Jocie W. Barrett

Jan. 1, 1912 — March 24, 2001

MADISONVILLE — Services for Jocie W. Barrett, 89, of Madisonville are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Madisonville.

Dr. J.W.L. Adams and the Rev. Leroy Stanton will officiate. Burial will be the Madisonville City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday at the Madisonville Funeral Home.

Mrs. Barrett died Saturday in Madison St. Joseph Health Center in Madisonville.

She was a lifelong resident of Madisonville and was a member of the First Baptist Church. She worked in the Madison County Clerk’s office as a clerk and assistant for more than 25 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Lee Barrett, and a son, John Lee Barrett Jr.

Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Alice Barrett of Houston; a granddaughter; a great-grandson; two nieces; and a nephew.

Rebecca M. Jackson

March 9, 1939 — March 22, 2001

Services for Rebecca M. Jackson, 62, of Bryan are set for 1 p.m. Wednesday at the G.W. Tabernacle in Bryan.

The Rev. C.L. King of Mt. Nebo Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Jones-Washington Mortuary in Bryan.

A wake service will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Jackson died Thursday in St. Joseph Regional Health Center.

She was born in Robertson County and lived in Bryan for 43 years. She was a custodial worker at Texas A&M University. She was a member of Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, where she was vice president of the Usher Board.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kernon Jackson.

Survivors include four sons and two daughters-in-law, Harold Taylor, Lorenzo Jackson and Calvin and Marilyn Jackson, all of Bryan, and Kernon Jr. and Linda Jackson of Temple; three daughters and sons-in-law, Gransonta and John W. Smith, Glenda and Earl Wright and Lois and Nathan Fletcher, all of Bryan; four brothers, Issac Taylor, the Rev. H.R. Taylor, Jimmie Taylor and Willie Lee Taylor, all of Bryan; five sisters, Ella Mae West of Lubbock, Rosie M. Ford of Franklin, Ernestine Jackson, Mattie Taylor, Mae Helen Johnson, all of Bryan; her step-mother, Willie Taylor of Bryan; 15 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Beulah Breazeale Bear Smith

May 29, 1916 — March 19, 2001

CROCKETT — Services for Beulah Breazeale Bear Smith, 84, of Houston County, Texas, were held Thursday in Claybar Waller-Ramsey Chapel.

The Rev. E.P. Ramsey Jr. officiated. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park.

Mrs. Smith died March 19.

She was born in Porter Springs and was a lifelong resident of Houston County. She taught health and physical exercise and was a coach of basketball, volleyball and tennis at Crockett High School for over 30 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Crockett and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Walter Bear and Ted Smith.

Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, William Griffin and Loraine Breazeale of College Station; stepchildren, Patricia Sims and Lavonne and Bill Bennette, all of Crockett, Jerry and Shirley Smith of Hockley, Peggy and Tommy Davidson of Brazoria, Danny and Jean Smith of Centerville; a nephew; two nieces; four great-nieces; three great-nephews; a great-great-niece; and a great-great-nephew.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Union Prairie Baptist Church in Porter Springs, Route 2, Box 116D, Crockett, Texas 75835.

Glenda Bea Davis

CLEVELAND — Services for Glenda Bea Davis, 84, of Cleveland are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Martins Prairie Baptist Church in Keith, Texas.

Burial will be in Concord Cemetery in Iola.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Cleveland.

Mrs. Davis died Sunday.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Davis.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Albert and Beverly Davis; a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Doug Hajer; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Christine Ann Merka Lewis

June 2, 1914 — March 24, 2001

Services for Christine Ann Merka Lewis, 86, of Bryan are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan.

The Rev. James E. “Jim” Lewis will officiate. Burial will be in Smetana Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Lewis died Saturday in Corpus Christi.

She was born in Brazos County and was a lifelong resident of Bryan. She was a member of the United Free Will Baptist Church and was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Estal M. Lewis of Bryan; two sons, James E. “Jim” Lewis and Ernest A. Lewis; six sisters, Lillian Lero, Ann Shaffner, Clara Konecny, Mary Fick, Emma Hampton and Dorothy Maner; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to United Free Will Baptist Church.

