McMillen

Betty Jane McMillen, 73, of Dayton, Texas, died March 23, 2008 in Houston, Texas.

Betty was born on February 24, 1935 in Plaquemine, Louisiana to Grover and Etta (Bates) Reed. Betty has lived in the Dayton area for 20 years and made many friends during that time. In her spare time she enjoyed taking care of animals, cooking those Sunday dinners and spending time with her family. Betty was a very strong willed and independent woman that always worried about taking care of others first and she will be missed by all that knew her.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents Grover and Etta Reed, husband Alfred McMillen and brother Doug Reed. She is survived by her daughter Sandra Finley and husband Mark, son Leo Brown and wife Kim, daughter Linda Gubitosi and husband Todd Irving, sister Virginia Fielder, grandson Christopher Brown, grandson Jacob Brown, great granddaughter Jaylynn Brown special friends Gidget, Opie, Mattie and many other relatives and friends. A visitation for family and friends will be held Tuesday March 25, 2008 from 1-2pm at Sterling Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held March 25, 2008 2pm at Sterling Funeral Home with Rev. Wayne Hardin officiating.

Victery

Charles D. Victery, Jr., 74, of Liberty, TX, died Thursday, March 20 at the Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, TX.

Graveside services will be held on Monday, March 24, 2008 at the Hardin Chapel cemetery in Hardin, TX., at 9:00 A. M. with the Reverend Gideon Watson officiating.

Charles was born on October 20, 1933, in the St. Joseph Hospital in Houston, TX. to Dr. Charles D. and Emma Thelma Dorbandt Victery. Charles graduated from the Liberty High School in 1951, served in the Army, and then graduated from the Sam Houston State University in 1956. Charles was married to Carolyn Smith on November 23, 1955 at the First Methodist Church in Liberty, TX. He was an elementary school teacher with the Pasadena ISD and he was a master tinkerer, woodwork specialist. He did some wielding and would fix almost anything. Charles and Carolyn moved back to Liberty 17 years ago and made the Hardin United Methodist Church their church home.

He is preceded in death by his parents. The survivors are his wife of 52 years, Carolyn Victery of Liberty, a daughter and son-in-law: Jerri Tharpe and Dallas Woodward Tharpe of Baton Rouge, LA, two grandsons: Dallas William Tharpe of Lubbuck, TX. and Bryan Jacob Tharpe of Dallas, TX. and other family members.

Memorials may be made to the Building Fund at the Hardin United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 134, Hardin, Texas 77561.

Hoffman

Joseph Freeman Hoffman, 22, of Mont Belvieu, Texas, died Monday, March 17, 2008. He was born on September 12, 1985 to James Howard Hoffman, Jr. and Pamela Sue (Freeman) Price in Baytown, Texas. Joseph was a member of Crosby Church in Crosby, Texas. He loved to go fishing with his grandpa. He will be remembered for being a kind person that made friends with everyone he met and his knowledge of cows. His true passion was his cows. He cared for them like they were a part of his family. Even at an early age he would go out and sleep in the pasture with his cows. He will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him.

Joseph was preceded in death by his father, James Howard Hoffman, Jr.; step-dad, David Wayne Price; grandpa (PawPaw), E.J. Freeman, Jr.; grandma, Billie Freeman; Memaw, Eola Maley; and great-uncle, John Roelse. He is survived by his mother, Pam Price of Mont Belvieu; sisters, Susan Pitre and husband Tracy of Mont Belvieu and Kerri Cochran and husband Jeremy of Bryan; step-brother, David “J.R.” Price, Jr. of Old River; step-sister, Jody Roberts and husband Robbie of Baytown; nieces, Emily, Kaylynn, Hope, and Ainsley; nephews, Collin and Caleb; special friend, Joel Black; and numerous aunts, uncles and friends.

A visitation for family and friends will be from 5:00 until 8:00 PM Sunday, March 23 at Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton. A service of remembrance will be held on Monday, March 24 at 10:00AM at Crosby Church in Crosby, Texas with Pastor Keenan Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Cedar Crest cemetery in Baytown, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joseph’s name to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation online at https://www.cff.org/GetInvolved/ManyWaysToGive/Donate/ or to the Crosby Church Mission Fund at PO Box 975 Crosby, Texas 77532.

Steelhammer

James Sidney Steelhammer, age 81, of Coldspring, Texas, died Saturday, March 15, 2008. He was born in Brady, Texas on January 22, 1927 to Albert Henry and Mollie Steelhammer.

Survivors include his seven children, Earl Steelhammer, Edward Steelhammer, Thomas Standley, Susan Jackson, Don Standley, Jan Cantu, Gene Standley; brother, Roy Steelhammer; seventeen grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren with numerous other cherished family members and caring friends.

