H.R. Bass

Memoriall services for H. R. Bass, 57, of Wharton, will be held 4 p.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church of Wharton with Rev. Debbie Cenko officiating. Graveside services and interment will be held 2 p.m. Thursday at Resthaven Cemetery in Shawnee, Okla., with Rev. J. Clifton Briscoe officiating.

Mr. Bass died Oct. 16, 2004, in a Houston hospital after an extended illness. He was born on Sept. 17, 1947, in Shawnee, Okla., the son of Harvey Murl Bass and Delores Bryce Bass.

He was reared in Oklahoma and following graduation from high school he received his bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma Baptist University and later his MBA from Oklahoma University. Mr. Bass served in the U.S. Army as a payroll officer in Fort Dix, N.J., until his honorable discharge. He was a former Oklahoma State Bank Examiner, restaurant owner and radio station manager in Oklahoma City, Galveston, Wharton, Palestine and Bay City. Most recently Mr. Bass was the owner of his advertising agency, Texas Media and Production Company. He was in the process of making his first movie, “No Place But Texas,” with Chalk Peak Productions, as a partner of the company and producer and director of the movie. Mr. Bass married Regena Louise Ham on July 4, 1992, in New Orleans, La. He was a 20-year resident of Wharton and a former resident of Oklahoma and Galveston. Mr. Bass was an elder and member of First Presbyterian Church of Wharton.

Survivors include wife, Regena Bass of Wharton; daughters, Lacy Squires of Wharton and Shellie McClary of Oklahoma City, Okla.; parents, Harvey and Delores Bass of Shawnee, Okla.; and three grandchildren.

Dora Krag

Dora Marie Krag, age 80, of Wharton, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, in a Wharton nursing home following an extended illness. She was born on March 22, 1924, in Austin, the daughter of the late Christian Harton and Emma Wolff Harton.

Mrs. Krag had been a resident of Wharton since 1975 and was a former resident of Danevang and Yoakum. She was a 1942 graduate of El Campo High School. Mrs. King married Benedict David Krag on Dec. 11, 1942, in San Antonio. She was a homemaker and worked as an Avon representative for 15 years until her retirement in 1984. Mrs. King was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wharton and the Ladies Aid Society.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Oct. 18, 2004, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Wharton with Pastor Barry Sharp officiating. Graveside services and burial followed at the Danevang Cemetery in Danevang.

Survivors include her husband, Benedict Krag of Wharton; daughters, Grace Kosloski and husband, Raymond, of Sandy, Utah, and Sharon Sophia Krag of Baltimore, Md.; grandchildren, Jason Kosloski and Sophia Kosloski. She was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers.

Pallbearers were Alfred Wind, Irvin Wind, Vernon Ullmann, Wilbur Hansen, Jim Harton, and Fred Martin.

Honorary pallbearer was Ralph Blackman.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to the Lupus Foundation of America, 3730 Kirby, Suite 720, Houston, TX 77098-3927.

Funeral services were under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.

Lewis Slusser

Lewis Hardy “Buba” Slusser, age 74, of Kilgore and former resident of Wharton, peacefully ended his courageous battle with cancer on Oct. 17, 2004. Mr. Slusser was born in Smackover, Ark., on Nov. 16, 1929, the second of 10 children born to Joseph Andrew and Pearl Hardy Slusser. His father soon began his career with Sinclair Oil Company and the family moved to Kilgore, where he grew up.

After high school, he joined the U.S. Air Force in 1947. Mr. Slusser was discharged in 1949 and returned home to attend Kilgore Junior College. Soon thereafter, he began work in the oil drilling industry, a distinguished career that lasted more than 30 years. Mr. Slusser spent most of his time working in deep sea drilling and exploration throughout the world including long-term assignments in the Middle East, North Africa, Singapore, Nigeria, and South America. He immensely enjoyed his work and made many lasting friendships. Upon retirement Mr. Slusser lived in Austin until 2000 when he moved home to Kilgore.

He loved to work in his garden where he always grew enough to feed a small village, in all things in life, if a little bit was good, then a whole lot was a whole lot better. Mr. Slusser was a very kind, compassionate and generous man, helping people wherever he went. He enjoyed a gifted sense of humor and shared it worldwide. Mrs. Slusser loved his family, quick wit, making people laugh and everything about the UT Longhorns. He will be remembered for the joy he had for life and the courage he showed in death.

Mr. Slusser was a proud and loving son, brother, husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; his daughters, Christy Washburn and her husband Stephen, Cathy Qualls and her husband, Robert; step-children, Michelle Lane and husband, John, and Gary Siddons; grandchildren, Joseph and Tyra Tydlacka, Kativa Levrier, Will Washburn, Ty Qualls, and Matthew and Jessica Lane; great-granddaughters, Shelby Daughn and Josie Tydlacka; great-grandson, Michael Carlisle; mother, Pearl Slusser; sisters, Paula Clary, Ruth Craver, and Connie Bielfeldt; and brothers, Ronnie, Johnnie and Andy. He was preceded in death by his father, his beloved son, Mark; sister, Josephine Massey and brothers, Joseph II and Robert.

