SALTVILLE//ROANOKE -- Lucille B. Anderson died Thursday, April 1, 1999, in Roanoke Community Hospital.
She had lived in Roanoke for the past three years with her son.
She was the widow of Eugene E. Anderson, and a member of the Main Street Christian Church.
Survivors include a son, David C. Anderson of Roanoke; a daughter, Carol Jean McAllister of Mobile, Ala.; a sister, June Farris of Saltville; two grandchildren, Jeff McAllister and Michelle Shall; and two great-grandchildren.

ABERDEEN, Md. -- Earl Leon Barnette, 72, formerly of Tazewell County, Va., died Monday, March 29, 1999, in Harford Memorial Hospital in Havre de Grace, Md.
He was a native of Tazewell, a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, and was a Civil Service Supervisor of Land Management at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Md.
Survivors include his wife, Estella G. Cochran Barnette; and a sister, Helen Harrison of Salem, Va.

SALEM, Va. -- Claude William Brooks, 52, formerly of Trammel, and Dickenson County, died Thursday, April 1, 1999, in the Veterans Administration Care Center in Salem.
He was a native of Virginia, a U.S. Army veteran, and a retired maintenance man.
Survivors include two daughters, Theresa Ferguson of Salem, and Claudia Biggs of Vinton, Va.; two brothers, Richard Brooks of Alexandria, Va., and Vernon Brooks of New Castle, Va.; a sister, Vivian Hardy of Greta, Va.; and two grandchildren.

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. -- Mary Myrtle Street Calhoun, 82, formerly of Rowe, Va., died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at the home of her granddaughter in White Sulphur Springs.
She was a native of Skaggs, Va., and had resided in White Sulphur Springs since 1974, moving there from Richmond.
She was formerly employed in the maintenance department of Hanover Shoe Company in White Sulphur Springs and was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church.
She was the widow of Joseph Berry Street and Robert Calhoun.
Survivors include three daughters, Dorothy Cunningham of White Sulphur Springs, Ervin Blankenship of August, W.Va., and Lula Roland of Aberdeen, Md.; two sisters, Marie Byrd of Cedar Bluff, and Ellen Byrd of Bandy, Va.; two stepsons, Herman Calhoun of Richmond, and Ronald Calhoun; a stepdaughter, Ruby Gast of Richmond; 24 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; 12 step-grandchildren; three step-great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

MARION -- John Carson "J.C." Gillespie, 81, died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at his home.
He was a native of Rich Valley, Va., and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 35th Division.
He was employed for 40 years as a coal miner with Lake Superior Coal Company, and later with U.S. Steel No. 2 Mines, in Gary, W.Va.
Mr. Gillespie was a member of the Chatham Hill First Church of God in Rich Valley, Va., and the Francis Marion VFW Post No. 4667 in Marion.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Kathleen Gillespie; two sons, John C. Gillespie Jr. of Mooresville, N.C., and Robert Dean of Rural Retreat, Va.; two daughters, Debra Shae Lowe of Marion, and Rebecca Darlene Seymour of Rich Valley; two sisters, Lettie Gillespie of Marion, and Ruby Schwartz of Baltimore; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was a master craftsman in the art of woodworking and was known throughout Washington and Smyth Counties for these skills.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, and attended Madam Russell United Methodist Church.
