Ricky Lee Higgs

Memorial services for Ricky Lee Higgs, 47, of Denton will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, at Denton Baptist Temple in Denton.

Survivors include one son, Keith Higgs of Denton; one daughter, Amy Payne of Denton; two brothers, James Howard Higgs of Gordonville and Jerry Don Higgs of Dallas; and five sisters, Jo Nell Sells, Sherry Sprabary, and Judy Stone, all of Denton, Anita Mays of Aubrey and Kathy Fanning of Boyd.

Edward Blondell

Bowie – Edward "Sonny" Blondell III, 68, of Bowie died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, at a local hospital.

He was born July 21, 1938, in Los Angeles, Calif., to Edward Jr. and Eloise Stovall Blondell. On April 13, 1954, he married Patsy Sharber in Denton.

Mr. Blondell was a charter member of the Texas Boys Choir, a member of the University of North Texas Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity, elder and choir director of First Presbyterian Church in Mineral Wells, a Carnegie Medal of Honor recipient, a member of the Boys Club of America, United Way chairman, Pop Wagner and Little League coach, and U.S. Air Force member and flight commander "Southern Airways" of Texas.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Bowie.

The service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at the First United Methodist Church in Mineral Wells. The Rev. Gayle Zoya and Dr. Georgia Adamson will officiate. Burial will be at Woodland Park Cemetery in Mineral Wells.

Pallbearers will be Robert Murray, Willy Clemmer, Roque Williams, Randy Bryer, Jeff Smith, Dick Reed, and Mike Hermanson.

The family will be at Baum Carlock BumGardner Funeral Home from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, for visitation.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society and the First Presbyterian Church in Bowie.

Survivors include his wife, Patsy Blondell of Bowie; his mother, Eloise Blondell of Denton; one son, Steve Blondell of Willow Park; two daughters, Karen Jarrett and Linda Porter Bradford, both of Mineral Wells; one sister, Kathryn Blondell of Pacific Palisades; and nine grandchildren.

Michelle Prator

Aubrey – Michelle Prator, 10, of Aubrey died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001, in Children’s Hospital in Dallas.

She was born on July 29, 1991, to Lonnie Ray and Gaylan Prator in Fort Worth.

Miss Prator was a student at Aubrey Elementary School.

The service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, at the New Hope Baptist Church in Aubrey.

The Rev. Elmer Cummings will officiate. Burial will be at the Oakwood Cemetery in Whitesboro. DeBerry Funeral Directors is in charge of ar-rangements.

Pallbearers will be Brady Rushing, Shane Carroll, Robert Robinson, and Bradley Byrd.

Survivors include her parents, Lonnie and Gaylan Prator of Aubrey; one brother, Justin Prator of Aubrey; and her grandparents, Margaret Prator of Aubrey, Sam and Loretta Byrd of Vernon and Mike and Jane Daniels of Waxahachie.

Charles C. Calhoun

Charles Curtis Calhoun passed away Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001. He was born Nov. 9, 1945, in Dallas, Texas. He attended R.L. Turner High School and graduated in 1964. He resided in Aubrey for the past 25 years. Charles retired as captain from the Carrollton Fire Department on Dec. 31, 1992.

He had a love for gardening, horses and longhorn cattle. He will always be remembered for his caring of others and for his fighting spirit.

He is survived by his daughters, Dondria Hampton of Flower Mound, Annleia Briley and husband Pat of Denton and Merisha Calhoun of Aubrey; brother, Marvin Calhoun and wife Louise of Trenton; sister, Lillian Warren of Kaufman; two grandchildren, Taylor Irick and Taryn Hampton; aunts, Mary Cole and Jane Newland of Stigler, Okla.; and numerous special nieces, nephews, cousins and loved ones.

Special thanks to all the nurses who cared for him throughout the years.

Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, at Rhoton Funeral Home in Carrollton.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, at the First Baptist Church in Aubrey, Texas, with burial to follow at Belew Cemetery.

Erica N. Tanski

Erica Nicolle Tanski, formerly known as Teresa Louise McCann, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, after fighting against cancer. A lover of life, she actively brought life into the world, delivering newborns as an apprentice midwife and dula. She brought eight children of her own into the world. Active in the Catholic Church and in social issues, she was instrumental in raising the age of consent to 18 in the State of Washington. She was a beacon of light for many who knew her and will be sorely missed by her family and friends.

She was born May 10, 1957, in Nuremberg, Germany, to Wayne McCann and Dorothy Lorraine Graves McCann. Erica attended Manhattan School of Nursing and was active in Project Gabriel, assisting unwed mothers and children and Diodesan Synod. She married Alexander C. Tanski on Jan. 3, 1988, in Lemon Grove, Calif. She was a member of the St. Mark Catholic Church.