His family wishes to acknowledge with heartfelt gratitude the kindness and support given by his friends and medical providers, including Dr. Bernard Taylor, Dr. Rama Koya, Dr. Ted Slade, LifeCare Hospice, all of Longview, and the physicians and staff at Duke University Brain Tumor Center.

never be filled, our lives have been richly blessed by the life that he led and the man that he was.”

A celebration of his life was held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, in the Chapel of Rader Funeral Home, 16 17 Judson Road in Longview. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to a charity of personal choice.

Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.

Stanley Svec

Following cremation, graveside services and burial for Stanley Adolph Svec, 60, of Hungerford, will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the National Cemetery in East Bernard with Pastor Anthony Ford officiating.

Mr. Svec died Friday Oct. 15, 2004, following an extended illness. He was born on Dec. 1, 1943, in Wharton County, the son of the late Charlie Svec and Albina Zahradnik Svec.

He was a lifelong resident of Hungerford and was Catholic by faith. He worked as a farm laborer.
Survivors include daughters Mary Svec of Hungerford and Brenda Sanchez of Wallis; sons, Stanley Southwood and Daniel Southwood, both of Wharton, and Henry Southwood of Meade, Kan.; step-son, David Wingo of Wharton; sister, Henrietta Eden of Rosenberg; brothers, Charles Svec of Boling and Jim Svec of Snook; and 14 grandchildren.

Steve Vasek

Steve Vasek, age 75, of Bay City, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, in a Bay City nursing home following an extended illness. He was born on Dec. 26, 1928, in Wharton, the son of the late August Vasek and Mary Shrubar Vasek.

Mr. Vasek had been a resident of Matagorda County since 1960 and was a former resident of Wharton County. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Wadsworth. He worked with Texasgulf Sulphur and Elf Aquitaine for 30 plus years until his retirement in 1987. After his retirement he worked as a carpenter.

A rosary will be recited at 2 p.m. today, Tuesday, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford and a funeral mass follows at 2:30 p.m. with Rev. Henry Rachunek officiating. Burial follows in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Valerie and Marty Hardy of Bellville, Suzanne and Mike Talasek of Wadsworth and Lisa and James Fuqua of Quanah; sons and daughters-in-law, Steve and Lisa Vasek of Freeport, Charles and Nancy Vasek and Chris and Sheryl Vasek, all of Wadsworth; sisters, Sister George Vasek of Incarnate Word Convent in Victoria and Frances Volding of Bedford; brother, John Vasek of China Springs; 16 grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive.

Pallbearers are Chris Talasek, Brad Vasek, Justin Hardy, Jared Hardy, Stephen Vasek, Jr., Ricky OíNeal, Mark Vasek and Paul Vasek.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to St. John’s Catholic Church, P.O. Box 121, Hungerford, TX 77448.

Funeral services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Troy Villarreal

Troy Villarreal, age 34, of Wharton died Friday, Oct. 15, 2004, at his residence following a sudden illness. He was born on March 18, 1970, in Wharton, the son of Israel Villarreal and Virginia Miniel Villarreal.

Mr. Villarreal had been a lifelong resident of Wharton and was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Wharton. He worked as a machine operator for Albis Machine Shop in Rosenberg. He graduated from Wharton High School in 1988 and enjoyed all types of sport activities.

A rosary was recited Monday evening, Oct. 18, 2004, at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home and a funeral mass will held at 10 a.m. today, Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Wharton with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial follows in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include his daughters, Layla Guadalupe Villarreal and Aryana Virginia Villarreal, both of Rosenberg; parents, Israel and Virginia Villarreal of Wharton; sisters and brothers-in-law, Monica and David Benavidez of Richmond and Sonya and Rick Diaz of Sugar Land; grandmother, Trinidad Villarreal of Wharton; great-aunt, Theodora Torres of Wharton; two nieces, one nephew and several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.

Pallbearers are Israel Villarreal, Johnny Villarreal, Jason Villarreal, Manuel Villarreal II, Manuel Villarreal III, Robert Mata Jr. and Rudy Villarreal.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family request memorials to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 506 S. East Avenue, Wharton, TX 77488.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Beatrice Brown

Funeral services for Beatrice “B.B.” Brown, 72, of Temple and formerly of Hungerford, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, at Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Sorrel community. Burial will follow in Bowden Cemetery.

Mrs. Brown died Oct. 7, 2004, at Scott and White Memorial Hospital in Temple after a sudden illness. She was born Dec. 23, 1931, in Hungerford to Johnny and Arnetha McKinney Gordon.
She worked as a nurse’s aide in Temple area hospitals.

Survivors include son, Demetrius Bennett of Temple; sisters, Johnnie Ockerberry of Killeen, Ada Mae Papillion of San Antonio and Jearlean Richardson of Hungerford; brothers, Frank Gordon of Wharton and Shed Gordon of Galveston.

Dorothy Eppes

Dorothy Belle Armstrong Fraley Eppes, age 90, of Wharton, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 2004, in Wharton. She was born on Sept. 30, 1914, in Wharton, the daughter of the late John Crosby Armstrong and Minnie Jane Davis Armstrong.

