GATE CITY -- Ardith C. Bowyer, 81, of Route 1, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 1998, in Hillside Manor Rehabilitation Center, Kingsport.
She was a native of Cirtsville, W.Va., and was retired from Misty Harbor Coat Factory, Baltimore, as a seamstress.
She was of the Baptist faith and was a member of Victory Freewill Baptist Church.
She was the widow of Oscar D. Bowyer.
Survivors include six daughters, Mrs. Marcella Sullivan, Purcellville, Va., Mrs. Lorena Benarick, Baltimore, Mrs. Freda Miles, Gate City, Mrs. Ada Potter, Edgewater, Md., and Mrs. Lena McNeely, Pax, W.Va., Mrs. Wanda Mierzwa, Bayshore, N.Y.; three sons, Eddie L. Bowyer, Medina, Ohio, Edgar D. Bowyer, Flintstone, Md., Danny R. Bowyer, Baltimore; 21 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Floyd Byrd
TELFORD -- Floyd Byrd, 92, of 371 Telford-New Victory Road, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998, in Columbia Northside Hospital.
He was a native of Yancey County, N.C., and was retired from Clinchfield Railroad.
He attended Telford United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Bessie Anderson Byrd; five daughters, Jewell
Jones and Anna Lou Chase, both of Jonesborough, Ruby Huffine,
Johnson City, Freida Hunt, Seymour, Tenn., and Gaynelle Wilhoit, Piney Flats; two sons, Garnie Byrd and Bill Byrd, both of
Johnson City; 11 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

BIG STONE GAP -- Naida Catlin, 90, died Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, in Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital, Big Stone Gap.
She was a housewife.
Survivors include one daughter, Caryll Williams, Big Stone Gap; three grandchildren, Jeffrey T. Williams, Charlotte Court House, Va., Matthew S. Williams, Lawrenceville, Va., and Stephen A. Williams, Big Stone Gap; and one great-grandchild.

Walter H. Crabtree
CARETTA, W.Va. -- Walter Hash Crabtree, 86, died Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, in Bluefield Regional Medical Center.
He was a native of Cleveland, Va., a coal miner, and spent most of his working life employed by the Olga Coal Company in Caretta.
After retirement in 1966, he worked for a number of years for the McDowell County Board of Education at Coalwood Elementary.
He had lived in Caretta since 1948.
Survivors include his wife, Faye Presley Crabtree; two daughters, Dr. Janice Crabtree Wilson, Xenia, Ohio and Nina Crabtree Cornett, Anchorage, Alaska; three sons, Roger, Alexandria, Va., Dean, Birmingham, Mich. and Ronald, Woodbridge, Va.; three grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; brothers-in-law, and a sister-in-law.

Clyde Dean Sr.
GATE CITY -- Clyde "Smokey" Dean Sr., 71, of Route 1, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998 in Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation, Weber City.
He was a lifelong resident of Scott County and a U.S. Army veteran having served during World War II.
He was retired from Holston Defense and was a member of Copper Creek Ruritan Club and a volunteer for Christian Social Ministry. He was also of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include his wife, Polly Belle Culbertson Dean; one daughter, Mrs. Hal David (Barbara) Salley, Kingsport; two sons, Clyde Dean Jr., Gate City, and Billy Joe Dean, Nickelsville, Va.; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; his mother, Maggie Clark Dean, Dayton, Ohio; one sister, Betty Garrett, Dayton; two brothers, Robert Dean, Nickelsville, and Jay Dean, Dayton; and several nieces and nephews.

He was a lifelong farmer in the Rich Valley area, and a member of Riverside United Methodist Church.

ABINGDON -- Herbert H. Fletcher, 69, died Monday, Jan. 26, 1998, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
He was a native of Buchanan County and had lived in Prince William County most of his life before moving to Abingdon five years ago.
He attended Solid Rock Baptist Church.
He was a machinist for Georator Corporation, Manassas, Va., for 38 years, and was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his wife, Della J. Fletcher; one son, Gary L. Fletcher, Abingdon; one daughter, Lisa A. Young, Manassas; two brothers, Earl Fletcher, Abingdon, and Bernard Fletcher, Lebanon; two sisters, Marie Fletcher, Manassas, and Adilene Belcher, Lebanon; one granddaughter; one step-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

CASTLEWOOD -- Vencil Hawkins, 87, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 1998, in Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center, Kingsport.
He was a native of Russell County and a farmer.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Keith Hawkins; one daughter, Jean Peters, Surgoinsville; four sons, the Rev. Harold Hawkins and Ulas Hawkins, both of Kingsport, Bobby Hawkins, St. Paul, and Billy Hawkins, Castlewood; one brother, Grover Hawkins, Castlewood; seven grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Ina Ree Hickman
BLOUNTVILLE -- Ina Ree Hickman, 90, of Muddy Creek Road, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 1998 in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
She was retired from the Kingsport Press with 47 years service. She was a member of the Eastern Star Chapter 419 of Blountville. She was also a life member and had served as treasurer of Hulls Chapel United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one sister, Allie Jones, Blountville; one nephew, Bill Hickman, Blountville; one niece, Mrs. Lynn (Barbara) Hickman, Knoxville; and three great-nieces.