Graveside services were held 2:00 p.m., Thursday, March 20, 2008 at Hayman cemetery, Coldspring, Texas.

Styron

Johnnie Virginia Styron, 75, of Dayton, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, March 18, 2008 after an extended illness.

She was born March 22, 1932 in Mississippi to parents, John and Olie V. Pigford Hopkins. She had lived in Pasadena before moving to the Dayton area in 1973. Mrs. Styron was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church, enjoyed crocheting, cross stitching, sewing, tending her flowers and gardening. Most of all she loved her family, as she was always cooking and caring for them.

Services for Mrs. Styron will be 2:00 p.m., Thursday, March 20, 2008 at Trinity Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Blackburn officiating. Interment will follow at Palms Memorial Park cemetery under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home. The family will receive friends 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.

She was preceded in death by her parents: John Hopkins and Olie V. “Virgie” Pigford Hudson; sons: Roger Styron, and Ronford Styron; and grandson: Ron Styron, Jr. She is survived by her husband of 63 years: H. B. Styron of Dayton; sons: Rhonnie Styron and wife Joy of Bedia, Ricky Styron and wife Sherlyn of Dayton, Roderick Styron and wife Pamela of Dayton; and daughter: Robin Brownlee and husband Russell of Dayton; 26 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and numerous great great-grandchildren.

Jordan

Ora Lee Wright Jordan, 91, of Hardin, died Monday, March 17, 2008, at the Magnolia Place Nursing Home in Liberty.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday at the Heights Baptist Church in Liberty with private interment following. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m., Wednesday at the church prior to services. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

Ora Lee was born April 14, 1916 in Burke, Texas to parents; Joe F. and Vennie Knight Wright, a former resident of Big Springs, and has resided in the Hardin area for the past 40 years. She was a homemaker, member of Heights Baptist Church, and enjoyed her yard, church activities, flowers, and especially her grandchildren.

Mrs. Jordan was preceded in death by her parents, husband: Virgil Jordan, and brothers: Chester and Leon Wright. She is survived by her daughters: JoAnn Bean and husband Buddy of Dayton, Vennie Mason and husband Ray of Liberty, and Jackie Fortune and husband Grimes of Corrigan, son: Virgil Jordan and wife Carol of Goodrich, brother: Jack Wright and wife Evelyn of Livingston, 11 grandchildren: DeeAnn Gruver, Shelly Lopez, Lannise Reidland, Dwayne Gott, Walter Lee Fortune, Tracy Cobb, Julie Thompson, Tammy Wyatt, Lynn Ayers, Ann Phillips, and Janet McKinney, 18 great-grandchildren, six nephews, two nieces, and numerous other relatives, and friends.

Beard

Nettie Norene Beard, 93, of Liberty, formerly of Moody, died at Magnolia Place Health Care Center in Liberty, on March 7, 2008. Graveside services were held on Sunday, March 9, 2008 at 2:00 P. M. at the Moody cemetery.

Nettie Norene was born on February 8, 1915, in Moody, Texas, the daughter of the late Bernard Oscar Beard and Icle Torrence Beard.

She graduated from the Troy High School in 1930 as valedictorian at the age of 15. Because the Great Depression had just begun, she was not able to attend college until 1938. She worked her way through the University of Texas and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1942. She was employed by the Texas City ISD as an elementary teacher for many years and later as elementary librarian until she returned to Moody in 1968.

Norene was definitely a collector-a collector of books, antiques, and things that she thought might bring others happiness. She was teased about having a ‘Depression Mentality’ because she was reluctant to throw anything away- somebody might need it.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Jack Bernard Beard and Eugene O’Connor Beard. She is survived by a sister, Shirley Ruth Blake of Liberty, one nephew, Gary Beard of Weaversville, NC, two nieces, Cindy Taylor of Boerne and Kathy Brunson of Liberty. She is also survived by a host of other relatives including cousin and special friend, Charles Howell Hundley of Marble Falls, TX. In lieu of flowers, Norene would be honored by a donation of a book too a local library or school.

George

Martha Ellen (Ray) George, 57, of Anahuac, Texas, died Wednesday, March 12, 2008.

She was born on October 21, 1950 to Sherman and Martha Eleanor (Beverly) Ray in Houston, Texas. Martha was a member of Turkey Creek Missionary Baptist Church. She loved to read. Martha will be remembered for her floral designs, crafts, and being a Beetles fan.

Martha is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gayle George; and step-sister, Callie Ray. She leaves behind, sons, Geremy Reuben George of Houston and Glenn Ray George and wife Nicki of Moss Bluff, Louisiana; daughter, Glenda Rebecca George of Anahuac; sisters, Pat Craft and husband Dale, Mary Enyart and husband Gene and Bonnee Nerrin and husband John; granddaughters, Abbie, Elizabeth, Darbi, and Natalie; aunt, Marilyn Sallard and husband Bobby; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Visitation for family and friends will be Sunday, March 16, 2008 from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at Sterling Funeral Home. A service of remembrance will be held at Sterling Funeral Home at 10:00 AM, Monday, March 17, 2008 with Rev. David Boutin officiating. Interment will follow in Anahuac cemetery.

