Havard

Thomas “Tommy” Harris Havard, age 64, of Tarkington, Texas, passed away Wednesday, December 22, 2010. Tommy was born on December 18, 1946 in Jacksonville, North Carolina to W.H. and Clara Havard.

Survivors include his children, Amy Havard Vigushin and husband, Dimitri, Cody Havard, Carly Havard, Randie Havard, and Jeff Havard; brother, Bucky Havard and wife, Mary Jo; sister, Ilene Havard Newman and husband, Larry Dale; grandchildren, Edith Vigushin, Simon Vigushin, Anatolia (Lola) Vigushin; numerous other loving and caring family members and treasured friends.

Visitation will be held Sunday, December 26, 2010, 5:00-9:00 p.m. at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel, Cleveland, Texas.

Funeral services will be held Monday, December 27, 2010, 2:00 p.m. at Rural Shade Baptist Church with interment at Ryan cemetery.

Watson

Fannie May Watson 93, of Daisetta died Sunday December 19, 2010 at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital in Baytown.

She was born January 11, 1917 in Goss, Louisiana to William Gipson Arnold and Iva Mae Black. She had lived in Daisetta seventy five years and was a member of the Daisetta United Methodist Church. During her life Ms. Watson had sold Avon products for twenty years and had wrote articles for the Liberty Vindicator also for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband John Thomas "J.T." Watson survivors are her sons Reverend Gideon Watson and wife Carolyn of Hardin, Jimmy Watson of Heidelberg Germany, daughter Peggy Marie Odom and husband Jimmie of Hemphill and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Grandchildren; five and Great grandchildren seven.

A service of remembrance will be held Thursday December 23, 2010 at 10:00 A.M. at The Daisetta United Methodist Church with Reverend Gideon Watson, Reverend Bo Owens and Reverend Mary Gossett officiating.

Interment will follow at Guedry cemetery in Batson. A gathering of family and friends will be held on Wednesday December 22, 2010 starting at 5: 00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M.at Faith & Family Funeral Services chapel.

Arrangements are under the care of Faith & Family Funeral Service of Batson, TX.

Zaruba

Rudy “The Bug” Zaruba, IV, 23, of Houston, died Saturday, December 18, 2010, at his residence.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 22, 2010, at the St. Joseph’s the Worker Catholic Church in Dayton with burial following at Palms Memorial Park cemetery. Visitation will be held 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday, with rosary services at 7 p.m., at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

Rudy was born January 27, 1987 in Houston, to parents; Rudy, III and Mary Elizabeth Routh Zaruba, and has resided in the Houston area throughout his life. He was a graduate of the Cy-Creek High School, was attending trade school, a volunteer and cook for the Salvation Army, a SKA fishing tournament champion, and a baseball pitcher with a 95 mph fastball. He also enjoyed playing Xbox, rummy, cooking, shopping, and arm wrestling.

Mr. Zaruba was preceded in death by his brother: Grant Zaruba and uncle: Kip Zaruba. He is survived by his parents: Rudy, III and Mary Elizabeth Routh Zaruba of Houston, brothers: Gavin and Chase Zaruba of Houston, grandparents: Rudy, II and Barbara Zaruba of Dayton and Harry and Cynthia Routh of Houston, also numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

Godby

Shelby Jean Moore Godby, 65, of Liberty, Texas died on Sunday, December, 19, 2010 after courageously fighting a nearly seven year battle with cancer. Despite her prognosis, she did not fear death. She said many times that when the Lord is ready for her to go she was ready but, until then, she had things to do.

Born May 9, 1945 in Richmond, Kentucky as the daughter of the late James (Jim) Moore and Sally Lou Irvine Moore, Jean graduated from Madison Central High School, Class of 1963. While a senior in high school, she met her husband, Russell Lee Godby, on a double date and later married June 14, 1963. She was a proud wife, mother, mother-in-law, and grandmother.

A lady of incredible strength and drive, Jean had many passions in life, including reading, friendships, travel, antiques, genealogy, and garage sales, but the passion for which she had the most love was her family.

