Ollie Brazil Sanders
Feb. 7, 1940 — Jan. 25, 2001

DENTON, Texas — Services for Ollie Brazil Sanders, 60, of College Station are set for 11 a.m. Monday in the Chapel of Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home in Denton.

The Rev. Bill Black will officiate. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mr. Sanders died Thursday at his home.

He was born in Haskell, Texas, and formerly lived in Denton. He was a member of The Four Square Church and was retired from Moore’s Business Forms Corp., where he was a Quality Facilitator.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cathleen S. Taylor.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon Sanders of College Station; a daughter, Kristi Ouaida Jimerson of College Station; two sons, Phillip Wayne Sanders of Krum, Texas, and Terry Scott Sanders of Milan, Italy; a sister, Trovette Hodges of Sherman, Texas; and five grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Brazos Valley.

Ella Werchan
March 1, 1905 — Jan. 24, 2001

BRENHAM — Services for Ella Werchan, 95, of Brenham are set for 2 p.m. Saturday in St. Peter’s Lutheran Church of Gay Hill.

The Rev. Virgil Pecht will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery .

Arrangements are under the direction of Memorial Oaks Chapel in Brenham.

Mrs. Werchan died Wednesday in Trinity Medical Center in Brenham.

She was born in Cedar Hill and was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church of Gay Hill. She owned a general store and was postmaster at Gay Hill after the death of her husband and until her retirement in 1975.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Werchan, and a son, Walter Werchan Jr.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Clarice and Edgar Kramer of Brenham and June Thurber Cox and Dennis Cox of Palo Alto, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church of Gay Hill.

L.J. Younts
Sept. 16, 1930 — Jan. 25, 2001

BEDIAS — Services for L.J. Younts, 70, of Madisonville are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Shiloh Baptist Church in the Pankey community.

Bros. James Richie and Dewitt Rowe of Shiloh Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Pankey Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Bedias.

Mr. Younts died Thursday.

He was born in Temple and served in the U.S. Army. He was retired after 35 years with the Texas Department of Transportation. He was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church, where he was a deacon.

Survivors include his wife, Donnie Yeager Younts of Madisonville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kimberly Ann and Bryan McCoy of Huntsville and JoBeth and Dennis Coleman of Willis, Texas; a sister, Annie Beutler of Temple; two brothers, Curtis Younts of Belton, Texas, and Donald Younts of Dawson, Texas; and five grandchildren.

Irma Hinds Laws
October 21, 1910 — January 26, 2001

Irma Hinds Laws died January 26, 2001 at her home in Bedias, Texas. Mrs. Irma was born Oct. 21, 1910, the first born of six children of William Melville Hinds and Levenia Ellen Williams Hinds, at Richards, Texas, Grimes County.

She finished the Richards school in 1927, then went to Draughon’s Business College in Houston, Texas. On June 27, 1928, at age 17, she went to work as bookkeeper for B.A. Killson & Co. located at 513 Cotton Exchange Building, Houston, Texas. On March 9, 1930 she and Ted Omer Laws were married in Vinton, Louisiana. Ted Omer Laws Jr., their only child, was born September 11, 1932.

On January 3, 1967 Irma retired from bookkeeping and spent her remaining years as loving wife and mother on their cattle ranch at Bedias, Texas. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Bedias.

She was preceded in death by her husband on Sept. 23, 1987; by her son, Ted Jr., on Dec. 2, 1996; by her father in 1953; her mother in 1969; her brothers, William Melville Jr. on Sept. 17, 1972 and Charles Lafayette on Dec. 18, 1985; by her sisters, Mrs. Johnnie H. Dyer (Ruby) on July 20, 1987, Mrs. Clell Q. Thorpe (Evalene) on Dec. 17, 1997 and a baby sister who died in infancy. She is survived by five nephews, Charles Freddy, Terry Wayne, Phillip Dale and William Quentin Hinds and Joel Glynn Dyer; and Ted’s nephew, Robert James Harris and their wives and families; by many cousins and one aunt, Mrs. Clater Kirkpatrick (Christine Hinds).