Payne

Thomas Glen Payne, 66, of Winnie, died Wednesday March 12, 2008 at his residence.

Born to Elbert Leslie Payne and Jewel Marie May in Hull TX, Thomas was a heavy Equipment mechanic for N.E.S. Rental Equipment in Port Arthur and a U.S. Marine Corp veteran.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Elbert and Jewel Payne, daughter; Vicki Payne and sisters; Patricia Williamson and Doris Brock. Survivors include wife; Linda Gerloff Payne of Winnie, Sons; Thomas Payne and wife Sandy of Sour, Lake, Bryan Payne and wife Lisa of Sour, Lake, Thomas Aaron Payne of Renton WA. Daughter; Joycelyn Martin of Issaquah WA. Brothers; Howard Payne and Kenneth Payne of Hull, Sisters; Sandra Brack of Liberty. Numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, stepchildren.

Service of remembrance will be held Wednesday March 19, 2008 at 2:00 P.M. At Batson Prairie Baptist Church with Reverend M.D. Miller officiating. Military graveside service will follow at Guedry cemetery.

Services are entrusted to Faith & Family Funeral Services, Batson, TX.

Perry

Royal Henderson Perry, 86, of Liberty, died at the Hermann Hospital in Houston, TX on March 12, 2008.

Visitation will be held on Friday, March 14 from 6-8 P.M. at the Allison Funeral Service in Liberty, TX. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, March 15 at 2 P.M. at the First United Methodist Church of Liberty. Interment will follow the service at the Cooke Memorial cemetery.

Dr. Perry graduated from San Augustine High School in 1938 and Texas A & M University in 1951 with a degree in Veterinary Medicine. He came to Liberty and opened the Hardin Road Animal Hospital where continued to practice there until his death.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Richard Henry Perry and Omie Sarfar Pate Perry; his brother, Sidney Perry and his sisters: Erna Watson and Rachel Hopkins.

Dr. Perry is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Katherine and children: Jerry Perry and wife, Cathy, Kathy Perry and husband David Richardson, Kris Perry and husband, James and Jimmy Perry. One brother, I.H. Perry; mother-in-law, Marietta Willis; grandchildren, Jerry Perry, Jr., Angie Martin, Jay Starks and Nicki Starks and four great-grandchildren also survived him.

Squier

Donald William Squier, 57, of Cleveland, Texas, died Thursday, March 13, 2008. He was born in Cleveland, Texas on July 26, 1950 to William and Mildred Squier.

He is preceded in death by his father, William Squier; grandparents, Clifton and Idell Squier and Ed and Jewel Enloe. Survivors include his devoted wife, Amber Carole Dovall Wells Squier; parents, Mildred and Earl Brown; daughter, Shelley Reneé Squier-Baker and husband, Richard; son Eric Clifton Squier and wife, Brandy; sisters, Nancy Gayle Helmcamp and husband, Terry, Rhonda Faye Howell and husband, Ronnie; grandchildren, Erica Lynn Squier, Breck Avery Squier, Cayde Austin Squier; nephews, Jonathan Helmcamp, Jeff Helmcamp, Randall Helmcamp; niece, Jennifer Howell; and so many other loving and caring family members and treasured friends beyond measure.

Memorial services were held Sunday, March 16, 2008, 2:00 p.m. at Rural Shade Baptist Church, Cleveland, Texas.

Brumley

Joe Ree Brumley, 80, of Old River, died Tuesday, March 11, 2008. He was born February 17, 1928 in Zowelle, Louisiana to parents Alvin B. and Marie C. Brumley. Mr. Brumley served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II, attended the University of Houston and taught CAD at Lee College. He had lived in the Old River area since 1957 and had been employed by Shell Chemical. He was a member of the Cedar Bayou Masonic Lodge #321, the Midway Baptist Church, the Democratic Party, was an election judge for Chambers County and a draftsman. Mr. Brumley also enjoyed singing and fishing.

Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m., Friday, March 14, 2008 at Palms Memorial Park cemetery with Dr. Phillip Lovin officiating. Visitation for Mr. Brumley will be 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon, Friday at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, Dayton.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Clarence Lee Brumley and Malcolm Alvin Brumley. He is survived by his wife: Elsie Weatherly Brumley of Old River; his daughter: Tamatha Brumley of Old River; step-mother: Jewell Brumley of Leesville, LA; brothers: James Edward Brumley of Shreveport, LA and Kenneth Reid Brumley of Kennethville, LA; sisters: Sandra Tunstal and husband Wayne of Deer Park, Sharon Lauren Moore of Leesville, LA, and Elousure Kathleen Hamlin of Leesville, LA.

