Weldon Bomar Jr.

July 22, 1919 - Jan. 8, 2002

LEAGUE CITY — Services for Weldon Bomar Jr., 82, of League City and formerly of Bryan are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Hillier Funeral Home. Rev. Tim Skaggs of Central Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Restever Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to service time on Saturday at Hillier Funeral Home.

Mr. Bomar died Tuesday at his residence.

He was born in Dallas. He owned an automobile dealership, was a 32nd degree mason and member of the Shrine Club. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include his wife, Margie McBride Bomar of League City; his two sons and daughters-in-law, Kevin and Barbara Bomar of Clear Lake and Bryan and Susan Bomar of Pearland.

Memorials may be made to the Building Fund of Central Baptist Church, 600 Coulter Drive, Bryan, 77803.

Dora Lyndle McVey Fuqua

June 7, 1919 - Jan. 9, 2002

PEARLAND — Services for Dora Lyndle McVey Fuqua, 82, of Pearland are set for 10 a.m. Friday at the Mt. Tabor Cemetery north of Madisonville. Lanier Stevens will officiate.

Arrangements are under the direction of Madisonville Funeral Home.

Mrs. Fuqua died Wednesday.

Born in Leon County, she was a homemaker and of the Church of Christ faith. She had been a resident of Pearland since 1996, having moved from Marble Falls.

She was preceded in death by her husband, M.J. Fuqua.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Beverly Fuqua of Pearland; her brother, Gus McVey of Madisonville; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Maxine Wiseman

Oct. 5, 1933 - Jan. 8, 2002

ADA, Okla. — Graveside service for Maxine Wiseman, 68, of Ada and formerly of Tishomingo are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Condon Grove Cemetery in Milburn. Rev. Tom Caldwell will officiate.

Ms. Wiseman died Tuesday at the Valley View Regional Hospital in Ada, Okla.

Arrangements are under the direction of Clark Funeral Service in Tishomingo, Okla.

She was born in Milburn and attended school there. She worked as a seamstress at Dee’s Manufacturing Co. in Tishomingo for more than 20 years and on an assembly line making telephone parts. She had resided in Ada for ten years.

Survivors include her three sons, Larry Wayne Wiseman of Tulsa, Okla., C. Ray Wiseman of Van Alstyne and Billy Joe Wiseman of Hominy, Okla.; two daughters, Brenda Sue Schoneman of Bryan and Jeanie Gail Robinson of Ada; her brother, Larry Alexander of Carlsbad, Texas; her three sisters, Wanda Jean Chadic of Crane, Texas, Georgia Crawford of Ruidoso, N.M., and Pat Hart of Noble, Okla.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Dr. Keith F. Schertz

Feb. 25, 1927 - Jan. 9, 2002

Services for Dr. Keith F. Schertz, 74, of Bryan are set for 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Center in College Station. A private family burial will be held at College Station Cemetery at a later date.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Hillier Funeral Home and a vigil will be held at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.Dr. Schertz died Wednesday at his residence.

He was born in El Paso, Ill. He was in the agriculture research service and was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He received his bachelor of science and master’s degrees from the University of Illinois and his Ph.D. from Cornell University in Ithica, N.Y. Dr. Schertz was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Center in College Station.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanette Schertz of Bryan; his four sons and daughters-in-law, Philip Schertz of College Station, Greg and Terry Schertz of Conifer, Colo., Peter Schertz and Andrea Avantaggio of Durango, Colo., and Paul and Kathy Schertz of Aloho. Ore.; his two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Jerry Huffman of Charleston, W.Va., and Laura and Ted Krum of Coppell; his two brothers and sisters-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Lyle Schertz of Front Royal, Va., and Dr. and Mrs. Cletus Schertz of White Bear Lake, Minn.; his sister-in-law, Ina Jean Schertz of Houston; his sister and brother-in-law, Rita and Ron Vermeulen of Reed City, Mich. and nine grandchildren.

George Phillips Jr.

July 13, 1927 - Jan. 8, 2002

Services for George Phillips Jr., 74, of Bryan are set for 1 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in Bryan. Rev. James Williams will officiate. Burial will be in the Grandview Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and from 8 to 11 a.m. Saturday at Daniel & Son Funeral Home.

Mr. Phillips died Tuesday at St. Joseph Rehabilitation Center.

He was born in Marlin and had been a resident of Bryan for most of his life. Mr. Phillips was a truck driver and served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Church of Christ on Martin Luther King Jr. East.

Survivors include his wife, Lula Phillips of Bryan; his three sons and daughters-in-law, George Phillips II of Bryan, Kenneth Ray and Rhonda Hewitt of Caldwell and Charles Harris and Debra Staten of Austin; his seven daughters and sons-in-law, Gloria Joyce and Johnnie Cooks of Bryan, Deborah Thomas of Bryan, Sylvia Harris of Oklahoma City, Okla., Jeanette and Norris Gill and Laura Phillips, all of Bryan, Opal Phillips of Mexia and Paula Phillips of Hearne; 33 grandchildren,14 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Memorials may be made to the Martin Luther King Church of Christ.

Doug Vice

Jan. 18, 1956 - Jan. 8, 2002

ROGERS, Ark. — Services for Doug Vice, 45, of Rogers, Ark. are set for 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Fellowship Bible Church Family Center in Lowell, Ark. Rev. Robert Cupp, Rev. Mickey Rapier and Rev. Russell Dorch will officiate. Burial will be in the Upper Clifty Cemetery in Clifty, Ark.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Fellowship Bible Church Family Center in Lowell.

