Vivian Ruth Smith

Vivian Ruth Smith, daughter of the late J.D. and Mary Christine Hunt, was born in Kaufman County on Jan. 20, 1940, and passed away Aug. 27, 2003, in Dallas. She lived all of her life in Kaufman county.

She married Lillian B. Smith on Dec. 4, 1954, and was preceded in death by her husband and two brothers, Billy and Gary Hunt.

She is survived by five sons, Bobby, Randy, Mark, Timothy and Larry Smith, all of Kaufman; two daughters, Lisa Carmona of Terrell and Shelly Mitcham of Quinlan; sister Jimmie Sue Peters of Farmers Branch; 15 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held in the Chapel of Goggans Funeral Home in Terrell on Aug. 30, 2003. Interment followed at Morrow Chapel cemetery in the Ola Community.

Emma Bell Clayton

Emma Bell Clayton was born in Rosser on Feb. 28, 1938, to Henry and Mary Bryant Clemmons. Emma passed away in Kaufman on Aug. 27, 2003.

Emma was raised in Rosser and lived there all her life. On Oct. 19, 1957, she married James Thomas Clayton in Rosser.

Emma retired in 1999 from Fuller Uniform Company in Kaufman. She was a member of Grays Prairie Missionary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Hershel Clemmons.

Emma is survived by her husband, James T. Clayton, of Rosser; daughter Lori Kreder of Ross, Texas; brother Floyd Clemmons of Rosser; sisters Helen Dunavant of Kemp, Effie York of Grays Prairie and Gladys Revis of DePort, Texas.

Funeral services were held Friday, Aug. 29, 2003, at the Parker-Ashworth Chapel with Rev. Todd Peavy and Rev. G. W. Hullett officiating. Interment followed in Cottonwood cemetery.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Parker-Ashworth Funeral Home of Kaufman.

Mary Lillian Bednar

Mary Lillian Bednar was born in Kaufman on May 12, 1932, to John and Stella Pechal Duyka. Mary passed away in a Kaufman hospital on Aug. 24, 2003.

Mary was raised in Warsaw and lived all her life there. She was a member of the Saint Ann Catholic Church of Kaufman. On Feb. 3, 1953, she married Harry Bednar in Kaufman.

Mary is survived by her husband, Harry Bednar, of Warsaw; sons Paul Bednar of Bristol, William Bednar of Warsaw, Robert Bednar of Seagoville, John Bednar of Peeltown and Steve Bednar of Warsaw; daughters Mary Hendricks of Grand Prairie, Ann Bednar Brosch of West, Teresa Shields of Crandall and Judy Bednar of Seagoville; brother John Duyka of Warsaw; sisters Betty Jurick of Dallas, Ann Jakubik of Dallas and Millie Svrcek of Dallas; 20 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Rosary was recited at Saint Ann Catholic Church on Monday, and Mass of Christian burial was Aug. 26 at Saint Ann Catholic Church. Interment followed in Kaufman cemetery.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Parker-Ashworth Funeral Home of Kaufman.

Ken Durell Sr.

Memorial services for Ken Durell Sr., 80, of Kaufman were held 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at Anderson Clayton Bros. Chapel with Rev. Jan Fletcher officiating. Interment will take place at a later date in the DFW National cemetery in Grand Prairie under the direction of Anderson Clayton Bros. of Kaufman.

Mr. Durell was born Aug. 7, 1923, in Plattsmouth, Neb., to the late W.G. and Nettie (Vallery) Durell and passed away Aug. 28, 2003, in Kaufman. He was Methodist by faith and was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in World War II.

Survivors include his sons, Ken Durell Jr. of Vallejo, Calif., and Robert Sheraton Vogle of Kaufman; daughters Sandra E. Sea of Dallas and Vanessa D. Istre and her husband, O’Day, of Kaufman; and grandson Gary P. Usey Jr. of Kaufman.

Tony Dean

Tony Dean was born in Dallas on Oct. 30, 1984, to William Tracy Dean and Laura Ann Flurry. Tony passed away on Aug. 27, 2003.

