William F. McCrystal, Jr.

Major William F. McCrystal, Jr., USAF (Ret.) was born in Medford, Massachusetts, on February 18, 1924, and died in San Antonio, on October 15, 2002, after a long, agonizing illness. He bore his affliction with great courage, patience and grace. He was a highly decorated fighter pilot, the captain of the high-school track team, competing in short and long races, pole vaulting, and high jumping. Well into his old age, he still ran in the Boston Marathon. He was a gifted musician, highly extroverted, sang, and played numerous instruments, and as a teenager, had his own band. He was an English major and Russian minor in college. He was preceded in death by his lovely wife, Captain Mary Z. McCrystal (1960) and his long time love, Irene (Cha Cha) Banas (1998); his parents, Colonel and Mrs. William F. McCrystal, Sr.; and his sister, Shirley McCrystal Walsh. Survivors include his sister, Dr. Irene McCrystal of Mico, TX, who relished his company; his best friend, Gerry Szczebak of Chicopee, Massachusetts; several cousins, one nephew and one grandnephew. Au revoir, charming Billy, till we meet again.

LaVerne Hazel, age 80, died on Wednesday, October 16, 2002, in San Antonio, TX. She graduated from Evant High School and received a Bachelors Degree from Wayland Baptist University. She was preceded in death by, husband, Willie C. Hazel; father, Thomas H. Alexander; mother Delphia Glover Alexander; step-mother, Stella H. Alexander, brothers, Marvin Alexander and J.B. Alexander. She is survived by children, Thomas F. Hazel, Judy E. and husband, Frank Wade and Verna Lee and husband, Charles Wood; brothers, Leamon G. and wife, Rosalie Williams and Stanley E. Williams; sister, Bettye J. and husband, Gene Ray; grandchildren, Kimberly D. Magnuson, Dana L. Whitmire, Rhianna L. Ramirez, Stoney R. Smith, Susan McDonald and Michael Brown; and seven great-grandchildren.

Robert Linkfield, age 71, of San Antonio, died on Sunday, October 13, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Susie Linkfield of San Antonio; daughter, Sonia Linkfield of New York City, NY; stepdaughters, Carla Pisarro Sherman and husband Dr. David Sherman of San Antonio, and Angela Brugno of Middleburg, VA; and stepgrandchildren, Nicholas and Alexis Sherman of San Antonio, and Violeta Brugno-Cruz of Middleburg, VA.

Clifford Eugene Taylor
Born in San Antonio, Texas on Feb. 4, 1922

Clifford E. Taylor, Maj. USAF (Ret.), passed away October 11, 2002, at the age of 80. He was a graduate of Jefferson High School (as were all nine of his children), class of 1940. He served in the Army Air Corp as a Navigator/Bombadier in WWII, where he was shot down while on a mission over Germany and held as a P.O.W., until liberated. Maj. Taylor went on to serve a distinguished career in the USAF, retiring in 1960. He then joined Civil Service and retired as the Chief of Aviation Maintenance Training at Kelly Air Force Base in 1986. In his retirement, he was content and surrounded by his loving family. He will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, Archie and Bertha Taylor and brothers, Vic and Leonard. He is survived by: his loving wife of 60 years, Doris; nine children, Clifford, Jr., Patrick, Mary Valerie, Ken, Bonnie, Billy, Susie, Russell; and a sister, Dorothy Bergquist; nineteen grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and devoted Wolfhound, Kelli.

Dorothy Jeraldine Guise

Dorothy J. Guise, age 78, of San Antonio, died Saturday, October 12, 2002. Mrs. Guise was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas F. Guise, Sr. Survivors: sons, Tom Guise, Jr. and wife, Janet and Jerry Guise and wife, Elaine; daughter, Mitzi Guise-Atkins and husband, Rob; grandchildren, Jenika Guise, all of San Antonio, Stacey Golenski, Denver, CO, Tom Guise III, FL and Lindsay Guise, San Antonio; 2 great grandchildren, Tristan Guise, FL and Spencer Golenski, CO; brother, Joe K. Holbrook and wife, Punky, San Antonio.

Cathy A. Morris

Cathy A. Morris, age 46, died Friday, October 11, 2002. She was a loving mother and a nursing student. Cathy is survived by her children, Matthew Morris and Corey Morris, brother Ron Christesson, parents, David and Barbara Stubblefield.

Estellyn A. Achning
Born in Atlanta, Texas on Jun. 12, 1909
Died Feb. 5, 2003 and resided in San Antonio, TX.

