MASSEY
Helen Ellke Massey, 86, of Richmond, passed away Sunday, December 16, 2001. She is with her sister, Delores E. Tallman, who also passed away on Sunday. She was preceded in death by her husband, Garnett Elwood Massey. She is survived by her daughters, Anita Kelly and her husband Forrest Leon Kelly and Garnett Carol Sloope; a sister, Emma E. Sproles; grandchildren, Kimberly K. Fernandez of Clarksville, Tenn., Garnett Blackwell, Kendall Sloope and Michael Sloope; and six great-grandchildren. Mrs. Massey was a retired hairstylist with Thalhimer's Dept. Store. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull St. Rd., where the family will receive friends Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m.. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment Forest Lawn Cemetery.

MAYTON
Charles Clifton Mayton, 74, of Richmond and formerly of Kenbridge, entered into eternal rest December 1, 2001 to join his wife of 43 years, Frances Hall Mayton. He was born in Lunenburg County November 3, 1927 to Thomas Lee Mayton and Mary Lou Slaughter Mayton. He is survived by five daughters, Carolyn Stevens of Charles City, Dianne Mills of Powhatan, Larraine Tate of Aylett, Joan Pollock of Mechanicsville, and Lisa Mayton of Richmond; one son, Charles Kenneth Mayton of Mechanicsville; nine grandchildren, Christine VanDeventer, Bethany Reed, Brian Stevens, Joseph Bullock, Angela, Christopher, and Austin Mayton, David and Ashley Pollock; ten great-grandchildren, Sarah and Jesse Reed, Michael, Matthew, Mellissa, Megan, Cameron and Haley VanDeventer, Brianna Stone, and Gavin Stevens; one brother, Frank L. Mayton; two sisters, Margaret Daniels and Louise Smith. He was also brother of the late Thomas S. Mayton, Minnie Pearl Daniels, and Jenny Lee Daniels. The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Clarke Funeral Home, Kenbridge, where funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, December 18, 2 p.m. Interment in Kenbridge Heights Cemetery. MITCHELL
Merlyn Hall Mitchell, age 86, of Drakes Branch, died Saturday, December 15, 2001. She was the widow of H.B. Mitchell Sr. Mrs. Mitchell was a lifelong member of the Lebanon United Methodist Church. Surviving are one son and daughter-in-law, Bert and Kathleen Mitchell of Charlotte Court House; one granddaughter and husband, Susan M. and Averett Jones of Keysville; twin grandsons, Brett R. Mitchell of Huntersville, N.C., Bart and wife, Kim Mitchell of Mechanicsville, Va.; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, S. Harris Hall and Robert L. Hall Sr. of Drakes Branch; two sisters, Hattie "Tommie" Ragland and Vista Greer of Richmond. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 18, 2001 in the Lebanon Methodist Church, with interment in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Browning Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, December 17. In lieu of flowers, please consider the Lebanon Methodist Church Building Fund.

OWEN
Leslie H. Owen Sr., 91, of New Kent and formerly of Richmond, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 15, 2001. He was the widower of Bertie M. Owen and is survived by his son, Leslie H. Owen Jr.; and sister, Mary O. Parker. Mr. Owen was the owner and operator of Owen Brothers Amoco. He was a member of Woodland Heights Masonic Lodge #345 AF&AM, and a long time member of Weatherford Baptist Church. Mr. Owen served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, December 17, at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rt. 10), with a Masonic service being conducted at 7 p.m. His funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment will be at Maury Cemetery.

