Bessie Timmerman

Funeral services for Bessie Gladys Timmerman, 93, of Houston, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at Wharton Funeral Home with Doug Allee officiating. Burial will follow in Wharton City Cemetery.

Mrs. Timmerman died Jan. 13, 2003, in a Pasadena hospital following a sudden illness. She was born on Feb. 5, 1909, in Groveton, the daughter of the late James Neddard Peebles and Mary Elizabeth Smith Peebles.

She was a former resident of Wharton and a resident of Houston for the past 45 years. Mrs. Timmerman married Henry Ernest Timmerman on April 21, 1931, in Wharton, and he preceded her in death on Feb. 8, 1988. She was also preceded in death by a son, James H. Timmerman in 1991 and a daughter, Paulette Campbell in 1993. Mrs. Timmerman was a member of the Stafford Church of Christ in Stafford and was also a member of the National Committee To Preserve Social Security and Medicare. She worked as a sales clerk with Palais Royal until her retirement in 1985.

Survivors include daughters, Elizabeth Franke of Pflugerville and Mary Lou Williams of Lynchburg, Va.; 10 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services are under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.

Jo Galloway

Jo Frances Payne Galloway, 60, went home to be with the Lord on March 7, 2003, at M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston after an extended illness. She is survived by her husband Thomas Galloway to whom she had been married almost 41 years. They had two children: son, Tom Galloway and wife Laurie; and daughter, Jennifer West and husband Ty; grandchildren, Christopher and Joshua Galloway and Shaylee and Erin West. Other family include siblings Pat and John Avanzini of Corpus Christi, Joyce and Charlie Willoughby of West Columbia, Sonny and Carolyn Payne of West Columbia and Sue and John Reans of Sweeny.

Jo Frances Payne was born in Bay City on Feb. 26, 1943, to Howard Roy and Byrd Payne, the third of five children. Mrs. Galloway attended schools in Sweeny and graduated in 1961. She married Thomas Galloway on June 9, 1962, in First Baptist Church of Old Ocean. Mrs. Galloway studied nursing at Wharton County Junior College. The couple lived in Bryan/College Station while Thomas, affectionately called “T,” attended Texas A&M University. During their marriage they resided in various Texas towns, including, La Grange, Boling, Sweeny, West Columbia, Palacios and, most recently, Conroe. While living in Palacios, Mrs. Galloway returned to college and received her bachelor of arts degree from the University of Houston. She taught third grade in Palacios for 16 years and retired in 2001. The couple were active in the Baptist Church in Palacios and most recently in the Mims Baptist Church in Conroe.

Services were held in Wharton Funeral Home at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11. Interment was held at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Brother Gene Kendrick of Mims Baptist Church in Conroe officiated at the service in Wharton. A poem written by “T” to his wife, entitled “Love of My Life,” was read at the service.

Special music included “One Day at a Time.”

Pallbearers were Buc and Tony Avanzini, Steve Willoughby, Curtis Crow, Jason Hall and Robert Richardson.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that memorials be made to M.D. Anderson Hospital in Houston or Mims Baptist Church in Conroe.

Rosemary Karns

Funeral services for Rosemary Karns, 50, of East Bernard were held on Monday at Angeles Funeral Home in Rosenberg with interment following at Evergreen Memorial Park in Wharton.

Mrs. Karns was born on April 21, 1952, in Johnstown, Penn., to Vernon and Mary Alice Sparks and she passed away on March 7, 2003, at her residence in East Bernard.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Vernon and Mary Alice Sparks; brother, Robin Lee Sparks; and stepdaughter, Robin Lynn Rupp.

Mrs. Karns is survived by her loving husband of 33 years, Perry S. Karns; daughter and son-in-law, Bobbie Jo Karns Novicke and Chad Novicke; stepdaughter, Billie Jo Reynolds; grandchildren, Christie Ann Boyer, Sherry Lynn Gaber, Brandon Novicke, Michael Waite, Samuel Waite and Andrew Reynolds; great-grandson, Eric Boyer Jr.; brothers, Walter C. Coleman and David Sparks; sisters, Kathleen Bowen and Ruby Sparks; nephew, Charlie Weicht; and great-nephew, Cody Weicht.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Angeles Funeral Home in Rosenberg.