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, January 29, 2001 at the First United Methodist Church of Bedias. Arrangements are under the direction of Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Bedias, Texas. The Revs. Clyde Copeland and John Baer of Crockett will officiate. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Richards, Texas.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, January 28, 2001 at the funeral home.

Honorary Pallbearers are Julian (Sonny) Burtis, Roger Daniel, David Mouser, R.E.L. Upchurch III, Shane Neal, Warren Carroll and Dr. D.P. Heaton.

Active Pallbearers are Freddy Hinds, Terry Hinds, Clint Hinds, Quenton Hinds, Rudy DeHart and Joel Dyer.

In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Red Cloud Indian School, Pine Ridge, South Dakota, 57770.

Forrest Franklin Allen
May 1, 1912 — Jan. 26, 2001

CENTERVILLE — Services for Forrest Franklin Allen, 88, of Marquez are set for 2 p.m. Sunday at the Walters Funeral Home Chapel in Centerville.

Lenton Speer of the Marquez Church of Christ will officiate. Burial will be in the Old Bowling Cemetery near Marquez.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to the time of the services Sunday at the funeral home.

Mr. Allen died Friday at his ranch.

He was born in Walker County, Texas, and spent most of his life in Marquez. He was a farmer and rancher and served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European and African theaters. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Mexia and attended the Church of Christ in Marquez at the time of his death.

Survivors include his wife, Rachel Allen of Marquez; a sister, Minnie Maddux of Beaumont; a sister-in-law, Evelyn Allen of Huntsville; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Tommie Fay Casey
March 17, 1935 — Jan. 26, 2001

MADISONVILLE — Services for Tommie Fay Casey, 65, of North Zulch are set for 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Willowhole Chapel in North Zulch.

The Rev. Dean Ferguson will officiate. Burial will be in Willowhole Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Madisonville Funeral Home.

Mrs. Casey died Friday at her home.

She was born in North Zulch and returned to North Zulch 17 years ago. She formerly lived in Oklahoma City. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Tommy Casey.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Kelleen Casey of League City; two brothers, Dick Campbell of Madisonville and Jack Campbell of North Zulch; a sister, Maurine Willhelm of North Zulch; and two grandchildren.

Johnnie B. Gillam
Feb. 19, 1917 — Jan. 26, 2001

FRANKLIN — Services for Johnnie B. Gillam, 83, of Wharton, Texas, are set for 2 p.m. Monday at the Franklin Church of Christ.

Gene Polvado of the Wharton Church of Christ will officiate. Burial will be in the West Boone Prairie Cemetery near Franklin.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday and from 8 a.m. to noon Monday at the McCauley Funeral Home in Franklin.

Mrs. Gillam died Friday in Wharton.

She was born in Robertson County and was retired after 16 years as secretary to the Texas State Comptroller. She was a member of the Wharton Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, R.C. Gillam.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary McDonald of Wharton and Carolyn Johnson of Cumming, Ga.; a son, Ronald Charles Gillam of Houston; a sister, Mary Louise Carter of Houston; a brother and sister-in-law, Ray and Sue Maxwell of Franklin; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Ed Prescott
Nov. 12, 1944 — Jan. 25, 2001

Private services for Ed Prescott, 56, of Bryan will be held at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan.

Mr. Prescott died Thursday in St. Joseph Regional Health Center.

He was born in Philadelphia and lived in Bryan since 1993. He formerly lived in Browns Mills, N.J., and was a thermit welder for Orgo-Thermit, Inc., in Lakehurst, N.J., for 35 years.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Prescott of Bryan; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Edward and Valerie Prescott of Stockbridge, Ga., and Matthew Frederick Prescott of Bryan; a daughter, Patty Ann French of Westville, Fla.; five sisters and two brothers-in-law, Alma of Woodbridge, N.J., Emma and Primo Pica of Philadelphia, Anna and Mike Hulick and Eleanor Gilbert, all of Browns Mills, and Florence Ravenell of Orlando, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the St. Joseph Foundation Cancer Center, P.O. Box 993, Bryan, Texas 77805-9936.

