Alice Kopp

PRIDDY -- Funeral services for Alice Kopp, 95, of Priddy, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Dec. 23 at Zion Lutheran Church with Pastor Don Kingman officiating. Interment will follow in I. O. O. F. Cemetery in Hamilton under the direction of Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Kopp died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, at Forest Ridge Care Center in Hamilton.

Mrs. Kopp was born on Feb. 15, 1907, in Hamilton, to Rudolph Limmer and Bertha Kelm. She married Robert R. Rost on Aug. 10, 1926. She later married Herman K. Kopp on Dec. 8, 1956. She was a homemaker and a member of Zion Lutheran Church. She had lived in Priddy since 1956.

Survivors include daughter, Wynell McGalliard of Pass Christian, Miss.; stepson, Herman Kopp, Jr., of Priddy; stepdaughter, Jo Ann Jeske of Arlington; daughter-in-law, Ruby Rost of Richmond, Va.; seven grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Betty Joy Brown

Memorial services for Betty Joy Brown, 68, of Brownwood, formerly of Shoreacres, will be held at 11 a.m. at the Lake Brownwood United Methodist Church on Saturday, Dec. 21. Interment will be held in LaPorte following a service on Monday, Dec. 23 at the Paul U. Lee-La Porte Funeral Home. Local arrangements under the direction of Davis-Morris Funeral Home.

Mrs. Brown was born on April 26, 1934, in Houston, to Lorena Chambers Todd and Jewell Lightfoot Todd. She married William A. Brown, Sr., on June 8, 1972 in Houston.

Survivors include her husband, William A. Brown, Sr., of Brownwood; three sons, Rod V. Turner and wife, Patty, of Richmond, Mack A. Turner and wife, Tammie, of Linchburg, Va., and William Brown, Jr., and wife, Amy, of Webster; six grandchildren; one sister, Jeane Cullen of Diggs, Idaho; and several nieces and nephews.

Lynda Elaine Reid Clarke

Funeral services for Lynda Elaine Reid Clarke, 55, of Brownwood, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21 at Netherton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. L. R. Blackstock officiating. Cremation will follow under the direction of Netherton Funeral Home.

Ms. Clarke died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at a local nursing home.

Ms. Clarke was born on Sept. 8, 1947, in Wichita Falls. She had been a resident of Brownwood since 1992, moving from El Paso. Prior to her illness, she worked as a Certified Nurses Aide.

Survivors include two sons, Joe Cook of Brownwood and Gary Telles of El Paso; parents, Kelly and Helen Reid of Brownwood; and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Tony Telles; grandmother, Ora Lee Reid; and a grandfather, A. L. Reid.

Bill Jordan

LAKE BROWNWOOD -- Bill Jordan, age 61, of Lake Brownwood, Texas, died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at his home.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21 at Fairview Cemetery in Grosvenor with Reverend Charlie Fortenberry officiating. Heartland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 20 at Heartland Funeral Home.

Mr. Jordan was born February 23, 1941, in Brookhaven, Miss., the son of William P. and Geneva White Jordan. He was the owner and operator of Bill's Service Center at Lake Brownwood. He served in the United States Army in France and was recalled during the Bay of Pigs; he was a demolitions expert. He was the founder and president of the Tuesday night PTA. He was a former Lake Brownwood volunteer fireman. He founded the Lake Brownwood Car Show which funded the Lake Brownwood Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed cooking for many area car shows. He had lived at Lake Brownwood since 1979. The family will receive friends at Bill's Service Center after services.

Survivors include mother, Geneva Deckert of Odessa; son, Billy Jordan and wife, Bobbie, of Grapevine; daughter, Lee Ellen Preece of Watauga; brother, Brother Ray Deckert of Odessa; sisters, Rose Doris and Linda; grandchildren, Brendon Preece, David, Cody, and Logan Jordan; special loved one and friend, April Hiroms of Lake Brownwood; former spouse, Barbara Jordan of Watauga; a bird, Jada; a cat, Gato; and many close friends and PTA members.

He was preceded in death by his father and a sister, Frances Ray.

M. R. (Bud) Simmons

COLEMAN -- Funeral services for M. R. (Bud) Simmons, 86, of Coleman, will be held at 2:30 p.m. today at First Baptist Church of Santa Anna with the Rev. Raymond Jones, Rev. John Stanislaw and Sam Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in the Santa Anna Cemetery under the direction of Henderson Funeral Home.

Mr. Simmons died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at the Coleman Care Center.

Mr. Simmons was born on March 19, 1916, in Mangum, Okla., to the late Ed Martin and Gertrude Maloney Simmons. He was raised in Mangum, where he attended school. He married Laverne Lackey on June 27, 1934, in Coleman. They were married 53 years. She preceded him in death in 1987. On Nov. 18, 1988, he married Ernestine Keeney in Snyder. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Santa Anna and the Santa Anna Mountain Masonic Lodge. He served in law enforcement until his retirement.