Felipe Marin

Funeral services for Felipe G. “Sonny” Marin, 66, of Hungerford were held Tuesday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Rosary services were held Monday at Wharton Funeral Home.

Mr. Marin died March 8, 2003, in Matagorda County while enjoying one of his favorite pastimes, fishing. He was born on Aug. 15, 1936, in Freeport, the son of the late Agapito Marin and Julia Lujan Marin.

He was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Marin was a former resident of Wharton before moving to Hungerford in 1983. For the past 16 years, he was employed as a electrical superintendent for United Electrical and Instrumentation. Mr. Marin had worked in the Dow Chemical Plant for 42 years. He married Adriana Reyes on April 18, 1993, in Angleton. Mr. Marin was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. He was active in Wharton youth baseball leagues for many years.

Survivors include his wife, Adriana Marin of Hungerford; daughters and sons-in-law, Belinda Martindale of Freeport, Cindy and Bobby Santos of Clute, Sandy Delgado and husband, David Santos, of Brazoria and Teresa and Jorge Briseno of Wharton; sons, Alejandro Felipe Marin of Wharton and Michael Gaston of Angleton; sisters, Mercedes Vela of Wharton, Susan Orta of Wharton, Francisca Marin, Josephina Garza and Mercedes Marin, all of Monterrey, Mexico; brothers, Jose Marin, Alfonso Marin and Fernando Marin all of Monterrey, Mexico; 10 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

If desiring, memorials may be made to the Leukemia Society of America, 730 N. Post Oak, Suite 314, Houston, Texas 77024; or to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 506 S. East Ave., Wharton, Texas 77488.

Earl Waddy

Funeral services for Earl “Blue” Waddy, 57, of Boling, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Peace Tabernacle United Pentecostal Church with Rev. Charles Fisher officiating. Burial will follow in Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Friday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.

Mr. Waddy died March 8, 2003. He was born Aug. 28, 1945, in Boling to Robert and Anita McDaniel Waddy.

Survivors include wife, Hannah McCoy Waddy of Boling; sons, John Waddy, Robert Wayne Waddy and Kevin Wayne Waddy, all of Boling, Jessie Earl Waddy of Wharton and Jerry Clarence Waddy of Houston; brothers, Lorenzo Waddy and Alfred Waddy, both of Houston, Ira Waddy of Old Ocean, Billie Waddy of Minneapolis, Minn., and Atron Waddy of Savannah, Ga.; sisters, Merlin Wheelock of Dickinson, Willie Jean Harris of Houston and Bernice Thompson of Savannah, Ga.; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mary Duyka

Mary B. Duyka, age 87, of Wharton died Saturday, May 10, 2003, in a Houston hospital following a brief illness. She was born on Sept. 5, 1915, in Moulton, the daughter of the late Ignac Balajka and Marie Kubicek Balajka.

Mrs. Duyka had been a longtime resident of Wharton and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton. She was also a member of the Altar Society, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and the Holy Family Catholic Church Quilting Club. Mrs. Duyka enjoyed playing 42, gardening and baking kolaches. She married Rudolph Paul Duyka on June 20, 1939, in Wharton and he preceded her in death on Feb. 17, 1996. Mrs. Duyka was also preceded in death by four sisters. She worked as a medical records librarian for Outlar-Blair Clinic for 15 years.

A wake service was held at 7 p.m. Monday, May 12, 2003, at the Chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home with Deacon Alvin Matthys officiating. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2003, at Holy Family Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include her daughters and son-in-law, Debbie Leblanc of Houston and JoAnn and Robert Cliver of Tyler; sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Lynda Duyka of Sugar Land, Sam and Sherri Duyka of South Lake and Rudy and Billie Duyka of Marietta, Ga.; grandchildren, Timothy Duyka, Michelle Duyka Nunes, Larry Duyka Jr., Laurie Duyka Ervin, Landon Duyka, Jennifer Cliver, James Cliver, John Cliver and Lindsey Leblanc; great-grandchildren, Madison Nunes, Mason Nunes, Victoria Duyka, Morgan Duyka, Zachary Duyka and Travis Ervin.

