Mrs. Zschiesche

Amanda Ottilie Zschiesche, 100, died Jan. 22, 2005 at Hamilton. Funeral services were held Jan. 25 at St. John Lutheran Church in Hamilton with Pastor Russell Nebhut and Vicar Robert Reibau officiating. Burial followed in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery at Pottsville.
Mrs. Zschiesche was born on July 11, 1904, the daughter of August and Emilie (Schrank) Gromatzky in Aleman. She was one of eight children born to the Gromatzky family.
Mrs. Zschiesche was baptized on August 7, 1904 at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Aleman by Pastor D. E. Schwecke. The family were faithful members of the Lutheran Church where Mrs. Zschiesche grew up attending Sunday School and worship each week.
Mrs. Zschiesche loved music, which was evident to all who knew her, and when she was eleven years old her church was in need of an organist. Mrs. Zschiesche's pastor taught her how to play the organ, and for approximately fifty years she led the people of God in worship through the gift of music He had given to her.
Mrs. Zschiesche attended Clifton Jr. College and then taught school in Lyons until she married Herbert Zschiesche on Dec. 7, 1922.
The couple stood before the altar of Immanuel Lutheran where Pastor J. T. Schmidt pronounced them to be husband and wife. The young couple was blessed with six children who learned quickly the value of hard work as they grew up on the family farm in Pottsville.
Tragedy struck the young family on April 20, 1940 when Herbert was taken from Mrs. Zschiesche after eighteen years of marriage. As a young widow with six children Mrs. Zschiesche struggled to provide for her family. When she was in the midst of great trial, she read a passage of scripture which would sustain her for the rest of her life. "Cast all your cares upon the Lord, for He cares for you." These words helped Mrs. Zschiesche to see her Lord was always with her, ready and willing to sustain her through the difficult days she faced.
Mrs. Zschiesche was blessed by God to use her many gifts to be a blessing to so many. She served her Lord many years as organist and choir director, Sunday school teacher, as a member of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League, and by her faithful support of her church throughout her life. Among her many gifts was her ability to quilt. Over the years she provided countless gifts for Lutheran World Relief as well as providing gifts of quilts to her family and friends. Even at the age of one hundred she still quilted and baked every day. A birthday hardly ever passed without a gift of her famous sugar cookies or a loaf of freshly baked bread.
Long life has many blessings, but also many hardships. Mrs. Zschiesche faced the trial of losing her parents and all her siblings. She also grieved as only a mother can when she lost two of her children. In addition to this she survived the Great Depression, a tornado which destroyed the family farm, and in 1986 while returning with other ladies from an LWML rally the group suffered a major car wreck. Mrs. Zschiesche was thrown from the car, suffering a broken neck and many other injuries. It seemed she might not survive, but even in the hospital she spoke with confidence of getting better.
Each step along the way she found her Lord present in His Word to comfort her with His hope and His promises. Even during the most difficult times of her life she spoke with confidence of God's love and she knew He would take care of her.
Mrs. Zschiesche was blessed to live in her own home for more than one hundred years. The last few weeks were difficult for her. An accident resulted in a fracture in her back which kept her from walking. Confined to a bed and unable to put her gifts to use as she had in the past, she continued to speak words of hope to those who came to visit her.
She spoke with confidence of God's blessings each day and of her confidence of going to heaven. Saturday morning God answered her prayer and the prayers of her family. The pain and suffering ended as Jesus received her into eternity. It is with joy and thanksgiving we celebrate her life today - the life of a sainted child of God.
Mrs. Zschiesche is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her four brothers and three sisters, two sons Milford Zschiesche and Carroll Zschiesche; two daughters-in-law, Helen Zschiesche and Ruth Zschiesche; one son-in-law, Wally Hobratsch; and one grandson, Cliff Zschiesche.
She is survived by four of her children: Alice Hobratsch of Dallas, Ollie Zschiesche of Hamilton, Frances Farley and husband Robert of Austin and Evelyn Olsen and husband Cliff of Georgetown.
Granny Zschiesche, as she was fondly known by all, is also survived by twelve grandchildren, twenty-six great-grandchildren, and a host of extended family.
Pallbearers were Mrs. Zschiesche's Grandsons: James Zschiesche, Dr. Jerry Zschiesche, David Zschiesche, Herbert Zschiesche, Wilbert Zschiesche, Mark Olsen, Rev. Dale Farley.
