Martinez, four sons, five daughters, one step-son, and several grandchildren . He will be remembered as a loving and caring husband and father to his family. The rosary will be held on Sunday at 7:00 P.M. in Porter Loring Chapel. A procession will depart of Monday at 9:30 A.M. from Porter Loring for a funeral mass at 10:00 A.M. at St. Timothy’s Catholic Church . Interment in San Fernando cemetery #3.

Norborn “Skip” Carter Berkeley, age 43, born on April 9, 1959 in Frankfurt, Germany, passed away on Wednesday, December 11, 2002 in San Antonio, TX. He graduated from Stephen F. Austin with a Bachelors Degree in Forestry. He was a certified Arborist and District Manager for Davey Tree. He was a member of the International Society of Arborculture, member of BOMA (Building Owners Management Association) and Texas Association of Landscape Contractors. Beloved husband of Julie Ancy Berkeley; father of Danielle, Bethany, Landon and Mckenna; son of LTC. Charles C. Berkeley, Jr. (Ret) and Elsie L. Berkeley; brother of Charles C. Berkeley, III; sister Catherine Berkeley-Jones and husband, Cordell; uncle of numerous nieces and nephews. We turn to talk to you and you are not there. We hold you so close in thought, it’s hard to understand that you aren’t here with us. You are really missed and loved so much.

Clifford James Jefferis
Born in East Gary, Indiana on Sep. 28, 1924

Clifford James Jefferis, wonderful husband, father, grandfather, uncle, musician, businessman, civil leader, and lover of all things, passed away Saturday December 14, 2002. Cliff was born September 28, 1924 in East Gary, Indiana to Cecil James Jefferis and Isa Claire Bullock, and has been a resident of San Antonio since 1971. He is survived by his wife, Adah-Marie Sathe Jefferis, and his daughter, Leslie Marie Jefferis, and her children, Jon Andrew Norman, James Jefferis Norman and Anne Marie Norman; son, Bruce Andrew Jefferis, his wife Marina and their children, Phillip Andrew Jefferis, Allison Marie Jefferis, Paul Clifford Jefferis; his daughter LeeAnn Marie Coburn, husband Russell and their children, Michele Marie Arrieta, Benjamin Jefferis Collins; and his step grandchildren Devan Grey Coburn and Charlotte Alisa Coburn. He is also survived by his sister Coral Claire Wygent, and sisters and brothers-in-law including Genevieve Holisky, Joan and Philip O'Hara, and Doris and Bruce Sathe. He was also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.
Cliff was a remarkably talented man in many ways, but is best known for his music. As a teenager, he sang in the Gary Indiana Municipal Chorus, and with his clarinet he won gold medals in state and national solo clarinetist competitions. In 1943 he enlisted in the Navy and enrolled in the Navy School of Music. He earned a prized assignment as narrator, announcer, and clarinetist for the United States Navy Band in Washington, D.C. He also spent many years singing in church choirs including nearly thirty years with Christ Lutheran Church. In San Antonio, he sang for many years with the San Antonio Choral Society and the Symphony Master Singers. Throughout his life he also loved playing his clarinet and saxophone in many stage bands.
After his Navy service, Cliff began his business career in the banking business in California, but soon moved to Washington, D.C. to begin his career in insurance. He joined GEICO Insurance Company in 1949, rising rapidly to the position of Vice President. In 1970, he was recruited by USAA to run their European headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany. Cliff and the family moved to USAA's home office in San Antonio in 1971. He rose to the position of Senior Vice President, Underwriting, and retired in 1983. Cliff was also a national leader in insurance professional education. He has served as a national director of the Society of CPCU, and as a member of the Board of Ethical Inquiry of the American Institute of Property and Liability Underwriters, among many other professional organizations and responsibilities.
Cliff was also a true civic leader, giving much of his time to many organizations that serve the community. He served as Chairman of the Board for South Texas Regional Blood Bank. He was also Chairman of the San Antonio Chapter of the American Red Cross and Disaster Services Committee. He also served very actively at Christ Lutheran Church, which brought him great happiness. This service included tenure as President of the Congregation. Cliff was most recently active in the San Antonio support group of the American Parkinson’s Association. Cliff had an extraordinary range of personal interests, and literally no subject escaped his attention. He was an artist in any medium, most known for his wonderfully eccentric mobiles. He loved virtually all outdoor activities, in particular fishing, biking, jogging, skiing, and camping. His love of all people and all things is what truly distinguished the life of this great man.

