Esther Geraldine Jordon Hughes, 77, of Rye, died Saturday, September 20, 2014, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 23, 2014, at the First Concord Baptist Church with burial following at the Concord cemetery in Rye. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Monday, at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Cleveland.

Geraldine was born October 9, 1936 in Hamilton, to parents; Thomas H. Jordon, Sr. and Emma M. McMurtry Jordon, a former resident of Houston, and has resided in the Rye area for the past 27 years. She was a graduate of the Webster High School class of 1955, a homemaker, and member of the First Concord Baptist Church. She also enjoyed crocheting, reading, church activities, gardening, and collecting stamps.

Mrs. Hughes was preceded in death by her parents: Thomas H. Jordon, Sr. and Emma M. McMurtry Jordon and sister: Sylvia A. Manshack. She is survived by her husband of 59 years: Selby A. Hughes of Rye, son: James A. Hughes of Rye, daughter: Janice M. Hughes of Sanger, brothers: Thomas H. Jordon, Jr. of Paris, Robert L. Jordon of LaPorte, and Mickey L. Jordon of LaPorte, sisters: Rosie Jordon of Hillsboro and Betty E. Cucco of Tarkington Prairie, grandchildren: Clifford D. Betcher and wife Wynne, Steven A. Hughes and wife Jennifer, and James K. Hughes, great-grandchildren: Grayson Betcher and Fabia Mouton, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Clements

On September 02, 2014 the Lord opened his arms, said "Connie, its time come home".

We were blessed with 60 years of love and laughter but after an extended and hard fought illness we had to say goodbye.

Connie was born January 24, 1954 in Dayton, Texas to Ruben Lars Peters and Althia A. Howard Peters. She was the youngest of eight with two half-siblings so there was always lots of noise and people round. Connie excelled at writing & literature and became know for her short stories and poems.

She graduated from Dayton High School in 1972 and worked at Peoples Grocery as a butchers assistant. In 1973 she met the love of her life, Gene Clements and only three months later in August they married . In 41 years they hardly spent a full day apart. She made their house a home and welcomed all who stopped by with a big smile and cold iced tea.

She was strong willed and fought hard to stay with us but she's now reunited with those who were waiting for her in heaven. Her parents, her two half-siblings, her sister, Lois Scarbrough, her brother-in-law, Joe Smith and her granddog, Hyde.

She leaves behind to honor her memory, her husband, Gene Clements of Dayton, Tx., her son, Marshall Clements of Dayton, Tx., her daughter, Pamela Clements of Dayton, Tx., her granddogs, Ponce and Dusty. Sisters, Faye Smith of Dayton, Tx., Bonnie Norris of Madison, Tn., Margaret Hoffman and husband Otto of Hockley, Tx, brothers, Aubrey Peters and wife, Doris of Hardin, Tx., Maurice Peters of Dayton, Tx., Doyle Peters of Hull, Tx. and a host of other family and friends.

A celebration of her life will be held in October. She is greatly missed and will forever be remembered.

Barker

Elizabeth “Diane” Weeks Barker, 67, of Baytown, died Saturday, September 13, 2014, at her residence.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 20, 2014, at the Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel in Dayton with services concluding thereafter. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

Diane was born December 1, 1946 in Pineland, to parents; Calvin and Lurline Hall Weeks, a former resident of Crosby and Las Vegas, and has resided in Baytown for the past seven years. She was a graduate of the Hemphill High School, a former Crosby ISD bus driver, and a member of the Eagles Club and CASI. She also enjoyed chili cook-offs and cooking.

Mrs. Barker was preceded in death by her father: Calvin Weeks, mother: Lurline Hall Weeks, and a grandson: Zachary Barker. She is survived by her husband of 14 years: James E. “JB” Barker of Baytown, sons: James Calvin Barker and wife Kristy of Dayton, Grady Barker and wife Jodie of Colorado, and Shawn Barker and wife Debra of Dayton, daughter: Joanna Spence Anderson and husband Perry of Las Vegas, grandchildren: Jonathan Gruner, Brittani Gruner, Jennifer Gruner, Shawna Barker, Hailey Barker, Kodi Casey, and Austin Barker, great-grandson: Justin Gruner, her beloved pets: Sadie and PK, and a host of other relatives and special friends.

