Richard D. Dusch

SUFFOLK -- Richard Dale Dusch, 69, of the 4500 block of Starcher Court, died Sept. 19, 1998, at his residence.

He was a native of Dubois, Pa., a son of the late Robert E. and Dorothy Toote Dusch. He retired after 21 years of service in the U.S. Air Force and was a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam wars. He also retired after 21 years of working as an electronics supervisor at Capus Automation. Mr. Dusch was a member of Tidewater Central Church of the Nazarene, Virginia Beach, and was attending Liberty Baptist Church, Suffolk.

Survivors include his wife, Grace Irene Dusch; a daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Scott Hughes of Virginia Beach; a son, Richard Dale Dusch Jr. of Suffolk; grandsons, Drew, Kyle, Brandon and Nicholas Hughes of Virginia Beach; sisters, Eloise Ross of Dubois, Pa., and Eleanor Thomas of Clearfield, Pa.; and brothers, Robert Dusch of Johnston, Pa., and Keith Dusch of Falls Creek, Pa.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Harrell Funeral Home by the Rev. T.A. Powell. Interment will be in Colonial Grove Memorial Park, Virginia Beach. Friends may join the family from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and other times at the residence. Memorial contributions may be made to Liberty Baptist Church, Vision Becoming Reality, Building Fund, P.O. Box 1055, Suffolk, Va. 23439.

Marie C. Day

SMITHFIELD -- It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone. A part of us went with you, the day God called you home. Every day we've missed you, and many times we've cried. If our love could have saved you, you never would have died. To some you are forgotten, to others a part of the past, but for us who loved and lost you, you memory will forever last.

Marie C. Day, 84, a 53-year resident of Isle of Wight County, died Sept. 17, 1998, at Obici Hospital, Suffolk.

She was a retired teacher for the Isle of Wight County Public School System with 38 years of service. Mrs. Day was a member of Zion Baptist Church in Portsmouth where she was a former choir member. She was a member of the Teachers Association; Senior Choir director, Beta Club director and Senior Class Sponsor of Smithfield High School; and participated in the Reading Tutor Program at Pretlow Cultural Center. She earned her bachelor of science degree from Virginia State College and master of arts degree from Columbia University.

The widow of Eley Day, she is survived by her daughter, Marion D. Edwards and her husband, Willie J., of Ivor; a brother, Vernon Weston of Portsmouth; four grandchildren, Michael Edwards of Pasadena, Md., Brian Edwards of Charlotte, N.C., Stephanie Hill and Jeremy Edwards, both of Smithfield; great-grandchildren, Ariel Edwards, Kyra Edwards, Amber Edwards and Alexis Hill; a nephew, Clarence Weston of Portsmouth; a niece, Marie Lee; and a sister-in-law, Ursula T. Day of Smithfield.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Mount Sinai Baptist Church Cemetery, Ivor, by the Rev. J. Michael Little. Please send all floral arrangements to Fisher Funeral Home, Portsmouth. The family will assemble at 207 Astrid St., Smithfield, at noon.

Kenneth J. Bowen

WILLIS WHARF -- Kenneth Jackson ``Jackie" Bowen, 60, died Sept. 19, 1998. A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Doughty Funeral Home.

Wallace T. Bass

EDENTON -- Wallace Thomas Bass, 78, of the 700 block of Chambers Ferry Road, died Saturday, Sept. 19, 1998, at his son's home.

A native of Chowan County, Mr. Bass was the husband of the late Ruth Lee Cartwright Bass and son of the late John Thomas and Evie Pierce Bass. He was a member of the Macedonia Baptist Church and a retired farmer and carpenter.

Mr. Bass is survived by his son, Thomas Sherwood Bass and his wife, Lorraine, of Edenton; two sisters, Jesse B. Bunch and Eunice B. Bunch, both of Tyner, N.C.; his brother, Sanford Bass of Edenton; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two daughters, Barbara Bass Busby and Carolyn Bass Goodwin.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in the Macedonia Baptist Church by the Rev. Bob Young. Burial will follow in Beaver Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home of Sherwood and Lorraine Bass, 728 Chambers Ferry Road, Edenton. Memorials may be made to the Macedonia Baptist Church Building Fund, 1004 Macedonia Road, Edenton, N.C. 27932 or to the Albemarle Hospice, P.O. Box 189, Elizabeth City, N.C. 27909. Evans Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

H. Clifton Edwards

AHOSKIE -- H. Clifton Edwards, 83, of Route 2, died Sept. 18, 1998. A funeral will be at 2 p.m. today in Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie.

