Mr. Christensen
Robert Elwood Green Christensen, 80, of Beeville died on Monday, April 30, 2007, in San Antonio.
He was born June 26, 1926, in Annapolis, Md. He graduated from Annapolis High School in 1943 and served as a seaman first class in the Navy from 1943 to 1946. He fought in the South Pacific, most notably at Iwo Jima, and was the landing craft driver for Gen. Douglas MacArthur during the Philippine liberation. He received the World War II Victory Medal, the Philippine Presidential Unit Citation and the Navy Occupation Medal. From 1947 to 1972 he held various positions in the public works department at the Naval Academy, and from 1972 to 1978 was general foreman of public works at Subic Bay in the Philippines. From 1978 to 1988 he was director of public works at Naval Air Station Chase Field.
Mr. Christensen was vice president of the Philippine/American Association and was named an honorary Seabee. He was also a lifetime member of the Elks and belonged to the Veterans of the USS John Land and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. An avid sports fan, especially of the  Washington Redskins, he also enjoyed travel, good food and meeting new people.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Chance, Wheatley and Realto Christensen; and one sister, Christie Handy.
Survivors include his wife, Sally Christensen; and one daughter, Maria Christensen Elliott of San Antonio.
Funeral services were held at 12:30 p.m. Friday, May 4, at  Taylor Funeral Home in Annapolis, Md. Burial followed at Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville, Md. Online condolences may be made at www.johnmtaylorfuneralhome.com.

Mrs. Ham
Shirley Ruth Ham, 70, of Locker community died on Monday, April 30, 2007, in Whitsett.
Mrs. Ham was born on Nov. 13, 1936, in the Blackjack community, Cherokee County,  Texas, to Bertha Mae Cumi Weaver and Elmo Ross Deckert. She was raised in Pleasanton, where she attended Pleasanton ISD. She married Clarence William Ham in San Antonio on Feb. 13, 1954. She retired in September 2005 from San Saba ISD. Mrs. Ham enjoyed being a member of the San Saba Garden Club and loved nature. She was also a member of The Father’s House church and the Senior Citizen Center.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Ritha Earl Ham; and two sisters, Barbara Louise Thompson and Earlene Cumi Deckert.
Survivors include her husband, Clarence Ham; three children, Clarise Mae Kehoe of Kerrville, Clay William Ham and daughter-in-law Joyanne of Sugarcreek, Ohio, and Dennis Wayne Ham and daughter-in-law Liz of Locker community; one grandson, Shawn David Ham; and two granddaughters, Alena Morris and Anessa Ayers.
Visitation was held from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Galloway & Sons Funeral Home in Three Rivers. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday at Whitsett Baptist Church in Whitsett with Rev. John Work and Rev. Tom Brand officiating. A second service was held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Howell Doran Funeral Home in San Saba. Interment was at Locker Cemetery in Locker community.
Pallbearers for the first service were Alan Everett, Stephen Henderson, Martin Thompson III, Bill Kehoe, Mike Treat and Tony Dickens. Pallbearers for the second service were Bill Kehoe, Nelson Everett, Alan Everett, Stephen Henderson, Kenny Ham, Wayne Greenwood, Jeffrey Bates and Jack Huff.

Mrs. Hull
Billie Jean Hull, 74, died on Monday, May 7, 2007, in George West.
She was born to Berlin Caruthers and Mildred Newman on July 8, 1932, in Rossville. She married David A. Hull in George West. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in George West and was a motel owner-operator.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a grandson, Jason Keever.
Survivors include her husband, David A. Hull of George West; four daughters, Debra Keever of George West, Diana (Louie) Sellers of Austin, Karen (Robert) Newcomb of Comer, Ga., and Sharon (Craig) Dinsmore of Houston; two brothers, Dale (Lucille) Caruthers of Boerne and Norman (Barbara) Caruthers of San Antonio.
Visitation is on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Galloway & Sons Chapel in George West. Funeral services are on Friday at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in George West with Rev. Bruce Irving officiating. Burial will immediately follow at the George West Cemetery.