Survivors include his wife, Ernestine Simmons of Coleman; daughter, Shirley Crawford of Lampassas; three sons, Donnie Simmons of Windom, Pete Simmons of McKinney, and Terry Simmons of Dallas; two stepdaughters, Joyce White of Early and Loyce Conway of Leavenworth, Kan.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Reta Joyce Simmons in 1963.

Alma Oglesby

Services for Alma Oglesby, 87, of Brownwood, are currently pending with Davis-Morris Funeral Home.

Mrs. Oglesby died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002.

Ethel O. Fortson

Funeral services for Ethel O. Fortson, 89, of Brownwood, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21 at the Davis-Morris Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Allen officiating. Interment will follow in the Cedar Point Cemetery under the direction of Davis-Morris Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.

Mrs. Fortson died Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2002, in Brownwood.

Mrs. Fortson was born on March 18, 1913, in Eastland County, one of 13 children born to Issac and Mary Cox Underwood. She married James Vardoman Forston in Eastland. She was a homemaker and a member of the Barber Home Demonstration Club for many years. She lived most of her life in Brownwood and was a member of Coggin Avenue Baptist Church.

Survivors include daughters, Louise Fortson Schleicher and Dorothy Manning and husband, Curtis, all of Brownwood; son, Odell Fortson and wife, Sherry, of Corsicana; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by husband, James Vardemon Fortson; parents, Issac and Mary Cox Underwood; and 12 brothers and sisters.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Ona Sisk Bruce

Ona Sisk Bruce, age 93, passed away Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, in Katy. She was born to N. B. and Lou Ellen Sisk. She attended Trinity University, The University of Texas and was an elementary school teacher until her marriage to William A. Bruce on Aug. 10, 1934. Mrs. Bruce was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church and had a Woman's Missionary Society, Women's Society of Christian Service and United Methodist Women for more than 60 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Brownwood for over 30 years.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Rita Beth and Howard I. Black of Katy; three grandsons, Richard Black of Humble, Stephen Black of Katy, and Michael Black of Pasadena; and seven great-granddaughters, Ashley, Shelby, Breann, Emily, Caroline, Caitlin and Audry. Ona was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, William A. Bruce, in 1998.

Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19 at Bethel Cemetery with Reverend Elmer Glazener officiating.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18 at Boze-Mitchell-McKibbin Funeral Home.

Arrangements are under the direction of Boze-Mitchell-McKibbin Funeral Home.

Howard Sikes

BANGS -- Funeral services for Howard Sikes, 90, of Bangs, will be held at 2 p.m. today at Bangs First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ryan Kiblinger officiating. Interment will be in Bangs Cemetery under the direction of Davis-Morris Funeral Home.

Mr. Sikes died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, at Twilight Nursing Home in Bangs.

Mr. Sikes was born on Aug. 3, 1912, in Bangs. He married Elinor Miller in Bangs on Dec. 15, 1933. He was a stock farmer and a lifetime resident of Bangs. He was a member of the Bangs First United Methodist Church and was associated with the Bangs Cemetery Association for many years. He was a member of the Lions Club and a Mason.

Survivors include daughter, Pat Spivey of Bangs; son, Bob Sikes and wife, Charlotte, of Bangs; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a brother, Lonnie Sikes of Bangs.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elinor Sikes, in 1998; a son, Tommy Sikes; a grandson, Danny Spivey; his parents, E. B. and Viola Reagor Sikes; and seven brothers and sisters.

Ann Gober

EARLY -- Funeral services for Ann Gober, 70, of Early, will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21 in the Calvary Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Eastlawn Memorial Park in Early. Family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight at Davis-Morris Funeral Home. Mrs. Gober passed away Wednesday at her home.

She was born in Swenson, Texas, to Eric and Lola White Ward. After living in Carlsbad, N. M., and San Angelo, Texas, she moved to Brownwood to continue her advancement with GTE. Ann and Ken Gober were married in Brownwood, Texas, on May 25, 1974. Ann retired from GTE after 32 years of service with the company. She and Ken became successful business partners with multiple businesses in the Brownwood area. She was a respected member of the American Business Women's Association. Ann and Ken have been longtime members of the Calvary Baptist Church in Brownwood.

Mrs. Gober was preceded in death by her grandson, Ronnie Cartwright; her parents, Eric and Lola White Ward; two brothers, James and Bill Ward; and her sister, Aileen Lyle.

