Jerry Kuba
Funeral services for Jerry John Kuba, 89, of Altair, will be held Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Eagle Lake. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Nada.
Visitation will be from 6-8:30 p.m. today, Wednesday, at Henneke Funeral Home in Columbus. A rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. today.
Mr. Kuba died Nov. 4, 2002, at Rice Medical Center in Eagle Lake. He was born Nov. 22, 1912, in Granger, to Adolph Kuba and Maria Sill Kuba.
He moved to Colorado County in 1948 and worked as an operator for Altair Rice Inc. and later retired from Rice Consolidated Independent School District Maintenance.
Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Mary Martinka Kuba of Altair; children and their spouses, Henrietta and Jerry Decker of Anton; Ted and Dorothy Kuba of El Campo, Mildred and Charles Squyres of Columbus, Rudy and Vivian Kuba of Beasley, Milton Kuba of Altair, Rita and Manier Gavranovic of Wharton, Helen and Ken Dooley of Richmond, Norbert and Janice Kuba of West Columbia and Andrew and Pat Kuba of Rosenberg; daughter-in-law, Pat Pettus of Huffman; sister, Geraldine Kuba of Dallas; 21 grandchildren and 18 great- grandchildren. He was preceded in dearth by his parents, six sisters, one brother, a son, Louis R. Kuba, a Houston Police Officer who was killed in the line of duty in 1967.
Marvin Rodgers
Graveside services for Marvin Andrew Rodgers, 87, of Bay City, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Paul Thomasson officiating.
Mr. Rodgers died Nov. 4, 2002, in Wharton. He was born on Aug. 28, 1915, in Burr, the son of the late George Francis Rodgers and Ada Elizabeth Rodgers.
He was reared in Hallettsville and was a graduate of Hallettsville High School. At the beginning of World War II he worked as a welder in Houston for many years. Mr. Rodgers moved to Sargent where he worked in the fishing and shrimping industry and later managed a grocery store. He moved to Bay City and managed several service stations until 1987 and then he was employed as a warehouseman for Mike Pruitt Exxon Warehouse. He was a former resident of Houston, Sargent and Van Vleck before moving to Bay City in 1982.
Survivors include his sons and daughter-in-law, Marvin Wayne and Nan Rodgers of Bay City and Joe Allen Rodgers of Bay City; sister and brother-in-law, Frankie and Jack Pulitzer of Beaumont; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mason Walker
Funeral services for Mason A. Walker, age 82, of Wharton, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Friends may call for visitation from 6-9 p.m. Thursday evening at the Wharton Funeral Home.
Christina Valdez
Funeral services for Christina C. Valdez, 83, of Houston, were held Monday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Rosary services were held Sunday at Wharton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Valdez died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2002, at her residence in Houston following an extended illness. She was born Dec. 5, 1918, in Refugio, the daughter of the late Maria Guadalupe Martinez and Carlos Sedillo.
She was reared in Refugio and Wharton prior to moving to Houston where she lived most of her Life. Mrs. Valdez was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Houston.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Virginia C. and Gilbert Gonzalez of Houston; sisters. Maria Gaona of Wharton, Louisa Gaona of El Campo, Margaret Varela of Wharton, Mary Villarreal of Angleton and Janie Compian of Lane City; brothers, Manuel Sedillo of Wharton and Mike Sedillo of Lane City; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three sons and a brother.
Bill Edwards
Funeral services for Bill Michael Edwards, 49, of Garland, were held Saturday at College Park Church of Christ. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Edwards died Jan. 2, 2003, in Garland. He was born Jan. 22, 1955, in Wharton.
He worked as a petroleum engineer, most recently for an oil exploration consulting firm in Dallas. Mr. Edwards was a very active member of College Park Church of Christ and taught in Bible study classes and was a song leader. He had a passion for golf and played as a member of the Oak Ridge Golf Course.
He is survived by his father, W.A. Edwards; son, Bret; daughter, Alysa; two brothers and two sisters.

