Mary Strickland

LA FERIA, TX — Mary Strickland, 79, passed away Thursday, December 11, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

Mary was born on March 2, 1924 in Waco,  Texas to O.F. and Lillian Ratliff.

She was a housewife, Nurse’s Aid, and retired from Cameron County Tax Office in Harlingen. Mary was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Harlingen.

Mary is survived by her daughters, Patricia (Dennis) Schwartz, and Lynda Lunsford; sons, James (Sharon) Strickland and Robert Strickland; 11 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; brother, Robert (Phyllis) Ratliff; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation hours will be held Sunday, December 14, 2003 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m., Sunday, with Reverend Bill Reagan officiating.

Honorary pallbearers will be Eric Schwartz, Paul Schwartz, Aaron Strickland, Todd Lunsford, Dawson Kornegay, and Mike Till.

For those desiring to do so memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Rosario H. Ruiz

(1915-2003)

LAURELES, TX — Rosario H. Ruiz (Challito) of Laureles,  Texas died on Friday, December 12, 2003. She was born in Doctor Arroyo, Nuevo Leon, Mexico on June 18, 1915 and as a child came to live with her family in the Bishop area, near Corpus Christi. There she met and married Eliseo Ruiz, Sr., and in 1945 the couple moved to the Los Fresnos’ Suburb of Laureles to work alongside their life-long friends Aurora and Manuel Salinas. With her friends’ help, they were able to establish a "mom and pop" country store for the residents around them. For more than 50 years the neighbors and ranchers of the area enjoyed doing business with Challito and her husband and family. They lived in the house behind their store, and there raised their children and became an icon of the community. They finally retired in 1999. Challito was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church.

Challito was a gift of love and tenderness to everyone. She cherished her family and friends and was kind to all around her. She never raised her voice or was harsh to anyone.

She was gentle and at peace at all times.

Family preceding her in death include her husband of 61 years, Eliseo Ruiz, Sr.; her parents, Juan Francisco and Cleotilde Hernandez; her grandson, Rafael Gerardo Ruiz, (son of Eliseo Ruiz, Jr. and Dora); her brother, Juan Hernandez; her sister, Aurora De Leon; her nephew, Amador Ruiz, Jr.; her son-in-law, Curtis Likens; and brothers-in-law, Amador Ruiz, Sr., Meliton Sanchez, Jacinto Ruiz, and Fidel Ruiz.

Challito, or Buni as her grandchildren called her, is survived by sons, Eliseo Ruiz, Jr. (Dora) of Los Fresnos and J. Frank Ruiz (Isaura L. Ruiz), of San Jose Ranch; daughter, Eloisa R. Likens of Weslaco; and daughter, Mary R. Herevia of San Benito. Also surviving are grandchildren, Eliseo Ruiz, III (Sonny) of Dallas; Diana Delinda (Dee Dee) Ruiz of Austin; Brian Curtis Likens of Los Fresnos; Steven Jason Likens of Denver, Colorado; Norma Jean Garcia of Edinburg, and Frankie Ruiz of San Jose Ranch. Her surviving sisters are Bertha Ruiz of San Jose Ranch, Consuelo Sanchez of Benavides,  Texas, Guadalupe Cruz of Pharr; sisters-in-law, Maria R. Hernandez and Uldina Ruiz; closest nieces and nephews, Lupita and Jana Ruiz of San Jose; Inez Soto of Rio Hondo, Molly Cowger of Kingsville, and Robert Ruiz and Joe Ruiz of San Benito; plus many other nieces, nephews and other relatives.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Retama Manor Nursing Center for their love and care during her illness.

A funeral mass in celebration of her life will be held Saturday, December 13, 2003 at 3 p.m. at Santa Cecilia Church in Los Fresnos with Father Joe Villalon as celebrant. That same evening the holy rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. at San Benito Funeral Home 1400 W. Hwy. 77.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, December 14, 2003 at San Benito Funeral Home followed by a procession to Mont Meta Cemetery where she will be interred. Challito’s grandchildren Eliseo "Sonny" Ruiz, III, Dee Dee Ruiz, Norma Ruiz Garcia, Frankie Ruiz, Biran Likens, and Steven Likens will serve as pallbearers.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of San Benito Funeral Home, San Benito,  Texas.

Alberto Gonzalez, Sr.

RIO HONDO, TX — Alberto Gonzalez, Sr., 92, entered into the kingdom of Our Lord Jesus Christ on December 11, 2003 in the loving embrace of his family at his residence.

He was born on April 8, 1911 in Rio Hondo, TX to Juan Crisostomo and Ramona V. Gonzalez, he was a lifetime resident of Rio Hondo, TX and was preceded in death by his wife, Margarita M. Gonzalez.

