Leona Boyd

Leona Inez New Boyd, 82, of Bay City died Dec. 25, 2002, at Matagorda Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Traford, Ala., to the late Jesse and Gertrude Quattlebaum New.

Mrs. Boyd was a member of the First Pentecostal Church, a longtime resident of Bay City and a former resident of Wharton.

Survivors include: daughters and sons-in-law: Julie Ann Prince of Georgia, Sandra Jo Pennington of Molton, Ala., Linda Sue and Frank Stains of Wharton and Betty Lou and Billy Black of Bay City; sons and daughters-in-law, Michael Lawrence Boyd and Billy Joe and Sherry Brown, all of Bay City; sisters and brothers-in-law, Merle Dean and Bud Askew of Wilburton, Okla., Wanda Nell and Billy Fansler of Grand Saline, Nan and Marvin Rogers, Elizabeth Ann and Kenny Brown and Virginia Louise and Stoney Burke, all of Bay City; brothers and sisters-in-law, Maurice Calvin and Florence New of Bay City and Billy Fred and Jean New of Grand Saline; 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, R.A. “Hoppy” Boyd; son, Jesse Leo Brown; and brothers, Joseph Edgar and Jesse Lewis New.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, 2002, at First Pentecostal Church with Rev. Marvin Moore and Rev. Charles Fisher officiating. Interment followed in Cedarvale Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Dustin and Justin Black, Keith Stains, Ricky, Matt and Tony Brown.

Arrangements were with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home in Bay City.

Mary Jones

Mary Marguerite McGilvary Jones of Wharton died Dec. 28, 2002, at Gulf Coast Medical Center.
She was born Dec. 27, 1911 in Jones County, Miss., to Wayne S. McGilvary and Etta Vashti Robertson McGilvary. Mrs. Jones married Eugene Perkins Jones of Lindale on Feb. 14, 1948, where they lived on their farm and raised cattle and enjoyed the fruits of the land. Mr. Jones passed away on April 5, 1984. While she never had children of her own, she embraced many, many, children over the years.

Mrs. Jones was Methodist by faith and was a member of United Methodist Church of Lindale. She spent the majority of her time after marriage working with the cattle and growing and canning vegetables. Mrs. Jones had a special passion for animals, family, friends, her rose garden and fishing.

Funeral services were held Dec. 31, 2002, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Don Storey officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Her survivors include: sister and brother-in-law, Alma Ruth and George Hodge of Wharton; brother and sisters-in-law Gaylon and Frances McGilvary of Smithville and Dorothy McGilvary of Onalaska, nieces, nephews, step-granddaughter, cousins and many friends.

Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by a step-son Travis Jones; one sister, Joyce Reagan; and four brothers, Edgar, Harold, John and Cyril McGilvary.

Pallbearers were Tommy Bowles, Tammy McGilvary, Allen Koonce, George Hodge Jr., Don Bruggman and Alec Mayfield.

Honorary pallbearers were Gene Barker, Lonnie Bowles, Harriet Bowles, Mildred Holcomb, Dick Null and Coy Smith.

Memorials may be made to Polycystic Kidney Foundation, 4901 Main Street Suite 200, Kansas City, Mo., 64112; or a charity of personal choice.

Funeral services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Lawrence Johse

Funeral services for Lawrence F. Johse, 80, of LaGrange, were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2002, at Koenig & Strickland Chapel in LaGrange with Rev. Suzanne Steves officiating. Burial followed at 1:30 p.m. in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Johse died Dec. 29, 2002, at Monument Hill Nursing Home in LaGrange. He was born July 3, 1922, in East Bernard to Charles and Meta Biehle Johse.

He married Ruth Opal Bennett in 1942 in Houston and she preceded him in death in 1995. Mr. Johse then married Bernice Kubos on Aug. 2, 1997. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in LaGrange. Mr. Johse worked as a farmer and rancher for many years and had been a tractor salesman in Bay City, El Campo and LaGrange. He was a member of the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II.

Survivors include wife, Bernice Johse of LaGrange; sons and daughters-in-law, Donald and Sharon Johse of Franklin and Jimmie and Valerie Johse of Pearland; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; step-children and their spouses, David Kubos of Warrenton, John and Tammy Kubos of LaGrange and Carolyn and Marvin Roberts of LaGrange; three step-grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law, J.B. and Liliana Johse of Wharton; several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife and his brother, Aubrey Johse.