Inurnment services will be at the Dallas/Fort Worth National Cemetery at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7, with a Rosary service at 2:30 p.m. at the St. Mark Catholic Church with a Memorial Mass to follow at 3 p.m. with Father Gene Sweeney officiating.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to Project Gabriel, 2800 Pennsylvania, Denton, Texas 76205.

She is survived by her husband, Alexander C. Tanski of Krum; six daughters, Kyla Alexis Tanski, Alexia Dominique Tanski, Ariel Kathryn Tanski, Cara Angelique Tanski of Krum, Angelique Juverna Swartz of Argyle, Tamy Maxine Liles of Wichita, Kan.; two sons, Gearith Riley Tanski of Krum, Jean Luc Genesis of Fort Lee, Va.; her parents, Dorothy Vehrs of Kingston, Wash., and Wayne McCann of Port Orchard, Wash.; grandmother, Maxine Graves of Bremerton, Wash.; sister, Ladawn Jasper of Kinston, Wash.; two brothers, Terry McCann of Gig Harbor, Wash., and Paul McCann of Bremerton, Wash.

Special thanks to the nursing staff in Denton Regional Medical Center that provided the most considerate, loving care for her during this trial against cancer.

DeBerry Funeral Directors are in charge of arrangements.

Grady W. Daws Jr.

Grady W. Daws Jr., 83, of Denton died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001, at Denton Community Hospital.

He was born November 12, 1917, in Throckmorton, to Grady W. and Margaret Daws.

Mr. Daws graduated from the Shriner Institute and the University of North Texas. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the South Pacific, and received six Bronze Stars. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service, where he was a letter carrier and a clerk in the Denton office. He was a member of the Denton Elks Lodge, V.F.W. and D.A.V.

He was a member of the Presbyterian Church.

The service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7, at the chapel of DeBerry Funeral Directors. The Rev. John Stout will officiate. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7, at Throckmorton Cemetery in Throckmorton.

DeBerry Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Denton Elks Lodge.

Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Webb of Sulphur Springs and Martha Lawson and husband, John, of St. Louis, Mo.; one son, Robert Daws and wife, Tamora, of Rio Rancho, N.M.; five grandchildren, Cheryl Goin, Giles Goin Jr., Cristina Webb, Rob Daws and Elizabeth Daws; and four great-grandchildren, Lindsay, MacKenzie, Garrett, and Colt.

L.J. Burdine

L.J. Burdine, 84, of Denton passed away after battling leukemia Tuesday morning, Sept. 4, 2001, at the Denton Regional Medical Center. L.J. was a devoted father and husband and will be dearly missed by his family and friends, but is now entrusted into God’s hands. He was born August 13, 1917, in Colorado City, Texas, to Leslie and Elizabeth Burdine.

He served in the U.S. Army during Would War II. L.J. married Joan Preston on Oct. 15, 1987 in Denton. Prior to his marriage to Joan he was married to Opal Ruth Burdine for 47 years who preceded him in death.

L.J. was a member of the First Baptist Church of Denton and was active with Meals on Wheels until the age of 82. Before his retirement he was the vice-president and general manager of the Bigham Brothers Manufacturer of Agricultural Implements.

Funeral Services were at 10:00 a.m. today, Thursday at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Cliff Feeler officiating with burial at the Loraine Cemetery in Loraine, Texas.

He is survived by: his wife, Joan Burdine of Denton; son: James Burdine and wife Sparkle of Dallas; two stepsons: Mike Preston and wife Shirley of Denton and Joe Preston and wife Dee of San Diego, Calif.; two grandchildren: Jimmy and Holly Burdine; and three step Grandchildren: Jason Mann, Terie Weaver, and Bill Moore

Other close family members include: Wennola Battle, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Battle and Courtney Battle, Robert Battle and Tamra Rogers all of Austin, Texas.

DeBerry Funeral Directors is in charge of the arrangements.

C.W. Roan

C.W. Roan, 80, of Denton died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, at the Care Inn in Sanger.

He was born Sept. 26, 1920, in Ridgeway to John Franklin and Myrtle Grace Ratcliff Roan. He attended Branham public schools and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. On April 8, 1950, he married Jeanetta Parker Cotton in Dallas. She died Aug. 29, 2000.

Mr. Roan was employed in the maintenance department at Texas Woman’s University at the time of his retirement.

He was a member of Farmers Branch Church of Christ.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at Restland Memorial Park in Dallas. Eddy Ketchersid will officiate.

The family will be at DeBerry Funeral Directors of Denton from 7 to 8 p.m. today, Friday, Sept. 7, for visitation.

Memorials may be made to the National Alzheimer’s Association, National Head-quarters, 919 N. Michigan Ave., Suite 1100, Chicago, Ill. 60611.

