Rosa M. Cruz

HARLINGEN — Rosa M. Cruz, 81, entered the Lord’s Kingdom Friday evening March 22, 2002 at her residence in the presence of her loving husband and family. Mrs. Cruz was a lifetime resident of Harlingen.

She is preceded in death by a daughter Fela M. Valdez. Survivors include her loving husband Aurelio Cruz of Harlingen; daughter Laura M. Fraga (Daniel) of Harlingen; son-in-law Juan Valdez of Harlingen; one brother Jose Galvez of Baja, California; and 9 grandchildren, Frank (Mary) Valdez, Johnny (Mary) Valdez, Abraham (Crystal) Valdez, Oscar (Anna) Valdez, Efrain (Eva) Valdez, Mary (Alfredo) Cruz, Lupita (Delfino) Diaz, Cassandra Fraga, Elvira Fraga; 16 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

Visitation will be held today, Sunday, March 24, 2002 from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a holy rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral mass will be celebrated Monday, March 25, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Matt Shanley as celebrant. Burial will follow to Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel, 1217 South F Street, Harlingen,  Texas.

Ezequiel "Zeke" Reyna

MCALLEN — Ezequiel Reyna, 46, passed away Saturday, March 23, 2002 after a struggle with cancer. Born in Rio Hondo, he lived most of his life in the Valley.

Zeke will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ezequiel Reyna, Sr.

Zeke is survived by his wife Jessie and children, Lydia (Lily) and Nicholas Reyna; his mother, Lydia Guajardo Reyna; his brothers and sisters, Janie, Rosendo, Evan, Ernest, Eliazar, Dalia, Homer and Yolanda.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 24, 2002 at San Benito Funeral Home from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m.

Funeral mass will be held on Monday, March 25, 2002 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Los Fresnos at 11:00 a.m. with interment to follow at San Vicente Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of San Benito Funeral Home, San Benito, TX.

Luther Bailey

MCALLEN — Luther Bailey, 71, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 21, 2002.

He is preceded in death by his wife Gladys Bailey; infant son Richard Dean; and brothers Melvin, Ralph, Dave, Robert, and Charlie Bailey.

He is survived by a son, Joe Bailey of Watauga; and a daughter, Phamie Finch of Forth Worth; brothers, J.B. Bailey of Waco, Jack Bailey of Houston, Joe Bailey of Delano, California; asisters, Marie Barfield of Haltom City, Betty Koon, and Carolyn Zapata of Waco; 6 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Luther Bailey moved his family to the Rio Grande Valley in 1954 and has resided in San Juan since 1962. He owned and operated a painting and roofing business for more than 50 years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and a member of the First Baptist Church of San Juan for more than 30 years.

Visitation will be held in McAllen,  Texas at the Virgil Wilson Mortuary on Sunday, March 24, 2002 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 25, 2002 at the Virgil Wilson Memorial Chapel in McAllen with interment to follow at Palm Valley Memorial Mausoleum in Pharr. Funeral arrangements and services are under the direction of Virgil Wilson Mortuary of McAllen.

Mrs. Edna O. Gaytan

HARLINGEN, TX — Mrs. Edna O. Gaytan, 51, a native of Rio Hondo,  Texas and a longtime resident of Harlingen,  Texas entered into eternal rest on March 21, 2002 after a lengthy illness.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Esteban Ochoa and Audelia Gonzalez Ochoa and a brother, Esteban Ochoa, Jr.

Mrs. Gaytan is survived by her husband, Alberto J. Gaytan of Harlingen,  Texas; son, Juan Alberto Gaytan, Jr. of Harlingen,  Texas; daughter, Patricia Ann Gaytan of Harlingen,  Texas; brother, Mike (Hilda) Ochoa of Rio Hondo,  Texas; sisters, Santa Rodriguez of Harlingen and Corina (Richard) Gomez of Rio Hondo,  Texas.

Visitation was held Friday, March 22, 2002 at Garza Elizondo Chapel of Memories with a Prayer Service at 7 p.m.

Funeral services will be today, Saturday, March 23, 2002 at La Trinidad Assembly of God Church in Rio Hondo at 10 a.m. with Pastor Nestor Bazan officiating.

The Funeral Procession will depart from Garza Elizondo Funeral Home at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Guadalupe Cemetery in Sebastian,  Texas.

Pallbearers will be Michael Perez, Michael Rodriguez, Ramiro Rodriguez, Jr., Cisco Layton, Roman Perez and Mike Ochoa, Jr.

Funeral services under the direction of Garza Elizondo Funeral Home, Member of Protecto Deco, 209 W.  Taylor St., Harlingen,  Texas. (956) 423-5353.

Pedro Perez, Jr.

SEBASTIAN, TX — Pedro Perez, Jr., 51, passed away Friday, March 22, 2002 at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, TX.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, 2 p.m., March 23, 2002 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Lyford with Fr. Dave  Jackson officiating.

A Rosary will be Friday 8 p.m., at Duddlesten Chapel. Burial will follow at the Guadalupe Cemetery in Sebastian.