Allen Belcher Norcross

June 10, 1932 — March 26, 2001

WOLFE CITY — Services for Allen Belcher Norcross, 68, of Wolfe City are set for 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the R.W. Owens & Son Funeral Home Chapel in Wolfe City.

Chaplain Bill Berryman and Douglas Norcross will officiate. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Friday in Suggs Cemetery in Hearne with a Masonic service.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Norcross died Monday in the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in Dallas.

He was born in Caldwell and served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the Restored Church of Jesus Christ in Dallas.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Louise Kosh Norcross of Wolfe City; four sons, Fred Norcross of Wolfe City, Roy Norcross of Hewitt, Karl Norcross of Red Oak and Mark Norcross of Silver City, N.M.; two daughters, Paula Fitzgerald of Wolfe City and Karla Orr of Leonard; a brother, Douglas Norcross of Corinth; two sisters, Marjorie Patke of Bryan and Amy Koehler of Dallas; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Maggie M. Sheppard

April 22, 1913 — March 24, 2001

Services for Maggie M. Sheppard 87, of Bryan are set for 1 p.m. Wednesday at Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church in Bryan.

The Revs. Robert Jeffries of Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church and Maurice Green Jr. of Lily of the Valley Church will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Daniel & Son Funeral Home in Bryan.

A wake service will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Sheppard died Saturday in Hospice Medical Center.

She was born in Somerville and was a lifelong resident of Bryan. She was a retired elementary school teacher and was a member of the Retired Texas Teacher’s Association. She was a member of Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church and was president of the Stewart Board No. 1.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Wesley Sheppard Sr.

Survivors include a son, James W. Sheppard Jr. of Bryan; three daughters, Dr. Darlene Ruth Abram of Oklahoma City, Carolyn J. Ward of Houston and Beverly Lawson of Missouri City, Texas; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society of Houston.

Melba Lowery Sollock
July 6, 1911 — March 25, 2001

PASADENA — Services for Melba Lowery Sollock, 89, of Pasadena are set for 10 a.m. Tuesday at the South Main Baptist Church in Pasadena.

The Revs. Ron Lyles and B.J. Martin will officiate. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Zion Cemetery in Iola.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Pasadena Funeral Chapel.

Mrs. Sollock died Sunday.

She lived in Pasadena since 1941 and was a charter member of the South Main Baptist Church, where she served as the nursery coordinator. She taught 17 years at South Shaver Elementary and was past president of the Pasadena Reading Club.

Survivors include her husband, D.T. “Jack” Sollock of Pasadena; a son and daughter-in-law, Charles T. and Mary Kay Sollock of Pasadena; a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Eddie Satterwhite formerly of Pasadena; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the South Main Baptist Church of Pasadena.

De Camenisha ‘Shan’ Turner

April 12, 1989 — March 23, 2001

MADISONVILLE — Services for De Camenisha “Shan” Turner, 11, of Madisonville are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pool Chapel Baptist Church in Madisonville.

The Rev. Cedric Rouse will officiate.

Arrangements are under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home in Madisonville.

De Camenisha died Friday.

Joy E. Taylor

Dec. 13, 1923 — March 25, 2001

SOMERVILLE — Services for Joy E. Taylor, 77, of Somerville are set for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Strickland Funeral Home Chapel in Somerville. The Rev. Jimmy VanDorn will officiate. Burial will be in the Oaklawn Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. Wednesday until service time at the funeral home.

Mrs. Taylor died Sunday at St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan.

She was born in Tyler.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alford Taylor.

Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Alice and Tim Boyce of Somerville, Darlene and Ken Gibson of Burton, Linda Howard and fiance Lloyd Lane of Somerville; a son and daughter-in-law, Gordon (Alfred) and Rosie Taylor of Mansfield, La.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
