Young
Jess Alphus Young, 76, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 2003, in Henderson.
Mr. Young was born on Nov. 5, 1927, in Rusk. He was a member of Southside Baptist Church. He was the retired manager of Bruner Department Store in Beeville. He served in the Army during the Korean War.
He was preceded in death by his father, John Henry Young, a sister, Lorene Arnold, and a nephew, David Arnold.
Survivors include his mother, Bonnie Bell Price Young of Henderson; his brothers, Billy, Johnny and Jamie Young, all of Longview, Jerry Young of Garland and Michael Young of Mount Pleasant; his sisters, Mildred McLain of Longview and Elizabeth Rives of San Antonio; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Crawford-Crim-Bryan Funeral Home in Henderson. Pallbearers were Scott, Greg and Jeff Rives, Clint, John, Jackie and Ron Young and Kevin Arnold.
Arrangements were handled through Crawford-Crim-Bryan Funeral Home, Henderson.
Anderson
Alverta Viola Rix Anderson, 89, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005, in San Antonio.
Visitation was held Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m. at Galloway and Sons chapel. Funeral services took place on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Pettus with the Revs. Wes Barnett and John Sisk officiating. Special music was provided by organist Roy Cox and singer Jamie Whitwell. Burial followed in Glenwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Lynn Broadway, John Oman, Bob Cole, Michael Oman, Nathan Cole and Steve Peterson.
Mrs. Anderson was born in Karnes County on Sept. 27, 1915, to Richard and Mary (Miller) Rix. She married George William Anderson on Sept. 8, 1934, in Beeville. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pettus. She worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Pettus for many years as a clerk. She was active in Pettus First Baptist Church and taught Sunday school for more than 50 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, who died June 9, 1985, her parents, three sisters and a brother.
Survivors include her daughters, Sylvia Whitwell and husband M.C. of Cotulla and Judith Borth and husband Leroy of Schertz; a brother, Edward Dale Rix and wife Audrey of Bandera; four granddaughters; and six great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Pettus or the South Texas Children’s Home.

Cunningham
Annie Lillie Cunningham, 85, died Feb. 16, 2005, in the Manor Oaks Nursing Home in Rockdale. A former resident of Corpus Christi, she had lived in Lexington for 27 years.
Funeral services took place Saturday in the First Baptist Church of Lexington at 2 p.m. with the Revs. Michael Luce and Reuel Cooper officiating. Burial followed in the Lexington Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Randy Wrinkle, Aaron and Paul Cunningham, Bill and Ryan Ferguson, Chantz Cutts and Johnny White.
Mrs. Cunningham was born in Normanna on July 24, 1919, to L.L. and Nola (Roberts) Butts. She married Lonnie Woodrow Cunningham on Dec. 9, 1939, in Tuleta. She was a retired personnel manager with J.C. Penney in Corpus Christi, after 20 years of service.
She was preceded in death by her husband, who died on Nov. 11, 1994, her parents, a sister, Lenola Ferguson, and a brother, George Butts.
Survivors include her sons, Woody Ray Cunningham of Houston and Larry Wayne Cunningham and wife Kathy of The Woodlands; her daughter, Lynda Kay Wrinkle and husband Charles of Lexington; a brother, Bob Butts and wife Grace Butts of Beeville; her grandchildren, Randy Wrinkle, Renee Wrinkle Cutts, Aaron and Paul Cunningham; her great-grandchildren, Robby, Meghann and Bradley Wrinkle and Brodie and Brett Cutts.

Garcia
Funeral services are pending at Treviño Funeral Home for Maria Luisa “Lou” Garcia, who died Friday, Feb. 18, 2005, at a hospital in Ogden, Utah.
Kassen
Tex L. Kassen, 90, of Georgetown died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005.
He was the athletic director and head football coach at A.C. Jones High School from 1956 to 1962.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Helen McFadden Kassen; a daughter, Margaret Ann and husband Craig McBurnett; and a granddaughter, Alena.
After Navy service during World War II, Kassen enjoyed 25 years of high school coaching and teaching, including in Beeville. He joined the faculty at Southwestern University and actively supported many community, recreational and educational programs. He shared his dedication to athletics with friends, family and colleagues.
Dr. Kassen was athletic director at Southwestern University from 1971 to 1985. In 1988, he was inducted into the American Red Cross Aquatic Hall of Fame. He was a longtime football and basketball official, working many University of Texas games. In 1994, he was inducted into the Southwest Football Officials Association Hall of Fame.
A longtime member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics District IV Executive Committee, he was commissioner and sports information director for the Big State Conference. In 1989, he was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame. In 1983, the Georgetown Chamber of Commerce honored Kassen for his community service, and his hometown of Georgetown honored him when officials there proclaimed “Tex Kassen Day” in 1987. In 1994, “Tex Kassen Day” was proclaimed in Austin.
In 1995, he was inducted into the Southwestern University Athletic Hall of Fame. And the Greater Austin Sports Foundation inducted him into the Austin Sports Hall of Honor in 1997 for his more than 55 years of volunteer service, supporting youth as a Red Cross aquatics teacher, an official at high school and college football and basketball games, a volunteer with Texas Special Olympics and official at UT’s Texas Relays and UIL state track meets.
According to longtime local sports announcer Jimmy Goodman, Kassen was the oldest football official in the U.S. in his later years, and he once had officiated a basketball game when Wilt Chamberlain was in college.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Tex Kassen scholarship fund at Southwestern University (512-863-1235) or to the American Red Cross (Cen-Tx Chapter).
Visitation was held Tuesday night at The Gabriels Funeral Chapel. Funeral service were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Georgetown. Burial followed at I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

