JANN WILSON

Funeral services were held for Jann Wilson, 44, of Plainview at 2:00 p.m. November 11, 2002 in the Lemons Memorial Chapel, Plainview. The Rev. Don Robertson of College Heights Baptist Church officiated.

Burial was in Plainview Cemetery under the direction of Lemon Funeral Home of Plainview.

Mrs. Wilson was born April 14, 1958 in Plainview. She was married to Dwight Wilson on October 31, 1998.

She died Saturday, November 9, 2002 at her residence.

She graduated from Plainview High School and South Plains College School of Nursing. She moved to Lockney in 1996.

Survivors include her husband Dwight; one stepdaughter, Brandie Amador of Kress; two sons, Michael Wardlow and Chase Wilson of Plainview; two nieces, Cerissa and Kailey Wardlow, also of Plainview and three grandchildren.

Family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society or any Hospice Organization.

J. HOWARD COOPER

Services for J. Howard ("J.H.") Cooper, 91, long-time resident of Ruidoso were held on Monday, January 20, at the First Baptist Church in Ruidoso. The Rev. Wayne Joyce officiated, and Rev. Tim Gilliland assisted. Burial was at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Ruidoso.

Mr. Cooper was born the first of thirteen children on August 6, 1911, to James Elbert and Maude Frances  White Cooper at Rayburn, Arkansas. He moved with his family to Quitaque in 1926. He married Mary Louise Marr on August 15, 1933 at Quitaque.

The couple left Quitaque in 1937 and lived off and on in Ruidoso for the next 68 years. He and Mary Louise were charter members of the First Baptist Church of Ruidoso. He first worked in logging, then worked briefly as a carpenter in constructing Fort Bliss. In 1941, they moved to Roswell where Mr. Cooper worked as a carpenter in building Walker Air Base.

They moved to Lockney in 1943, where he worked as a carpenter, FHA building inspector, and insurance agent as a partner with Louise in the insurance agency they set up.

In 1960, he and Mary Louise returned to Roswell, then returned to Ruidoso in 1963 and opened the J.H. Cooper Insurance Agency in Gateway. He retired in 1974 due to poor health. After his health improved, he worked in several capacities until he fully retired in the late 1980's.

Mr. Cooper had no formal education past tenth grade; however, he was an avid reader and learned mathematics, surveying, carpentry, and insurance regulations on his own and through experience.

Preceding Mr. Cooper in death were his wife of almost 69 years on May 27, 2002; his parents; two sisters; and four brothers.

Survivors include his daughter, Carol Schultheis, of Austin; two grandsons, Michael and Jeremy Schultheis of Austin; a great-granddaughter, Daisy Schultheis of Austin; three sisters, Relda Anne Lumpkin of Amarillo; Vera Wood of Ruidoso; Wilma Van Meter of Hobbs, New Mexico; three brothers, Ross Cooper of Lockney; Lee Cooper of Georgetown, and Pete Cooper of Jal, New Mexico; and numerous nieces and nephews, many of whom thought of Howard and Mary Louise as grandparents.

Pallbearers were Michael and Jeremy Schultheis, Lee Cooper, Bob Van Meter, Jim Wood, Pete Cooper, and Kevin Smith.

Arrangements were under the direction of LaGrone Funeral Chapel of Ruidoso.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Elaine Hardy Scholarship Fund, % Glenda Ford, P.O. Box 823, Lockney,  Texas, 79241.

CAPTOLA GRAVES

Graveside services for Captola Graves, 84, of Canyon were held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 29, 2003. reverend Anthony Sisemore, pastor of First Baptist church of Floydada, officiated. Burial was n the Floydada Cemetery under the direction of Brooks Funeral Directors of Canyon.

Mrs. Graves died January 27, 2003, at Canyon.

She was born on October 2, 1918 in Hall County,  Texas to Judge Allen and Lelia Lytle Baskin. She married Oscar Richard "Dick" Graves in Floydada on March 12, 1936. He preceded her in death on January 16, 1954.

She moved to Canyon in 1987. She was employed by Puralator Courier in Amarillo before her retirement. She was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Canyon and the Mary Sunday School Class.

Survivors include a daughter, Gerry  Taylor and husband, Bill of Hereford; a son, Richard Graves and wife, Georgie of Canyon; three grandchildren, Mike Hill, Brooke  Taylor and Scott Graves.

JOSE LUIS MARTINEZ

Graveside services for Jose Luis Martinez, infant son of David Martinez and Oralia Gonzalez Martinez, of Floydada were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 25, 2002 in the Floydada Cemetery. Reverend Philip DeFreitas officiated.