She is survived by her husband, Ken Gober of Early; daughter, Toni Cartwright of Brownwood; son, Larry Scott and wife, Debra, of Blanket; son, Doug Scott of Blanket; daughter, Susan Rumfield and husband, Steve, of Early; sons, Kirk and Kent Gober of Brownwood. She is survived by 13 grandchildren: Royce Cartwright, Laura Goodall and husband, Russ, Lindsey Scott, Keisha Daniels and her husband, Joe, Kendal Gober, Micki Roach, Megan Elaine Scott, Leslie Rumfield, Chelsea Scott, Stevi Rumfield, Kellie Scott, Kelsey Gober and Joey Gober. Also surviving are seven great-grandchildren:Austen Cartwright,Jason Cartwright,Hailee Cartwright,Ariana Cartwright, Alyce Goodall, Britney Daniels and Cameron Goodall. She also has a sister, Margaret Jones and her husband, Troy, of Lubbock and a brother, W. P. Ward and his wife, Joker, of Denver City, Texas, and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family request memorials be made to the Girling Hospice program, 1423 Coggin Ave., Brownwood, TX, 76801.

Alec Van McGinnis

DE LEON -- Graveside services for Alec Van McGinnis, 81, of De Leon, were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 19 at Downing Cemetery with Kris Groda officiating. Interment followed under the direction of Nowlin Funeral Home.

Mr. McGinnis died Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002, in De Leon.

Mr. McGinnis was born on July 10, 1921, in Comanche County, to the late James McGinnis and the late Mamie Logan McGinnis. He married Teddy Lucille Loudermilk McGinnis in Downing. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army and a lifelong resident of Comanche County. He was a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include daughter, Sarah Layman of Abilene; sister, Marie Bell of Hagerstown, Md.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Teddy McGinnis; parents, James McGinnis and Mamie McGinnis; brothers, Joe McGinnis and Babe McGinnis; and sisters, Agnes McGinnis and Dorthy Davis.

Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Barney Martin

COLEMAN -- Memorial services for Barney Martin, 29, of Coleman, will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21 at the Ray E. Martin house at SH 206 FM 2806 near Burkett with the Rev. Jeff Robinett officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at Stevens Funeral Home.

Mr. Martin died Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002, at Harris Methodist Hospital in Ft. Worth.

Mr. Martin was born on June 10, 1973, in Coleman, the son of the late James Perrie and Brenda Martin. He grew up in Coleman and graduated from Panther Creek High School in 1991. He attended Tarleton State University in Stephenville. He had worked in Weatherford for the past several years as a computer technician for Crown Valley Development Corporation. He was a member of the United Christian and Presbyterian Church in Coleman.

Survivors include his mother, Brenda Martin of Coleman; stepfather, Wayne Forbess of Brownwood; sisters, Jamey Bowles Hamrah of Grapevine and Candy Bowles Herring of South Lake; grandmothers, Mrs. Ray E. (Lucille) Martin of Coleman and Dale Perrie of Lake Brownwood; aunts and uncles, Jim Martin of Weatherford, Terry Jordan of Weatherford, Rodney Martin of Odessa, Pam Martin of Lake Brownwood, Randy Martin of Comanche, Tammy Driskill of Arlington, Shelly Martin of San Antonio, Tip Matthews of Burkett and Mike Perrie of Lake Brownwood; four great-aunts, Delma Matthews, Geneva Newman and Bobbie Martin, all of Coleman, and Betty Neff of Lake Brownwood; and numerous cousins.

Cyrus Baxter

COMANCHE -- Graveside funeral services for Cyrus Baxter, 51, are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, at Oakwood Cemetery in Comanche under the direction of Hall and Sons Funeral Home. Visitation and viewing is scheduled for today and Thursday, until the time of the service.

Mr. Baxter died Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, in Amarillo.

Cyrus was born on April 18, 1952, in Gorman, Texas, the son of C.B. and Julia Jo McDonald Baxter. He was a 1970 graduate of Comanche High School. He attended Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos and graduated from Tarleton State College with a bachelor of science degree in Agriculture/Forestry/Parks and Wildlife. He joined the Texas Animal Health Commission and was stationed in South Texas. He later worked for Brown and Root Construction, Inc., of Houston, where he met and married Lisa Sharp. After returning to Comanche, he was engaged in ranching and farming, real estate and worked for a number or years with the Odell Reese and Bill Sears families. Since 1998, Baxter was the manager of the Cottonwood Ranch, 17 miles northeast of Clarendon, Texas.

Survivors include: son, Cody Baxter, of Comanche; sisters, Pat Patton, Dina Neal and Becky King; brother-in-law, Jack King; numerous nieces and nephews and many life-long friends.

David Earl Funderburg

COLEMAN -- David Earl Funderburg, 50, of Coleman died Monday, Sept. 29, 2003, at Coleman County Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 2, 2003, at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bill Merritt officiating. Interment will follow in the Coleman City Cemetery, under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.

Family visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. this evening, at the funeral home.