Survivors include three sons, Jerry Don Roan of Pearl, Miss., Clarence Windel Roan Jr. of Palestine, and Terry Wayne Roan of Denton; one sister, Bernice Mize of Cumby; one brother, Gene Roan of Cooper; and seven grandchildren.

Viola Compton

Lewisville – Viola Compton, 77, of Lewisville died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001, at Medical Center of Lewisville.

She was born Sept 16, 1923, in Lewisville to Louis and Annie Tieman Boenker. On Oct. 30, 1948, she married Harold L. Compton Sr. in Dallas.

Mrs. Compton was baptized and confirmed at Round Grove United Church of Christ, where she was a member for many years. She did volunteer work for Christian Community Action.

The service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at Round Grove United Church of Christ. Interment will follow at Round Grove Cemetery. Dr. Bryon S. Wells and Thomas Duffey will officiate.

The family will be at Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home in Lewisville from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today, Friday, Sept. 7, for visitation.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Survivors include her husband, Harold L. Compton of Lewisville; one son, H.L. Compton Jr. of Bonham; two daughters, Judy Belcher of Sanger and Beverly Edwards of Lewisville; one sister, Velma Barfknecht of Lewisville; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by numerous brothers and sisters.

Pearl Warner

Decatur – Pearl Warner, 95, of Decatur died Thursday, Sept. 6, 2001 in Decatur.

She was born Oct. 8, 1905, in Sayre, Okla. In 1926, she married Curtis L. Warner in Clovis, N.M. Her husband preceded her in death.

Mrs. Warner was a member of the Decatur Church of Christ.

The service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Decatur Church of Christ. Robert Isham and Ryan Morrison will officiate. Burial will be at Cresson Cemetery in Granbury.

The family will be at Coker Funeral Home in Decatur from 6 to 7:30 p.m. today, Friday, Sept. 7, for visitation.

Survivors include two sons, Bob Warner of Turkey, Texas, and Ed Warner of Davis, Okla.; two daughters, Wanda Harp of Decatur and Mary Basgall of Topeka, Kan.; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Tom Mitchell Epting

Tom Mitchell Epting, age 73, went to live with the Lord on Sept. 5, 2001. He was born to Roy R. and Dove Epting on Aug. 1, 1928, in Celina, Texas, and raised by Rev. W.J. and Alma Epting. He married his one time love, Lois O. Hutchinson, on Jan. 14, 1949. They moved to Denton in 1953.

In 1959 he went to work for Allstate Insurance Co., where he retired on Feb. 12, 1990, to enjoy his wife and family. During his career with Allstate, he won the company award of Honor Ring 18 times, and the National Champions Award 14 times.

Tom enjoyed people and knew no stranger. He was very active in many civic organizations. He was president of Denton Jr. Chamber of Commerce, state VP of Denton Jaycees, president of the Denton Life Underwrit-ers Club, Deacon at Cooper Creek Baptist Church, Chairman of the Deacons at Denton Baptist Temple, Boy Scout Troup Leader and member of the Order of the Arrow.

Tom is survived by his wife of over 52 years, Lois Epting of Denton; five sons, David Cox, Thomas M. Epting, Timothy M. Epting, Don M. Epting, and Tracy M. Epting, all of Denton; two daughters, Jackie C. Epting and Tammy L. Eppler, both of Denton; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at DeBerry Funeral Home Friday, Sept. 7. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 8, at the funeral home. The Rev. Gary C. Smith will officiate. The eulogy will be given by Bill Doranski, longtime partner of Mr. Epting.

Pallbearers will be Tom Leland Epting, Mitch Davis, Joe Coffey, Travis Hood, Bobby Hutchinson and Kenny Hutchinson. Mitchell Epting and Dustin Epting will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Marion Roney

Marion Roney, 82, of Denton died Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001, at Denton Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.

Mrs. Roney was born Nov. 17, 1918, in Parson, Kan., to Victor and Mary Luella (Grillot) Vogel.

After graduating from high school, she worked on the family farm until World War II, when she went to work in a defense plant in Kansas City. There, she met her husband, William B. Roney, and married him in 1949. Mr. Roney died in 1972.

Mrs. Roney was a retired homemaker and a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Monsignor Charles King will officiate. A memorial Mass will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 11, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Parson, Kan. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Parson.

The family will be at the chapel of Goen-Hudgens Funeral Home in Denton at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept 9, for visitation. A rosary will be said at 8 p.m.

Memorials may be made to the Immaculate Conception School, Vogel Endowment Fund or the United Commercial Travels Charities Fund.

Survivors include one brother, Bill Vogel of Denton, and one sister, Therese Ruffatto of Santa Rosa, Calif.