Burial was under the direction of Moore-Rose- White Funeral Home of Floydada.

He was still-born on January 22, 2003 at University Medical Center in Lubbock.

He was preceded in death by paternal grandfather, Ismael Martinez and a maternal grandfather, Luis Gonzalez.

Survivors include his parents; a paternal grandmother, Lila Martinez of Floydada; a maternal grandmother, Amelia Torrez of Mexico; a brother, Arnoldo Martinez of Floydada; numerous aunts and uncles, Elva Martinez and Tony and Shelly Martinez and family, all of Dougherty; Elda and Arnoldo Gonzalez and family, Robert Martinez and family and Johnny Joe Martinez, all of Floydada; Julio and Graciela Gonzalez and family and Emiliano Gonzales, all of Mexico; and Yolanda Gonzalez and family, all of Juarez, Mexico.

JOHNNY R. HUCKS

Memorial services for Johnny R. Hucks, 70, of Lockney were held at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 4, 2003 at the First Baptist Church of Lockney.

Cremation was under the direction of Moore-Rose- White Funeral Home of Lockney.

Mr. Hucks died Friday, January 31, 2003 at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock.

He was born on January 20, 1933 in Macon, Georgia to the late Joseph Hucks and Debbie Giles Hucks. He married Loretta Cooper on January 20, 1954 in Littlefield.

He moved to Lockney from Dimmitt 9 years ago. He was a veteran of the United States Army and was a P.O.W. of the Korean War. He was a x-ray/lab technician at W.J. Mangold Memorial Hospital and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Wellington.

He was preceded in death by one son, Richard Raymond Hucks and two brothers, James Hucks and Howard Hucks.

Survivors include his wife, Loretta Hucks of Lockney; two sons, and their wives, Kevin and Jan Hucks and Tim and Debra Hucks, all of Pampa; three brothers, W. B. Hucks of Springlake, David Hucks of Lubbock and Donald Hucks of Arlington; two sisters, Rosie Gwin of Edinburg and Ruby Bolinger of Bentonville, Arkansas; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

RICHARD MOREHEAD

Graveside services for Richard Manning Morehead, 89, of Austin were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, February 3, 2003 at the  Texas State Cemetery.

Memorial services followed at 3:00 p.m. Monday, February 3, 2003 at the Westminster Manor Chapel. Reverend San Williams and Reverend Keith Wright officiated.

Arrangements were under the direction of Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home of Austin.

Morehead was born November 16, 1913 in Plainview to the late Edward John (EJ) and Ethel Daily Morehead.

He attended Plainview public schools, the University of Missouri, Wayland College and the University of  Texas - Austin, receiving a Bachelor of Journalism degree from UT in 1935.

He joined the Austin bureau of the Dallas Morning News as a correspondent in 1942 and retired in 1979 as bureau chief.

He wrote for several publications including the Saturday Review,  Texas Parade,  Texas Bar Journal,  Texas Railroad Commission magazine, Business Week and the Wall Street Journal.

He was the  Texas correspondent for the Southern Education Reporting Service ( a Ford Foundation information project on school desegregation) 1954-1968 and was legislative correspondent for the Southern Regional Education Board in 1981 and earlier sessions.

His professional awards include: the Headliners Foundation Award for Lifetime Achievement in Journalism; the Southwest Journalism Forum (S.M.U.) for political writing; and the State Bar of  Texas (three times) for the journalist who has done the most to improve justice in the state.

In 1972 he co-authored with wife, Judith, "The  Texas Wild Game Cookbook", "Fifty Years in  Texas Politics", "Dewitt C. Greer, King of the Highway Builders", and organized family stories and recollections into "The Morehead Family -Twentieth Century Texans". Additionally, he was contributor or co-author of other booksincluding one on J. Evetts Haley; "Southern Schools - Progress and Problems"; "With All Deliberate Speed"; and "States in Crisis".

He was a member of the  Texas Judicial Council for thirty-one years--the longest tenure in history - where he served terms as Vice President and Secretary.

He was a member and past president of Austin Professional chapter, Sigma Delta Chi, member and former director of the Association of Petroleum Writers and charter member, trustee, and life member of the Austin Headliners Club.

He was also a longtime member of the University Presbyterian Church in Austin where he served as deacon and elder. He was a member of both the Hale County Historical Commission and the Panhandle Plains Historical Society; and the Austin Town and Gown Club. In 1959 he received an honorary LLD from Wayland Baptist Church.

The Judith English Morehead and Richard M. Morehead Endowed Scholarship was established in 2001 at Wayland Baptist University in their honor.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Marjorie Sue Overly; a brother-in-law, Johnny Hotchkiss; a sister-in-law, Audrey Farris Morehead; and a granddaughter, Laura Chapin.

Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Judith English Morehead; a daughter, Judith Morehead Chapin and husband, Gordon of Lampasas; one son, Richard M. Morehead, Jr. MD of Santa Fe, New Mexico; one grandson, Curtis M. Chapin and wife, Arlene of Fort Worth; two great-grandsons, Collin Richard Chapin and Jordan Isaac Chapin of Fort Worth; a brother, Lucian Morehead of Austin; a sister, Dorothy Hotchkiss of Canyon; a brother-in-law, Robert Overly of Houston and numerous nieces, nephews and their families.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Headliners Club Foundation Scholarship Fund or a charity of your choice.

TOMMIE EUGENE RICE

Funeral services for Tommie Eugene Rice, 64, of Crosbyton were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 4, 2003 at the Crosbyton First United Methodist Church. Reverend Bruce Cotton officiated.

Burial was in the Crosbyton Cemetery under the direction of Adams Funeral Home of Crosbyton.

Rice died Saturday, February 1, 2003 at Lubbock Covenant Medical Center.

He was born September 10, 1938 in Electra. He attended elementary school in Plainview and was a 1956 graduate of Hale Center High School. He joined the Navy in April of 1956 and served until August of 1959 as a Boiler Technician.

He married Pat Cagle Edwards on April 24, 1992 in Floydada.

Rice started his career with the Postal Service in 1965 as a clerk in Turkey  Texas Post Office. In 1970 he was a city carrier in Plainview and then served as Plainview's Supeprintendent of Postal Operations unitl 1988.

He served as Postmaster in Floydada from 1988 until 1997. He was a member of the National Association of Postmasters and attended numerous Postal Academies as well as Wayland Baptist University. He moved to Crosbyton in 1999 from Floydada.

He was a member of the Crosbyton First United Methodist Church. He was also a Mason and served as Past Master of Arch. J. Keys Masonic Lodge in Plainview.

He is preceded in death by two sisters, Johnny Faye Rice and Rita Jean Rice.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Kirk Rice and wife, Kathie of Pampa; two daughters, Jeanean Wood and husband, David of Plainview and Jennifer Justice of Plainview; a stepson, Neal Edwards and wife, Julie of Turkey; a stepdaughter, Tammi Stafford and husband, Wesley of Sweetwater; seven grandchildren, Amber and Haley Wood, Karami Rice, Caleb Justice, Connor and Collin Stafford and Caden Edwards.

Family suggests memorials to Hospice of Lubbock, 1102 Slide Road, Lubbock,  Texas 79416, Crosbyton First United Methodist Church, Box 476, Crosbyton,  Texas 79322 or Joe Arrington Cancer Center, 4101 22nd Place, Lubbock,  Texas 79410.

LONA SPARKS

Private graveside services were held for Lona Sparks,98, of Lubbock, February 1, 2003, in Floydada Cemetery. Moore-Rose- White Funeral Home officiated.

Mrs. Sparks died January 28, in Lubbock.

She was born January 23, 1905 in Limestone County to Charles Wesley and Lee Rogers Moody. She was a life long Baptist and a member of the Rebecca Lodge where she had served as president and past Noble Grand. She moved to Lubbock in 1980.

She married Alva Lee Sparks in Waco on December 31, 1922. They moved to Floydada from Lueders,  Texas in 1932. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1969; and a son, Harold, in 1986.

She is survived by two sisters: Doris Irvin and Louise Ridlehuber of Waco; a son, Don of Mesa, Arizona; two daughters, Kay Steen and Linda Sparks of Lubbock; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

RALPH TUBBS

Graveside services for Ralph Samuel Tubbs, 89, of Pomona, California were held today, March 27, 2003 in Floydada Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Moore-Rose- White Funeral Home of Floydada.

Mr. Tubbs died Tuesday, March 18, 2003 in Pomona, California.

He was born on October 9, 1913 in Floydada to the late Arthur Alvin Tubbs and Lucille Marie Goslee Tubbs.

He was the nephew of former county Judge Clifford Tubbs. He married Esther C. Tyler in 1933 in Floydada. He left Floydada in 1935 and retired from the LAPD in 1965.

His wife preceded him in death on 9-24-1984.

Survivors include three sons and their wives, James P. and Thelma Tubbs of Hanford, California, Billie R. and Darlene Tubbs of Camarillo, California, and Larry A. and Domi Tubbs of Eureka, California; one brother, Kenneth Tubbs of Mercer Island,  Washington; three sisters, Margaret Fisher, Clara Brown and Catherine Walrath all of Placerville, California; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
