Jesse Hughes

Jesse Hughes went home to be with the Lord Aug. 9, 2003. When people met Mr. Hughes, they first noticed his hands. They were huge with knuckles stiffened by time and palms that felt like well-worn leather. You knew the measure of the man with one look at his hands.
Those hands plowed cotton fields, hammered railroad ties, and delivered ice throughout Wharton county. They were the hands of a man who worked tirelessly to provide for his children, and he was determined that his four babies have the opportunities denied him.

Jesse Hughes was born Nov. 13, 1906, in Boling, where his parents, Mamie and Cornelius Edwards, lovingly raised him, his brother, Louis Hughes, and sister, Alberta Hughes.

He could only complete the eighth grade because the school for African-American children in Boling went no further. Completing his education would have meant walking 11 miles to Wharton.
And so it was that Jesse Hughes would be destined to rely on the strength of his hands and the force of his character to assure his family would always have food to eat, clothing to wear, and a place to call home. “Use what you got,” was his motto. And he did just that.

By the time he sent his four children to college, his hands were calloused and hardened, but his eyes always softened with pride when he spoke of the fact that his children had realized his dream deferred.

Jesse Hughes loved the Lord. And he expressed that love through his work at Shiloh Baptist Church in Boling. He served as church secretary for 45 years, Sunday School superintendent for more than 50 years, and a deacon for more than 60 years.

It was there that with hands clasped in prayer he showed all who knew him that his hand was guided by the hand of God.

He married Elizabeth Ann Franklin on Jan. 24, 1932, and together they had four children: Alberta Hughes of Iago, Jesse Hughes Jr. of Houston, Clarence Hughes, who is deceased, and Mamie Dewberry of Lubbock. Two daughters-in-law, a son-in-law, 10 grandchildren, seven greatgrandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren will also cherish his memory.

Funeral service for Jesse Hughes will be held Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, at 11 a.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church in Boling. And on this day we, as a family, celebrate because the hands that guided us for decades now hold that of his wife who preceded him in death. Heaven is made richer by their presence. And for that we give thanks to a good and gracious God.