If desiring, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church in LaGrange.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Koenig and Strickland Funeral Home in LaGrange.

Eleanor Roberts

Eleanor L. Roberts, age 84, of Sugar Land, died Saturday Dec. 28, 2002, at her residence following a brief illness. She was born on Feb. 26, 1918, in Gadsden, Ala., the daughter of the late Robert Latta Laverty and Daisy Alston Armistead Laverty.

Mrs. Roberts was a 1932 graduate of Thomas Jefferson High School in San Antonio. She married Boone Carlisle Roberts Jr. on May 6, 1936, in San Antonio. She was a former resident of Ballinger and a resident of Wharton from 1936 until December of 2000 before moving to Sugar Land. Mrs. Roberts was a homemaker and a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and Dames of the Magna Carta.

Funeral services were held 11 a.m. Tuesday Dec. 31, 2002, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church with Rev. L.P. “Hoss” Gwin officiating. Interment followed in Wharton City Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Boone Carlisle Roberts Jr. of Sugar Land; daughter, Mary E. Godfrey and husband, Mark, of Sugar Land; son, Lyle Roberts and wife, Joyce, of Galveston; sister, Elizabeth Pawkett of San Antonio; brother, Robert Laverty of Versailles, France; grandchildren, Kristin Louise Godfrey, Matthew Mark Godfrey, Anne Laverty Boon and Carly Paige Roberts. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Day Roberts, on March 5, 1953; and by a sister, Margaret Hardin.

Pallbearers were George Brady, Matthew Godfrey, Rivers Vineyard, Bob Vineyard, Jim Gilbert and Clyde Jones.

Honorary pallbearers were Dick George and Dr. H.M. Northington.

Latee Willis

Funeral services for Latee Laverne Willis, 74, of Brazoria, will be held at noon Thursday at St. James Baptist Church with Rev. David Williams officiating. Burial will follow in Peaceful Rest Cemetery in Brazoria. Visitation will be from 1-9 p.m. today at Dixon Funeral Home in Brazoria.

Mrs. Willis died Dec. 29, 2002, at Kindred Hospital in Houston.

Survivors include husband, Rev. B.B. Willis of Brazoria; brother, Percy C. Thomas of San Antonio; sister, Bernice Williams of West Columbia; one grandson, numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Bruno Witwiski

Bruno Tony Witwiski, age 82, of Wharton, died Dec. 1, 2002, at his residence in Wharton. He was born Jan. 17, 1920, in Bremond, the son of the late Jake and Albina Patryla Witwiski.

Mr. Witwiski was a longtime resident of Houston and worked as a machinist for Wilson Manufacturing for 20 years prior to retiring in 1982. Following his retirement he moved to Wharton. He was Catholic by faith.

Survivors include sons, Donnie Witwiski of Wharton and Jimmy Witwiski of Dripping Springs; sister, Connie Williamson of Katy; and four grandchildren; he was preceded in death by a sister and a brother.

Genoveva Aguilar

Funeral services for Genoveva R. Aguilar, 98, of Houston, were held Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Houston. Rosary services were held Thursday at Crespo Funeral Home Navigation Chapel in Houston.

Mrs. Aguilar died Feb. 10, 2003, at her residence. She was born Dec. 26, 1904, to the late Andres and Gabriela Rodriguez.

Survivors include her children and their spouses, Janie and Lalo, Jess and Claudia, Consuelo and Gilberto, Paul and Elvira, Andres, Arturo, Armando, Fred and Lee and Julio; daughter-in-law, Josephine; son-in-law, Carlos; 28 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren, 21 great-great-grandchildren and their families.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Andres and Gabriela Rodriguez; her brothers and sisters; her husband of 42 years, Pedro; her children, Genoveva, Pedro “Piran”, Adela, Santiago, Consuelo and Fernando; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild; a nephew, Felix Gonzalez and a niece, Anita Martinez, whom she raised.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association or a charity of personal choice.

Fernando Rodriguez

Funeral services for Fernando R. Rodriguez, 80, of Wharton, are pending at Wharton Funeral Home.
Mr. Rodriguez died Feb. 12, at his residence.