PEMBERTON
William Isiah Pemberton of 3232 Cliff Ave. entered eternal rest December 14, 2001. He was retired from Philip Morris, USA. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Lee Pemberton; and two sons. Surviving are three daughters, Althea Jones, Sheila Banks and Rosa Marie Pemberton; two sons, Samuel and Tyrone Pemberton; seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, five sisters, two brothers; three daughters-in-law, Clarissa A., Bonnie T., and Gloria Pemberton; a host of other relatives and friends. PEYTON
Armistead Peyton, son of Emily Armistead and Robert Eden Peyton Jr., died December 14, 2001. He was born in Richmond, Va. on April 3, 1916. He attended the McGuire's University School, graduated from St. Christopher's School, the University of Virginia and the Evening School of Business Administration at the University of Richmond. He served as a 1st Lieutenant in the Infantry, in the Normandy Invasion landing on Omaha Beach. In 1945, he became an independent agent with the Traveler's Insurance Co. Later on, he was co-founder of the Peyton, Cheely, Woodle Insurance Agency, a multi-insurance company. He was a member of the National Society of the Richmond Chapter of Chartered Life Underwriters. For many years, he was Scoutmaster of Troop 18, sponsored by St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and Troop 21, sponsored by St. James's Episcopal Church. He was a member of St. James's Church, where he served on the vestry, a member of the Decendents of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence, the Sons of the Revolution in the state of Virginia, The Cohoke Club and the Country Club of Virginia. Mr. Peyton was an avid fisherman and hunter throughout his life, and an advocate of conservation of Virginia's fields, streams, forests and wildlife. He is survived by his wife, Almeyda Spratley Peyton; a daughter, Gay Peyton; a daughter, Eliza Peyton Leitch and her husband, John Taylor Leitch; a son, Armistead Peyton Jr. of Seattle, Wash.; two granddaughters, Corbin and Anne Peyton Leitch; and a sister, Mrs. William H. Higgins Jr. A funeral service will be held at St. James's Episcopal Church at 11 a.m. Tuesday, December 18. Private burial will be at Hollywood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to St. James's Episcopal Church or St. Christopher's School.

PIERCE
Nina Crowder Pierce, 61, of Plainview, Va., died Sunday, December 16, 2001. She retired from Virginia Historical Society after 19 years of service. Her brother, Raymond Earl Crowder, Jr. preceded her in death. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by her husband, Robert E. Pierce, Sr. of 40 years; two daughters, Sharon Pierce Swanson of Plainview; Donna Lynn Pierce-Lucca and her husband, Steven of Toano; a son and his wife, Robert E. Pierce, Jr. and Lisa of Plainview; five sisters, Stella Cade of Gray, Tenn., Pat Minarik, Carolyn Shelton and Neila Crowder of Gloucester; Ruth Adams of Providence Forge; four grandchildren, Stephanie Lawson, Erin Swanson, Kathyrn and Alexandra Lucca; and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, 2 p.m. at Vincent Funeral Home, West Point, Va., with burial in Shacklefords Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to West Point Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad Department Inc., Box X, West Point, Va. 23181.

PURCELL
Harvey W. Purcell Sr. of Elko, passed away on December 15, 2001. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Joan; his son, Harvey Jr.; daughter, Tara England and her husband, Jeff; ever by his side, his beloved grandson, Matthew Adam England; and his dog, Tag. He is also survived by his brother and two sisters. He was retired from C&O Railroad after 32 years of service (Fulton Yards). He enjoyed his gardening and playing bingo. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., and where services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday. Interment Washington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bon Secours Hospice, 8580 Magellan Pkwy.

SCHERER
David Scherer of Midlothian died December 15, 2001 in Richmond. He was born August 1, 1932 in Bronx, N.Y., the son of the late William and Shirley Weinstein Scherer. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army 1953-54. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Scherer; his daughter, Brenda Gianchetti of Old Bridge, N.J.; four sons, Jonathan Scherer of New York, N.Y., William Dodge of Williston Park, N.Y., Robert Dodge of Midlothian, Glenn Dodge of Greenlawn, N.Y.; his sister, Francine Resnick of Forest Hills, N.Y.; and seven grandchildren. Graveside service Monday, December 17, at King Solomon Cemetery, Clifton, N.J.