Mrs. Maldonado
Fermana “WeeWeeLee” Maldonado, 87, died on Tuesday, May 8, 2007.
She was born on March 2, 1920, in Beeville to Sotero and Faustina Zavala. She was a homemaker and a member of St. James Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Sotero and Faustina Zavala; a grandson, Freddy Arredondo; five sisters; and two brothers.
Survivors are her husband of 64 years, Frank B. Maldonado; eight children, Maria Elena (Ysaias) Guerrero, Manuel (Susie) Maldonado, Senaida (Robert) Hernandez, Alfredo (Gloria) Maldonado, Minerva (Alfredo) Arredondo, Martha (Manuel) Puerto, Juan Maldonado, Susana (Arturo) Martinez; one foster sister, Lupe Treviño; 20 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held on Thursday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Treviño Funeral Home with a rosary at 7:30 p.m. A funeral procession will depart at 1:30 p.m. for Funeral Mass, which will be celebrated at St. James Catholic Church at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at Our Lady of Victory Cemetery #2.
Pallbearers will be her grandsons, Michael Maldonado, Robert Hernandez Jr., Manuel Moreno Jr., Albert Maldonado, Artie Martinez, Christian James Garcia, Alex Maldonado and Richard Guerrero. Honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Perez
Eziquiel Perez, 74, of Normanna died on Tuesday, May 8, 2007.
He was born in Normanna on Jan. 27, 1933, to Epimenia DelBosque and Rafael Perez. He married Eugenia Quintanilla in Beeville on Sept. 27, 1957. He worked for Faulkner Construction and was a Christian.
He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Eliseo Perez and Elias Perez; and two sisters, Rachel Perez and Felicita Perez.
Survivors include his wife, Eugenia Perez of San Antonio; four daughters, Diana Perez and Clarissa Austin, both of San Antonio, Celia Capps and husband Ray of Yucaipa,  Calif., and Patricia Perez of Normanna; four grandchildren, Christina Capps, Meghan Austin, Emily Austin and Daniel Perez; and two sisters, Rebecca Valdez and Epimenia Cantu, both of Normanna.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Angelus Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Del Bosque Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy Fox, Raymond Fox, Sammy Martinez, Raul Scully, Sid Garza, Daniel Perez and Isaias Treviño.

Mr. Vargas
Domingo Guadalupe Vargas, 70, died on Thursday, May 3, 2007, in Poteet.
He was born April 11, 1937, in Karnes County to Herminia and Martin Vargas. He was one of the initial founders of St. Clare’s Catholic Church Men’s Club and was an active contributor to the Southside CYO.
He was preceded in death by his daughters, Yvette Lynn and Margie Vargas; and parents, Herminia and Martin Vargas.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Consuelo Vargas; four daughters, Anna Liza (Daniel) Diaz, Adelaida Vargas, Pearl (Darach) Kilbride, and Connie Vargas; three sons, Domingo (Sylvia) Vargas Jr., Phillip John Vargas, and Ramiro (Jessica) Vargas; 12 grandchildren, Daniel, David, Nicole and Damien Diaz, Jonathan Charles, Jake Kilbride, Eric Vargas, Jaclyn, Ashley and Domingo Vargas III, Thomas Howell and Thomas Howell III; two brothers, Adan (Sofia) Vargas and Pablo (Dora) Vargas; four sisters, Ethel Alvarado, Eva (Tomas) Treviño; Theresa (Tom) Baltazar and Ninfa (Greg) Gomez; and other relatives and friends.
Visitation was held on Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Treviño Funeral Home in San Antonio with a rosary recited at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Clare’s Catholic Church. Interment followed at San Fernando Cemetery #2.
Arrangements were entrusted to Treviño Palo Alto Funeral Home in San Antonio.