She was a member of the Liberty Church of Christ and a long-time volunteer with the Liberty Church of Christ Food Bank. She never met a stranger, was a lifelong animal lover, and Kentucky Colonel, the highest honor awarded by the Commonwealth of Kentucky in recognition of outstanding service to the community.

Jean is survived by her husband of 47 ½ years Russell Lee Godby, son James Gregory Godby and his wife Sandra, granddaughter Briana Laura Godby and grandson Mathew Lee Godby, all of Liberty, and son Jon Everett Godby of Houston. She is also survived by numerous other family and friends.

The family wishes to thank all those who have extended their thoughts and prayers during her struggle, including those who have provided her incredible care: the staff of M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, The Methodist Hospital, and the Houston Hospice.

Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Liberty Church of Christ, 3201 North Main, Liberty, Texas with funeral services immediately following at 2 p.m. at the Church with Jonathon Sanford officiating. A private interment will follow at Cooke Memorial cemetery. Honorary pallbearers are Joshua Chatlin, Jesse Garcia, John Hebert, James Litton, III, Woodrow Ozan, Ronnie Rubit, and Bowen Whittington.

Wells

A Mass of Christian Burial, for Luther T. Wells, Jr, 88, will be held on Wednesday, December 22, 2010 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 411 Milam, Liberty, Texas, at 11:00 A.M. with Co-Celebrants: Rev. Father Sebastian Myladiyil, S.V.D., Monsignor Patrick R. Wells, and the Most Reverend Curtis J. Guillory, S.V.D., D. D., Bishop of the Diocese of Beaumont

There will be a wake service at the church on Tuesday, December 21, 2010 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.

A native of Liberty and a graduate of Prairie View A&M University, he received his Bachelors of Arts Degree in Music January 1950 and his Masters of Art degree in August 1950. His elementary schooling was completed at Our Mother of Mercy Catholic School in Ames, and his high school diploma at Liberty Training School, Liberty.

He was a veteran of World War II, being honorably discharged with the rank of S/Sgt, and Administrative NCO. Wells also studied at the School of Modern Photography, New York, completing courses in portrait, commercial and color photography. He graduated from the Commonwealth College of Sciences in Houston, Texas in January of 1957 and became a Licensed Funeral Director in August of 1959. He taught for thirteen years in the Liberty Independent School District and was named Teacher of the Year in 1963. He quit teaching after in father’s death in 1963 to manage Wells Mortuary, Inc. In 1990 he returned to teaching at the Windham School District Texas Department of Corrections in Dayton, Texas. He retired in August 1998.

A faithful member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, he taught CCE class, as well as holding other positions in the church. He was ordained a Deacon on June 13, 1992.

Wells is preceded in death by his parents: Luther T . Wells, Sr. and Stella Wells and two sisters: Helen Goudeau and Doris Jenkins.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 55 years: Bennie Lee Wells; one daughter, Karen Wells (David) Lambert three sons: Luke T. Wells, Christopher Wells and Steven Wells; two brothers: James Wendell Wells and Monsignor Patrick Roland Wells; six grandchildren: Gerard (Tenika) Lambert, David Lambert, Jr., Jasmine Lambert, Adrienne (Johnnie) Freeman, Steven Wells, Jr. and Byron Wells and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Farris

J. D. Farris, 83, of Tarkington Prairie, died Saturday, December 18, 2010, at the Heritage Villa Nursing Home in Dayton.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 21, 2010, at the Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton with burial following at Ryan cemetery in Tarkington Prairie. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday, at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

J.D. was born December 27, 1926 in Dayton, to parents; William A. “Jack” and Clara E. White Farris, and a lifelong resident of the Dayton area. He was a graduate and football player of the Dayton High School class of 1944, veteran of the Merchant Marines and Army during WW II, served on the Dayton City Council for eight years, former member of the Dayton Volunteer Fire Department and Young Farmers, and a retired salesman after employment with the Liberty Implement/John Deere and Seaberg Rice Company. J.D. lost his arm in a rice dryer accident, but never thought of himself to be handicapped. He could do anything anyone else could do and even better than most, including holding his three girls at one time. He also enjoyed hunting rabbit, squirrel, dove, and quail.