He is survived by his mother, Maria Anguiano Birkhofer of Lamarque, TX; two brothers, Mario John Perez of Houston and Benito Perez of Lamarque, TX; four sisters, Berta Perez of Pasadena, TX, Cristina Perez of Laporte, TX, Matilda Carmela Hernandez of Webster, TX and Angela Maria Pina of Lamarque, TX.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Duddlesten Funeral Home.

Wilfred Bachmeier

HARLINGEN, TX — Wilfred "Bill" Bachmeier, 70, passed away Sunday, October 6, 2002 at Harlingen Nursing Center.

Bill was born April 26, 1932 in Emmons County, North Dakota to Carl and Kathryn Bachmeier.

He attended schools in Bismarck, North Dakota, and graduated in 1952 from St. Mary’s Central High School.

He was on the 1951 State Class A Football Championship team and on the 1951 State Class A Basketball team. He also ran track and played on the Junior Legion Baseball team.

He attended North Dakota State University and Bismarck Junior College.

He married Janice Erling on June 9, 1956.

He was employed at the State Training School in Mandan, North Dakota; he was a ranch manager for the Lazy S Ranch in Bismarck, was claims adjuster for Nobel Adjusting, was in insurance sales for Allied Insurance Company in Des Moines, Iowa; transferred to  Texas and employed by St. Paul Insurance Company.

He retired from American States Insurance Company in 1993.

He was enjoying retirement at Stuart Place Country Club and was club house manager for five years; he was also a member of the Elks Lodge.

He is survived by his wife, Janice; daughter and son-in-law, Carrie and Bill Weekley of San Benito; daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Keith Kreeger of Valrico, Florida; five grandchildren, Brittany and Bill Weekley of San Benito, Ryan, Devyn, and Grant Kreeger of Valrico, Florida; two sisters, Helen O’Boyle of Mt. Prospect, Illinois, and Kathy Robb of Des Plaines, Illinois; brother, Mel Bachmeier of San Francisco, California; three nieces and four nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law.

He will be missed by his loving family, his faithful Jack Russell Terrier and all his golfing buddies at Stuart Place Country Club.

"Rest In Peace, My Love, Your Illness Has Ended and HE Is Waiting For You".

A Rosary service will be said at 7 p.m. in Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home Chapel on Friday, October 11, 2002.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, October 12, 2002 at 10 a.m. in Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home Chapel.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or a charity of one’s choice.

Bill’s wish was to be cremated.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

John T. Bryant

HARLINGEN, TX — John Thomas Bryant, 78, passed away Monday, October 7, 2002 at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

John was born April 23, 1924 in Tahoka,  Texas to Benjamin Ezra and Esther Cleo Eldridge Bryant.

He grew up on the plains of west  Texas and moved to the Valley in 1937. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He and the former Vila Naomi Burke were married on June 7, 1945 in Primera.

To them were born two children, John T. Bryant Jr., and Vila Cleo Bryant. John worked as an automotive machinist and for several years owned Bryant’s Rebuild Service.

He worked for Floyd’s Muffler and Parts; and retired from the position of shop manager with Burton Auto Supply in Harlingen.

John served as Pastor of First Baptist Church in Hargil,  Texas; Assistant Pastor at Central Baptist Church in Harlingen; Pastor of Primera Baptist Church; and at the time of his death had been Pastor of Grace Baptist Church in Harlingen for 33 years.

John is survived by his wife of 57 years, Naomi; his son, John of Corpus Christi,  Texas; his daughter, Vila of Frisco,  Texas; his sister, Alma Lee Hamil of Lewisville, KY; seven grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Jo Nell Roden.

Visitation hours will be held Thursday, October 10, 2002 from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. with the family present to receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held Friday, October 11, 2002 at 2 p.m. in Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Combes Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Paul Kuhlman, Timothy Kuhlman, Gary  White, C.W. Burke, Bill O’Donald, and Travis Huggins.

For those desiring to do so, memorials may be made to the Grace Baptist Church in memory of John.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Paulena L. Hines

FLORENCE, CO — Paulena L. Hines, 93, passed away September 9, 2002 in Florence, CO.

A private burial was held September 26, 2002 at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, CO.

Paulena was born in Helena, Missouri where she met the love of her life, Ralph E. Hines.

They married in 1931.

Paulena moved to Woodland Park, CO in 1938 where she became a successful entrepreneur.

She was active in the Woodland Park Baptist Church and she was a devoted wife and mother.

Upon retirement, Paulena moved to the Rio Grande Valley, specifically Harlingen,  Texas where she lived an active life.

She traveled extensively, enjoyed many hobbies including gardening and beachcombing and she loved to entertain and visit with her family and friends.

Last, but certainly not least, Paulena was an active member of the Calvary Baptist Church.

She was a Christian who devoted her life to The Lord Jesus Christ.

Paulena is survived by a son, Victor Hines of Woodland Park; two daughters-in-law, Sandra Hines of Woodland Park and Linda Hines of Topeka, Kansas.

Also, three granddaughters, Tammy, Cindy, and Janine and several great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her spouse, Ralph Hines and one son, Marvin Hines.