Tony was a member of the Scurry Volunteer Fire Depart-ment and the Future Farmers of America. Tony was a senior at Scurry-Rosser High School and worked for Janico Builders in Kaufman. He attended Cottage Heights Baptist Church in Kaufman.

Tony is survived by his parents, Tracy and Angel Dean of Scurry and Laura and Kevin James of California; fiancee Danielle McGee; sister Diana Flurry of Kaufman; stepbrother Kyle Martin of Scurry; stepsisters Tracey Martin of Scurry and Misty Martin of Scurry; grandparents Sammy Sloan, G. W. and Loretta Dean, Cathy Garrett, Gloria White, Robert Flurry and Barbara Waldrop; great grandparents Vera Williams, Ioma Dean and Ida Roddy; aunts and uncles Terry Dean, Melissa Dean, Rick Flurry, Paul Flurry, Amanda Martinez, Duke and Lance James, Chris and Sloan Taliaferro, Sheri and Doug York and Cindy White; niece Allison Dean; cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Aug. 30, 2003, at Cottage Heights Baptist Church in Kaufman with Rev. Todd Peavy, Bill Hooten and Dan Baum officiating. Interment followed in Mt. Olive cemetery in Scurry.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Parker-Ashworth Funeral Home of Kaufman.

Nelda Ruth Norris Ford

Graveside services for Nelda Ruth Norris Ford, 72, of Winters, Texas, were held 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003, in the Crandall cemetery with Rev. Rick Hargrove officiating. Interment followed under the direction of Anderson Clayton Bros. of Kaufman.

Mrs. Ford was born July 24, 1931, to the late Sidney D. and Faye (Bracey) Norris in Styx Community, Texas, and passed away Aug. 30, 2003, in Winters. She was a member of the Gateway Baptist Church in Winters.

Survivors include her son, Tom Ford, of Winters; grandchildren Lance Ford and his wife, Kim, of McKinney and Lourie Ford Ferrell and her husband, Ken, of McKinney; great grandchildren Kallan Ferrell, Sydney Ferrell, Kennedy Ferrell, Cade Ford, Jake Ford and McKenzie Ford; sisters Norma Morrow of Lavon, Gladys Horton of Mesquite and Linda Tidwell Lindale; brother Joe Norris of Terrell; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Margaret Erwin Barnard

Funeral services for Margaret Erwin Barnard, 76, of Kaufman were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2003, in the Anderson Clayton Bros. Chapel with Rev. Royce Turner and Rev. G.W. Hullett officiating. Interment followed in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Seagoville under the direction of Anderson Clayton Bros. of Kaufman.

Mrs. Barnard was born May 2, 1927, to the late Albert E. and Mittie (Edgett) Erwin and passed away Aug. 29, 2003, in Kaufman. She was a member of Grays Prairie Missionary Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her brother, Ed Erwin, and sons Ronnie Barnard, Steve Palmer, and Rusty Palmer.

Survivors include her husband, Aaron Barnard, of Kaufman; children Cheryl Corbin and her husband, James, of Gilmer, Rita Trexler of Allen, Tamma Evans of Duncanville, and William Barnard of Azle; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and siblings Paul Erwin of Glenn Heights and Beth Patterson and her husband, Kenneth, of Jefferson.

Pallbearers were Allen Barnard, Aaron Barnard, Joe Bryan, Arthur Rodriguez, Danny Corbin and James Corbin.

Robert L. Long Sr.

Robert L. Long Sr. was born Oct. 30, 1930, and passed away on Sept. 23, 2003, at his home in Kaufman.

Robert retired from the USDA Soil Conservation in 1990.

Services were held at the First Assembly of God on Sept. 29, 2003 in Kaufman.

Robert is survived by his wife, Jannie, 8 children, 17 grandchildren, one great-grandson, three sisters, and two brothers.

Mattie B. Cope

Mattie B. Cope was born June 14, 1920, in Quitman, Texas, to William and Fanny Walker Caves. Mattie passed away at her home in Scurry, Texas, on Oct. 18, 2003.

Mattie was raised in East Texas and moved to Dallas where she lived most of her life. She moved to Canton, Texas, in 1978 and moved to Scurry in 1998. Mattie was a member of the Round Flat Pentecostal Church.