Robert Hodge
Robert Jefferson Hodge Sr., age 89, of Pledger, died Thursday, Jan. 2, 2003, in a Richmond hospital following a brief illness. He was born on Feb. 18, 1913, in Beasley, the son of the late Oliver Jefferson Hodge Jr. and Willie Louise Harrison Hodge.
He was a graduate of Texas A&M College, Class of 1935. He married Beatrice Ethelen East on April 16, 1946, in Columbus and she preceded him in death on May 20, 2000. Mr. Hodge was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He was a rancher all of his life, a life-long resident of Pledger, and a Protestant by faith. He was a member of the Matagorda County Cattlemen’s Association and was named Outstanding Cattleman of Matagorda County in 1967. He was also a founding member of the Matagorda County Youth Fair Association.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Jan. 6, 2003, at the Boling United Methodist Church with the Rev. Erskine W. Riveire officiating. Burial followed in the Wharton City Cemetery.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Donna L. and Steven L. Omelan of Conroe; sons and daughter-in-law, Robert J. and Linda Hodge Jr. of St. Charles, Mo., and Richard J. Hodge of Pledger; brother, Dexter L. Hodge of Bryan; seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and lifelong friends, Theodore and Sally Mick of Iago. Besides his wife, he was also preceded in death by his sister, Mary Eleise Shaw and his brother, Oliver Lloyd Hodge.
Pallbearers were Ricky Light, Don Sperry, Eddy Barker, Randy Hodge, Ben Hodge and John Omelan.
Honorary pallbearers were Theodore Mick, Leon Horelica, Lanier Chumchal, DeVoy Shaw, Dexter Hodge Jr., Jeff Hodge and Donald Baumbach.
In lieu of usual remembrances, the family requests memorials to the Boling United Methodist Church, Boling, Texas 77420.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.
Ruth Reimer
Ruth Brown Reimer of East Bernard passed away at home Jan. 4, 2003. Funeral services were held at First United Methodist Church in East Bernard on Tuesday at 2 p.m. Interment followed in the Methodist Cemetery in East Bernard. Pastor Michael Holcomb officiated.
Wilhemina Ruth Brown Reimer was born Feb. 27, 1917, in Douglas, Ariz. Her parents were Paul Talmadge Brown and Flossie Grote Brown. Mrs. Reimer’s ancestors settled in Central Texas and became ranchers, legislators, educators and founders of the Methodist ministry. Mrs. Reimer graduated from Cherokee High School in 1934. In 1938 she graduated from Southwest Texas State Teachers College and began her career as a first grade teacher in Markham. On July 16, 1939, she married Melvin A. Reimer, who was also a teacher in Markham. They were married 63 years. After Mr. Reimer’s service in World War II, they moved to Iago, Victoria, Houston, Waco and Jacksonville, Fla., before settling outside East Bernard in 1974.
Mrs. Reimer raised five children and enjoyed her life as a parent and partner to Mr. Reimer as he worked in the insurance business. She greatly enjoyed their travels all over the world and visited six of the seven continents and the Arctic Circle. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Order of the Eastern Star and received her 50-year pin from both organizations. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist church, for the past 28 years at First United Methodist Church in East Bernard.
Mrs. Reimer was preceded in death by her brother Joe Frazier Brown and his wife Jane. She is survived by her husband, Melvin A. Reimer of East Bernard; sons, James Reimer of Spicewood, Dave Reimer and wife Reta of Georgetown, Gary Reimer and wife Becky of Seguin; daughters, Betty Myers and husband David of Moorhead, Mon., and Dorothy Winkles and husband Carl of Knoxville, Tenn.; grandchildren, Roxanna Reimer of Seguin and Aaron Myers of Minneapolis, Minn. Mrs. Reimer is also survived by her sister Pauline Brown Schwartz and husband Herb of Austin; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Ella and Joe Machac of Point Blank, Ruth and Ben Reimer of Richmond, Lil Dawson of Huntsville, Ann Solomon of Stanton, Calif., and loving nieces and nephews. Mrs. Reimer leaves special friends and devoted care givers Debbie Hermes, Linda Shorter, Linda Shorter, Mary Lockridge and Jewel Lewis.