Mrs. Bennett
Inez Calame Bennett, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and teacher, passed away on Friday, Oct. 19, 2007, at the age of 98. She was born September 14, 1909, in Wortham,  Texas, to parents Cornelia  Jones Calame and Arthur Jesse Calame.
She graduated from Mexia High School and attended  Texas Woman’s University in Denton for two years, where she pursued a career in education. She continued her studies at Southwest  Texas State in San Marcos, where she received her bachelors degree. She also earned a masters degree from  Texas A&I in Kingsville.
She started teaching school when she was still a teenager. Her first teaching job was in the Pleasant Grove Community of Limestone County, where she was hired by her future husband, Lamon L. Bennett. They were married June 28, 1931, and celebrated 59 years of marriage before his death in 1990. She and Lamon moved their three young children to George West in 1945, where he served as the County Agent and she became the Home Economics teacher at the high school. Her teaching career touched and influenced the lives of countless students. Her teaching career touched and influenced the lives of countless students. It has often been said that everything you needed to know in life could be learned in Mrs. Bennett’s Home Economics Class. She retired in 1972 with 40 years of teaching experience.
She loved her family, home, community, travel, sewing for the grandchildren, and most of all helping people. She will be remembered by her family and former students for her caring, happy spirit.
She is survived by three children, Lamon L. Bennett and wife Elaine Bennett, Hazel Margaret Hill and husband Bill Hill, David C. Bennett and wife Alexis Bennett; 11 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22, at the First Baptist Church in George West,  Texas, with the Rev. Bruce Irving officiating. Interment was in the George West Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Lynn Bennett, Greg Hill, Wayne Bennett, Jason Bennett, Noah Bennett, Dwight Michalk, David Desenberg, Randy Brace, and Gary Seifried. Honorary pallbearer was Tige Brown.
The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the staff of the Live Oak Nursing Center for their loving care.

Mr. Garcia
Antonio Garcia, 54, died on Saturday, Oct. 20, 2007, in Houston.
He was born Feb. 26, 1953, in Beeville to Pedro and Pauline Garcia. He was an active church member at Lamb of God Church in Haltom City, where he worked in the nursery. He was a Dallas Cowboys fan and volunteered to serve food to the less fortunate on Thanksgiving Day. He was a U.S. Army veteran.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Rafael.
Survivors include his wife, Irene; three daughters, Leticia and husband Eddie Ortega, Elizabeth Watson and Patricia and husband Floyd Murillo; six grandchildren; three brothers, Pedro Garcia Jr. of Modesto,  Calif., and Joe H. Garcia and Ruben Garcia, both of Fort Worth; four sisters, Estefanita Juarez and Yolanda Vela, both of Fort Worth, Rosie Mae Gonzales of Beeville and Janie Brooks of Houston; 47 nieces and nephews; and 47 great-nieces and great-nephews.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Laurel Land Funeral Home in Fort Worth. Funeral services will be held there in the chapel at 3 p.m. Friday. Interment will follow at Laurel Land Memorial Park.
Arrangements were entrusted to Laurel Land Funeral Home in Fort Worth.

Mrs. Lemley
Lorene Bertha Emilie Sahm Lemley, 85, of George West died on Thursday, Oct. 18, 2007.
She was born on Aug. 7, 1922, in Karnes County to Ida Hofmann and Alwin Ernst Sahm. She married Thomas Woodrow Lemley on Nov. 8, 1941, in Corpus Christi. She was the owner of Kut-n-Kurl Beauty Shop. She was a member of the BP&W in George West where she was recording secretary, first vice president, treasurer (four times), president and legislation chairman. She was a member of George West United Methodist Church for over 40 years where she served as Sunday school superintendent and was a member of the Pollyanna Class and United Methodist Women.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a younger brother, Oran; and one grandson, John Thomas Boehme.
Survivors include five daughters, Barbara (Lyn) Boehme of San Antonio, Janice (Jim)  Johnson and Connie Cantrell, both of Houston, Jonita (Don) Williams of Victoria, and Donna (Joe) Lyng of Mesquite, Nev.; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one sister, Frances Marsh of Pleasanton; one brother, Clarence Sahm of Geronimo; one half-sister, Henrietta Brundrett of Skidmore; numerous nieces and nephews; and special neighbors, Tommy and Glynis Strause of George West.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the United Methodist Church in George West with Rev. Doug Hinchcliff officiating. Interment will follow at George West Cemetery.