Verna Todd, age 89, of San Antonio, died Saturday, December 14, 2002. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, gracious friend and cook extraordinaire. She was preceded in death by her son, Bennett E. Todd, Jr. Survivors: Beloved husband of 67 years, Bennett E. Todd; daughter, Beverly Madison and husband, Joe, Floresville, TX; four grandchildren; four great grandchildren; three sisters.

Aurora Cruz Guerra, age 86, of San Antonio, died Sunday, December 15, 2002. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elique Guerra. Survivors: sons, Robert C. Rios and wife, Virginia, Helotes, TX and Alexander H. Guerra and wife, Alice, San Antonio; daughter, Viola Guerra, San Antonio; step-son, Ernest Guerra, San Antonio; 9 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; sisters, Ofelia Mariscal and Ramona Sorola and husband, John, both of San Antonio. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the Staff of Manor Care and Christus Santa Rosa Hospice for the care and dedication to our mother's’needs.

Dr. Samuel C. Dunn, age 84, of Comfort, TX, died on Tuesday, December 17, 2002 in Kerrville, TX.
He practiced Pediatrics in Kingsville, TX for over 30 years before retiring to Lake Corpus Christi, San Antonio, and lastly Comfort.
He was born in Sonora, Texas on February 25, 1918.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth H. Dunn; and grandson, S. Chester Dunn, II.
He is survived by his sons, Dr. Neil M. Dunn and wife, Maureen of Comfort; and Dr. Bruce C. Dunn and wife, Kathy of Edmond, Oklahoma; grandsons, N. Marshall Dunn, Jr. and wife, Kelly of Keller, TX; Bryan C. Dunn and Kevin F. Dunn and wife, Jennifer, all of Edmond, Oklahoma; and great-grandchildren, Margaret R. Dunn and James G. Dunn, both of Keller, TX, and Sydni M. Dunn of Edmond, Oklahoma.

James W. Hunt

James W. Hunt, age 87, of San Antonio, Texas, died on Sunday, December 15, 2002.
He was very active and served as the Director of Juvenile Services at Oakland County Probate Court. He was a major influence behind the creation of the Oakland County Children’s Village and a co-founder of Camp Oakland, a camp for underprivileged children. He served on the President’s Council on Juvenile Justice, and helped create the Michigan Children’s Charter.
Mr. Hunt served in the Navy on the battleship U.S.S. Colorado.
His wife, Eva E. Hunt, preceded him in death. He is survived by his children, Frances H. Hunt, Jeanne M. Hunt, Roberta A. Cox; his son-in-law John Cox; James M. Hunt; his daughter-in-law, Caroline J. Hunt; grandchildren, John E. Cox Jr., James M. Cox, Douglas J. Hunt, Elizabeth K. Hunt, Terri Lumbard and Angie Ade; seven great grandchildren; and brothers, Andrew Hunt and Richard Hunt.

Virginia Dawkins Fishel
Born in Columbia, S.C. on Aug. 6, 1920

Virginia Dawkins Fishel, age 82, passed away December 10, 2002. Virginia spent her life first as a devoted mother and wife of a career Air Force officer and secondly as a schoolteacher in Charleston, South Carolina and San Antonio, Texas. She attended public schools in Columbia, SC and graduated from Columbia College. Her daughter, Virginia Lynn, preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Col. Martin D. Fishel Jr., along with her children Martin D. Fishel III, and Rita M. Stroud, grandchildren James S. Stroud, and Daniel L. Stroud, and sons-in-law Dwight S. Stroud and Gary M. Strickland. There will be visitation at Porter Loring Mortuary from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Thursday, December 12, 2002. Burial will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Columbia, SC. The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Saint Luke’s Baptist Hospital and Regent Care Center for their loving care and attention during her illness. Memorial contributions may be made to the American cancer Society or the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation.

Elsie Mary Bienek

Elsie Mary Bienek, loving wife, mother and grandmother passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 7, 2002 at the age of 84. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Clement and her brother, Frank Kovalski, Jr. Elsie was born on January 5, 1918 in San Antonio, TX. She was a devote Catholic, who prayed her Rosary daily and gave this example to her family. Her family was always her first priority. It was her family that gave her the greatest happiness in her life. Her pride and joy were her grandsons, Jason and Christopher and she called them the “light of her life”. She was the heart of our family and she will be greatly missed. She is survived by her loving daughters, M. Joyce Sulaica and her husband, Jerry and Sherilyn Vogel and her husband, Bill. She is also survived by her loving grandchildren, Jason Vogel and Christopher Sulaica, as well as her cousin and friend, Helen Zaiontz. Visitation will be Tuesday from 7 o’clock until 8 o’clock at Porter Loring on McCullough.