Arrangements are under the direction of Stockdale Funeral Services of Bentonville, Ark.

Mr. Vice died Tuesday in Rogers. Ark.

He was born in Bryan. He attended Fellowship Bible Church in Lowell. He was a pawnbroker and owned his own business in Rogers.

Survivors include his wife, Anita Hudgins Vice of Rogers, Ark.; his three sons, Kelby and Dustin Vice and Robert Hudgins, all of Rogers; his daughter, Brandie Ferguson of Rogers; his brother, David Stephens of San Francisco, Calif.; his two sisters, Debra McGinty of North Zulch and Linda Collins of Liberty Hill; and two grandchildren.

Memorials can be made at Simmons First Bank in memory of Doug Vice which will be sent to the “Now is the Time” fund at Fellowship Bible Church in Lowell.

Robbie Lynn Merchant

Nov. 8, 1929 - Jan. 6, 2002

BEDIAS — Services for Robbie Lynn Merchant, 72, of Bedias, are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Wilson Chapel United Methodist Church in Madisonville.

Rev. P.W. Spencer of Greater Faith Baptist Church will officiate.

Arrangements are under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home in Madisonville.

Mrs. Merchant died Sunday.

She was born in Grimes County, attended Grimes County schools and was a member of Lone Star Baptist Church. Survivors include her three daughters, Thelma Faye Merchant, Remonia Merchant and Marie Merchant, all of Madisonville; her seven sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Barbara Merchant of Texas City, Paul and Jonnie Merchant and Jerry and Alicia Merchant, all of Madisonville, Johnny Ray Merchant and John Merchant, both of Bryan, Earl and Melva Merchant of Oklahoma City, Okla., Billy Byrd and Brenda Merchant of Fort Worth and Burnis Merchant of Houston; her sister, Ode Jones of Ennis; her brother, Gus Merchant of Madisonville; 25 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Mable Arrington Richards

May 14, 1905 - Jan. 9, 2002

HOUSTON — Services for Mable Arrington Richards, 96, of Houston are set for 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Martinville Baptist Church in Navasota. Rev. Tonnie Charles Hubbard Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in the McDonald Cemetery in Navasota.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Jones Funeral Home.

Mrs. Richards died Wednesday at L.B.J. Hospital in Houston.

She was born in Grimes County.

Survivors include her sons, John H. Russell of Houston and Willie C. Manning of Navasota; her four daughters, Ora Lee Hubbard of Navasota, Carrie B. Delane of Houston, Madie B. Basset of Navasota and Dorothy Jennings of Houston; her brother, Phillip Arrington of Navasota; 37 grandchildren, 111 great-grandchildren and 44 great-great-grandchildren.

Bob James Campbell Sr.

April 8, 1942 - Jan. 9, 2002

Services for Bob James Campbell Sr., 59, of Bryan are set for 1 p.m. Sunday at Callaway-Jones Funeral Home. Rev. David Johnson will officiate.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Mr. Campbell died Wednesday at his residence.

He was born in Brazos County and was a lifetime resident. He was a veterinarian assistant at El Cerrito Animal Clinic for many years prior to his retirement.

Oscar Leon Wade Sr.

Jan. 23, 1970 - Jan. 6, 2002

HEARNE— Services for Oscar Leon Wade Sr., 31, of Hearne are set for 11 a.m. Saturday at Old Elam Baptist Church in Hearne.

The Rev. H.R. Taylor will officiate. Burial will be in the Greater Riverside Cemetery in Hearne.

Family hour will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the church.

Arrangements are under the direction of Paul Funeral Home in Marlin.

Mr. Wade died Sunday.

He was born in Gary, Ind. and was employed by Texas A&M University.

Survivors include his wife, Julie Wade of Gary, Ind.; his sons, Arlen R. Wade of Gary, Ind., and Oscar Wade Jr. of Franklin; his daughter, JaTerika A. Wade-Owens of Hearne; his parents, Jimmie Wade III and Ruby Wade of Hearne; his brother, Jimmie Wade IV of Hearne; his sister, Felicia Wade Flowers of Hearne; his mother-in-law, Arlene Taliaferro of Gary, Ind; his grandparents, Jimmie Ruth Fuller (Roosevelt) of Hearne and Jimmie Wade Jr. and Iris of Houston; and a host of relatives and friends.

Theresa M. (Pat) Opersteny

March 10, 1918 - Jan. 10, 2002

Services for Theresa M. “Pat” Opersteny, 83, of Bryan are set for 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Monsignor John McCaffrey will officiate. Entombment will be at the Monsignor Gleissner Mausoleum.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan.

A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Friday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan.

Mrs. Opersteny died Thursday at St. Joseph Regional Health Center.

She was born in Barling, Ark., and lived in Bryan since 1945. She was a homemaker and member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter C. Opersteny.

Survivors include her son, Billy Opersteny of Bryan; her daughters and sons-in-law, Charlene and Eddie Luna of College Station, Kathy and Ron Hathcox of Bryan and Darlene McVey of Madisonville; her brother, Vincent Maledon of Peoria Heights, Ill.; her sisters, Francis Weir of Springfield, Pa., Alice LaBrosse of Cumberland, R.I., Anna Turner of Prairie Grove, Ark., and Irma Altstatt of Fort Smith, Ark.; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Edward and Laura Opertseny of College Station; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
