SAN BENITO, TX — Manuel G. Rodriguez Jr., 47, passed away at a local hospital on November 25, 2001.

Mr. Rodriguez is survived by his wife, Ernestina Torrez, Rodriguez and his mother, Elena Santiago; two daughters, Cynthia Rodriguez and Sandra (Juan) Maldonado; 6 nephews; 3 stepdaughters, and 4 step sons; brothers and sisters, Alisia (Daniel) Casarez of Georgia, Otilio (Socorro) Rodriguez of CD. Victoria, Tamp, Mex., Inocensio (Rosa) Rodriguez of San Benito, Ofelia Lopez of San Benito, Jose A. (Berta) Rodriguez of Florida, Sylvia Rodriguez of San Benito, Carlos (Marie) Santiago of San Benito, and Dora (Carlos) Garcia, of San Benito.

A Holy Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Tuesday, November 27, 2001 at Thomae Garza Funeral Chapel.

Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 28, 2001 at St. Benedicts Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Funeral arrangements entrusted to the care of Thomae Garza Funeral Directors, San Benito, 399-1331.

Ramona Sosa

HARLINGEN, TX — Ramona Sosa, 47, entered into rest on November 24, 2001.

One son, Mark Sosa; father, Feliciano Lopez, and two brothers, Ignacio Lopez and Alejo Lopez preceded her in death.

She is survived by her mother, Maria Martha D. Lopez of Harlingen; 4 sons, Gilbert Sosa Jr. (Beth), Michael Sosa, Abel Sosa, Eloy Sosa all of Harlingen. She is also survived by four sisters, Isabel Nunez (Santos) of Florida, Paula Vega, Juanita Sanchez of Illinois, Maria Hernandez of Florida; two brothers, Antonio Lopez, Juan Lopez of Harlingen; 4 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held yesterday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m.

The funeral service will be held today, November 27, 2001 at 3 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Angels in Harlingen with Pastor Alfonso Vergara officiating.

A graveside service will be held Friday, November 30, 2001 at 9 a.m. at Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen.

Jesus E. Garza

RAYMONDVILLE, TX — Mr. Jesus E. Garza, 71, entered into rest Sunday, November 25, 2001 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, TX.

He was born November 27, 1930 in Alamo,  Texas to Alejos and Anestacia (Esparza) Garza. He lived in Willacy, County all his life.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, at 2 p.m., November 27th, at Palabra De Fe A Las Naciones in Raymondville with Elias Juarez officiating. Burial will follow at the Raymondville Memorial Park Cemetery.

Hs is survived by his wife, Ester Garza of Raymondville; three daughters, Lorie (Ruben) Hernandez of Las Cruses, N.M; Marta (Enrique) Nieto of San Perlita and Eduvina (Robert) Montalvo of Raymondville; one brother, Filiberto Garza of Raymondville; four sisters, Lydia Lopez, Francis Garza, and Guadalupe Garza all of Raymondville and Eva Alcasar of Leveland, TX. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his son, Alejandro Garza in 1985.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Duddlesten Funeral Home.

Alice Joyce Kilbourn

CORPUS CHRISIT — Alice Joyce Kilbourn was born in Oil City,  Louisiana, on May 17,1920. Joyce moved several times in her childhood, growing up in Livingston,  Texas, where she called home til moving to Corpus Christi, to work at the military base repairing war time aircraft. She later joined the WAC’s during World War II, serving in the 69th Hospital Company until February 1946.

Joyce was married to Kirk Herbert Kilbourn on January 8, 1950 in Corpus Christi,  Texas. They resided in Santa Rosa,  Texas, until 1989, when they moved to Corpus Christi, due to illness. While in Santa Rosa, Joyce gave birth to two children, Walter Ray and Patsy Ruth. While in Santa Rosa they were members of the First Baptist Church.

She is survived by her children, a son, Walter Ray Kilbourn of Corpus Christi and a daughter, Patsy Ruth Owens of the Woodlands; a sister, Lee Smith of Corpus Christi; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Her husband, Kirk Kilbourn; her parents, Arcola Jane and William Moore; a sister, Cookie, two brothers, Bill and Johnny Moore preceded her in death.

A visitation will be held Monday, November 26, 2001, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. with family receiving friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Services will be held Tuesday, November 27, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Kreidler-Ashcraft Funeral Chapel. Burial to follow at Restlawn Memorial Park.

Arrangements are under the direction of Kreidler-Ashcraft Funeral Directors. 1002 E. Harrison, Harlingen,  Texas (956) 423-4141.

Frazier A. Treadaway Jr.

WESLACO — Frazier A. Treadaway, Jr., 74, passed away November 22, 2001 at Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen, TX. Frazier was born August 2, 1927, in Victoria, TX. He was a businessman in Weslaco for 31 years and a member of the Weslaco Elks Lodge for 23 years. He served his country during W.W. II in the U.S. Army.

He was preceded in death by his father, Frazier Treadaway, Sr.; his mother, Edith Jordan Treadaway; brother, Joseph Treadaway; and a sister, Sally Easley.

