1945. She graduated from Quanah High School in Quanah, Texas in 1964. Kay married Jerry J. Arther on October 9th, 1980. She really enjoyed her work as an Executive Secretary for Hendrick Home for Children for 10 years. Kay was an active member of the Episcopal Church of the Heavenly Rest. She became a Stephens Minister in 1999 and really enjoyed helping others in grief.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents and her daughter, Shari Lyn Miller.

She is survived by her husband, Jerry J. Arther of Abilene; her son, Brien Lawler and his wife Shana, and their 3 sons, Garrison, Griffin, and Grayson, of San Antonio; and her son-in-law, Tony Miller and his children, Jessica and Addison, of Keller.

Kay also leaves behind her husband's children and their families, whom she loved dearly. They and their spouses are Jeff Arther and Daphne, Jenifer Earley and Jon, and Sue Phillips and Dave, as well as their children, Andrew and his wife Holly, Sydney, Dillon, Jamey, Lauren, Jordan and Kylie.

Pallbearers will be Mack Skinner, Mike Arther, Stan Treanor, Bill Norwood, Steve Suttle, and David Miller.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be given to Hendrick Home for Children, P O Box 5195, Abilene, TX 79608, and Church of the Heavenly Rest, Episcopal, 602 Meander Street, Abilene, TX 79602.

Lester Ira Meador, 80
Died: Sunday, January 1, 2012, in Abilene, Texas
Lester Ira Meador, 80, died Sunday, January 1, 2012 in Abilene, Texas.

Born in Novice, Texas on November 26, 1931, Lester was the son of Vada Lee (Jennings) and Willie A. Meador. He served in the U.S. Army from 1950-52, and married Dorthy Puckett on March 14, 1953, at the First Baptist Church in Coleman, Texas.

He was a past member and charter member of the Eastland Jaycees, and in 1958 was one of eight charter members and a past member of the Kiwanis Club. Lester moved from Eastland, Texas to Abilene on January 1, 1960.

Lester worked as a meat cutter for M-System Foods from 1960-75, Super Duper from 1975-83, and Dyess AFB Commissary until his retirement in 1994.

He was a member of the Church of Christ. Lester and his wife made a home for exchange student, Carlos Martez. He lived with them and graduated in 1974 from Cooper High School in Abilene.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Lester is survived by his wife, Dorthy Meador of Abilene; two sons, Lester Dale Meador and wife Karla of Abilene and Randy Darrell Meador and wife Cindy of Buffalo Gap; daughter, Brenda Elleene Lanham of Moran; two adopted sons, Steven David White of Abilene and Mikeal Keith White of Rawlins, Wyoming; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Survivors also include two brothers, William Doyle Meador of Crowley, Texas and E. W. Meador of Cross Cut, Texas; three sisters, Darcia Lee Holtz, Dellene Driskell and Melba Baugh all of Coleman; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 5, 2012 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home Chapel, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road in Abilene. Graveside services will follow at 3:00 p.m. in the Gouldbusk Cemetery at Gouldbusk, Texas in Coleman County.
