Sept. 13, 1910 — April 30, 2001

DEANVILLE — Services for Annie Helweg, 90, of Deanville are set for 2 p.m. Thursday at Strickland Funeral Home Chapel in Caldwell. The Rev. Curtis Schneider of Faith Lutheran Church in Mexia, Texas, will officiate. Burial will be in the Masonic Cemetery in Caldwell.

Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Helweg died Monday.

She was born in Caldwell and was retired as a bookkeeper for First State Bank in Deanville. She was a longtime resident of Deanville and a member of the Deanville Sons of Hermann Lodge. Mrs. Helweg was also a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Deanville and recently moved her membership to Faith Lutheran Church in Mexia.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Helweg.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Barry and Martha Helweg of Mexia; a brother and sister-in-law, B.J. and Iris Piwetz of Duncanville, Texas; a sister and brother-in-law, Marie and Charles Campbell of Austin; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church in Deanville or Faith Lutheran Church in Mexia.

Lawrence Curtis ‘Dobie’ Gooden Sr.

Sept. 20, 1948 — April 27, 2001

Services for Lawrence Curtis “Dobie” Gooden Sr., 52, of College Station are set for 11 a.m. Thursday at the Lincoln Center, 1000 Eleanor St., in College Station. The Rev. Melvin Amerson of First United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be in the College Station Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Peoples Mortuary in Bryan.

Mr. Gooden died Friday.

He was born in Brazos County. He was a graduate of E.A. Kemp High School in Bryan. He was the chairman of the board of trustees and a member on the finance committee at First United Methodist Church.

He served in the United States Army where he was awarded a purple heart and a bronze star. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in College Station.

Survivors include his wife, Janet Gooden of College Station; three sons, Shatner, Brodric, and Lawrence Gooden Jr., all of College Station; a daughter, Jalisha Gooden of College Station; two brothers, Ronald and Jimmy Gooden, both of Bryan; two sisters, Karen Linnear of Hampton, Va., and Amber Davis of Bryan; and one granddaughter.

David Eugene Bennett

July 9, 1956 — April 28, 2001

DENVER — Services for David Eugene Bennett, 44, of Denver and formerly of College Station, are set for 10 a.m. Thursday at A&M United Methodist Church in College Station. Dr. Jerry Neff will officiate. Burial will be in the College Station Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the direction of Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan.

Mr. Bennett died Saturday in Denver.

He was born in Boston, Mass. He lived in Colorado for the past 15 years.

Survivors include a son, Barron Dean Bennett of College Station; Barron’s mother, Lisa Yeagin of College Station; a sister and brother-in-law, Elaine and Steve Gartrell of Houston; his parents, Earl D. and Agnes Bennett of College Station; and numerous other relatives.

Memorials may be made to the Youth Scholarship Fund at A&M United Methodist Church, 417 University Drive, C.S., Texas.

Herman Turner Ratliff

Oct. 16, 1934 — April 27, 2001

Services for Herman Turner Ratliff, 66, of Bryan are set for 10 a.m. Saturday at United Missionary Full Gospel Baptist Church. Bishop J.C. Ebbs will officiate. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Peoples Mortuary in Bryan.

Mr. Ratliff died Friday at his home in Bryan.

He was born in Brazos County and was a lifetime resident.

Survivors include a son, Michael Austin of Bryan; four daughters, Brenda Faye Ratliff Smith and Laquita Goins, both of Bryan, Michelle Adams Morris of Washington, D.C., and Kathy Cotton of New York, N.Y.; 20 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Floyd Lee Turner Sr.

Dec. 16, 1942 — April 29, 2001

Services for Floyd Lee Turner Sr., 58, of Bryan are set for 11 a.m. Friday at Agape Christian Center in Bryan. The Rev. James Turner will officiate. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at Jones-Washington Mortuary in Bryan. A wake service will be from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Turner died Sunday at his home.

He was born in Fort Worth and lived in Bryan for 22 years. He was a mechanic. Mr. Turner was an usher and member of the Agape Christian Center and a member of the local Hot Rod Club.

Survivors include his wife, Rachel Louise Turner of Bryan; seven sons, Marquis Montrel Turner, Floyd Lee Turner Jr. and Tristan Maurice Turner, all of Bryan, Dennis Lee Turner of Austin, Ron Earl Crawford of San Antonio, Ester Lee Turner of Dallas and Michael Wayne Turner of Palestine; five daughters, Florica Lanette Turner and Brittany Rachelle Turner, both of Bryan, Andrea Lynn King, Linda Joyce Turner and Misty Machell Turner, all of Palestine; two brothers, Julius Edward Turner and Jerry Willis Turner, both of Palestine; a sister, Mamie Lee Dennis of Palestine; 31 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth Burrows Howell

Oct. 29, 1907 — May 1, 2001

Services for Elizabeth Burrows Howell, 93, of Bryan are set for 2 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church of Bryan. The Revs. Philip McLarty and Steve Wilkins will officiate.

Arrangements are under the direction of Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan.