Furman Garris

EDENTON -- Furman ``Bert" Garris, 69, of the 1900 block of Arapahoe Trail, died Saturday, Sept. 19, 1998, in Chowan Hospital.

A native of Johnston County, N.C., Mr. Garris was the husband of Maybelle Horton Garris of Edenton, N.C., and the son of the late Ollie Benjamin and Carrie Lee Garris. Mr. Garris was retired from the U.S. Navy with 26 years of service and was a member of the Bandon Chapel in Arrowhead.

Surviving other than his wife are his two daughters, Paula Smallwood of Edenton and Sherry Garris of Suffolk; his son, Colin Garris of Chesapeake; two sisters, Annette Barbour of Ellerby, N.C., and Lacy Williams of Clayton, N.C.; four grandchildren, Myra Smallwood and Robert Smallwood, both of Smithfield, N.C., Ashleigh Bailey of Virginia Beach and Willow Avery of Suffolk; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in the Evans Funeral Home Chapel with military and Masonic rites. The family will receive friends one hour before services at the funeral home.

Woodrow D. Youst

KNOTTS ISLAND -- Woodrow Daniel Youst, 73, of the 200 block of Knotts Island Road, died Sept. 17, 1998, in a local hosptial.

Born in Morgantown, W.Va., the son of the late James and Mary Youst, he was a commercial painter.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Bell Casteel of Morgantown, W.Va.; a daughter, Bernice Gallagher of Knotts Island, N.C.; two grandchildren, Tammy DeBerry and son-in-law, Scott DeBerry, of Newport News, Frank Daniel Gallagher and daughter-in-law, Robin Papson of Virginia Beach; two great-grandchildren, Anthony DeBerry of Newport News and Devon Papson of Virginia Beach; two sisters; and two brothers.

A memorial service will be conducted at noon Monday in Knotts Island Baptist Church with Pastor Allen Mahan officiating. Twiford Colonial Chapel, Great Bridge, Chesapeake, is handling arrangements.

Willie R. Perry

COLERAIN -- Willie Reed Perry died Sept. 18, 1998. A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Zion Hill Baptist Church, Colerain. Reynolds Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge.

Margaret H. Lankford

ALEXANDRIA -- Margaret Holland Lankford, 80, distinguished teacher and beloved mother, died Friday, Sept. 18, 1998.

The Alexandria resident was born and raised in Nassawadox, Va., the youngest of nine children of Barton D. and Martha Mills Holland. She graduated from Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C., in 1939 and was married in 1948 to Vernon T. Lankford. She was an outstanding educator and taught English and reading to hundreds of students from Birds Nest Elementary to Hargrave military Academy.

For 40 years, she and her dear husband, Vernon, made exceptional contributions to the academic, religious and cultural life of the Academy and of the town of Chatham. Mrs. Lankford was past president of the Chatham Garden Club and taught primary department children at Chatham Baptist Church.

She is survived by two sons, Tom of Alexandria and Richard of Springfield; and five grandchildren, Taylor, Cooper, Hadley, Claire and Forrest.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Franktown Cemetery on the Eastern Shore. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Lankford Fellowship at Hargrave military Academy, the American Cancer Society or to the Hospice of Northern Virginia. B.D. Holland Funeral Home, Nassawadox, is in charge.

Lizzie C. Wright

RICHMOND -- Lizzie C. Wright, 87, of the 3100 block of Griffin Ave., died Sept. 16, 1998, at her home in Richmond.

Born in Emporia, Va., she was a member of Seventh Day Sabbath Apostolic Church in Richmond and was a former member of Little Grove Baptist Church in Suffolk.

The widow of Eddie Wright, she is survived by her daughter, Mary L., and her husband, Herman McCullough Sr., of Portsmouth; two sisters, Sallie Williams and Gracie Hudson, both of Richmond; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, including a devoted niece who cared for her, Mary Ruffin of Richmond, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Wednesday at Zion Bethel United Church of Christ, Portsmouth, by the Rev. D.A. Peace. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home will begin at noon Tuesday. The family will be at the home of her daughter, Mary L. McCullough, 1815 Lansing Ave., Portsmouth, and will assemble there for the procession.