Pallbearers were her nephews: Joe Frazier Brown Jr., Bill Dawson, Terry Machac and Mark Smith; and friends: Jerry Boettcher, Ronald Gertson, David Webster and Jesse Buels.
Honorary pallbearers were the Joy Class of East Bernard United Methodist Church.

Caroline Sablatura
Caroline Slovak Sablatura, age 93, of Hungerford, died Jan. 6, 2003, in Lake Jackson Health Care Center. She was born on Oct. 10, 1909, in East Bernard, the daughter of the late John and Aloiza Slovak.
Mrs. Sablatura was a lifelong member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford and a member of the S.P.J.S.T. for 56 years. She married Frank Sablatura on July 3, 1934, in Wharton County and he preceded her in death in 1981. She was also preceded in death by a son, Frank Sablatura Jr. and wife, Dorothy; grandson, Scott Sablatura; brother, John Slovak and wife, Annie; sister, Ottilea Zahradnik and husband, Edd and sister, Mary Brenk.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003, at St. John’s Catholic Church with Father Henry Rachunek officiating. Interment will follow in St. John’s Cemetery. Rosary services were held Tuesday evening at Wharton Funeral Home.
Survivors include her sons, Ed Sablatura and wife, Lillian, of Lake Jackson and Henry Sablatura and wife, Sandy, of Lake Jackson; grandchildren, Loretta Meyer, Mary Jones, Teresa Schilhab, Ed Sablatura Jr., Sandy Zachary, Sue McCormick, Stan Sablatura, Vicky Raymond, Becky Sablatura, Bradley Sablatura, their spouses and numerous great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers are Ed Sablatura Jr., Lonnie Schilhab, Robert Jones Jr., James Zachary, Stan Sablatura and Robert Jones Sr.
Elicious Scott
Funeral services for Elicious “Bishop” Scott Sr., 78, of Wharton, will be held at 1 p.m. today, Wednesday, at Martin Luther King Church of Christ with Eddie Brinkley officiating. Burial will follow in Scott Cemetery at Boone’s Bend.
Mr. Scott died Jan. 3, 2002, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. He was born Jan. 8, 1924, in Boone’s Bend to John Bunion and Geraldine Wright Scott Sr.
He was a lifelong resident of Wharton County. Mr. Scott worked as a custodian at Wharton County Junior College. He was a member of the Church of Christ and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict.
Survivors include daughter, Billie Dean Heard of Wharton; sons, Elicious Scott Jr. of Houston, Donald Wayne Scott and Carlton Scott, both of Wharton, and Victor Scott of Sugar Land; sisters, L.V. Tisdale, Shelia Gooden and Joyce Taylor, all of Wharton, Dorothy Wiley and Mable Clark, both of Bay City, Mozell Westbrook of Houston and Q.V. Harris of San Antonio; brothers, John B. Scott Jr. of Richmond, Chester Scott of Compton, Calif., and Johnnie Lee Taylor of Bay City; 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Hortence Scott.

Robert Garcia
Funeral services for Robert Garcia, 34, of Austin and formerly of El Campo, were held Monday at St. Robert’s Catholic Church in El Campo. Burial followed in Midfield Cemetery. A rosary service was held Sunday at Wheeler Funeral Home in El Campo.
Mr. Garcia died Feb. 19, 2003, in Austin. He was born April 3, 1968, in El Campo to Concuelo Garcia Resendez and the late Jose L. Garcia.
He was Catholic by faith. Mr. Garcia was a 1988 graduate of Tidehaven High School. He moved to Austin after high school for nine years and returned to El Campo for five years before moving back to Austin last year.
Survivors include mother and step-father, Concuelo Resendez and Sesario Resendez of Wharton; daughter, Adorée Garcia of Austin; brothers, Joe Luis Garcia of Wharton, John H. Garcia of Wharton and James M. Garcia of Lake Jackson; and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his father, Jose L. Garcia, and a brother, Jacinto Garcia.
Jessie Johnson
Funeral services for Jessie Mae Johnson, 89, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at New Zion Bethel Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Jake Ford Community Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Friday at New Zion Bethel Baptist Church.
Mrs. Johnson died Feb. 21, 2003.
