John W. Bradshaw Sr.
BAKERSVILLE, N.C. -- John William Bradshaw Sr., 94, Relief Road,
Green Mountain, N.C., died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, in
Johnson City Medical Center.
He was a native of Yancey County, a retired Postmaster and merchant, and a former employee of Massengill Pharmaceutical Company of Bristol Tennessee. He was a member of Brummetts Creek Church of the Brethren where he had served as deacon, teacher and Sunday school superintendent.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Iona Statzer Bradshaw.
Survivors include a daughter, Julia B. Deyton,
Green Mountain; a son, Dr. John W. Bradshaw Jr.,
Johnson City; and six grandchildren.

Joseph E. Buskell
MARION -- Joseph Edward "Joe" Buskell, 83, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, in Smyth County Community Hospital.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Zenna Harrington Buskell.
Survivors include a son, Daniel Buskell, Marion; four sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

Ralph E. Carty
Ralph E. Carty, 72, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, in Wellmont Hospice House, Bristol Tennessee.
He was a native of Anawalt, W.Va., and a resident of Southwest Virginia and East Tennessee most of his life. He had been a resident of Blountville for the past ten years.
He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, was retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation with 37 years of service in the Staunton-Richmond area, and was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia
Johnson Carty.
Survivors include a son, James A. Carty, Arvada, Colo.; a daughter, Cathy Carty Newcombe, Drakes Branch, Va.; a sister, Ann Nickels, Mendota, Va.; four brothers, William L. Carty, Hampton, James H. Carty and Mike Carty, both of Bristol Tennessee, and Joe Carty, Bluff City; four grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Betty L. Elam
WISE -- Betty L. Elam, 70, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998, in Duffield Adult Nursing Home, Duffield.
She was a member of Wise Trinity Methodist Church.
Survivors include a sister, Nancy Mayes, Hampton, Va.; two brothers, William Elam, Charlotte, N.C., and James W. Elam, Wise.

Angelena W. Gauther
POUND -- Angelena West Shimonek "Boots" Gauther, 66, formerly of Pound, died Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, at her home in Mooresville, Ind.
She was the widow of Stephen Shimonek.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Kevin (Sandie) McGrath, Glastonbury, Conn.; two sons, Steve Shimonek, Mooresville, and James Gauther, Glastonbury; a sister, Mrs. Edd (Alene) Logan, Pound; three brothers, Paul West, Prescott, Ariz., Robert West, Wise, and Bill West, Bristol Virginia; and four grandchildren.
Mrs. Gauther was cremated Nov. 11, 1998, in Shirley Brothers Funeral Home.

RICHMOND -- Annie Belle Lingerfelt Graybeal, 92, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998.

Clarence Meade
CASTLEWOOD -- The Rev. Clarence Meade, 73, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, in Russell County Medical Center, Lebanon.
He was a native of Russell County, a U.S. Army veteran, a retired employee of Clinchfield Coal Company and a member of UMWA Local No. 7950. He was an Independent Freewill Baptist minister.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret Meade; a daughter, Mildred Price, Church Hill; three sons, Farrell Meade, Cleveland, Va., Denver Meade and Gordon Meade, both of Castlewood; a brother, Hoover Meade, Roanoke; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

William P. Orr
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- William Preston Orr, 90, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998.
He was a member of Main Street Baptist Church and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He was a member of NRA and Boy's Town.
Survivors include his wife, Florence P. Orr; a son, James E. Keyser Jr; two brothers, R.L. Orr and Eugene Orr; three sisters, Lillian Carver, Sip Trent and Margaret Bowers; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday in Jacksonville with burial in Evergreen Cemetery.

Ralph D. Quales
Ralph D. "Sis" Quales, 84, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, in NHC Healthcare of Bristol.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Bristol Tennessee, was manager of Ralph's Confectionery for 32 years and retired from Gordon Garment Company. He was a member of Central Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie F. Quales, Bristol Tennessee; two daughters, Roma Jean Cross and Brenda L. Allison, both of Bristol Tennessee; two sisters, Frances Walden, Bristol Virginia, and Grace Isley, Hartford, Iowa; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

William J. Riner
KINGSPORT -- William James "Billy" Riner, 69, of 1924 Bowater Drive, died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, in Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center.
He was a native of Russell County, had lived most of his life in the Kingsport-Bristol area, and was a member of Riner's Tabernacle Baptist Church, where he served as church trustee for several years.
He was a U.S. Army veteran having served three years in Japan prior to and during the Korean War. He was employed with Chrysler Corp. in Rock Island, Ill., and with Allied Chemicals Company, Richmond. He served several years at each company and retired from Allied in 1970.
Survivors include two sons, William James "Billy" Riner Jr., Bristol Virginia, and Jimmy Riner, Indianapolis; a daughter, Sandy Kay Dale, Kingsport; a stepson, Joey Thomas Smith, Bristol Tennessee; three sisters, Mrs. Joe (Pauline) Crowley, Mrs. Jerry (Clara) McFarland and Mrs. Kenneth (Glenna) Allen, all of Gray; four brothers, John H. Riner, Daniel Paul Riner and Stephen D. Riner, all of Kingsport, and Joseph Lynn Riner, Moline, Ill.; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