Anthony Richard ‘Tony’ Passarello Sr.
Feb. 11, 1924 — Jan. 26, 2001

Services for Anthony Richard “Tony” Passarello Sr., 76, of Bryan are set for 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bryan.

The Rev. John McCaffrey of St. Joseph Catholic Church will officiate.

Arrangements are under the direction of Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan.

Mr. Passarello died Friday at his home.

He was born in Euclid, Ohio, and lived in Bryan for 20 years. He was a retired engineer and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the St. Joseph Auxiliary.

He was preceded in death by a son, David Passarello.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Passarello of Bryan; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Mercedes Passarello of Palm Springs, Fla., and Tony and Barbara Passarello of Dallas; a brother, Joseph Passarello of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and three sisters, Frances Bernetith, Mary Gorek and Florence Kastelic, all of Cleveland, Ohio.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Brazos Valley, 205 East 29th Street, Bryan, Texas 77803.

Joy Ann Ascol Dyer
Aug. 9, 1941 — Jan. 28, 2001

Joy Ann Ascol Dyer was born in Tioga, Louisiana, to Al and Marzelle Ascol. She attended school in Beaumont, Texas, and graduated from South Park High School in 1959 and Lamar University in 1963. She also received her master’s degree from Texas A&M University in 1983.

She retired in June 2000, after a distinguished career of 34 years in the field of elementary education. Her tenure in Bryan included a teaching position at Crockett Elementary School, staff development leader and reading supervisor, principal at Johnson Elementary, Director of Elementary Education and Executive Director of Elementary Education. Under her leadership, many of the elementary schools in Bryan received state and national recognition and many innovative programs were implemented. She loved children and had the unique ability to see things through the eyes of a child.

She received many honors during her career, most notably Outstanding Elementary Teacher of the Year in Bryan ISD in 1980 and the Bryan ISD Heart Award in 2000.

Joy was involved in a number of church, school and community organizations. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Bryan. She belonged to the following professional organizations: Association of Texas Professional Educators, Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association, National Association of Staff Development, Delta Kappa Gamma and Phi Kappa Phi. She served in various organizations, including the Board of Directors of the Bryan-College Station Chamber of Commerce, Brazos Valley United Way and the Brazos Valley Rehabilitation Center.

Joy’s name is a familiar acronym for Jesus Others Yourself and her life was a testament to this. She was a leader of people but a follower of Jesus Christ and always put Him first in her life. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life and she led by her Christian example. She truly was one who put others before herself, having spent her entire life in service to others. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She took great pleasure in doing special things with her granddaughters, Madison and Macy Joy, and had pride in her family’s accomplishments. She was a dear friend to many and always found time for them as well. Her life was a model to emulate and her courageous battle with brain cancer was a testimony of faith. Her spirit will live on in the many lives she has touched.

She was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by her husband of 35 years, Dean Dyer of Bryan; her son and daughter-in-law, Greg and JoLynn Dyer of Spicewood, Texas; two granddaughters, Madison Paige Dyer and Macy Joy Dyer of Spicewood, Texas; three brothers, Alfred Ascol and his wife Carol of Mauriceville, Texas, Bill Ascol and his wife Karen of Shreveport, Louisiana, Tom Ascol and his wife Donna of Cape Coral, Florida; two sisters, Gay Cravy of Hampshire, Texas, and Judy Bertrand and her husband Royce of Beaumont, Texas; one sister-in-law, Dianne Epperson and her husband Larry of Dallas, Texas; her mother-in-law, Laverne Dyer of Dallas, Texas; as well as a large extended family and many dear friends.

Memorial Services are set for 11 a.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church of Bryan with Dr. Tom Ascol, Dr. Tim Owens and Pastor Bill Ascol officiating. Interment will follow in the Bryan City Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Hillier Funeral Home.