Pallbearers were Larry Duyka Jr., Landon Duyka, Tim Duyka, James Cliver, John Paul Vasek and Jason Ervin.

Honorary Pallbearers were all of her grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to Holy Family Catholic Church Altar Society, 2011 Briar Lane, Wharton, Texas 77488.

Funeral services were under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.

Edith Kulhanek

Funeral services for Edith Ann Kulhanek, 70, of Wallis, were held Monday at Guardian Angel Catholic Church in Wallis with Rev. Richard Johnston officiating. Burial followed in Guardian Angel Cemetery in Wallis.

Mrs. Kulhanek died May 9, 2003, in Richmond. She was born in Wallis to Raymond and Emily Mikes Dirba.

She was reared in Wallis and attended school at Guardian Angel. Mrs. Kulhanek married Pete Kulhanek on May 7, 1951, in Wallis, and lived as a homemaker. She was a member of Guardian Angel Catholic Church, SPJST and KJZT, where she served as local secretary for many years.
Survivors include children, Judith Michulka and husband Stanley of East Bernard, Dennis and Rugenia Kulhanek of Wallis, Chris and Brenda Kulhanek of Sealy, David Kulhanek, Patrick Kulhanek, Mary Kulhanek and Theresa Kulhanek, all of Wallis; sister, Bernice Valicek; and four grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Emily Dirba; husband, Pete Kulhanek; infant children, John and Veronica; sister, Mildred McNabb; and brother-in-law, Orville McNabb.

Muriel Rountree

Muriel Christine Rountree, 79, of Wharton, and formerly of Burnet, was called to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Friday, May 9, 2003. She was born on April 23, 1924, in San Antonio, the daughter at the late Thomas C. Davis and Mildred Brient Davis. She was a also preceded in death by her brother, Wesley Davis.

Mrs. Rountree graduated from the University of Texas in 1945. She worked in several hospitals and at the State School in Austin as a laboratory and x-ray technologist. Mrs. Rountree later became an elementary and junior high teacher and also taught high school physics and chemistry. She retired in Burnet in 1984 and moved to Wharton in 1998 for health reasons. Mrs. Rountree attended First United Methodist Church in Wharton.

Survivors include her husband, Cecil Rountree of Burnet; daughter and son-in-law Rosemary and Nathan Gutowsky of East Bernard; sons and daughters-in-law Stan and Brandi Rountree of Burnet and Robert and Diane Rountree of Corpus Christi; brother, Tom Davis and his wife, Louise, of Tulsa, Okla.; sister Dulce Giovannetti of Eureka, Calif.; sister-in-law Jeanne Davis of Richardson, and numerous nephews and nieces. She will he dearly missed by the joy of her life — her grandchildren — Josh Gutowsky and his girlfriend, Dana Lockhart of East Bernard, Rebekah Gutowsky King and her husband Sam, of Lexington, Steve Rountree and Courtney Rountree of Austin, Christopher Rountree and Ben Rountree of Burnet and special friends — Bessie Gutowsky Ken Gutowsky, Molly Williams and her Morning Star Apartment friends.

It desiring, memorial gifts may be sent to Morning Star Apartments Activity Fund, Joyce Kubala, 1520 Barfield Road No. 801, Wharton, Texas 77488, to provide bingo prizes and other activities which she so enjoyed.

The family will gather in June to sing her favorite hymns, read from the Bible, share special memories and inter her ashes in “Ganny’s Garden” — built to honor her and her love of flowers and the outdoors.

“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, Jesus, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have eternal life” John 3:16.

Sledann West

Funeral services for Sledann West, 81, of Kendleton, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Wednesday, at Wesley Chapel A.M.E. Church in Kendleton with Rev. Lenora Dabney officiating. Burial will follow in Paradise Cemetery in Kendleton.