Mr. Farris was preceded in death by his parents and sisters: Violet Bauerkemper, Hazel Schauer, Gwendolyn Curtis, Imogene Farris, and Jackie Garrard. He is survived by his wife of 61 years: Sis Havard Farris of Tarkington Prairie, daughters: Rhonda Farris of Baytown, Evonne Crocker and husband Wayne of Navasota, and Monya Farris of Lindale, brother-in-law: Cary Havard and wife Sally of Dayton, grandchildren: Jinifer Johnson and husband Billy, Rose Ann Barbeaud, Betsy Bergeron, Mollie Bergeron, Elizabeth Crump and husband Andy, Laura Sprouls and husband Brian, and Paul Rucker and wife Sarah, great-grandchildren: Cory Vauter, Colby Johnson, Jesse Johnson, and Haley Smith, great great-granddaughter: Kathryn Johnson, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

In lieu of usual floral remembrances the family requests that donations be made to the Dayton Volunteer Fire Department at P.O. Box 606, Dayton, Texas 77535.

Johnston

Doyle R. “Yogi” Johnston, 66, of Crosby, died Thursday, December 16, 2010, at the Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston.

A time of remembrance will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., Saturday, December 18, 2010, at the Johnston residence. Arrangements are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

Doyle was born August 1, 1944 in Crosby, to parents; Carl and Mable Johnston, and has resided in the Crosby area throughout his life. He was a graduate of the Crosby High School class of 1962, veteran of the US Army with service during the Vietnam War, retired conductor and brakeman for the Southern Pacific Railroad, and enjoyed his cattle.

Mr. Johnston was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 47 years: Linda White Johnston of Crosby, son: Craig Carl Johnston and wife Stacey of Collierville, TN, daughter: Kimberly Johnston Burkhart and husband Jake of Houston, grandchildren: Cullen Gregory Johnston, Kirsten Erin Johnston, Abby Burkhart, and Emily Burkhart, brothers: William Wayne Johnston and wife Vickie of Haslet and Donnie Joe Johnston and wife Michelle of Crosby, sister: Linda Carol Johnson of East Texas, sisters-in-law: Sherri Easley and husband Paul of Dayton, Donna Suitt of Crosby, and Anita Pringle of Reno, NV, brothers-in-law: Terry White and wife Carolyn of Highlands and Tony White and wife Susan of Lake Whitney, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Newton

Nelda Ruth Newton, 74, died Thursday, December 16, 2010 in Baytown, Texas.

Nelda was born January 19, 1936 in Channelview the daughter of the late Robert Leo Bruce and Lola Mae Burk Bruce. Mainly a homemaker she later went on to work for J.C. Penny, Fisk Electric, and Service Paint. She was talented in many are forms, working with wood, crocheting, or painting. She was preceded in death by her parents, a step-mother Uretha Nelson Bruce, and a daughter Lisa Carol Miller.

She leaves behind her husband R.D. Newton, her beloved children, Cynthia Rene Duff husband James, Michael Dale Newton wife Sheri, Bruce Anthony Newton, and Brian Andrew Newton all of Old River, her sisters, Mary Ann Schoonover husband Willard of Lolita, TX, and Diana Lynn Vollert husband Larry of Liberty. In addition she leaves thirteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren.

She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Funeral services will be held 11AM Saturday, December 18, 2010 at Allison Funeral Service, 1101 N. Travis Liberty, Texas with burial to follow in Palms Memorial Park. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

Goodman

Floyd Henry Goodman (Pawpa), a 91 year old US Navy veteran died on Monday December 13, 2010 at Harbor House Hospice Center in Beaumont, Texas.

He died of congestive heart failure. He and his late wife, Olga Dell Smith Goodman, had lived in the Lumberton area since 1970.

He was born March 15, 1919 at his parent’s home in Francitas, Jackson County, Texas.