Bird

Mike L. “Poppy” Bird, 56, of Liberty, died Tuesday, September 9, 2014, in Huntsville.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 12, 2014, at the Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel with burial following at Hardin Chapel cemetery in Hardin. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

Mike was born October 1, 1957 in Liberty, to parents; Lee Roy and Mary Rich Bird, and has been a lifelong resident of Liberty. He attended Liberty High School, was a diesel mechanic for Kee West Equipment of Baytown, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, tractor work, and helping others.

Mr. Bird was preceded in death by his father: Lee Roy Bird, parents-in-law: Buster and Sylvia Campbell Peak, and grandparents: Eli and Lizzie Rich and Margaret Ross Bird. He is survived by his wife of 35 years: Margaret Peak Bird of Liberty, daughters: Brandy Bird of Liberty, Julie Peak of Anahuac, Lana Webb of Hardin, and Regina Crouthers and husband James of Liberty, mother: Mary Rich Bird of Liberty, sister: Julia Bird Weisinger and husband Terry of Liberty, grandchildren: Cassie Fregia, Sylvia Brooke Crouthers, Noah Crouthers, Rylee Brown, Makenzie Brown, and Shelby Webb, great-granddaughter: Azaleigh Fregia, extended family members: Bret Willis, Madison Willis, and Coy Wrance Brock, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Mason

Ray Shaw Mason, Sr., 82, of Liberty, died Wednesday, September 10, 2014, at the Liberty Healthcare Center in Liberty.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Friday, September 12, 2014, at the Heights Baptist Church in Liberty with burial following at Hardin Chapel cemetery in Hardin. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

Ray was born September 19, 1931 in Dayton, to parents; George I. Mason, Sr. and Nina I. Shaw Mason, and has been a lifelong resident of Liberty. He was a graduate of Liberty High School, former owner of a Western Auto store, an Exxon service station, member of the First United Methodist Church, and a former volunteer firefighter for Liberty. He also enjoyed ranching and tractor work.

Mr. Mason was preceded in death by his father: George I. Mason, Sr., mother: Nina I. Shaw Mason, mother of his children: Vera Mason, son: Ray S. Mason, Jr., and brothers: George I. Mason, Jr., Leonard Mason, and Fred Mason. He is survived by his wife of 43 years: Vennie Jordan Mason of Liberty, daughters: Lynn Ayers and husband Ray of Liberty, Ann Phillips and husband Donnie of Hull, Janet McKinney and husband Bobby of Dayton, Dee Ann Gruver and husband Tim of Liberty, and Shelly Lopez of Liberty, brother: William Mason and wife Linda of Conroe, grandchildren: Jarrod Land and wife Courtney, Jake Phillips and wife Rachel, Josh Phillips and wife Amanda, Ally Rae McKinney, Austin Gruver and wife Ashley, Kirbie Gruver, Micah Gruver, Barry Lopez, J. R. Lillie E. “Bitsy” Mifflin Flowers, 84, of Dayton, died Wednesday, September 10, 2014, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, September 14, 2014, at the Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel with burial following at Magnolia Park cemetery in Dayton. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

Lillie was born August 14, 1930 in Dayton, to parents; Cecil G. and Myrtle Razer Mifflin, and was a lifelong resident of Dayton. She was a graduate of the Dayton High School class of 1948, a retired accountant from General Crude and Mobil Oil, and a member of the Trinity Baptist Church. She also enjoyed crafts, gardening, church activities, music, and spending time with family and friends.

Mrs. Flowers was preceded in death by her father: Cecil G. Mifflin, mother: Myrtle Razer Mifflin, husband of 43 years: James S. “Sid” Flowers, Jr., sister: Naomi Ripkowski and her husband August, brother: Harold Mifflin, and brother-in-law: Harry Daniel. She is survived by her daughter: Lisa R. Flowers of Dayton, sisters: Frances Turner and husband George of Conroe and Georgia Daniel of Livingston, brothers: James Mifflin and wife Jeanette of Dayton and Carlton Mifflin of Dayton, sister-in-law: Ellen Smith and husband Jimmy of Dayton, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Votaw

Brenda Joyce Votaw 68 of Saratoga, Texas, died on Tuesday September 9, 2014 at her daughters residence in Saratoga.

