Nov. 24, 1911 — June 7, 2000

CENTERVILLE — Services for Lee Opal Oden, 88, of Leona are set for 10 a.m. Saturday in the Leona Methodist Church in Leona.

The Revs. Ernest Carl Phifer and Brooks Taylor will officiate. Burial will be in the Leona Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at Walters Funeral Home in Centerville.

Mrs. Oden died Wednesday in Madison St. Joseph Health Center in Madisonville.
She was a lifelong resident of Leona and was a member of the Leona Methodist Church.

She and her husband owned and operated the E.F. Oden Cotton Gin in Leona for many years. She was a member of the Leona FCE and helped take care of and helped with the reorganization of the Leona Cemetery.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Lloyd Oden.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Jennie Marie and Max Haston of Leona and Marilyn Lloyd Oden and Robert Maddux of Houston; a sister, Corine Lorenz of Pasadena, Texas; a brother-in-law, Wallace Donelson of Baytown, Texas; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Albert Gomez
Feb. 25, 1962 — June 4, 2000

ROCKDALE — Services for Albert Gomez, 38, of Rockdale are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale.

The Rev. Elmo Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Lawn Cemetery.
Mr. Gomez died Sunday in Cameron.

He was born in Mexico, had lived in Rockdale for six years and formerly lived in Bartlett, Texas. He was a groomer for Valhalla Farms in Rockdale.

Survivors include four sisters in Mexico.

Leroy Baker
Jan. 17, 1960 — June 6, 2000

NAVASOTA — Services for Leroy Baker, 40, of Houston are set for 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Navasota.

The Rev. James Lee will officiate. Burial will be in Little Flock Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Jones Funeral Home in Navasota.

Mr. Baker died Tuesday in Northway Nursing Home in Houston.

He was born in Grimes County and was a laborer. He was a member of the Greater Truevine Baptist Church in Houston.

Survivors include two sons, De Monte Baker and De Marde Baker, both of Houston; a brother, Robert Baker of Missouri City, Texas; six sisters, Lucy Boston, Sammie Baker, Annie Hubert, Bernice Baker, Celetha Baker Noble and Thelma Baker, all of Houston; and his father, Howard Baker of Houston.

Martha Evans
June 10, 1894 — June 3, 2000

NAVASOTA — Services for Martha Evans, 105, of Richards are set for 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Richards.

The Rev. Davis will officiate. Burial will be in Long Street Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at Jones Funeral Home in Navasota.
Mrs. Evans died Saturday in Grimes St. Joseph Health Center in Navasota.

She was born in Grimes County and was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Richards.

Survivors include two nieces; Leola Clary and Lois J. Blackmond; and a nephew, Leroy Harris.

Ivy ‘Shorty’ Alwell
July 26, 1913 — June 7, 2000

NAVASOTA — Services for Ivy “Shorty” Alwell, 86, of Navasota are set for 10 a.m. Monday at Nobles Funeral Chapel in Navasota.

Mr. Dale Evans of the United Pentecostal Church will officiate. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mr. Alwell died Wednesday in Navasota.

He was born in Larto, La., and was a retired chemical engineer with the International Paper Company. He was a Pentecostal.

Survivors include his wife, Nettie Mae Alwell of Navasota ; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Wallace and Joyce Alwell of Bryan, Albert and Debra Alwell and Samuel Alwell, all of Navasota, and Charles and Pam Alwell of DeRidder, La.; two stepsons, Dickie Sisco of Chicago, Ill., and Jerry Sisco of Navasota; three daughters and sons-in-law, Marylynn and Ron Lee of Ohio, Dorothy and Robert Ripkoski of Navasota and Rachel and Ross Walker of DeRidder, La.; four stepdaughters, Diana Sisco of Tomball, Texas, Carrie Vega and husband, Pete, of Navasota, Janet Leatherwood of Magnolia, Texas, and Linda Sisco of Bryan; a brother- and sister-in-law, Albert and Barbara Alwell of Deville, La.; a sister and brother-in-law, Dora Mae and Horace Charries of New Orleans; 36 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Raymond August Jaster
March 10, 1922 — June 8, 2000

BURTON — Services for Raymond August Jaster, 78, of Burton are set for 10 a.m. Monday at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Burton.

Pastor Glen Schoeneberg will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery .

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday in Foehner Funeral Home in Burton.

Mr. Jaster died Thursday in Trinity Medical Center in Brenham.

He was born in Burton and had lived in the La Bahia community since 1961. He was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, where he served on the council. He was a farmer and raised livestock.

Survivors include his wife, Lydia Jaster of Burton; a son- and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Pat Jaster of Brenham; a daughter, Betty Sidenstricker of Pearland, Texas; a sister, Lorena Stolz of Burton; two sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Emma Draeger and Gus and Helen Draeger, all of Brenham; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to St. John’s United Church of Christ in Burton.

Monnie Bell Thompson
Aug. 16, 1913 — June 5, 2000

Services for Monnie Bell Thompson, 87, of College Station are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at College Hills Missionary Baptist Church in College Station.