He is survived by his daughter, Flora Estella (Manuel) Aldape, Rio Hondo, TX; 2 sons, Alberto (Consuelo) Gonzalez, Jr., Rio Hondo, TX, and Roberto (Adela) Gonzalez of Rio Hondo, TX; 5 grandchildren and 1 great grandson; 2 sisters, Hilaria Vasquez, McFarland, California and Manuela Ortega, Lozano, TX.

Pallbearers will be Manuel Aldape III, Juan Aldape, Freddy Gonzalez, III, Jose Gonzales, Esteban Gonzales, and LeRoy Gonzales. Honorary pallbearers will be Rogerio Hinojosa, and Omar Munoz.

Visitation will begin on Saturday, December 13, 2003 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.In the North Chapel and on Sunday, December 14, 2003 from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a Rosary starting at 7 p.m.

The funeral service will be held on Monday, December 15, 2003 at 10 a.m. at St. Helen’s Catholic Church and interment to follow to Anaquitas Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Thomae Garza Funeral Directors, 395 S. Sam Houston Blvd., San Benito,  Texas 78586. 399-1331.

Lelon "Jack" Grandy

HARLINGEN, TX — Lelon "Jack" Grandy, 76, died Thursday, December 11 , 2003, at home, attended by his family.

Born April 14, 1927 in Govenour, New York, Jack spent his adult life in Chicago, where he was married almost 50 years to his late wife, Lorraine. They moved 13 years ago to Harlingen where they enjoyed their retirement as well as the company of their numerous friends.

Survivors include son, Kenneth L. Grandy and wife, Peggy J. Grandy of Chicago, Illinois; daughter, Mary Louise Grandy of Chicago, Illinois and grandchildren, Patrick M. Grandy and Sharron C. Grandy.

Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine; a daughter, Ann Marie Grandy; and a son, Thomas J. Grandy.

The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, December 13, 2003 at Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial donations may be made to Winning Wheels Inc., 701 E. Third, Prophetstown, IL 61277.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.

Amelia Gil Torres

May 12, 1925 – Dec. 10, 2003

HARLINGEN, TX — Life long resident of Harlingen, Amelia was the widowed wife of Jesus V. Torres and mother of nine children, 12 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Amelia became ill in 1993 and was in the care of her son, Luis and daughter-in-law, Rosie Torres, who dedicated their lives to keeping her comfortable throughout the years.

Viewing will be at Garza-Elizondo Funeral Home, 209 W.  Taylor on Friday, December 12, 2003, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a service at 7 p.m.

There will be a mass service at Immaculate Heart of Mary at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 12, 2003.

Amelia will be remembered and missed by all who knew her well. May She Rest In Peace! I Love You Mom!

Claudio L. Salas

SAN BENITO, TX — Claudio Salas, age 77, went home to be with our Lord on December 11, 2003.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Fidel and Agripina Salas. Living wife, Ofelia Salas from San Benito; sons, Pedro (Lidia) Rivera from Harlingen, TX, Claudio Salas Jr., from San Benito, TX, Rene (Dea) Salas from Lewisville, TX; daughters, Gloria Salas, Hammond, IN, Agripina (Jose Lorenzo) Enriquez, Harlingen, TX, Viola (Jimmy Lee) Martinez, Edinburg, TX, Sarah (Roberto) Cervantes, Garland, TX, Silvia (Tony) Garza, San Benito, Martha (Rudy) Gonzales, Harlingen, TX; sister, Juana Salas, San Luis Potosi, MX; his brothers, Lalo Salas, Monterrey, MX, Mauro Salas, Monterrey, MX.

He is also survived by 29 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.

Thanks to all the staff and doctors at Harlingen Medical Center and to Good Samaritan Nursing Home.

Viewing service today, Friday, December 12, 2003, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a Rosary service at 7 p.m.

Church service will be held Saturday, December 13, 2003, at St. Ignatius at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Mont Meta Restlawn Cox Funeral Home.

Guadalupe Flores

COMBES, TX — Guadalupe Flores, 54, entered the Lords heavenly kingdom Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at Valley Baptist Medical Center.

She is survived by her husband, Marco Flores Sr. of Combes; 4 sons, Marco Flores Jr. and Javier Flores both of Harlingen, Manuel Flores and Daniel Flores both of Combes; 2 daughters, Nora Lisa Flores and Jessica Flores also of Combes; parents, Jose Perez and Florentina Lopez of Harlingen; 6 sisters, Teresa Zuniga and Eugenia (Geno) Claveros both of Harlingen, Esmeralda Iboa of CA, Julia Garcia of Weslaco, Elvira Ortiz of Harlingen, and Rosa Lopez of CA; 1 brother, Domitilo Lopez of Matamoros; 8 grandchildren: Rocky Flores, Alyssa Flores, Ruby Flores, Amanda Flores, Javier Flores Jr., Marky Rodriguez, Adin Nathaniel Flores, and Anndi Mari Martinez. Also numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Friday, December 12, 2003 at 2 p.m. at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church with Deacon Manuel Sanchez officiating.