A service of remembrance will be held on Friday September 12, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. at Faith & Family Funeral Services Chapel with Reverend James Simmons officiating. Interment will follow at the John Clark Votaw Memorial cemetery in Saratoga. The family will be receiving friends also on Friday September 12, 2014 from 10:00A.M. until time of service at Faith & Family.

A native of Birmingham, Alabama, she had lived in Saratoga, and was an homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband John Clark Votaw, three brothers and one sister. Survivors are her son; Ronnie Richardson and wife Brenda of Hammond, Indiana. Daughters; Kristy Ryan and husband Robert of Saratoga, and Tammy Reed and husband Gary of Birmingham, Alabama. Brothers; Jim Hurley of Birmingham, Alabama, and Jerry Hurley of Alabama, and sister; Sandra Manning of Section, Alabama. Grandchildren are Robert Ryan II, Brandy Crane, Cody Reed, Casey Reed, Shaina Richardson, and Brett Richardson. Great grandchildren are Austin Simmons, Alex Bice, Aidan Bice, Colby Crane, Colten Crane, Caleb Reed, Logan Reed, Lacy Reed, and Amaya Richardson. Serving as pallbearers are Reverend James Simmons, Mark Simmons, Chris Simmons, Jay Jacobsen, Greg Votaw, and Phillip Thibodeaux.

Gulledge

Luther Clyde Gulledge, 74, of Cleveland passed away Monday, September 8, 2014.

He was born December 23, 1939 in Alma, Texas to parents Oran Jarome Gulledge and Ovelia Juanita Willis Gulledge. Luther graduated from Ennis High School in 1958 and retired from the Texaco Chemical Company in 1994. Mr. Gulledge served on the Tarkington School Board for 20 years. He served as deacon of Oak Shade Baptist Church where he taught Sunday school and was an usher. He enjoyed farming, going to A&M games and his many grandchildren. Luther took great pride in his marriage of 53 years and loved spending time with his family.

Services for Mr. Gulledge will be 2:00 p.m., Thursday, September 11, 2014 at Oak Shade Baptist Church with Rev. Doug Morris officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Shade cemetery under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, Cleveland. Visitation will be 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday evening at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, Cleveland.

Luther was preceded in death by his parents, his grandparents, Ethel Mae Brock and William Joseph Gulledge, Mary Ellen Martin and William James Willis, and his half- brother, Aubrey Lee Merrell. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sue Smith Gulledge; daughters, Tamara Blackmon, and Shanda Neelley and husband Dan; son, Shane Gulledge and wife Jennifer; sister, Cathy Davis and husband Edwin, brother, Oran Gulledge and wife Charlotte; grandchildren, Lane Gulledge, Presley Blackmon, Landry Gulledge, Jackson Neelley, Kaia Blackmon, Sydni Gulledge, Miles Neelley, Mason Neelley and Molly Neelley; brothers-in-laws and sisters-in-laws, Dalton Gregory, Sandra and Buddy Moore, Geanie & Harold Cross, Dorothy Smith Sherling, Jerry Paul and Josetta Smith, also numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Simmons

Luther Kale Simmons, 94, of Hardin, traded in his Navy wings for his Angel wings on Wednesday, August 27, 2014, after battling two strokes and a heart attack over the last several months.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, September 13, 2014, at the Ryan cemetery in Tarkington Prairie. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

He is preceded in death by his parents, David W. & Carrie Simmons; his wife, Marie Simmons; his sons Dennis E. Simmons and David L. Simmons; his brothers & their wives Roy & Delia Simmons and T.B. & Bertha Simmons and one sister & her husband Vinie & Carson Tanner.

He is survived by his grandchildren: Lance Simmons, Johnny Simmons, Ronnie Simmons & Brandi Simmons, great grandchildren: Lantz Simmons and Mackenzie Till, daughter-in-law and her husband: Denice & Alan Young, special friends: Fritz & Chris Wulff and their children and grandchildren, Chuck Snyder, Bobby Baker, Boyd & Denise Parrish and their children and grandchildren, Joe and Cassie Balch, the Laird family and the Goings family.