Robert E. Edwards

MT. HOLLY, N.J. -- Robert Earl Edwards, 60, an attorney, died of an apparent heart attack on Aug. 17, 1998.

He lived in New Jersey for many years and maintained a cottage at Nags Head, N.C. He was the son of the late Rev. Earl B. Edwards and Rachel Copeland Edwards, and the stepson of the late Raymond Mizelle of Windsor, N.C. Mr. Edwards grew up in towns throughout North Carolina in which Rev. Edwards served Methodist churches.

He is survived by four children, Donald Tayloe Edwards of Schwenksville, Pa., Judith Ladd of Sicklerville, N.J., Jeffrey Edwards of Lexington, Ky., and Amanda Edwards of Haddonfield, N.J.; four grandchildren and a sister, Sarah Frances Fedota of Atlanta.

A service was held at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, Cherry Hill, N.J., on Aug. 21.

Jackie George

BILOXI, Miss. -- Jackie George, 72, died Sept. 18, 1998. The Howard Avenue Chapel of Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home is in charge.

Charles J. Smith Jr.

SEATTLE -- Charles Jackson Smith Jr., 67, a longtime resident of the Seattle area, passed away Sept. 18, 1998.

He is survived by his three daughters, three sons, numerous grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A wonderful father and grandfather -- with loving memories your family.

Flora E. Smith

CRAB ORCHARD, W.Va. -- Flora E. ``Flo" Smith, 82, formerly of Norfolk, died Sept. 17, 1998.

Mrs. Smith was born in Portsmouth County, Va., and was the widow of Hiriam L. Smith. She was a member of Burroughs Memorial Baptist Church, and was a hairdresser for 35 years.

Survivors include her special friend and caregiver, Christine J. Lindsay of Crab Orchard, W.Va. She was preceded in death by her parents, Josh and Alice Culpepper.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. today in Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, by the Rev. Donald Harris. The burial will take place on Monday at 1 p.m. in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk.

Richard W. Gardner

CHESAPEAKE -- Richard William Gardner, 52, of the 4000 block of Hawksley Drive, died Aug. 30, 1998, in Richmond, Va.

A native of Portsmouth, he was retired as a central office technician from Bell Atlantic Corporation after 30 years of service. He was a member of Jackson Memorial Baptist Church, Telephone Pioneers of America and Communication Workers of America.

Survivors include his wife, Betsy T. Gardner; two daughters, Aimee G. Van Huizen of Sterling, Va., and Karen Gardner of Chesapeake; a sister, Barbara G. Valley of Bristol, Conn.; and two brothers, Linwood Gardner of Newport News and Michael Gardner of Chesapeake.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Snellings Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, by the Rev. Dr. Albert A. Peverall Jr. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Jackson Memorial Baptist Church Building Fund, 4316 Bruce Road, Chesapeake, Va. 23321.

Raymond D. Godfrey

CHESAPEAKE -- Raymond Dudley Godfrey, 75, of the 400 block of Forest Road, died Aug. 30, 1998, in Chesapeake.

Mr. Godfrey was born in Old Norfolk County and was the son of the late Raymond D. Sr. and Bessie Hall Godfrey. He was the widower of Carrie Estelle Godfrey. He was a member of Great Hope Baptist Church in Chesapeake, and was an Army veteran of World War II. He had been a carpenter for 51 years.

Survivors include his daughter, Sarah G. Bolsem of Pensacola, Fla.; two sons, Raymond D. Godfrey III of Fort Worth, Texas, and the Rev. John W. Godfrey of Chesapeake; two sisters, Allison Grant of Chesapeake and Betty Grant of Elizabeth City, N.C.; one brother, Wilson Godfrey of West Norfolk; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Great Hope Baptist Church in Chesapeake by his son, the Rev. John W. Godfrey. Interment will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park, Virginia Beach. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge. Memorial donations may be made to the Missions Fund of Great Hope Baptist Church, 1401 Battlefield Blvd. South, Chesapeake, Va. 23322.