Ripkowski

Herman E. Ripkowski, age 85, of Liberty, TX, died Thursday, March 6, 2008, in the East Houston Regional Hospital.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 8, 2008 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 411 Milam Street, Liberty, TX., at 9:00 A. M., with the Reverend David A. Edwards officiating, burial will follow in the Catholic cemetery, Liberty, TX. A visitation will be held on Friday, March 7, 2008 at Allison Funeral Service Chapel from 5:00 P. M. until 8:00 P.M. A Rosary will be said at 7:00 P.M.

Herman was born on October 7, 1922 in New Waverly, TX. to Stash Ripkowski and Mattie Olybrych Ripkowski, and was the eighth child of 16 children. Herman graduated from Dayton High School in 1940 and joined the Army shortly after graduation. He received the Bronze Star while serving in World War II. He married Mary Jane Hartel on August 17, 1954 in Liberty, TX. in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, and the family made the Church and Liberty their home. He was in sales, and sold almost everything. He was active in the Knights of Columbus, Dayton American Legion Post 512 and the Liberty Senior Citizens Activity Center. He enjoyed playing cards, dominoes, working in his yard, watching sports of all kind, and especially the Texas Longhorns, the Houston Astros and the Houston Rockets.

Herman is preceded in death by his parents, a sister: Virginia Carter, six brothers: Bernie, Felix, August, Bill, Raymond, and Stanley Ripkowski.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Mary Jane Hartel Ripkowski of Liberty, TX.; two sons: Artie Ripkowski of Baytown, TX., and David and his wife, Natalie Ripkowski of Dayton, TX.; two daughters: Jo Beth Shealy of Atlanta, GA, and Amy and her husband, Russell Boles of Liberty, TX., Seven grandchildren: Alan and Justin Boles, Heather and Brad Ripkowski, Nicole and Austin Shealy and Amber Wilson; five brothers: Alex, Leon, John, Mike, and Franklin Ripkowski, and three sisters: Catherine Machala, Pearline Tilton and Anna Lee Campbell, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and other family members and a host of friends also survive.

Pallbearers will be: Joey Root, Jay Root, Blake Patterson, Josh Cross, Randy Ripkowski, Franklin Ripkowski, Greg Ripkowski and Jake Vaught. The honorary pallbearers are the Liberty Seniors Citizen Poker Club, Tommy Chambers, Josh White, Jack Hartel, Trey Howse, David Leonard, Josh Sadler, and John Hebert. Herman will be missed by all who knew him.

Family has requested donations to be made in his honor to the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church % Alter Society, 411 Milam, Liberty, TX 77575.

Chenevert

A Mass of Christian Burial for Yvonne M. Chenevert, 68, of Houston, Texas, will be held Saturday, March 15, 2008 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Anne DeBeaupre Catholic Church, 2810 Link Road, Houston, Texas with the Reverend Father Oliver Obele M. S. P., Celebrant with burial in Paradise North cemetery, Houston, Texas.

A native of Rayne, Louisiana, she was a maintenance worker for Cypress Fair Independent School District and a member of St. Anne DeBeaupre.

She died March 7, 2008 at St. Luke Hospital after an illness.

Visitation will be held at the church from 9 A M until time of service.

She is survived by her husband, Hudspeth Daniel Chenevert of Houston; one son: Pierre Martin of Houston, Texas; two brothers: Eddie Bernard of Rayne, Louisiana, and Darrell Bernard of Crowley, Louisiana; two sisters: Helen Bernard and Janelle Bernard both of Rayne, Louisiana, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Williamson

Harvey Williamson, age 91, died Monday at his home.

He was born in Hull, June 10, 1916 the son of the late Garland and Clementine Vanya Williamson. He was a lifelong farmer and rancher in the Hardin area. He was best known for his fiddle playing and his love of dancing.

He was preceded in death by his brothers Cliff, Bea, Bun, Press and his sister Audrey.

He leaves behind his devoted wife Louella (Fregia) Williamson, son Harvey G. Williamson and his wife Patty, daughters Carolyn Wakefield and Darlene Alford. His three grandsons; Chris Williamson, Cliff Williamson and Charlie Wakefield. In addition he also leaves his great grandchildren, Reagan Williamson, Cooper Williamson, and Colton Williamson as well as a host of other family and friends.

Visitation will be held 5-8pm Wednesday at Allison Funeral Service, 1101 N. Travis, Liberty. Funeral services to be held 10am Thursday at Mount Calvary Baptist Church, Moss Hill with burial to follow in Moss Hill cemetery.