SCOTT
Glen Doyle Scott, age 67, of 1305 Wilson Rd., died Saturday, December 15, 2001. Mr. Scott, a native of Isle of Wight, retired as an Electrical Inspector from Newport News Shipbuilding in 1997 with 25 years of service. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Smithfield, and an avid fisherman and collector of Native American artifacts since childhood. Glen served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1956. Mr. Scott was preceded in death by his parents, Edwin Bedine and Mae Nelson Scott and his brothers, Leigh Brock Scott and Edward Scott. Survivors include his wife, Bessie Berryman Scott; daughter, Shari Lynn Scott; son, Glen Doyle Scott Jr., both of Newport News, Va.; sister, Barbara Scott Chapman, Pensacola, Fla.; brother, Ralph Scott, Blackwood, N.J.; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, December 19, 2001 at 7 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church, Smithfield, with Rev. Harry Spear officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall and at other times at the residence, 1305 Wilson Rd. The family suggests that memorial contributions may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church Building Fund, 201 Cedar St., Smithfield, Va. 23430 or The Peninsula S.P.C.A., 523 J. SPENCER
Winton E. Spencer, 80, of Richmond, died December 16, 2001. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Pauline Barden Spencer; his children, Winton Jr. and his wife, Betty, Jean S. Martin, Charles and his wife, Debi, Gail S. Glass, Thomas M. and his wife, Janet Z., Mary S. Hall and her husband, Stephen B.; 11 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Spencer was a lifetime member of Knights of Columbus Council 395 and a former member of St. Paul's Parrish for 54 years. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with a Christian Wake service being held at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. Bridget's Catholic Church. Interment Mt. Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the National Parkinson's website, www.parkinson.org.

SPITTLE
0 R UMAX PL-II V1.4 [4] Esther K. Spittle, age 80, of Richmond, died Monday, December 10, 2001. She was born in Spion Kop, Montana, then lived in Washington, D.C. and Germany before settling in Richmond in 1955. She retired from Government Service after 32 years. Esther and her husband, John J. Spittle Jr. (1921-1996), celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1996. She is survived by her children, John J. Spittle III and his wife, Susan of York, Pa., and Sandra D. Spittle of Richmond; a sister, Sophie K. Parkhurst of Washington, D.C.; a niece, June P. Genua and her husband, Robert of Alexandria, Va.; a nephew, John L. Parkhurst and his wife, Nancy and their children, Andrea and Matthew of Frederick, Md.; and a niece, Kim Marie Evans and her children, Brian and Bethany of Great Falls, Montana. The viewing will be at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 19, followed by funeral services at 11 a.m. Graveside services and burial will be at Quantico National Cemetery at 2 p.m. on the same day.

STIEBEL
Abner Bernard Stiebel, 86, of Richmond, died Saturday, December 15, 2001. He was retired from Riverdale Drapery Fabrics and a former salesman for S&K Clothing. He was a retired Air Corps veteran of World War II. In addition to his wife, Estelle, he is survived by his sons, Michael of Avon, Conn. and William of Winchester, Va.; five grandchildren, Matthew, Jessica, Joshua, Samuel, and Sally; his brother, Leonard of New York. A funeral service will be held at Beth-El Cemetery in Forest Lawn at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Beth Shalom Home of Central Virginia.

STORKE
Shirley King Storke, 88, of Shiloh in King George County, died Saturday, December 15, 2001 at her home. Born in the Jersey area of King George, she was the widow of Dwight C. Storke Sr. She had retired after 32 years as a school teacher in King George County, where she taught first and second grade. She was a lifelong member of Shiloh Baptist Church where she was active in the Women's Missionary Union and taught Sunday School for many years. Survivors include her son, Dwight C. Storke Jr. of Shiloh; her daughter, Brenda J. Storke of Richmond; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nepehws. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, December 18, 2001 at 2 p.m. in Shiloh Baptist Church with Rev. Charles Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green, Monday, 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Shiloh Baptist Church Building Fund, 13457 Kings Highway, King George, Va. 22485.

STUTTS
Odell Stutts, 77, of Richmond, passed away in his home December 15, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Alice Wright Stutts and is loved by her children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Muriel "Bee" Stutts, and is survived by a son, Bob of Houston, Texas; a son, Jim and his wife, Cindy of Richmond; a daughter, Lisa and her husband, Mike Peters; and three grandchildren, all of Culpeper, Va. He is also survived by a sister, Jessie Lee and brother-in-law, Wallace B. Knight; brother, Paul and wife, Helen; brother, Roland; and numerous nieces and nephews, all of North Carolina. A strong man, beloved husband, devoted father and lover of the outdoors, he was born in North Carolina, a 1955 graduate of the University of North Carolina and a World War II veteran. Odell Stutts was a member of Woodland Heights Baptist Church and a retired Cub Scout Master with the Robert E. Lee Council. He retired from Philip Morris after 30 years of service in April 1995. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, and where funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. Interment follows in Dale Memorial Park. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Woodland Heights Baptist Church, Springhill and 31st Avenues, Richmond, Va. 23225.