Estellyn Allday (Mrs. Walter J.) Achning, age 93, passed away on Wednesday, February 5, 2003. Born June 12, 1909, in Atlanta, Texas, daughter of Thomas Elbert and Mary Willie Roberts Allday.
She graduated from Wichita Falls High School, attended Kidd Key College and Conservatory, Taos Field School of the University of New Mexico, 1940-42, Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, 1944-46, and had private instruction with Henry Lee McFee, Andrew Dasburg and Charles Rosen, 1938-42.
She received the Short Story Award, Writer’s Digest in 1932; Texas Fine Arts Association painting award 1945; Southern States Art League Lassiter award winner, 1945; elected into membership of the National Association of Women Artists in 1940 where she exhibited from 1941-46. She also exhibited her art at Midwestern Artists-1942; Denver Art Museum, 1945; Corpus Christi Caller-Times Exhibit, 1953, and locally where she also won awards. She was illustrator of the Book of Impossible Things in 1938, and authored “A Real Daughter of the Confederacy” in 1961; “Historical Southern Families” and “Our Heritage”, San Antonio Genealogical and Historical Society; and “The Kinnard Journal”. She was made a Fellow of International Institute of Arts and Letters in 1960; Fellow of the Southern Society of Genealogists, 1963, and in 1965 a Fellow of the San Antonio Genealogical and Historical Society. She served on the San Antonio Art Institute Board of Directors 1947-59 and on it’s advisory Board 1959-62, San Antonio Art League 1st V. President 1946-48, and President 1948-50. During this time she helped create the Art Jamboree. In 1947, she was asked to join the Board of Trustees of the Witte Museum. She also served as educational chairman for the American Cancer Society, South Texas District, 1951-53. Mrs. Achning was a charter member and corresponding Secretary of the San Antonio Genealogical and Historical Society, 1959-61, Vice President 1961-63, Board of Directors, 1961-63; Texas State Genealogical Society District Representative, 1961-63 and curator, 1963, 1965 and 1967. She was a member of The Genealogical Society, London, England, The National Genealogical Society, Southwest Genealogical Society and the New England Historical and Genealogical Society, The San Antonio De Bexar Chapter D.A.R.; Governor Richard Preston Chapter Colonial Dames 17th Century; San Antonio Colony Magna Carta Dames; San Antonio Company Jamestown Society of Virginia; Descendents of the Most Noble Order of the Garter; Americans of Royal Descent; Colonial Order of the Crown; The Plantagenet Society; Capt. Augustus Jones Chapter-U.S. Daughters of 1812; Albert Sidney Johnson Chapter-United Daughters of the Confederacy.
Mrs. Achning attended Christ Episcopal Church and enjoyed membership in the Green Hand Garden Club; San Antonio Conversation Society; The Argyle Club; San Antonio Country Club and was an avid bridge player, becoming a Life Master in the American Contract Bridge League in 1968. She also won awards at the regional and local level and contended with Bobby Wolff.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 60 years, Walter, whom she married June 29, 1927. She is survived by her two daughters, Annalyn A. Gates of San Antonio and Nancy A. Muldoon and husband, William III of Craig, CO; her grandchildren, Deborah Lyn Raider, Melissa Raider Keahey and husband, David, all of San Antonio, William Muldoon, IV and wife, Rhonda of The Woodlands, Shevaun Muldoon Sirmans and husband, Stacy of Houston; and numerous great-grandchildren. Mrs. Achning’s family wishes to thank her wonderful caregivers: Brenda Bradley, Millie Sanchez, Alicia Shepard, Eleanor West and April Mocgygemba and her devoted doctors, Dr. Harold Grant (deceased), Dr. David Grant and Dr. Lon Smith.

Eva McDaniel Milstead

Eva McDaniel Milstead died Saturday, January 18, 2003 at the age of 83. She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Pat Milstead; two daughters, Terry Masters and Lindy McDaniel; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Major Irene Knolle(US Army Ret.)
Born in Washington, TX on Jul. 3, 1923
Died Dec. 30, 2002 and resided in Austin, TX.

Major Irene (“Tex”) Knolle(US Army, Ret.) died peacefully at Seton Medical center in Austin, Texas on Monday December 30, 2002 at the age of 79. Born July 3, 1923 in Washington County, Texas, to Dr. Ellwood William and Elsie Grebe Knolle, Irene spent her childhood in the Giddings and Brenham communities where her grandfather also practiced medicine and pharmacology. She later graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in journalism. On March 16, 1944, Irene entered the U.S. Army as a second Lieutenant. In her 20-year military career, she earned the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal. Irene served in the European Theatre of Operations (ETO) during WWII and was assistant to General Mark Clark in Japan after WWII ended. In 1964, Irene retired from active military service to the Austin Hill Country, where she enjoyed serving as a member of the local volunteer fire company. She is survived by first cousins Helen Henderson, Mildred New, Len Grebe, Herb Grebe, Carol Sims, Charles Grebe, and Helen Margaret Watters, as well as numerous loving second and third cousins

Clinton Ellis Murphy
Born in Pandora, Texas on Sep. 28, 1917
Died Jan. 2, 2003 and resided in Austin, TX.

Clinton Ellis (Pat) Murphy, age 85, born September 28, 1917, in Pandora, Wilson County, TX, died Thursday, January 2, 2003 in Austin, Texas.
He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School, San Antonio in 1935. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Natural Gas Engineering from Texas A & I College in Kingsville, TX, and his Master of Science Degree in Industrial Engineering and Management from Oklahoma State University.
He served with the 9th Army Air Force in Europe during World War II as an Aviation Ordnance Officer with the rank of Captain.
He was a member of Manor Baptist Church in San Antonio for approximately 28 years, where he served as Deacon for about 24 years. After moving to Austin in 1992, he became a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church.
He was a licensed professional Engineer, life member of both Texas and National Societies of Professional Engineers, and life member of Texas Teachers Association. During his long career in the fields of teaching and engineering, he taught at Jefferson High School, his Alma Mater, retired from San Antonio College in 1981 and then was self-employed as a consulting engineer for several years prior to his retirement to Austin.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Freida Tutschke Murphy, December 5, 2002; son, Captain Alfred Walker Murphy, US Army, June 1967, in Vietnam; parents, Frank and Ida Murphy; and sister, Evva Lee Jones. Survivors include his niece, Sheila Gail (Dr. Earl) Gully of Mobile, Alabama; nephew, Paul Franklin (Kathleen) Jones of Bastrop, TX; and other relatives.