Robert Brast

Funeral services for Robert Lee Brast Sr., 73, of Wharton, will be held 10 a.m. today, Saturday, at Peace Tabernacle United Pentecostal Church with Rev. Charles Fisher officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Brast died April 24, 2003, at Gulf Coast Medical Center after an extended illness. He was born on April 9, 1930, in Cat Springs, the son of the late Martha Krause Brast and Herman Adolph Brast.
He attended school in the Sealy school district. Mr. Brast served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He managed a rice farm in the Lane City area for Bollinger Brothers from 1954 through 1967. Mr. Brast later worked as a supervisor and tool pusher for various oil service firms prior to retiring in 2000. He married Virgie Jean Clark in 1954 and she preceded him in death in March of 1963. Mr. Brast married Monty Mae Hudspeth on March 18, 1967, in Wharton. He was a former resident of Lane City and had resided in Wharton since 1963. Mr. Brast was a member of Peace Tabernacle United Pentecostal Church.

Survivors include wife, Monty Brast of Wharton; sons and daughter-in-law, Robert “Bud” Brast Jr. of Angleton and Russell Earl and Christey Brast of Wharton; sister, Annie May Schmidt of Eagle Lake; and brother, Leroy Gus Brast of Sealy.

If desiring, memorials may be made to Peace Tabernacle United Pentecostal Church, 1416 N. Alabama Road, Wharton, Texas 77488.

Funeral services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Lou Godsey

Funeral services for Lou Alice Godsey, 83, of Wharton, will be held at 1 p.m. today, Saturday, at New Prosperity Baptist Church with Rev. Ruiel Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Camp Zion Cemetery.

Mrs. Godsey died April 22, 2003, at Avalon Place nursing home. She was born Jan. 5, 1920, in Wharton.

She was a lifelong resident of Wharton and worked as a restaurant cook. Mrs. Godsey was Baptist by faith.

Survivors include son, Ruiel Taylor Jr. of Wharton; sister, Leona Godsey of Houston; brothers, Cornell Godsey of Egypt and Donnell Godsey of Houston; six grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Pierce Boone Funeral Home.

MaKayla Holloway

Funeral services for infant MaKayla LeeShay Holloway of El Campo were held Friday at Sovereignty Missionary Baptist Church with Pastor Carl Baylor officiating. Burial followed in El Campo City Cemetery.

She died April 21, 2003, at Methodist Hospital in Sugar Land. MaKayla is the daughter of Sammie Holloway Jr. and Gala McClain.

Survivors include parents, Sammie Holloway Jr. and Gala McClain; sisters, DeAndra Flagg, Daijah Holloway and Amardi Holloway.

Samuel Robinson

Funeral services for Samuel James Robinson Sr., 74 of El Campo, will be held at 1 p.m. today, Saturday, at First Christian Church in El Campo with Rev. Robert Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in El Campo Community Cemetery.

Mr. Robinson died April 22, 2003, at Memorial Hermann Hospital. He was born May 22, 1928, in El Campo to Homer and Estell Mayberry Robinson.

He was a lifelong resident of El Campo and was a night club owner. Mr. Robinson was a member of American Legion Post No. 251. He was Baptist by faith.

Survivors include daughters, Theresa Robinson of Rosenberg, Ladonna Ward of Wharton, Novella Roberson, Dorothy Washington, Pearl Robinson and Sharon Owens, all of El Campo; sons, Billy Ray Robinson of Cibilo, Kenneth Robinson of Lubbock, Samuel Robinson Jr., Robert Greeley and Jamal Robinson, all of El Camp; step-son, Maurice Neal of Ward; brothers, Homer Robinson Jr. of Los Angeles, Calif.; 43 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Pierce Boone Funeral Home.

William Shorter

Funeral services for William Shorter Jr., 56, of Garwood, were held Thursday at Mount Gilead Baptist Church in Egypt. Burial followed in Sand Ridge Cemetery.

Mr. Shorter died April 19, 2003, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. He was born Oct. 31, 1946, in Bonus to William and Nodene Anderson Shorter Sr.

He was a lifelong resident of Wharton County and was a rice farmer. Mr. Shorter was Baptist by faith.

Survivors include daughter, Lafonda Woodard of Wharton; step-daughters, Karen Washington and Linda White, both of Wharton, and Joyce Woodard of Sugar Land; sisters, Georgia M. Abbott of Kendleton, Leola Watson of Needville, Jewel Hearn and Margaret Cook, both of Sand Ridge, Carrie Williams of Elm Grove and Ruthie Mae Hunter of Houston; brothers, Leroy Shorter of Matthews, Hollis James Shorter of El Campo, Walter Shorter of Needville and Austin Shorter of El Campo; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Dan and Leonard Shorter.