Mrs. Howell died Tuesday at Crestview Nursing Home.

She was born in Waco and lived in Bryan since 1930. She was a homemaker.

Mrs. Howell was a graduate of Sophie-Newcomb University in New Orleans. She was a member of the Woman’s Club and Pi Beta Phi, founder of the Newcomers Club and founder of Merchants New Neighbor Service. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Bryan.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Webb Howell.

Survivors include a son, John Webb Howell of Bonham; four daughters and two sons-in-laws, Cathy and John Pearson of Houston, Sidney and Kaye Wilkins of San Antonio, Josephine Helland of Houston and Sue Baine of San Antonio; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Bryan, 1100 Carter Creek Parkway, Bryan TX 77802.

Lawrence Curtis ‘Dobie’ Gooden Sr.

Sept. 20, 1948 — April 27, 2001

Boyd William Shipman, Sr.

June 23, 1929 — May 3, 2001

PASADENA — Graveside services for Boyd William Shipman, Sr., 71, of Pasadena are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at the Jozye Cemetery near Madisonville. The Rev. Jerald Brown will officiate.

Madisonville Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Shipman died Thursday in Pasadena. He was born in Albany, Texas, lived in Pasadena, Texas, for the last 10 years and was formerly of Houston. He was raised in Rule, Texas, and was a carpenter. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Boyd William Jr. and Anita Shipman of La Porte; three daughters and sons-in-law, Debera and David Jensen of Spring, Karen and Duane Gustavus Jr. of Corpus Christi and Ruby and Kenneth Elrod of Pasadena; his daughter-in-law, Theresa Cooper of Mont Belvieu, Texas; a brother and sister-in-law, Loyd Wayne “Buddy” and Louise Shipman of Bedias; 12 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Frances Hause Wootan

June 4, 1910 — May 1, 2001

SAN MARCOS — Services for Frances Hause Wootan, 90, of San Marcos are set for 11 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Calvert. The Rev. Dr. Joe Bailey of Milano will officiate. Burial will be in the Sunnyside Cemetery in Calvert.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Heartfield Funeral Home in Hearne.

Mrs. Wootan died Tuesday in San Marcos. She was born in Calvert. She was a homemaker and a former member and Sunday school teacher at the First Baptist Church in Calvert. She was active in the Women’s Missionary’s Union. and sang in the church choir. She was also a member of the Westover Baptist Church in San Marcos.

She was prceded in death by her husband, Ezell Wootan.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Wilford and Betty Wootan of San Marcos; a daughter, Helen Swindell of Houston; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Pauline Hause Marshall and the Rev. Roy Marshall of Crockett, Margaret Hause Walston of Houston and Doris Hause Snow of Kilgore; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Calvert.

John B. Childs, Jr.

Aug. 1, 1934 — April 28, 2001

Services for John B. Childs, Jr., 66, of Bryan are set for 1 p.m. Saturday at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church. The Revs. Craig Anderson and Chris Goins will officiate. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and wake service will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Daniel & Son Funeral Home in Bryan.

Mr. Childs died Saturday at Sherwood Health Care.

He was born in Mumford, was a longtime resident of Bryan and attended Bryan public schools. He was a truck driver and member of the finance committee at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Survivors include six daughters, Lyquitta Hollie of Bryan, Lovie Hollie of San Antonio, Gloria Johnson Mitchell of Bryan, Lyquitta Johnson of Bryan, Keisha Ross-Green of Madisonville and Shuntese Ross of Bryan; four sons, Danny McDade of Marlin, Dr. Don Renchie and Larry Johnson, both of Bryan, and Cedric Howell of Arlington; two brothers, Raymond Childs of Tunis and Marvin Childs of Bryan; two sisters, Viola Taylor of Houston and Annie Lois of Indianapolis, Ind.; and 19 grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church.

Roy Lamb

April 18, 1936 — May 2, 2001

LILAC COMMUNITY — Services for Roy Lamb, 65, of the Lilac Community are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Phillips & Luckey Funeral Home in Rockdale. The Rev. Randy Osborn will officiate. Burial will be in the Lilac Cemetery near Rockdale.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mr. Lamb died Wednesday at Marlin V.A. Hospital. He was born in Buckholts and was in the floor-covering business.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Lamb of Lilac; seven sons, Dwayne Lamb of Lexington, Royce Lamb of Caldwell, Roger Lamb of Killeen, Ronnie Lamb of Gustine, Charles Parker of New Mexico, Robert Parker of Taylor and Jimmy Parker of Rogers; three brothers, Jimmy Lamb of Morgan, Steve Lamb of Dallas and Donnie Lamb of Athens; three sisters, Laverne Penrose of Malkoff, Cora Gali of Kerens and Barbara Beavers of Kerens; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Joe Charles Lero

Sept. 8, 1919 — May 2, 2001

Services for Joe Charles Lero, 81, of Bryan are set for 11 a.m. Saturday at Central Baptist Church in Bryan. The Rev. Chris Osborne of Central Baptist Church will officiate. Burial will be in the Restever Memorial Park in Bryan.Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Callaway-Jones Funeral Home.