Mrs. Eppes was a lifelong resident of Wharton and a member of the First Baptist Church. She was a 1933 graduate of Wharton High School and later attended business school in Houston. She was employed as an office clerk for Houston Light and Power Company for 25 years until her retirement in 1979. Mrs. Eppes married Morris Albert Fraley Sr. on March 16, 1939, in Wharton and he preceded her in death on Dec. 4, 1964. She later met and married Ed Eppes on Oct. 18, 1987, in Wharton.

She was a member of both the Ricebelt and Go Slow Sams Clubs and the WMU. Mrs. Eppes was a former assistant Girl Scout Leader of Troop No. 1, former Red Cross swimming instructor and former member of the Loners on Wheels. She loved to travel and was very proud of being a master swimmer, having won and placed in many swimming events throughout her life.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, at First Baptist Church in Wharton with Rev. Mack Mathis officiating. Interment will follow in the Wharton City Cemetery. Visitation hours will be from 9 a.m, until 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 16, at the Wharton Funeral Home and her family will be greeting friends at the Funeral Home from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m.

Survivors include her husband, Ed Eppes of Wharton; daughters, Jane Lange Mahavier and husband, David H., of Spring and Mary Louise Tesch of Pasadena; sons, Morris A. Fraley Jr. and wife, Sarah, of Houston, and John Henry Fraley of Wharton; step-daughter, Laila Eppes of Austin; step-sons, H.E. Eppes Jr. and wife, Susan, of Jersey Village, and Bill Eppes and wife, April, of East Bernard; grandchildren, Deborah Jones and husband, David; Jay Alan Mahavier; Michele Creech and husband, Jonathan; Danny Eppes; Dacia King and husband, Jason; Amanda West and husband, Keith; and Emily Eppes; great-grandchildren, Nathan Jones, Naomi Creech, Benjamin Creech, Lydia Creech, Caleb Creech, Josiah Creech, Elisabeth Creech, Skyler King, Brody King, Sean-Michael King and Braven West.

Mrs. Eppes was preceded in death by her sisters, Nell Kimball, Minnie Maude Gray, Wilma Bledsoe, Jean Cunningham and by brothers, Raymond, Davis, Walter and Dennis Armstrong.

Pallbearers are Morris A. Fraley Jr., John Henry Fraley, David Jones, H.E. Eppes Jr., Bill Eppes, Jay Mahavier and Danny Eppes.

Aneta Brown

Funeral services for Aneta Brown, 72, of Glen Flora, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at New Prosperity-East Gate Baptist Church with Rev. R. Taylor Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Scott Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.

Mrs. Brown died Oct. 12, 2004, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital in Houston. She was born July 28, 1932, in Glen Flora to Oscar and Ola Scott Jones.

Survivors include sons, Victor Brown of Houston, Benny Brown of Katy and Ernie Brown of Glen Flora; daughters, Marilyn Smith, Ola Ards, Doris Brown, Rosa Brown and Joyce Brown, all of Houston; sister, Cora B. Johnson of Houston; 18 grandchildren and 21 great-great-grandchildren.

Alfonce Cerny

Alfonce Victor Cerny Sr., 79, of EL Campo, died Monday, Nov. 1, 2004. He was born Jan. 30, 1925, at home in Crescent to Anton and Frances Baklik Cerny. He was united in marriage to Rose Orsak in 1947.

Survivors include his daughter Shirley Krenek and husband Don of Wallis; sons, Clarence “Bouncie” and wife, Robbi, of Eagle Lake, Larry and wife, Susan, of El Campo, Kenneth and wife, Denise, of Egypt, Al and wife, Cynthia, of El Campo; grandchildren, Chad Krenek and wife, Nina, Nathan Krenek and wife, Tracey, Clay Cerny and wife, Jody, Cody Cerny and wife, Bonnie, Cliff Cerny, Keith Cerny and wife, Kristie, Jeffery Cerny and fiancée Brandi Minks, Jenna Cerny, Ericka Cerny, Blair Cerny and Chelsey Cerny; step- grandchildren, Victoria and Cody Stansberry, and great-grandsons, Cole Krenek, Chance Cerny and Kolin Cerny, all his pride and joy. Surviving siblings include his brothers, Anton Jr. and wife, Georgie, of Sealy, Alvin and wife, Gladys, of El Campo; sisters, Lillian McKee of Wharton, Ella Cervenka of El Campo, Irene Lutringer of El Campo, and Margie Kutach and husband, Eugene, of West Columbia; and numerous nephews and nieces.
He was a farmer retiring in 1988 and a member of ST. Philip Catholic Church and VFW.

Visitation begins at 11 a.m. today, Tuesday, at Triska Funeral Home. A Rosary was held today at 7:30 p.m. at Triska Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at St. Philip Catholic Church with Rev. Gary Janak officiating. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Memorial Park with military honors under the auspices of the American Legion Post No. 251.

Pallbearers are his eight grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers are his three granddaughters, step-grandchildren, and his dear friend and caregiver, Irene Sedlock.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife. Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, El Campo VFW or Hospice Support, Inc.
