GILMER - Services for Shirley "Jem" Marchland, 53, of Gilmer will be held at 10 a.m. today, March 20, at Grubbs-Loyd Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Michael Dickey officiating. Burial will be in Youngblood cemetery in Beckville. Mrs. Marchland died Wednesday, March 18, 1998, in Tyler. Born Sept. 1, 1944 in Panola County, Texas, she was a homemaker. Mrs. Marchland is survived by four sons, Chris Marchland and James Young, both of Gilmer, and Patrick Young and Tony Dotson, both of Beckville; a daughter, K.C. Blalack of Gilmer; five grandchildren; three brothers, Joe Kelley and John Kelley, both of Beckville, and Tommy Rushing of Hallsville; and three sisters, Joyce Drew of San Antonio and Dottie Kelley and LaViolet Wilkinson, both of Beckville.

Burial will be at Mt. Moriah cemetery, directed by Reeder-Davis Funeral Home. Mr. Mathis died Sunday in Hughes Springs. He was born July 3, 1963, in Hughes Springs. Burial will follow under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Longview. Miss Moore was born Feb. 17, 1942, in Texarkana, Texas. She had been a resident of Longview since 1987, coming from Texarkana. She was a member of the Rosehill Baptist Church in Texarkana. She is survived by her mother, Ollie Moore of Longview; a sister, Joy Moore Shanks of Longview; a brother and sister-in-law, Harry M. and Tina Moore of Longview; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Norris died Tuesday, March 17, 1998, in a local hospital. She was born in Republic, Mo., and had been a resident of Longview since 1957. Mrs. Norris was a homemaker and a member of the Macedonia Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wylie Norris, in 1993. Mrs. Norris is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Dixie and Bill Watson and Janet Muegge of Longview; a sister, Lois Joplin of Kansas; three grandchildren and their spouses, LuAnn and David Hickey of Tyler, Debbie and Gary Durbin of Littleton, Colo., and Steve and Jana Marr of Kingwood; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at 6 p.m. today, March 20, at Welch Funeral Home.

Services for Johnny R. "J.R." Portley of Wichita, Kan., formerly of Longview, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 20, at the St. Matthew C.M.E. Church of Wichita, Kan. Jackson Mortuary of Wichita is in charge of arrangements. Local arrangements are by Craig Funeral Home. Mr. Portley passed away Tuesday, March 17, 1998, after a lengthy illness. He was retired from Boeing Aircraft. He is survived by his wife, Mary; a son, David; his daughters, Jacinda "Nell" and Debra; a brother, Milton Portley of Longview; his sisters Leatha Colbert, Bernice Green, Lola Templeton and Deborah Portley, all of Longview, and his sister Pearlie Johnson of Houston;11 grandchildren; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

William Avis Ray
GILMER - Services for William Avis Ray, 77, of Gilmer will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 21, at Croley Funeral Home Chapel in Gilmer with Charles Turner and Elwyn Snow officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill cemetery. Mr. Ray died Wednesday, March 18, 1998, in Tyler. He was born Jan. 25, 1921, in Upshur County, Texas, where he lived most of his life. He was a truck driver and a member of Pritchett Church of Christ. Mr. Ray served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Luretta Ray of Shady Grove; son, Lynn Ray of Gilmer; daughter, LeAnn Nash of Texarkana, Texas; stepdaughters, Wanda Denton and Kathy Gage, both of Shady Grove; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brother, Claude Ray Jr. of Pritchett; and sister, Juanita Bullard of Hitchcock.

Funeral services for Mildred Julia Stubbs will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 21, 1998, at Winterfield United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ed Barlow officiating. Interment will follow at Memory Park cemetery under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Longview. Family members will be receiving friends this evening from 6 to 8 at the funeral home. A lifetime resident of Longview, Julia was born Oct. 3, 1920, to Rod and Harriet Bardwell. For much of her life she was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Daughters of the Nile. She was a lifetime member of the Winterfield United Methodist Church. A devoted wife and mother, Julia will be most remembered for her dedication to family and friends. She was a generous contributor to many philanthropic organizations. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Art Stubbs; a daughter, Jeanene Black of Hallsville; a son, Danny Black of Longview; a daughter, Harriet "Connie" Mijalis of Longview; a daughter and son-in-law, LaJean and Daniel Sturman of Fort Worth; and a sister and brother, Evie Ponder and Bedford Bardwell, both of Longview. Julia was blessed with eight grandchildren and with 11 great-grand- children. She will be greatly missed. Services for Raymond Sypert, 78, of Hallsville will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 21, at the Rader Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Mills officiating. Burial will be at the Hallsville cemetery. Mr. Sypert died Thursday morning, March 19, 1998, in Longview. He was born March 26, 1919, in Hallsville and was a lifelong resident there. Mr. Sypert was a Baptist and a self-employed carpenter and builder. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army Air Corps. He is survived by a brother, Claude Sypert of Longview; four sisters, Ruth White of Mineola, Louise Aposhian of Salt Lake City, Mildred Curry of Beaumont and Daisy Nell Trivett of Matthews, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. today, March 20, at Rader Funeral Home in Longview.

He was born March 10, 1928, in Gilmer and was a self-employed carpenter and a veteran of the U.S. Army. Mr. Gamage is survived by a son, Larry Gamage of California; a daughter, Carla Faye of Spring; two grandchildren; a brother, Zellwood Gamage of Groves; a sister, Hazel Morrison of San Marcos; and several nieces and nephews.
