POUND, Va. -- Dora Lane Baker, 89, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Wise County before moving to Bristol, Virginia in 1996.
She was a member of Indian Creek Freewill Baptist Church and was the widow of Earlin Baker.
Survivors include one son, Jack Baker, Bristol, Virginia; two sisters, Edith Anderson, Canton, Ohio and Pauline Bevins, Mineral, Va.; one brother, Troy Lane, Bristol, Tennessee; three grandchildren, Gary Ray Baker and Diana Freeman, both of Wise, and Greg Baker, Bristol, Virginia; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

Alma T. Barnette
ABINGDON -- Mrs. Alma Taylor Barnette, 84, of 18180 Olson Drive, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, in a Chilhowie health care center.
She was a native of Belfast, Va., had lived in the Belfast area most of her life, and had lived in Abingdon for the past 21 years.
She was a 1930 graduate of Lebanon High School, a member of First Christian Church, Abingdon, and a former member of Honaker Eastern Star Counts Chapter 127.
She was a former Russell County Supervisor from 1960 to 1968, and was instrumental in establishing Southwest Virginia Community College.
She was the widow of Kermit Barnette.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, James R. "Dick" and Judy Barnette, Abingdon; and some special friends, the Pope family, Abingdon.

Kenneth E. Campbell
Kenneth E. Campbell, 55, of Bristol, Tennessee, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was a native of Shady Valley, Tenn., and had lived in Bristol most of his life.
He was a member of Community Independent Freewill Baptist Church and a retired employee of Spring United Telephone.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Campbell; one stepson, Mike Kaylor, Bluff City; his parents, Rose and James "Hack" Campbell, Bristol, Tennessee; two brothers, Harold Campbell and Milton Campbell, both of Bristol, Tennessee; two step-grandchildren; one nephew; one great-niece; and one aunt.

LEBANON -- Barbara Lee Cooke, 64, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, in Russell County Medical Center.
She was a resident of Maple Grove Nursing Home and a former resident of St. Paul.
Survivors include three daughters, Sharon Whitaker, Richmond, Janet Keen, Bristol, Tennessee, and Jenessa Lawandus, Greenville, S.C.; two sons, James R. Mays, St. Paul, and Danny Mays, Bristol, Virginia; four sisters, Blanche Vance and Shirley Sproles, both of Abingdon, Viola Ferguson, Kingsport, and Nina White, Jonesborough; two brothers, Bruce Cooke, Blountville, and Eugene Cooke, Abingdon; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Robert C. Hand
TROUTDALE, Va. -- Robert C. "Bob" Hand, 62, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, in Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center, Kingsport.
He was a native of Washington County, Va. and was a former resident of Damascus.
He was a former employee of Columbus McKinnon Corporation and was a U.S. Army Reserve veteran.
He was a member of Troutdale Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lois W. Hand; two daughters, Mrs. Tommy (Rebecca) O'Quinn, Meadowview, and Mrs. Marty (Kathy) Ratliff, Damascus; one son, Robert Charles Hand, of the home; three sisters, Delcie Eastridge, Damascus, Leona Stanley, Glade Spring, and Mary Potter, Abingdon; two brothers, James Hand, Damascus, and Ralph Hand, Abingdon; one granddaughter; three grandsons; and several nieces and nephews.

John C. Henderson
DECATUR, Ill. -- Mr. John C. Henderson, 74, died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 1997, in Deaton Memorial Hospital, Decatur.
He was a native of Kimball, W.Va., and had lived most of his life in Abingdon.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran serving in World War II and the Korean War in many campaigns in both the Atlantic and Pacific.
While in the service, he earned the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal with Bronze Star, the United Nations Service Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon and the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Moose, the Elks, the Eagles and the American Legion.
He was a retired employee of PPG Industries with 43 years of service.
Survivors include his wife, Ollie Henderson; one son, John C. Henderson Jr., Tallahassee, Fla.; four daughters, Donna Raydo, Kansas City, Jacqui Johnson, Topeka, Kan., Lyn Durbin, Danville, Ohio, and Jill Byers, Warren, Ohio; two sisters, Edgar Wallace, Greensboro, N.C., and Pauline Waldron, Berwin, W.Va.; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Francis Hopson
HAYSI -- Francis Hopson, 85, of Route 1, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, in St. Mary's Hospital, Norton.
She was a native of Dickenson County, the widow of Charlie Hopson and was a member of Pound River Church of the Brethren.
Survivors include one daughter, Alice Bernice Cummings, Ypsilanti, Mich.; four sons, C.J. Hopson, Royal Oak, Mich., Arvil D. Hopson, Hazel Park, Mich., Perry P. Hopson and Caudle Hopson, both of Haysi; two sisters, Lucinda Mullins, Warren, Mich., and Dulcine Outland, Murray, Ky.; 14 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

NORTON -- Ruth Provence Jackson, 87, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998, in Norton Community Hospital.
She was a former resident of East Park Avenue section before moving to Gate City in 1994.
She was a member of Park Avenue Baptist Church, Norton.
Survivors include her husband, John Jackson, Gate City; one son, Don Jackson, Gate City; one sister, Gertrude Adams, Tybee Island, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

Grace R. Jones
Grace R. Jones, 77, of Bristol, Tennessee, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1998, in
Johnson City Medical Center.
She was a native and lifelong resident of Bristol.
She was a member of Edgemont Presbyterian Church and the Volunteer Chapter of DAR.
She received her bachelor's degree from the University of Tennessee and taught for 30 years in the Sullivan County School System.
Survivors include her husband, James C. "Jim" Jones; two daughters, Penny Beckerman, Asheville, N.C., and Peggy Shipley, Bristol, Tennessee; one son-in-law; three grandchildren; and several nieces.