In 1937 she married Albert Woodrow Cope in Marshall, Texas, and he preceded her in death. Mattie is survived by her sons, Durrell Cope of Dallas, Eldon Cope of Mesquite, and Randell Cope of Grand Saline; daughters Rogena Williams of Scurry and Barbara Alexander of Crandall; brother Lowell Caves of Mesquite; sisters Novice Powell of Mineola and Ola Eldridge of Greenville; 12 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003, at 2 p.m. at Parker-Ashworth Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Homer Morgan and Rev. Eddie Paul Stanley officiating. Interment followed in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Parker-Ashworth Funeral Home of Kaufman.

Ronnie “Dick” Tallas

Ronnie “Dick” Tallas was born in Warsaw on July 2, 1940, to Roman and Bessie Hucek Tallas. Dick passed away in Fort Worth on Oct. 13, 2003.

Dick was raised in Kaufman and lived most of his life in Kaufman. He was a plumber for 40 years.

Dick is survived by his sons, Brady Tallas and his wife, Terra, of Flower Mound, Chad Tallas of Irving, and Andy Tallas and his wife, Melissa, of Kerens; brother Rudy Tallas of Kaufman; sister Roberta Florez of Dallas; grandchildren Christopher Tallas and Blake Tallas; and special friends Wayne and Sherry Smith and Grover and Wanda Calhoun.

Funeral services were held Oct. 16, 2003, at Parker-Ashworth Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Joseph A. Mehon Jr. officiating and interment in Kaufman cemetery.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Parker-Ashworth Funeral Home of Kaufman.

Patsy Jean Baker

Patsy Jean Baker was born in Scurry on July 4, 1935, to Clarence and Lillian Eubanks Covington. She passed away at her home in Dallas on May 12, 2003.

Baker was raised in Scurry and graduated from Kaufman High School in 1953. She graduated from North Texas State College in Denton in 1957.

She was a member of the Daughters of American Revolution, past President of the North Dallas Women’s Republican Club and a member of the Park Central Baptist Church in Dallas.

Baker married Alvin Baker in Scurry on Jan. 18, 1957. She is survived by her husband, Alvin Baker of Dallas; daughter Cindy Shefca of Scurry; grandchildren Sean Hubbard of Dallas, Dustin Hubbard of Scurry and Sarah Hubbard of Whitewright; brother-in-law Pat Baker of Scurry; sisters-in-law Jane Covington Reed of Dallas and JoNell Baker of Scurry; nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Funeral services were held Friday, May 16, 2003, at 2 p.m. at the Parker-Ashworth Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jerry Griffin officiating. Interment followed in Kaufman cemetery. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Parker-Ashworth Funeral Home of Kaufman.

Kendill Ray Warrick

Kendill Ray Warrick was born in Maryville, Tenn., to A. B. and Ethel Graves Warrick on March 11, 1939. Ken passed away at his home in Crandall on May 8, 2003.

Warrick was raised in Dallas, entered the U. S. Army in 1956 and received an honorable discharged in 1962. He moved to Crandall in 1965 and in 1959 he married Margaret Terrell in Dallas.

Warrick was preceded in death by one son and is survived by his wife, Margaret Warrick, of Crandall; son Kendill Bennett of Lubbock; daughters Traci Ford of Dallas and DeJona Ray of Garland; sister Caryland Hamby of Tennessee; grandchildren Jennifer Ford, Jerry Ford, Christopher Lee, Shawna Bennett and Jordan Ray and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Saturday May 10, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Parker-Ashworth Funeral Home with Rev. Billy Ray Thomas officiating. Interment followed in Crandall cemetery.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Parker-Ashworth Funeral Home of Kaufman, Texas.

Darrell N. Struck

Darrell N. Struck of Garland was born Nov. 30, 1923, in Kaufman County, Texas. He passed away May 13, 2003, at his residence in Garland, Texas.

Struck was preceded in death by wife Ruby Smith Struck in 1989. He is survived by identical twin brother, Harrell Struck; daughter Deborah Stanton; daughter Rhoda Tannheimer and husband Timothy; granddaughter Jessica Tannheimer; granddaughter Amy Natcher and husband John; great grandson Bergin Natcher; and numerous other relatives.

