SALTVILLE -- Carl Slate, 83, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999, in Smyth County Community Hospital, Marion.
He was retired from Olin Mathieson, was a Smyth County Building Inspector, and was employed for 15 years with the Smyth County Health Department. He was a member of the Madam Russell Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Beulah Farris Slate; a son, James Wade Slate, Winnsboro, S.C.; three daughters, Joy S. Brooks and Monie Paige DeBord, both of Saltville, and Elizabeth A. Slate, Virginia Beach; a brother, Lawrence Slate, Honaker; 11 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and 32 foster children.

Eannes Slone
GRUNDY -- Eannes Slone, 77, of the Home Creek Section, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, in Buchanan General Hospital.
He was a native of Steele, Ky., had been a resident of Buchanan County for several years. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, receiving the Purple Heart.
He was a disabled coal miner.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Causby Fuller Slone; six daughters, Romainua Kaye, Pinellas Park, Fla., Aldeana Shortridge and Dola C. Payne, both of Big Rock, Va., Gloria Elswick, Conaway, Va., Deborah A. McNutt and Brenda K. Baker, both of Grundy; two sons, Jerry B. Slone, Bristol Tennessee, and Allen D. Slone, Big Rock, Va.; three sisters, Patricia Moles, Pebbles, Ohio, Marie Law, Beckley, W.Va., and Alpha Wolford, Steele; 16 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

John A. Wright Sr.
ABINGDON -- John A. "Bud" Wright Sr., 75, died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was a native of Switchback, W.Va., had lived in Welch, W.Va., for 22 years -- where he graduated from Welch High School in 1941 -- before moving to Abingdon in 1960.
He was a member of Abingdon Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He was in the Adult Sanctuary Choir, was a church greeter and attended the Harry Denton Sunday school class.
Mr. Wright was U.S. Army Staff Sgt. of World War II, serving with the 243rd Port Company in the South Pacific. He took part in the invasion of Lehti and was stationed in the Philippines until his discharge in 1946.
He was a member of the Abingdon Masonic Lodge No. 48, and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was sales manager with Washington Motor Company and retired as salesman with Wallace Oldsmobile in 1985. Mr. Wright was a salesman with Wright Equipment Company, was employed with Forest Hills Memory Gardens as a family service counselor, and with Farris Funeral Service as a funeral assistant.
Survivors include his wife, Joyce Jennings Wright; two sons, John Andrew Wright Jr., Abingdon, and Bradley French Wright, Logan, W.Va.; two daughters, Karen Sue Wright Wilson, Durham, N.C., and Robin Elizabeth Wright, Abingdon; a sister, Pauline Grubb, Welch, W.Va.; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Phyllis I. Anderson
WICHITA FALLS, Texas -- Mrs. Phyllis Irene Thomas Anderson, 48, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, at her home.
She had lived most of her life in Abingdon and had lived in Texas for the past five years.
Survivors include her husband, Lawrence Anderson; a son, Danny L. Thomas, Korea; three brothers, Paul S. Thomas, Abingdon, Clark "Buzz" Thomas, Meadowview, and William Jack Thomas, Dry Ridge, Ky.; three sisters, Mrs. Selma Camper, High Point, N.C., Mrs. Beulah Cook, Huntsville, Ala., and Mrs. Annie Delp, Abingdon; and three grandchildren.

Margaret R. Branch
Margaret "Jolly" Rogers Branch, of Bristol Tennessee died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999.
She was a native of Bristol Virginia, had resided in Hawaii, Colorado Springs, Colo., New York, Germany, Washington, D.C., Florida, Alabama, New Mexico and California.
She received a bachelor of arts degree form the University of Michigan, and was the widow of Irving L. "Twig" Branch.
Survivors include two sons, Col. Christopher Irving Branch, USAF (Ret.), Omaha, Neb., and Richard Dulaney Branch, San Diego; a brother, Lt. Col. John Kelly Rogers, USFA (Ret.), Bristol; and four grandchildren.

Watson E. Church
POUND -- Watson Earl Church, 77, died Saturday, Jan. 23, 1999, in Norton Community Hospital, Norton.
He was of the Freewill Baptist faith, a retired miner and a U.S. Army veteran.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Marie Branham Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Opal Marie Zornes, Lusby, Md.; two sisters, Nannie Austin, Big Stone Gap, and Gertrude Profitt, Vero Beach, Fla.; three brothers, Willard Church, Jenkins, Ky., Omer J. Church, Kansas City, and Leonard Church, Vero Beach, Fla.; a grandchild; and a great-grandchild.

Nannie M. Lane
EAST STONE GAP -- Nannie Mae Hale Lane, 85, of the Baum Hollow community, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, in Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center.
She was a native of Wise County, had lived most of her life in East Stone Gap and attended the Durham's Chapel Church, in Crackers Neck community.
She was the widow of W.W. Lane.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Margaret Clendenon, Radford, and Willie Mae Lawson, East Stone Gap; a son, Jackie Ray Lane, East Stone Gap; three sisters, Charlotte Rhodes, Louvina Bond and Ester Collins, all of Kingsport; two brothers, Alfred Hale, Dallas, and J.E. Hale, Austin, Texas; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Clarence H. Leonard
Clarence H. Leonard, 82, of 1412 Norway Drive, Bristol, Va., died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, in National Health Care of Bristol.
He was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area and retired from the H.P. King Company. He was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucy M. Leonard.
Survivors include a son, Clarence "Junior" Leonard, Bristol Virginia; two daughters, Betty Thompson, Bristol Virginia, and Barbara Nidiffer, Bristol Tennessee; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Sally Musick
PRINCETON, W.Va. -- Sally Musick, 69, of 120 12th Street Extension, formerly of Bradenton, Fla., died Friday, Jan. 22, 1999, in Princeton Community Hospital.
She was a native of Splashdam, Va., a graduate of Concord College, in Athens, and an elementary school teacher. She began her teaching career in Raven Elementary School, in Raven, Va., and retired from the Sarasota County, Florida, school system in 1996.
Survivors include a son, Richard Keith Bowen, Ashland, Ohio; a brother, Farley E. "Bud" Musick, Princeton; and two grandsons, Jack Yonkovski and Adam Yonkovski, both of Ashland, Ohio.

Mary A. Owens
ABINGDON -- Mary Alma Owens, 77, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 1999, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
She was a native of Washington County and had resided in Washington, D.C., Abingdon, Roanoke and the Lynchburg areas where she was employed with the United States District Court, Abingdon, Va., and the U.S. Justice Department, Washington, D.C. She retired from the James H. Quillen Veteran Affairs Medical Center, Mountain Home, Tenn., with 23 years of service.
She was a member of the Anglican Catholic Church of the Good Shephard, a member of the Abingdon Senior Center, the Johnston Memorial Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and the Retired Federal Employees.
Survivors include a sister, Betsy K. Owens, Abingdon; and a brother, James L. Owens, Kingsport.