The Rev. Steven Sims of College Hills Missionary Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Roans Chapel Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Peoples Mortuary in Bryan.

Mrs. Thompson died Monday in a College Station nursing home.

She was born in Grimes County and was a lifelong resident of College Station.

She was retired and was a member of the College Hills Missionary Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ebbie Thompson.

Survivors include a son, James Colford of College Station; a sister, Susie Prather of Washington; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Kenneth Howard Truitt
May 5, 1924 — June 7, 2000

NORTH CAPE MAY, N.J. — Memorial services for Kenneth Howard Truitt, 76, of Villas, N.J., will be held at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of Evoy Funeral Homes in North Cape May, N.J.

Mr. Truitt died Wednesday at his home.

He was born in Dallas and had lived in New Jersey for three years. He formerly lived in Houston and College Station. He was a retired Master Sergeant, serving 21 years in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include a daughter, Jennifer Jacobs of Villas, N.J.; three sons, Kenneth H. Truitt Jr. and Daniel Truitt, both of Houston, and Mark Truitt of Richmond, Va.; and three grandchildren.

Ruby Fannie Noack Whiteley
Jan. 13, 1913 — June 8, 2000

ROCKDALE — Graveside services for Ruby Fannie Noack Whiteley, 87, of Lexington are set for 11 a.m. Saturday in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Rockdale.

The Rev. Jim Platt will officiate.

Arrangements are under the direction of Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale.

Mrs. Whiteley died Thursday in the Country Care Plex Nursing Home in Giddings, Texas.

She was born in Rockdale and had lived in Lexington since 1972. She was a homemaker and had worked for Texaco in accounting in Houston and as a bookkeeper for Mr. Camp and for the E.H. Noack grocery store in Rockdale.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Whiteley.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Marvin Earl and Laura Whiteley of Lake Conroe, Texas; two daughters, Alice Udine Henson and Texey Lou Caldwell, both of Lexington; three sisters, Emma Von Gonten, Pearl Holley and Della May Keen, all of Rockdale; a half-sister, Helen Perry of Rockdale; a half-brother, Leon Noack of Rockdale; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Joe Buser
died June 8, 2000

Memorial services for Joe Buser, 62, of College Station are set for 1:30 p.m. Sunday at A&M Church of Christ in College Station.

Mr. Buser died Thursday.

He was a 1959 graduate of Texas A&M University and was a special assistant to Earl Rudder when Rudder was president of Texas A&M. He served in the U.S. Air Force as an Armed Forces Radio and Television officer and attained the rank of captain. He worked for several Texas newspapers before becoming an advertising and public relations consultant.

He was a member of A&M United Church of Christ, where he co-taught the 4s Sunday school class and presented workshops on teaching techniques. His stories about his encounters with God were published in Christian magazines and he won several awards for writing and production. He was a member of numerous professional organizations and was a founder of the Texas Aggie Band Association, was past president of the Brazos County A&M Club, was a former Jaycee director and was involved in many B-CS civic and charitable organizations.

Survivors include a sister, Ann Heape of Arlington, Texas; a brother, Sam Buser of Houston; a son, Joe Buser Jr. of Dallas; and a daughter, Jennifer Buser of Austin.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Memorial Library Fund of the A&M Church of Christ, 1001 F.M. 2818 E., College Station, Texas 77840 or to The American Cancer Society.

Mary Kronenberger
Jan. 10, 1917 — June 8, 2000

BREMOND — Services for Mary Kronenberger, 83, of Bremond are set for 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bremond.

The Rev. Louis Wozniak of Georgetown, Texas, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Mausoleum.

Visitation will be at Bremond Funeral Home from 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. until service time Monday. A rosary service will be Sunday at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mrs. Kronenberger died Thursday at Falls Community Hospital in Marlin, Texas.
She was born in Bremond and was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and St. Mary’s Alter Society and Rosary Service.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Kronenberger.

Survivors include one daughter, Margie Hunt of Houston; and one sister, Annie Homiak of Bremond.

Dennis James Roberson
May 2, 1955 — June 7, 2000

TEMPLE, Texas — Services for Dennis James Roberson, 45, of Somerville are set for 11 a.m. Tuesday at Smith Chapel A.M.E. Church in Somerville.

The Rev. Eddie Everline Jr. of St. James A.M.E. Church in Fort Worth will officiate. Burial will be in Lyons Community Cemetery in Lyons, Texas.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 9 a.m. until service time at Smith Chapel A.M.E. Church in Somerville.

Mr. Roberson died Wednesday in Temple.

He was born in Lyons. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was a disabled veteran. He was a member of Smith Chapel A.M.E. Church.

Survivors include his mother, Mildred A. Roberson of Somerville; two brothers, Curtis Colbert of Brenham and Garry Roberson of Fort Worth; and five sisters, Faye Powell, Gloria Everline, Patricia Ray and Charlotte Roberson, all of Brenham, and Marion Hogues of Somerville.

Arrangements are under the direction of Branford/Dawson Funeral Home in Temple.
