She passed away on January 10, 2003 in College Station, TX and departed to join her mother, father and beloved husband, Arthur M. “Prof” Smith to reside forever with their Lord. Three sons and daughters-in-law survive her: Robert & Pat Smith of Houston, TX, Richard and Norma Smith of Bryan, TX and Bradley and Ellen Smith of Sugar Land, TX; nine grandchildren: Karen Watkins and husband Dwayne of Dallas, TX, John Robert Smith Jr. and wife Marcella of Dallas, TX, Phillip Smith of Houston, TX, Kevin Smith of Dallas, TX, Sandra Singer and husband Jeff of Richmond, TX, Diane Adamez and husband Jeff of Katy, TX, Sharon Pittman and husband, Steve of College Station, TX, Jessica Smith of Houston, TX and Joel Smith of Houston, TX; 12 great grandchildren: John Robert Smith III, Weston Smith, Katie Lynn Smith, Kristin Singer, Andrew Singer, Courtney Adamez, Matthew Adamez, Jennifer Adamez, Morgan Adamez, Jack Burley, Melissa Pittman, Bradley Pittman. She is also survived by her brother, Gail G. Bradley and wife Tina of Texas City, TX Vivian Bradley grew up in Goreville, Illinois during a time when her grandfather had a general store with a pickle barrel and old men gathered around a pot-bellied stove in the back. Her father was tragically killed in an explosion when she was only 13 years old and her mother died at an early age, events which drove her to provide a strong family unit for her children until she could no longer physically do so.

She met and married Arthur M. Smith in Alton, Illinois in 1935 and, after their wedding, they left directly for Chicago, Illinois where they both attended Moody Bible Institute. Thus began for them a life of Christian service that lasted for 60 years. She assisted her husband as a pastor’s wife, which included everything from teaching Sunday School to preparing dishes for covered dish suppers at the church.

Although she was first and foremost a mother, wife and homemaker, Vivian was involved in several activities outside the home. Beginning in 1955, Vivian worked with her husband in the travel business and operated Certified Tours, a company that specialized in group tours to the Holy Land. It was during these travels that she pursued a lifelong habit of collecting things for her home.

In the 1970’s Vivian worked on the Texas A&M campus in the registrar’s office where she helped innumerable Aggies during the class registration process. She nurtured those young men with the same enthusiasm she took care of her family, especially her grandchildren. As each arrived she would sew clothes for the newcomer and babysat all of them at one time or another. Vivian was an avid gardener and loved to till the soil. She especially enjoyed cultivating her flower garden at her home in College Station. She also loved to seek out unknown treasures in junk stores and second hand places, take them home, scrape off layers of paint and refinish lovely oak, walnut and maple furniture that she had paid next to nothing for. Even after she became bed ridden from breaking a leg on the third day of the new millennium, she could remember how much she paid for each piece and where she purchased it. Her three children and nine grandchildren’s homes are now furnished by many of these pieces.

Her loving generosity, overflowing heart and strength of character will be missed by family and friends.