Mr. Lero died Wednesday at St. Joseph Regional Health Center.

He was born in Brazos County and was retired after 38 years with General Telephone. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and was a member of VFW Post 4692. He was a lifetime member of The Pioneer Club and active with the Upper Crust at First Presbyterian Church. He was a member of Central Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Helen Harrison Lero of Bryan; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Charles Lero of New Jersey, Bill and Peggy Lero of Bryan, Terry Lero of Houston and Gaylan and Lori Lero of Houston; a brother and sister-in-law, Emory and Alice Lero of Bryan; and four grandchildren. Memorials may be made to Central Baptist Church Building Fund, 600 S. Coulter, Bryan, Texas 77803; American Heart Association, Brazos County Division, P.O. Box 4358, Bryan, Texas 77805; or a charity of choice.

Melvin “Hoss” Warren

Nov. 1, 1911 — May 3, 2001

CALVERT — Services for Melvin “Hoss” Warren, 89, of Calvert are set for 2 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Calvert. Dr. Joe Weldon Bailey of Milano and Rev. Jeff Riley of First Baptist Church in Calvert will officiate. Graveside service will be at Crosbyton, Texas. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Heartfield Funeral Home in Hearne and on Sunday at Adams Funeral Home in Crosbyton.

Mr. Warren died Thursday at his home in Calvert. He was born in Seymour and lived in Calvert for 30 years. He was a rancher and cowboy. He worked for Matador Ranch in West Texas for many years and also worked for James Jones’ Elmwood Ranch in Calvert for many years. He was working for Allen Wiese in Calvert at the time of his death.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean conflict. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Calvert.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Warren. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Leslie and Maria Warren of Gainesville; a brother, Clyde Warren of Tulsa, Okla.; a brother-in-law, Frances Gunter of Floydada; two sisters, Lela Crawford of Hamlin and Wilma Loflin of Anson; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Marjorie Nell Ryan

March 7, 1940 — May 2, 2001

FRANKLIN — Services for Marjorie Nell Ryan, 61, of Franklin are set for 2 p.m. Sunday at the McCauley Funeral Home Chapel in Franklin. Rodney Box of the Franklin Worship Center will officiate. Burial will be in the Shiloh Cemetery in Robertson County. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at McCauley Funeral Home in Franklin.

Ms. Ryan died Wednesday at St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan.

She was born in Canton, Miss. and was a resident of Robertson County for 11 years. She worked for the Executive Inn as a night auditor and desk clerk. She was a member of the Franklin Worship Center.

Survivors include a daughter, De Ann Linton of Rio Vista; a son and daughter-in-law, Jay and Mary Futrell of Rio Vista; her parents, Virginia and Howard Dantzler of Anderson, S.C.; a sister, Debbie Gaines of Anderson, S.C.; and three grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

John B. Childs Jr.

Aug. 1, 1934 — April 28, 2001

Services for John B. Childs, Jr., 66, of Bryan are set for 1 p.m. Saturday at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church.

James Dobbs

July 24, 1935 — May 3, 2001

Services for James Dobbs, 65, of Franklin are set for 2 p.m. Sunday at Hillier Funeral Home in Bryan.

The Rev. C.E. Barnett of Southside Baptist Church in Franklin will officiate. Burial will be in Bryan City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday and from noon to the time of the services Sunday at the funeral home.

Mr. Dobbs died Thursday at his home.

He was born in Covington, Texas, and was a lifelong resident of Franklin. He was a welder and was a member of the Hearne VFW and Pipefitters Union No. 211. He was a member of United Free Will Baptist Church and served in the military.

He was preceded in death by a wife, Emily Margaret Dobbs.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Dobbs of Franklin; two sons and daughters-in-law, James Wendel and Elaine Dobbs of Edge and Ronnie Joe and Sandy Dobbs of Franklin; a daughter and son-in-law, La Wanna and Galen Gustavus of Bryan; a sister, Mary Ann Thorpe of Franklin; and eight grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Brazos Valley, 205 E. 29th Street, Bryan, Texas 77803.

Louise Ray Herrera

Aug. 25, 1934 — May 4, 2001

Services for Louise Ray Herrera, 66, of Bryan are set for 2 p.m. Sunday at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Bryan.

The Rev. Moses Herrera will officiate. Burial will be in Bryan City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday and from 8 a.m. to the time of the services Sunday at the funeral home.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Herrera died Friday at her home.

She was born in Maysfield and lived in Bryan 56 years. She was a homemaker and was a Baptist.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, James and Virginia Herrera and Andy and Anna Herrera, all of Bryan; two daughters, Mary Herrera and Molly Herrera, both of Bryan; a brother, Alfred Casarez of Bryan; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Ernestine and Jessie Savala of Itasca and Carolina and Andrew Cantu of Waxahachie; and seven grandchildren.