He was the son of the late James Floyd Goodman, a Justice of the Peace in Jackson County, and Lacy Addie Battles Goodman.

Upon graduating in 1937 from La Ward High School in Jackson County, Texas, he continued to work at a “water pumping plant” near Edna, Texas.

He would tell his family about his younger days of not having any electricity, no running water, and no indoor plumbing.

This was “just the way things were, during the Great Depression. A person learned to make do with what you had.”

He moved to Houston to attend a diesel Mechanic school.

After completion of the nine month course, he joined the United States Navy on July 12, 1938 and was shipped to San Diego, California for basic training.

After graduating from boot camp Floyd was assigned to the USS Richmond a steam driven light cruiser ship and served on this ship until 1943.

On March 27, 1943 his ship was part of the Battle of the Komandorski Islands.

This 4-hour running battle with the Japanese ships was the longest continuous naval gun battle in naval history.

In early June 1943 Floyd attended a diesel mine sweeping school on June 24, 1943 he married Olga Dell Smith his childhood sweetheart.

After several months of school Floyd was assigned to the USS Caution a mine sweeper ship and served on this ship until 1945.

At the end of World War II he was stationed on the base of Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands. He was part of a military team assigned to feed and shelter the troops and civilian personnel who conducted eight atomic bomb tests on the nearby islands and on old ships. He often told friends and family of his witnessing the explosions the tremendous mushroom clouds they made the radioactive tests conducted and blood samples taken from military personnel. He said those explosive events still lingered in his mind and left him with a very uneasy feeling. Floyd received his honorable discharge from the US Navy on July 20, 1948. He and his wife moved back to Jackson County, Texas to try his hand at rice farming with his dad.

In 1955 he was hired as a mechanic with Houston Pipe Line (HPL) Company, and moved to Edna, Texas in 1964 he was promoted to assistant manager with HPL and moved to Victoria, Texas in 1970. He was promoted to district superintendent with HPL and moved to Lumberton, Texas. He retired in 1984. Floyd was a Mason with over Fifty-Five years of membership with the Masonic Lodge of Ganado, Texas. Floyd lost his wife after Forty-Seven Years of marriage in 1991.

He is survived by his two Sons: DR. Reggie Goodman and his wife Trudy and Judge Fred Goodman, and his wife Diane, all of Lumberton. He has six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren, with another great grandchild due in February.

His wishes were to have his cremated remains joined with his wife’s, and spread along the coast line of Crystal Beach where he and his wife loved to fish, and spent many hours together.

A practicing Christian, Floyd said he is looking forward to seeing lots of friends and family he has not seen for a long time. He said he very much looking forward to seeing the love of his life- his wife.

Upon his request there will not be a funeral or memorial service. He said he came in this world quietly, and would like to leave quietly.

Coplin

Harry Ray Coplin, 77, of Daisetta TX, died Tuesday December 14, 2010 at Harbor Hospital in Beaumont.

He was born in Roxton Texas to Melvin Coplin and Gladys Lee McCulley on August 20, 1933. He had lived in Daisetta for forty five years and was a Certified Welder Inspector for C.B.S. of Houston. He was also a U.S. Air Force veteran and a member of Central Baptist Church of Daisetta.

He was preceded in death by his son Bobby Dale Coplin, step-son Franklin Lewis Tousha, Jr, brother M.E. Coplin, and sister Patsy Loomer.

Harry is survived by his wife Mary Coplin of Daisetta, stepdaughter Susan English of Zavalla, and many nieces, nephews and friends. Grandchildren are Chae Marie Coplin, Shelby Coplin, step grandchildren Christopher and Stephanie Bush and one great grandchild Branson Bush.

A service of remembrance will be held Saturday December 18, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. At Central Baptist Church of Daisetta with Reverend Harold Burchfield officiating. Interment will follow with military honors at Oakdale cemetery in Daisetta.

The family will be receiving friends on Friday December 17, 2010 from 4:00 P.M. Until 9:00 P.M. At Central Baptist Church.

Arrangements are under the care of Faith & Family Funeral Service of Batson, TX.