Langley
Erlene Langley died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2005.
She was born on Feb. 25, 1940, to Annie Laura Davis and Homer Lee Tolliver in Beeville. She lived all her life in Beeville and attended Lott-Canada School. She married Paul B. Langley in 1963. Erlene and Paul were foster parents to many children in Texas.
Mrs. Langley was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Langley, her mother, Annie Tolliver, her father, Homer Tolliver, two brothers, Homer Tolliver Jr. and Anthony Tolliver, and two sisters; Nicki Lott and Nancy Tolliver.
Survivors include a daughter, Diane (Vernell) Cromwell of Mobile, Ala.; three sons, Paul Langley Jr. and Rodney (Gracie) Langley of Beeville and Michael (Twyla) Langley of Corpus Christi; one brother, John Tolliver of Beeville; two sisters, Coral Tolliver of Beeville and Marilyn Rivera of Beaumont; two aunts, Clara Lewis and Quency Davis, both of Beeville; four granddaughters, La Wanda Langley and La Toya Black of Mobile, Ala., Ashton Robinson and Camyron Langley of Beeville; three grandsons, Derrick Robinson and Issack Arrizola of Beeville and Jared Langley of Corpus Christi; two great-grandchildren, Ayanna Martinez and Autumn Black of Mobile, Ala.; and a host of relatives and friends.
Visitation was held on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 1 p.m. at Treviño Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Eric Rendell Tarver officiating. Burial will follow at St. Rose Cemetery.
Puente
Bressea C. Puente, 23, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005, as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
She was born in Beeville on April 14, 1981, to Rolando Esperiqueta of San Antonio and Celia Puente Lusk of Beeville. Miss Puente was a bookkeeper and was employed with Blant Miller CPA. She graduated from A.C. Jones High School in 1999.
Miss Puente was preceded in death by her grandparents, Otilio and Maria Puente.
Survivors include her parents; her son, Brendon Benavidez of Beeville; her stepfather, Michael Lusk of Beeville; her stepmother, Mary Esperiqueta of San Antonio; her paternal grandparents, Valentin and Anita Esperiqueta of Beeville; her step-grandparents, Jerry and Lupe Lusk of Round Rock; her brothers, Christopher Gomez, Jerrick and Aaron Lusk, all of Beeville, and Zachry and Aliz Esperiqueta of San Antonio.
Rosary was recited Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Trevino Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be celebrated today (Wednesday) at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church with Rev. Henry Heese officiating. Burial will follow at Our Lady of Victory Cemetery No. 2. Pallbearers will be Shaun Mick, Jose Luis Elizondo Jr., Adrien Elizondo, Edward Puente, Benancio Puente Jr., Michael Puente, Benny and Cirildo Puente Jr.
Silvas
Victor R. Silvas, 50, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005.
Visitation was held Tuesday from 4 to 9 p.m. at Angelus Funeral Home, with a rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday) at 10 a.m. at the same location with Father Balaswamy Pasala officiating. Special music will be provided by Fernando Cisneros. Mr. Silvas will be cremated.
Mr. Silvas was born in Beeville on Nov. 7, 1954, to David F. and Guadalupe (Rodriguez) Silvas. He served in the U.S. Army. He enjoyed growing and selling cactus, gardening and playing dominos.
He was preceded in death by his father, David F. Silvas Sr.

Sugarek
Margaret Matejek Sugarek, 79, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005, at Regency Manor Nursing Center in Floresville.
She was born in Yorktown on June 12, 1925, to Frank I. and Pauline (Kolodzey) Matejek. She was a homemaker and a teacher and a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.
Mrs. Sugarek was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Melvin F. Sugarek and a sister, Isabel M. Sugarek.
Survivors include her sisters, Adele M. Smith of Syracuse, N.Y., and Ruth M. Poth of Poth, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Rosary will be recited tonight (Wednesday) at 7:30 at Vinyard Funeral Home chapel in Poth. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday at 2 p.m. at St. Joseph’s with Father Patrick Donohoe officiating. Burial will follow in Beeville Memorial Park.

Villarreal
Beatrice D. Villarreal, 81, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2005.
She was born on April 1, 1923, in Yorktown to Emeterio De Leon and Adelita Castaneda. She married Reynaldo R. Villarreal in Beeville on May 5, 1946. Mrs. Villarreal was retired from the Beeville Independent School District, where she served as a cafeteria worker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Reynaldo R. Villarreal; her parents; six sisters, Virginia D. Weir, Paulita De Leon, Ruth De Leon, Manuela D. Zamora, Vicenta D. Contreras and Lupita De Leon; and five brothers, Hilberto, Faustino, Telesforo, Antonio and Felipe De Leon.
Survivors include a daughter, Rosalinda (Richard) Espinosa of Beeville; and her grandsons, Richard Ray, Kenneth Rene, Reynaldo Erik and Andrey Ricardo Espinosa.