Funderburg was born March 1, 1953, in Mineral Wells, son of Mary Margaret Parkis Funderburg and the late Claudie Lee Funderburg. He was raised and attended school in Coleman. He married Adelita Banda on Oct. 8, 1974, in Coleman. He served for 20 years in the United States Army, receiving the Overseas Service Ribbon, Army Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal and several other service medals. Funderburg returned to Coleman in 1992 and worked as a laborer and was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Survivors include: daughter, Samantha Funderburg, of Deerfield, Kansas; son, Manolito Funderburg, of Deerfield, Kansas; mother, Mary Funderburg, of Coleman; sister, Susie Culpepper and husband, Jerry Don, of Zephyr; three brothers, Tommie Lee Funderburg, of Coleman, Michael Ray Funderburg and wife, Addie, of Coleman; Stephen Keith Funderburg, of Coleman; and his ex-wife, Adelita Funderburg, of Deerfield, Kan.

He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Darryle Wayne Funderburg.

Alfred Elmo Conklin

BURLESON -- Alfred Elmo Conklin, 89, a retired Soil Conservation Technician, passed away Monday, Dec. 1, 2003, at a Burleson nursing home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 4, at Laurel Land Memorial Chapel of Fort Worth. Graveside services will follow, in the Bangs Cemetery at 3 p.m. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 3, at the funeral home.

Elmo was born on Jan. 29, 1914, in Brown County. He was extremely active at the First Baptist Church of Burleson, where he was a member of the choir, a deacon and Sunday school teacher. Elmo led several musical programs at many of the local nursing homes over the years.

Survivors include: his son, Charles Conklin and wife, Bea; daughter, Peggy Morgan and husband, Ray; grandchildren, Lynn Morgan and wife, Julie, Craig Morgan and wife, Kirstie, Britt Conklin and wife, Lee Ann, Danny Magana and wife, Jenny, Robert Magana, and Jessica Vila and husband, Carlos; three great-grandchildren, Avery Magana, Hallie Conklin and Sabastian Vila.

Lydia Cash McGahey

MIDLAND -- Lydia Cash McGahey, of Midland, passed away and joined her Lord and Savior and many family members and friends on Nov. 29, 2003.

Lydia was born on June 9, 1902, in Brownwood, to Sallie and Emory Clay Cash. She grew up in the Jordan Springs Community in Brown County. She married Oma L. McGahey on Dec. 19, 1924, in Santa Anna. He preceded her in death on April 19, 1991. Lydia and Oma had three daughters: Meta Vee Bell, of Williamsburg, Va., Sally Atnipp, of Midland and Nanelle Dructor, who preceded her in death on March 21, 1990.

Lydia received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Howard Payne University and taught school for 31 years. She began her teaching career in Coleman, Dawson and Borden Counties. She then took time out to raise her daughters. She reentered the teaching profession in 1936. She taught in Ballinger, Winters, Big Spring and El Paso and retired in 1967. On her retirement, she and Oma moved back to Brownwood, living there until 1996, when she moved to Midland, residing at Polo Park Retirement Center until the time of her death. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Midland and greatly enjoyed the friendship of members of her Sunday School Class.

Lydia is survived by: her daughters, Meta Vee Bell and husband, Lloyd, of Williamsburg, Virginia and Sally Atnipp and husband, H. L., of Midland; 11 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. today, at the Davis-Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Brownwood. Interment will follow in the Jordan Springs Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to Hospice of Midland, 911 West Wall, Midland, TX 79701.

Janie Crouch

Janie Crouch, 94, of Brownwood, died Monday evening, Dec. 1, 2003, at a local nursing facility. Services are pending at Davis-Morris Funeral Home.

Olive Ruth Adams

RICHLAND SPRINGS -- Funeral services for Olive Ruth Adams, 84, of Richland Springs, will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 5 at the Howell-Doran Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tom Penalver officiating. Interment will follow in the Richland Springs Cemetery under the direction of Howell-Doran Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.

Mrs. Adams died Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, in Brownwood.

Mrs. Adams was born Jan. 4, 1919, in Brownwood, the daughter of William Henry Taylor and Willie Ann Sloan Taylor. She married Hubert Burns Adams on Jan. 23, 1946, in San Saba. He preceded her in death on March 25, 1975. She was a lifelong resident of San Saba County and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Richland Springs.

Survivors include three daughters, Bernice Adams of Richland Springs, Deborah Adams of Rising Star and Patricia Stanko and husband, Tommy, of Richland Springs; two sons, Tom Adams and wife, Connie, of Rising Star and Hubert Burns Adams, Jr. of Richland Springs; two grandchildren; brother, W. H. (Cat) Taylor, Jr. and wife, Doris, of Cherokee; sister, Fannie Pearl (Missie) Armes of Fredonia; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Henry Taylor; two brothers; and one sister.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Richland Springs or a charity of the donor's choice.
