LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Virginia Whitaker Fann, 87, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, in Homestead Nursing Center, Lexington.
She was a native of Bristol Virginia and had resided in Lexington for the past 40 years.
She was President of Shieldall Company, Inc., a member of Zonta International, the American Legion Auxiliary and La Societe De Femme Cobane 29. She was a commissioned Kentucky Colonel.
Mrs. Fann was a member of Oak Grove Church and the widow of Harold W. Fann.
Survivors include a daughter, Mildred Markham Swift, Bristol Tennessee; a sister, Melton Whitaker Harrington, Bluff City; a granddaughter, Suzanne Swift Senter, Bristol Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews.

George W. Foote Sr.
George W. Foote Sr., 73, of 849 Clinton Ave., Bristol, Va., died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was a native of Marion, had lived most of his life in Bristol and was a member of Lee Street Baptist Church.
He retired from Trailways Bus Company, was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and a member of VFW Post No. 4667.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Mary L. Foote; five sons, William M. Foote, Donald G. Foote, Gary E. Foote, Harry P. Foote and Keith L. Foote, all of Bristol; three daughters, Mrs. Kathryn A. Chebo, Aurora, Colo., Ms. Wanda L. Foote, Harrisburg, Pa., and Mrs. Tia Staadt, Tamarac, Fla.; his mother, Mrs. Kathleen Foote, Marion; 24 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two aunts.

COEBURN -- Douglas McArthur "Mack" Harvey, 56, died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, at the home of his brother in Coeburn.
He was a member of Banner Revival Center, Coeburn, and a former carpenter and brick mason.
Survivors include a son, Douglas Aaron Harvey, Columbus, Ohio; a daughter, Shannon Harvey, Castlewood; four brothers, Kermit Harvey, Rogersville, Tenn. Roger L. Harvey and Rex Allen Harvey, both of Coeburn, and Eddie Harvey, Richmond; five sisters, Joann McConnell, Richmond, Linda Brickey, Brenda Wade and Nadine Finch, all of Coeburn, and Virginia Adkins, Elizabethton, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews.

KINGSPORT -- Carrie Louise Hurley, 77, of Hillside Manor Rehabilitation Center, formerly of the St. James Community, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, in Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport.
She was a retired teacher with the Greene County School System after 35 years, a member of Meadow Creek Presbyterian Church, and the widow of Dr. Estel C. Hurley.
She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority and the Retired Teachers Association.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Jack W. (Mary Elizabeth) Bowling, Kingsport; a son, Charles Allen Hurley, Bristol Virginia; her mother, Minnie Ward, Greene County; a sister, Mrs. Bobby (Margaret) Kirk, Greeneville; a brother, Ivan Ward, Greene County; six grandchildren; a great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

Grover C. Jackson
JEWELL RIDGE, Va. -- Grover Cleveland Jackson, 78, died Thursday, Dec. 10, 1998, in a Richlands hospital.
He was a native of Belfast, Va., had lived in Jewell Ridge Camp since 1950, and attended the Pentecostal Faith Temple.
Mr. Jackson was a retired coal miner with the Jewell Ridge Coal Corporation, Jewell Valley, Va., and a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local Union No. 7327, Jewell Valley.
He was a decorated combat veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Queen Victoria Jackson; four daughters, Mrs. Bev (Judy) McKinney Jr., Whitewood, Ms. Rita Carol Jackson of the home, Ms. Victoria Lynn Jackson and Mrs. John (Sherry) Norton, both of Bluefield, W.Va.; a son, Jim Jackson, Pounding Mill; three sisters, Mrs. Louise Hale and Mrs. Francis Bloodworth, both of Thomasville, N.C., and Mrs. Alice Gillespie, Doran, Va.; four brothers, Andrew "Stone" Jackson, Pikeville, Ky., Harry "Cotton" Jackson, Cedar Bluff, Bill Jackson, Jewell Ridge, and Woodrow "Woody" Jackson, Thomasville, N.C.; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

NORTON -- Mrs. Laura G. Johnston, 103, of 138 Kentucky Ave., died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, at her home.
She was a native of Castlewood and had lived in Banner, Va., for 30 years, and Norton for the last 59 years.
She was a homemaker and a member of Trinity Life Center Church, Coeburn.
She was the widow of James Andrew Johnston.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Susie Kennedy, Coeburn, Mrs. Kathleen Thomas, Bristol Virginia, and Mrs. Marie Ramey, Norton; three sons, Roy Johnston, Watsonville, Calif., Cecil Johnston, Hazel Park, Mich., and Pearl Johnston, Norton; 21 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Meda Monk, Pxaftown, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

Emerson L. Kirby Sr.
RICHLANDS -- Dr. Emerson Lynn Kirby Sr., 72, of 400 Lake Park Drive, died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, at his home.
He was a native of Hamlet, N.C., had made his home in the Richlands area for the past 43 years, and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He was a 1943 graduate of Victoria High School, a 1949 chemical engineer graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute, and a 1954 graduate of the Medical College of Virginia.
Dr. Kirby was a well respected family physician serving 38 years with Clinch Valley Clinic and Clinch Valley Physicians, retiring in 1993. Most currently, he was Chief at the Kirby Farm, in Doran, Va.
He was a member and elder of Richlands First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), where he served as Sunday School teacher and trustee. He was a past member of the Richlands Rotary Club, a member of the American Academy of Physicians and the Virginia American Angus Association.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Patricia Hagy Kirby; five daughters, Mrs. David (Susan) Raines, Breaks, Va., Mrs. Ed (Beth) Goforth, Richlands, Mrs. Jeff (Jo) Cronce, Tazewell, Mrs. Bob (Chris) Moir, Kirby Farm, Doran, and Mrs. Frank (Ruth) Forrest, Abingdon; a son, E.L. "Kip" Kirby Jr., Kirby Farm, Doran; and 15 grandchildren.

KINGSPORT -- Emma Lee Botts Poore died Wednesday, Dec. 9, 1998, in Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport.
She was a native of Washington County, Va., moved to Kingsport in 1938, and retired from JCPenney after over 27 years of service in sales.
She was a member of Glenwood Baptist Church and the widow of Thomas Poore.
Survivors include a son, Tommy P. Poore, Kingsport; a foster son, Lawrence Patty, Chattanooga; a stepdaughter, Betty Birdwell, Blountville; a sister, Mrs. Bill (Marie) South, Abingdon; a brother, Earl Botts, Abingdon; and several nieces and nephews.