He graduated from Scurry-Rosser High School. Darrell served during World War II in the Army in the Aleutian Islands. He retired from U.S. Steel.

Services were May 17, 2003, at Restland Wildwood Chapel. Interment followed in Restland Memorial Park.

Starr Clyda Gallegos

Starr Clyda Gallegos was born in Atoka, Okla., on Feb. 19, 1940, to Charlie and Dama Johnson Mansell. She passed away in a Dallas hospital on May 17, 2003.

Gallegos was raised in west Texas and moved to Kaufman in 1970. For many years she was self employed.

On Nov. 4, 1961, she married Alex Gallegos in Las Vegas, Nev. She is survived by her husband, Alex Gallegos, of Kaufman; daughter Liza Freeman of Garland; grandson Brandon Barnett of Garland; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 20, 2003, at the Parker-Ashworth Chapel with Rev. D. G. Council officiating. Interment will followed in Rose Hill cemetery.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Parker-Ashworth Funeral Home of Kaufman.

Kelly Elizabeth January

Kelly Elizabeth January of Combine was born in Dallas on Feb. 4, 1965, to James Edwin and Kathleen Collier Davis. Kelly passed away in Tarrant County on June 7, 2003.

Kelly was raised in Dallas and graduated from Lake Highlands High School in 1983. She worked for Roberts’ Auto for 15 years. Kelly was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Kaufman.

She is survived by her daughters, Ellen Maree January and Emily Jane January of Kaufman; parents James E. and Kathy Davis of Kaufman; sisters Shelby Lynn Davis of Garland, Wendy M. Flatt of Irving and Sandi Graham of Plano; niece Katie Beth Flatt of Irving; brother-in-law Shawn Flatt of Irving; friends Bruce January, John and Glenda Miller, Jeff and Bambi Miller, Mallory and Jamieson Miller, Robert and Frankie Ann Williams, Bob and Shelly Williams, Martha and Fred Watts, Cristy and Art, Sherri and Shawn, Patricia and Tom, Billie Schultz, Sandi Graham, Sherilyn, Mark Selz and Kim McCaulley.

Funeral services were held June 11, 2003, at the First United Methodist Church of Kaufman with Rev. John Gondol officiating. Interment was in Kaufman cemetery.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Parker-Ashworth Funeral Home of Kaufman.

In lieu of flowers, a trust has been created for her children, Ellen and Emily January. Contributions may be sent to Brown-McCarrell LLT, 2001 Ross Avenue, Suite 2000, Dallas, Texas 75201, attention: Richard Cox. Checks should be made payable to Robert Williams, Trustee.

Penny Melissa Uyvonne McCool

Penny Melissa Uyvonne McCool was born in Pensacola, Fla., on Feb. 16, 1967, to Jimmie Ray Bohanon and Pearley Louise Shreves. Penny passed away at her home in Scurry on June 8, 2003. She has lived in the Scurry community since 1977.

Penny worked for Resistol Hat Brands in Garland for 12 years. She married James E. McCool in Warsaw on September 29, 1984.

She is survived by her husband, James McCool Jr. of Scurry; sons: James Ray McCool, Robert Wesley McCool and Bobby Joe McCool all of Scurry; daughter Penny M. McCool of Scurry; mother Louise Bohanon of Oklahoma; father Jimmie Bohanon of Scurry; brothers and sisters-in-law Micheal and Gloria Bohanon, Keith and Karen Bohanon, Jeff and Pam Bohanon, Kem Bohanon, Kelly and Margaret Bohanon, Sean and Tonya Bohanon and Randy Bohanon; sisters and brothers-in-law Pamela and David Holder, Peggy and Tinker Prock; grandmother Mary Butler; father-in-law James McCool Sr.; and mother-in-law Gail McCool.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at 10 a.m. at the Parker-Ashworth Chapel with Rev. Todd Peavy officiating. Interment followed in Mt. Olive cemetery in Scurry. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Parker-Ashworth Funeral Home of Kaufman.