Burial will follow to Combes City Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Marco Flores, Jr., Javier Flores, Manuel Flores, Daniel Flores, Joe Zuniga and Carlos Zuniga.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel 1217 South F. Street Harlingen,  Texas.

Gloria Marroquin

Sept. 12, 1928 – Dec. 10, 2003

RIO HONDO, TX — Prayer service was held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, December 10, 2003 at Thomae Garza Funeral Directors in San Benito,  Texas.

Her body will be laid to rest 3 p.m. at Chamberline Cemetery in Kingsville,  Texas on Friday, December 12, 2003.

She was born on September 12, 1928 in Kingsville,  Texas, to the late Jose (Pepe) and Feliciana (Chata) Gonzales. Gloria was the oldest of their two children. Her brother, Jose preceded her in death.

Gloria leaves behind her beloved husband, Ernesto Marroquin Sr.; daughter, Mary (Elias) Villarreal, Jose (Sharon) Marroquin, Ernest (Blanca) Marroquin and Mario (Mary) Marroquin. She is further survived by her twelve grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.

You have delivered my soul from death, my eyes from tears, and my feet from falling. I will walk before the Lord in the land of the living.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Thomae Garza Funeral Directors 395 S. Sam Houston, San Benito,  Texas 956-399-1331.

Maria Isabel Granado

HARLINGEN, TX — Maria Isabel Granado, 106, entered into the Lords Heavenly Kingdom Thursday, December 11, 2003 at her residence.

She was born in 1897 to Romulo and Juanita Montano. Born in Monterrey, Mexico she resided in Harlingen most of her life.

She is preceded in death by her daughter, Josefa Granado in 2002.

She is survived by 3 sons: Valentine Granados of Tampico, Mexico, Apolinar Granado of Brownsville, and Vicente Granado of Harlingen; 15 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, and 10 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held today December 12, 2003 at 11:30 am at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Fr. Eusebio Martinez officiating.

Burial will follow to Restlawn Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Trinity Funeral Chapel 1217 South F. Street Harlingen,  Texas.

Concepcion E. Garza

HARLINGEN, TX — Concepcion E. Garza, 79, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 9, 2003. She was a loving wife, mother, and devoted grandmother who will be greatly missed.

Concepcion is survived by her son, Jimmy (Irma) Garza of Rio Grande City; sister, Emelia Casanova of Lubbock; brother, Jesus Enriquez of San Benito; grandchildren, Jimmy (Joanna) Garza Jr., Rachelle Garza, Elizabeth Garza, Omar Baltazar (Ester) Garza, Freddy Ali Garza, Albert Ali Garza; great grandchildren, Lauren and Omar Garza; and numerous nephews and nieces.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Baltazar O. Garza; and her brother, Refugio Enriquez.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, December 11, 2003 at Garza Elizondo Funeral Home with a rosary to be held at 7 p.m.

Funeral service will be officiated by Deacon Juan Valenzuela at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church at 10 a.m. on Friday, December 12, 2003, with interment to follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito.

Funeral services are under the direction of Garza Elizondo Funeral Home.

Bueford Regen Moody

HARLINGEN, TX — Bueford Regen Moody, 89, passed away Sunday, December 7, 2003 at 6:25 p.m. at Harlingen Medical Center. Mr. Moody was born on March 18, 1914 in Ada,  Oklahoma to Maggie Lou Rogers Moody and Byron Regen Moody.

Bueford was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Corine Rieman-schneider Moody of Victory, TX on march 14, 2001. Bueford was married to Corine Moody on September 10, 1937 in Jennings,  Louisiana. They moved to Refugio, TX in 1953, where Bueford worked for Humble (Exxon) Oil Company for 35 years upon retirement. They later moved to La Feria, TX in 1971 where they farmed. Bueford loved to fish and hunt every chance he had, and spent numerous hours and days at the ranch. In 1997, they moved to Harlingen, TX.

Bueford is survived by his three brothers, Herbert Moody of Edna, TX, Jowell Moody of McAlester, OK, and Paul Moody of Edmond, OK; three sisters, Gladys McLendon of Longview, TX, Otha Nelson of Longview, TX, and Virginia Piepke of Pauls Valley, OK. He is also survived by one son, Bueford "Buddy" Charlie Moody and wife, Jaqueline P. of Harlingen; daughter, Laquanna Faye Rogers and husband, Larry of Harlingen; seven grandchildren, Jonathan R. Moody, Trey D. Moody, Heather M. Helmer, Joshua R. Moody, Matthew B. Moody, Laura F. Wimberly, and Lynn F. Welty; and six great grandchildren.

A Memorial service will be held Friday, December 12, 2003 at First Baptist Church in La Feria at 10 a.m. with Reverend Bill Slaughter officiating.

In lieu of flowers please make donations to the First Baptist Church of La Feria.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Buck Ashcraft Funeral Home.
