Sarah Emery
Sarah Martha Watson Emery, 89, of Denton died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at Select Services Hospital of RHD Memorial Medical Center in Dallas.
She was born Aug. 8, 1911, in Guernsey County, Ohio, to William James and Daisy Odessa (Taylor) Watson. She married Stephen A. Emery in Boston, Mass., on Sept. 11, 1948. He died in 1991.
Mrs. Emery attended Agnes Scott College and Emory University, where she received an A.B. degree. She received an M.A. and a Ph.D. in philosophy from Ohio State University.
She taught at the the University of Illinois, the junior college of Packer Collegiate Institute, Syracuse University, Hollins College, Duke University, Cooke County Junior College and the University of Plano.
She was the author of several published works including plays, poetry, children's stories, and articles. She also co-edited two booksof collected writings by Denton senior citizens. She taught a creative writing class at the Denton Senior Center and was a member of the American Philosophical Association, the Poetry Society of Texas and Phi Beta Kappa.
She attended Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Denton.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, in the chapel of Mulkey-Mason, Jack Schmitz and Son Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Habitat for Humanity of Denton.
Survivors include two sons, Stephen Emery of Denton and John Emery of Ardmore, Okla.; one sister, Jeraldine Charles of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Jimmie Hawthorne
Gainesville - Jimmie Hawthorne, 76, of Gainesville died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at Denton Community Hospital.
He was born Feb. 27., 1925, in Greenville to William E. and Lillie M. (Phillips) Hawthorne. He married Mary Gertrude Alexander in Weatherford on April 28, 1946. She died Dec. 27, 1998.
Mr. Hawthorne was a retired superintendent for Jagoe Public Co. He served with the 385th Air Service Group in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and he was a Mason.
A service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, at the First Baptist Church in Roanoke. The Rev. Johnny Reed will officiate. Burial will be in Medlin Cemetery in Trophy Club.
Pallbearers will be Berry Weolzen, David Frazier, Michael Frazier, Jeff Phillips, Michael Phillips and Russell Phillips.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today, June 18, at Mulkey-Mason, Jack Schmitz and Son Funeral Home.
Survivors include one son, Andy Hawthorne of Gainesville; one daughter, Jo Lynn Horn of Roanoke; one brother, Gary Phillips of Sanger; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Christeen Jenkins, who died in February
Ava Krauss
Ava Ruth Krauss, 69, of Denton died Sunday, June 17, 2001, in Anna.
She was born Nov. 3, 1931, in Moscow, Tenn., to Herman D. and Zena Mae Simmons.
A service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 19, in the chapel of DeBerry Funeral Directors. The Rev. John Conner will officiate. Burial will follow in Roselawn Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be David, Mark, Phillip and Tim Krauss; Brooke Hendricks; and Donny Winn.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. today, June 18, at the funeral home.
Survivors include three daughters, Pamela Drury of Plano, Judy Hendricks of Anna, and Sharon Winn of Colleyville; four sons, Davis and Phillip Krauss of Denton, Mark Krauss of Houston, and Timothy Krauss of Plano.
Loyd Long
Comanche - Loyd Edgar Long, 81, of Comanche died Saturday, June 16, 2001, in a Comanche hospital.
He was born April 3, 1920, in Chico to Ernest Edgar and Ina Holt Long.
Mr. Long was a retired farmer.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, in the Eakin Cemetery in Ponder. The Rev. Kim Broadstreet will officiate. DeBerry Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include two sisters, Ruby Nell Wortman and Evelyn Stack, both of Ponder; and two brothers, Doyle Long and Travis Long, also both of Ponder.
Mary Jo Nelson
Grapevine - Mary Jo Nelson, 78, of Grapevine, formerly of Lewisville, died June 16, 2001.
Ms. Nelson was a native of Denton and a retired PBX operator for Texas Instruments.
Survivors include two nephews, Jimmie Cogdell of Freeport and Jack Hays of West Columbia; and one niece, Carole Ann Norris of Fort Worth.
A service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 20, at Dalton and Son Funeral Home in Lewisville. Dr. Ben Smith will officiate. Burial will follow in Old Hall Cemetery in Lewisville.
Charles Wright
Charles Anthony Wright, 41, of Denton died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at his home.
He was born April 17, 1960, in Jackson, Miss. On Oct. 23, 1980, he married Teresa Osburn in Carrollton.
Mr. Wright was a house painter.
He was Baptist.
A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 20, at Roselawn Memorial Park.
The family will be at Goen-Hudgens Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. tonight, Tuesday, June 19, for visitation.
Survivors include his wife of Denton; two sons, Charles and Christopher Wright of Denton; one daughter, Pricilla Wright of Denton; and two sisters, Rhonda Boone of Texas City and Cindy Boone of Fort Worth.
Lawrence Hassenpflug
Sanger - Lawrence A. Hassenpflug, 81, of Sanger died Monday, June 18, 2001, at his home.
He was born June 16, 1920, in Cooke County.
Mr. Hassenpflug was a farmer and a U.S. Army veteran.
The service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 21, at Bolivar Baptist Church. The Revs. Dickie Amyx and Robert Gill will officiate. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery.
The family will be at Coker Funeral Home of Sanger from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 20, for visitation.
Memorials may be made to the Bolivar Baptist Church Building Fund.
Survivors include his wife, Thelma Hassenpflug of Sanger; one stepdaughter, Malinda Amyx of Sanger; two stepsons, Randy Legear of Sanger and Sam Legear of Denton; one sister, Beatrice Jones of Sanger; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Mack D. Hewitt, 80, of Denton, died Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at Kern Manor in Pilot Point.

Andrew Shersen
Andrew J. Shersen, 17, of Lewisville passed away Friday, June 15, 2001, in Lewisville. He was born January 23, 1984, in Denton. He is survived by his mother Charlotte Shersen; brother Johnny Shersen; grandmother, Blanche Shersen; uncle, David Shersen; and relatives in Austin - the Bever family. He is preceded in death by his father, John Shersen. Visitation will be Wednesday, June 20, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Dalton and Son Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Thursday, June 21, at Dalton and Son Funeral Home.
Joan Bidne
Joan Bidne, 51, of Hickory Creek died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at her home.
She was born Feb. 19, 1950, in Corpus Christi to Albert and Mabel (Elam) Barth. She received bachelor's and master's degrees from Baylor University in Waco.
Ms. Bidne was a physical education teacher at Newton Rayzor Elementary and previously was summer summits coordinator and a SPAN driver and coordinator.
She was a member of the Harvest Metropolitan Community Church where she was a pitcher for the church softball team, ministry leader, chime choir member and creator of the church prayer trail.
A memorial service will be at 8 a.m. Sunday, June 24, on the prayer trail that will be dedicated as the Joan Bidne Memorial Prayer Trail. The Rev. Tina Wynn will officiate.