Mrs. West died May 8, 2003, at Hermann Southwest Memorial Hospital. She was born May 17, 1921, in Kendleton to Wess and Leola Rogers Roberson.

She was a lifelong resident of Kendleton and worked as a homemaker. Mrs. West was Methodist by faith.

Survivors include sons, Jed Arthur Hill, Mac Arthur Hill, Joe D. Hill, all of Kendleton, Dave H. West of Houston and Oliver West of Texarkana; brother, Lawrence Roberson of Kendleton; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by one brother, Abe Roberson.

Henry Witek

Funeral services for Henry Witek, 78, of Wharton, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, at Garmany & Carden Funeral Home in Rosenberg with Sherrell Speer officiating. Burial will follow in the Rosenberg City Cemetery.

Mr. Witek died May 11, 2003, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. He was born Dec. 7, 1924, in East Bernard to John and Olga Provasek Witek. He worked as a farmer.

Survivors include sisters, Lillie Sontag of Rosenberg, Viola Jalufka of South Houston, Judy Foster of Virginia, Evelyn Hanson of Clear Lake, Doris Milam of Missouri City and Ann Romano and husband, Walter, of Spring; numerous nieces and nephews.

Clemon Hearn

Funeral services for Clemon Hearn, 68, of Spanish Camp will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Sand Ridge Baptist Church with Rev. A.C. Gardner officiating. Burial will follow in Sand Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Thursday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Thursday.

Mr. Hearn died June 21, 2003, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. He was born June 30, 1934, in Egypt, to Earnest and Viola Brooks Hearn Sr.

Survivors include wife, Marion Bryant Hearn of Spanish Camp; daughters, Clara Jeanette Bluntson of Hungerford, Clarice Ward of Bay City and Mary Walker of Wharton; brothers, Earnest Hearn Jr. of Texas City, Richard Hearn of Illinois and Roosevelt Hearn of Eagle Lake; sisters, Georgia Lee Johnson and Mary Hearn, both of Illinois, Brenda Brown of Texas City and Doris Patterson of Houston; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Marjorie Wynn

Funeral services for Marjorie Reese Wynn, 92, of Tehuacana, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, at First United Methodist Church in Tehuacana with Rev. Brad Brittain, pastor, officiating, assisted by Rev. Billy Don Roberts, pastor of First Baptist Church in Tehuacana. Burial follows in Tehuacana Cemetery.

Mrs. Wynn was born March 13, 1911, in Tehuacana, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John T. Reese. Mr. and Mrs. William Reese, her grandparents, were early settlers of Tehuacana. Her grandfather was a stone mason and was instrumental in constructing Westminster College. She married Sam Wynn. Mrs. Wynn returned to Tehuacana in 1993 and was a graduate of Texas Women’s University and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Tehuacana.

Survivors include sons, Sam G. Wynn Jr. of Dallas, John T. Wynn of Egypt and William Reese Wynn of Mexia; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Larry Alaniz

Following cremation, memorial services for Hilario “Larry” Barrera Alaniz, 52, of Houston, will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating.

Mr. Alaniz died Sept. 6, 2003, in Wharton following a sudden illness. He was born on May 18, 1951, in Wharton, the son of Manuel and Josephine Barrera Alaniz.

Mr. Alaniz graduated from Wharton High School in 1969. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietname War. Mr. Alaniz married Hotensia Salazar on June 21, 1975, in Wharton. He was a teacher at Labay Junior High School in the Cypress Independent School District, where he taught special education students and was a volunteer in the mentor program. He was a longtime resident of Houston and a member of St. Elizabeth Anne Seton Catholic Church.

Survivors include his son, Matthew Alaniz of Houston; ex-wife, Hotensia Alaniz of Houston; mother, Josephine Alaniz of Wharton; and brothers, Charlie Alaniz of Wharton, Henry Alaniz of Houston and Luis Alaniz of Wharton. He was preceded in death by his father, Manuel Alaniz.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Larry Alaniz Scholarship Fund, which will be set up at a later date.