Luther is a veteran of World War II, where he earned his Wings, several Stars, Ribbons & Medals, including the Distinguished Flying Cross & Air Medal. He served aboard the USS Lexington from 1942-1945 for the US Navy as a Radio Man and Gunner. He met his sweetheart, Marie, at a dance; who happened to work at Douglas AFB as a Rosie the Riveter. They were married 3 months after he was Honorably Discharged. He went on to work in the Research Department of Humble Oil & Refining Co. and retired after 32 years. After his retirement he and his sweetheart started traveling with their RV and worked at several Good Sam Club Parks such as Florida, North Carolina, Arkansas & Mississippi. Pastimes were rodeo, baseball, fishing, traveling & camping. He loved his ice cream soup and wearing his Blue or Tan Dickie overalls and ball caps.

He grew up in Tarkington Prairie, TX; but settled in areas such as Houston, Baytown, Highlands, Liberty, Hardin, Onalaska, Livingston, and Nacogdoches. Everywhere he lived he grew and tended to a garden, was quite a carpenter and could make a great pot of coffee that was always on for friends and family. Not only did he share the coffee, but he shared many a fresh vegetable from his garden, his sense of humor and picking. He had so many friends along the way and always would say “You have to be a Friend to have Friends”

Wilson

Roland James Wilson, 76, of Moss Bluff, died Monday, September 8, 2014, at the VA Medical Center in Houston.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 13, 2014, at the Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Darrell Brown officiating and burial following at Magnolia Park cemetery in Dayton. Visitation will be held from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

Roland was born September 4, 1938 in Tampa, Florida, a former resident of Page, and has resided in Moss Bluff for the past 32 years. He was a veteran of US Army 101st Airborne Division, former owner of Whitney Glass and Mirror, and a commercial fisherman. He also enjoyed being at the river, fishing, and camping.

Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by his father: James J. Wilson, mother: Tamara Williams Provost, brothers: Vernon and Aaron Wilson, and sister: Louise James.

Mr. Wilson is survived by his wife of 52 years: Mary Norris Wilson of Moss Bluff, daughters: Arahonda Conley of Texas City, Sandra McHenry of Gatesville, Deborah Comans of Mississippi, Elizabeth Rash of Mississippi, and Patricia Clark of Mississippi, sons: Anthony Brown of Moss Bluff and Leon Brown of Mississippi, sisters: Christine Pounds of Onalaska and Martha J. Parchinsky of Alabama, brother: Johnny E. Wilson of Austin, three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Phillips

Michael Anthony Phillips, 55, of Hull, died Monday September 8, 2014.

He loved animals and raised birds and teaching some to talk. He was a gardener and enjoyed growing flowers of all kinds. He also was a great cook.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Ennice Phillips.

He is survived by his brother, Richard R. Phillips, Jr. of North Carolina; sisters, Anita M. Phillips of Hull and Lois J. Bennett of Leesburg, FL and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Thursday September 11, 2014, at Faith and Family Funeral Services, officiated by Reverend Lonnie Jordan.

Thames

Louis Edward Thames, age 88, of Anahuac, passed away on September 7, 2014 at Liberty Health Care Center in Liberty, TX.

Louis was born December 28, 1925 in Hearne, TX, son of the late Louis Milton Thames and Ira Catherine Dunlap Thames. He attended high school in Bryan, TX. Louis then served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946 while being a part of Patton’s Army. He received a Purple Heart Medal and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. After serving his term in the U.S. Army, Louis then went on and received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville. Louis was also a member of the football team at Sam Houston State University. Louis was the owner of Louis Thames Chevrolet and was in the business for thirty years.

Louis was preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Gene Thames, Hoyt Thames, sisters; Alva Clark Thames, Elizabeth Free Thames, Ethel Cowan Thames, Effie Winters Thames, Helen Keefer Thames and Norma Culbreth Thames.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory, wife; Margie Thames of Anahuac, daughters; Lee Shamburger and husband Bill of Dallas, TX, Beth Cook and husband Aaron of Liberty, TX, grandchildren; Lauren Cook, Madison Cook, Tyler Shamburger and Maggie Shamburger.

Services for Louis Edward Thames will be Thursday, September 11, 2014 at 10am at First Baptist Church in Anahuac with burial to follow at Anahuac cemetery. Rev. Gary Hillyard will be officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, September 10, 2014 from 5pm to 8pm at Sterling Funeral Home, 1201 South Main, Anahuac.