Mr. Treadaway is survived by his wife of 52 years, Marjorie Scott Treadaway; two sons, David Treadaway of Victoria, TX, and Richard Treadaway of Spicewood, TX; three daughters, Peggy Anderson of Tyler, Terry Hoverson of Odem, Phoebe Weise of Seguin; three grandchildren, Eric and Cassie Hoverson of Odem, and Megan Treadaway of Victoria. Also surviving Mr. Treadaway are two sisters, Ann Arnold and Nan Sullivan of Victoria.

Memorial service will be conducted Tuesday, November 27, 2001 at 11 a.m. at McCaleb Funeral Home Chapel by the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Weslaco Lodge #2057. Interment will follow at a later date in Victoria,  Texas.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco.

Maria Trevino

PRIMERA — Maria Trevino, 64, of Primera,  Texas, passed away into eternal sleep at Valley Baptist Medical Center on November 23, 2001.

She is survived by her husband, Juan Trevino Sr. of Primera; two daughters, Sandra Trevino of Primera and Oralia Aldaba of Harlingen; five sons, Juan Trevino Jr., Omero Trevino, Antonio Trevino, Felipe Trevino, and Cesar Trevino, all of Primera; 16 grandchildren; 1 great granddaughter; and one brother, Justo De La Cruz Lopez of Linares, Nuevo Leon Mexico.

She was a resident of Primera,  Texas, since 1955 and a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church.

Pallbearers will be Juan Trevino Jr., Omero Trevino, Antonio Trevino, Felipe Trevino, Cesar Trevino, and Armando De La Cruz.

Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday, November 25, 2001, in Chapel A. and a rosary will be conducted at 7 p.m. The funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. on Monday, November 26, 2001 at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, interment will follow to Mont Meta Restlawn Cox Memorial Park in La Feria,  Texas.

Rosa L. Garcia

HARLINGEN — Mrs. Rosa L. Garcia, 90, native of Los Ramones, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, and a longtime resident of Harlingen, entered into eternal rest on November 23, 2001 at Northeast Baptist Hospital in San Antonio,  Texas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Lalo S. Garcia and her mother, Mrs. Gertrudis Lopez.

She is survived by son, Joe L. (Rose) Garcia of Corpus Christi, TX.; daughters, Mary G. (Hector M.) Trevino of San Antonio, TX., and Mona G. (Enrique S.) Gonzalez of San Antonio, TX.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several cousins and nieces from Harlingen, TX., Monterrey and Nuevo Leon , Mexico.

A rosary was held on Sunday, November 25, 2001, at Garza-Elizondo Funeral Chapel. A mass will be held today, November 26, at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Fr. Craig Carolan officiating.

Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park, La Feria, TX.

Pallbearers include Phillip Castaneda, A.J. Garcia, Rene Gonzalez, Roberto Lopez, Jr., Rick Salinas, and Michael Trevino.

Funeral Services are under the direction of Garza Elizondo Funeral Home, Member of Protecto Deco, 209 W.  Taylor St., Harlingen,  Texas (956-423-5353)

Richard Kapraun

WESLACO — Richard Kapraun, 93, entered into rest November 22, 2001. He was born June 18, 1908, to Henry Kapraun and Katherine Appel Kapraun.

He worked as a mechanic in the Putnam and Henry IL. area before retiring to Weslaco, TX., in 1979.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Katherine Kapraun; two brothers, Connie and Fritz Kapraun; three sisters, Gertrude (Geo) Mattern, Elizabeth (Harvy) Klein, and Edith Kapraun.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Kapraun of Weslaco; son, Henry Kapraun of Putnam, IL.; daughter, Katherine (Gene) Damalas of Elkhart, IN.; three grandchildren, Kim Damalas of Colorado Springs, CO., Kris Damalas of Seattle, WA., and John Damalas of Elkhart, IN.

Visitation will be at Hawkins Funeral Home in Weslaco, on Sunday, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. with a rosary at 4 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Mercedes at 10 a.m., Monday November 26, 2001. Interment and graveside services will be at Calvary City Cemetery in Henry, IL.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Hawkin’s Funeral Home.

Dessie "Dixie" Hobbs

HARLINGEN — Dessie "Dixie" Hobbs, formerly of Los Fresnos, peacefully passed away on Friday, November 23, 2001 at the age of 83. Dixie was a retired Special Education teacher for San Benito for more than 25 years. She held a Masters Degree in Special Ed., and a minor in Biology from  Texas A&M University in Kingsville. She was very active in Kappa Kappa Iota, serving as President for several terms. She enjoyed teaching and gardening. She will be remembered for her "happy go lucky", carefree attitude in life.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kyle Hobbs in 1989; and three children, David, Terry, and Diane. She is survived by eight children, Kyle Jr., of Ohio, Stanley Pat of Rancho Viejo, Sue Langely of  Oklahoma, David Mangrum of  Oklahoma, Kay Lynn Peace of Nashville, Margo Saxon of California, Tim of San Antonio, and Sam of  Washington; 15 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

No local services will be held. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Evangel Assembly of God Church in Muskogee, OK., under the direction of Reed Culver Funeral Home in Taliquah, OK.

All memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimers Association, at The RGV Chapter, 1000 Camelot Dr. Suite 6005, Harlingen,  Texas.

All local arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Blanche Wells

WESLACO — Blanche Wells, widow of Ferris T. Wells, co-founder of Wells of Weslaco, 92, passed away November 24, 2001 at John Knox Medical Center in Weslaco.

Visitation will be held Monday, November 26, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco.

Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, November 27, 2001 at 2 p.m. at the First Christian Church in Weslaco. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home in Weslaco.

Esther Ruby Stafford Smith

GOLIAD, TX — Esther Ruby Stafford Smith, 99, made her transition from this life on November 23, 2001 at La Bahia Nursing Center in Goliad,  Texas. Esther was born July 8, 1902, in Bluff City, Kansas to the late Daniel Wayne and Lula Dell Stafford.

Esther married the late Herbert Whitfield Smith on January 30, 1924 in Harlingen. This union produced five children, their only son, Herbert W. Smith Jr., who passed away in 1954; their first born Cordelia Lou Johnson, who passed away in 1992; grandsons, Larry Jardee, who passed away April 13, 1997 and Gordon Philip Johnson, who passed away September 7, 2001. Surviving daughters, Wilma Iris Clark, of Mobile AL., Dee Dee McArthur and husband Bob of San Antonio, and Billie Faye Harris and husband Jimmie of Victoria; sisters are, Hazel Smith of Rockport,  Texas, Yuma Lee of San Benito, Mabel Hall of Brownsville, and Isola Colberg of Alta Loma, CA. Esther was blessed with nine grandchildren, Rebecca J.  Johnson of San Antonio, Jerry Jardee of Port Lavaca,  Texas, Carol Lou (Bill) Pavelka of Mobile, AL., Dianne (Don) Keller of Katy,  Texas, Gary Sawyer of San Antonio, Randolph (Sheree) Sawyer of San Antonio, Charissa (Bill) Ragsdale of Tulsa, OK., Julie "Harris" (Michael) Wolf of Lakeway,  Texas, and Jamie (Kelly) Flanagan of Pearland,  Texas; also 15 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren. Esther was a Methodist, and held many offices in the Women’s Society. Esther resided in her home in Combes until 1994, when she went to live with her daughter, Billie Faye and Jimmie Harris, in Victoria,  Texas. Visitation hours will be Sunday, November 25, 2001 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. in Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held Monday, November 26, 2001 at 10 a.m. in Mont Meta Memorial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Gilberto Resendez

SAN BENITO — Gilberto Resendez, born August 27, 1948, passed away Saturday morning, November 24, 2001, at Valley Baptist Medical Center. He was a life long resident of San Benito.

After serving in the U.S. Air Force for six years, and also a Vietnam veteran, he was employed by KGBT-TV as an engineer.

Gilbert is survived by his wife, Maria Elena Resendez; daughter, Laura Resendez; sons, Marc and Adrian Resendez, Roberto (Elena) Aldape, and Freddy Aldape; his parents, Juan and Josefa Resendez; brothers, Raul (Teresa) Resendez and Ruben Resendez; sisters, Juanita (Ernesto) Vasquez, Olivia (Joe) Martinez, Gloria Gil, and Irma Resendez; 36 nieces and nephews.

Gilberto is preceded in death by his brother, Roberto Resendez.

Pallbearers are, Raul, Ruben, and Marc Resendez, Freddy Aldape, Danny Gil, and Jeremy Martinez.

Honorary Pallbearers are Bobby Zamora and Rex Resendez.

A holy rosary will be held on Sunday November 25, 2001 and Monday November 26, 2001, at Thomae Garza Funeral Chapel at 7 p.m. Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, November 27, 2001 at St. Benedict’s Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Thomae Garza Funeral Directors, San Benito, 399-1331.

Maria Luisa Atkinson

RIO HONDO — Maria Luisa Atkinson, 51, and a lifelong resident of Rio Hondo passed away on Thursday, November 22, 2001.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Christobal and San Juanita Zepeda and two brothers, Freddy and Manuel Zepeda.

She is survived by her fiancée Mayo Villafranca of Harlingen; four daughters, San Juanita Atkinson, Tamara (Ralph) Zapata of Rio Hondo, Nancy (Miguel) Gonzalez of San Benito, Marcelita Atkinson and her fiancée, Roy Rodriguez of Brownsville; three sons, Rogelio Atkinson, Jesus Atkinson, Jr. and his fiancée, Lori Moreno, and Demetrio Atkinson, all of Rio Hondo; one brother, Enrique Zepeda of Harlingen; two sisters, Ninfa (Adan) Atkinson of Rio Hondo and Guadalupe (Antonio) Rios of Harlingen; 11 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held today, November 25, 2001 from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. and Monday November 26, 2001 from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. with a rosary prayed at 7 p.m. at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace in Harlingen. The funeral procession will depart the Rudy Garza Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 27, 2001 at 12:30 p.m. for a 1 p.m. Mass of Christian burial at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church, interment will follow at Ashland Memorial Park Cemetery in Harlingen.

Pallbearers will be family members.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen.
