Gregory E. Timmons

NORFOLK -- Gregory Edward Timmons, 46, of Norfolk departed this life on Sept. 1, 1998, after a long courageous battle with cancer. Born in Norfolk, he was a retired petty officer and worked for Arcon Inc.

He is survived by his wife, Victoria Marshall Timmons; his two children, Ashley Michele and Marshall Edward Timmons of Norfolk; two sisters, Gretchen Garber and her husband, Mike, of Virginia Beach, Merrill Waldron and her husband, J.R., of Hampton; three nephews and three nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bobby and Jane Timmons of Norfolk.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel. Burial will be at 2 p.m. at the Hermitage Baptist Church Cemetery, Church View, with full military honors. The family will receive friends and family at their home this evening and at the home of Elmore and Janet Marshall on Friday after the burial. Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Betty C. Gardner

PORTSMOUTH -- Betty Jean Cherry Gardner, 66, died Sept. 1, 1998, in a local hospital.

She was a native of Portsmouth and a member of West Park Church of Christ.

Survivors include her husband, Irving R. Gardner; two daughters, Lori Simmons of Carmel, Ind., and Beth Hayes- Jones of Clarksville, Tenn.; a brother, John William Cherry of Edenton, N.C.; and three grandchildren, Carly Simmons, Erin Simmons and Stefhanie Hayes.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday at West Park Church of Christ by Mr. Keith Lewis. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel.

James W. Garnes Sr.

PORTSMOUTH -- James Webster Garnes Sr., 61, died Sept. 1, 1998, in a local hospital.

He had retired from Associated Naval Architect after 37 years of service.

Survivors include his wife, Joan M. Garnes; two daughters, Cheryl Garnes Stephens and Debora L. Garnes; four sons, James Webster Garnes Jr., Robert S. Garnes, Bryan S. Garnes and Scott C. Garnes; two sisters, Rita Adkins and Rose VanDyke; a brother, Clarence Ellis; and 12 grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, is handling arrangements.

Lola M. Hagans

PORTSMOUTH -- Lola M. Hagans, 79, of the 1700 block of Parker Ave., died Sept. 1, 1998. She was a member of Emanuel A.M.E. Church where she was an usher.

Survivors include her husband, Charlie E. Hagans Sr.; two daughters, Mary Sears and Regina Williams; three sons, Charlie Hagans Jr., Melvin S. Hagans and Tommie Hagans; two sisters, Lucinda B. Harney and Delores B. Jenkins; four brothers, Edward Busch Jr., the Rev. James M. Busch, David S. Busch and Dr. Russell M. Busch; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a devoted friend, Josie Mills.

A funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Emanuel A.M.E. Church by the Rev. James F. Mason. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery. Fisher Funeral Home is in charge.

David Hinton

PORTSMOUTH -- David ``Tip" Hinton, 49, of the 300 block of Washington St., died Sept. 1, 1998.

He was an employee of Lawrence Landscaping and a member of Emanuel A.M.E. Church.

Survivors include three sons, Ruddie G. Cooper of Springfield, Va., Glenn E. Cooper and David Ross, both of Portsmouth; his mother, Faith G. Hinton; four sisters, Pearlie M. Gilmore, Richetta Simmons, Doris Warren and Faith G. Jones, all of Portsmouth; a very special, caring and loving friend, Barbara Cuffee; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Emanuel A.M.E. Church by the Rev. James F. Mason. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery. The family will be at 3316 Killian Ave., Portsmouth. Fisher Funeral Home is in charge.

William T. Pitt Jr.

PORTSMOUTH -- William Thomas Pitt Jr., 88, of the 1300 block of Watson St., died Aug. 31, 1998.

He was retired from the Naval Ammunition Depot and the widower of Hilda C. Pitt. He was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Tes Evans; a son, Vincent C. Pitt; and two grandchildren, Victoria Pitt and Michael Pitt.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Ebenezer Baptist Church by the Rev. Ben A. Beamer. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery. Fisher Funeral Home is in charge.

Helen D. Meagher

PORTSMOUTH -- Helen D. Meagher, 76, a native of Mackinaw Island, Mich., and a resident of Portsmouth for 52 years, died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 1998, in Maryview Medical Center.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph. She is survived by her children in Portsmouth, Pat and David Ramey, and their children, Beth, Charlotte and David Jr., Barbara and JoJo Ardagna and their children, Nicole and Nick, John and Faye Meagher and their daughter, Stephanie of Oklahoma; Betty and Jerry Ewert and their son, Bryan, of Underwood, Minn., Joe and Joanne Meagher of Ypsilanti, Mich., and Peter Meagher of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a brother, Gene Krueger and his wife, Madonna, and daughter, Tommie, of Redford, Mich.

Loved by Nanny were her grandchildren, Beth Wiggs, Charlotte White, David Ramey Jr., Stephanie Parker, Nicole and Nick Ardagna, Bryan Ewert, Angel Williams and great-granddaughter, Megan Wiggs.

A private graveside service will be held at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens on Friday by the Rev. Robert Cummins. Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth, is handling arrangements. The family will receive friends at 3207 Arlington Place. In lieu of flowers, Helen requested donations be made to the American Heart Association.

Virginia Owens

PORTSMOUTH -- Anne Virginia Owens, 85, died Sept. 2, 1998, in Portsmouth.

Mrs. Owens, a native of Portsmouth, was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband of 65 years, M.A. ``Mitt" Owens; two daughters, Antoinette O. Ashworth and her husband, Dr. John S. Ashworth, of Richmond, Elaine O. Rowe and her husband, William R. Rowe, of Chesapeake; a sister, Kathryn Hancock of Tuscola, Texas; five grandchildren, Carolyn A. Ainsley and her husband, Newman Ainsley, William Ray Rowe Jr., Robert A. Rowe, Amy A. Calos and her husband, Stefan Calos, and Gary L. Rowe; three great-grandchildren, Newman Ainsley, Lauren Ainsley and Alexa Calos.

A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in Oak Grove Cemetery by the Rev. Joseph Slowik. Friends may join the family today from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.

Raymond M. Anderson Jr.

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Raymond M. Anderson Jr., 74, died Sept. 1, 1998, in a local hospital.

Born in Lima, Ohio, he was a retired captain in the U.S. Navy and was a veteran of Korea and Vietnam. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1946. He retired as commanding officer of the USS Seattle (AOE3) in June 1975.

Survivors include his wife, Katherine P. Anderson; four daughters, Katherine Baugher and Helen Gregory, both of Richmond, Mary Hudgins of Mathews, Va., and Ruth L. Anderson of Virginia Beach; and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sons, Lt. Raymond M. Anderson III and John P. Anderson.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society. Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, is handling arrangements.

Emma C. Brown

VIRGINIA BEACH -- The Rev. Emma C. Brown of the 2300 block of Seaboard Road, died Aug. 29, 1998.

A native of Princess Anne County, she was a member of Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church. She was a local elder of The Virginia A.M.E. Conference and the widow of Thomas Brown.

Survivors include five sisters, Mary E. Kimble, Mabel Wright and Lois H. Caffee, all of Virginia Beach, Velma Banton and Nannie C. Goodman, both of Norfolk; four brothers, the Rev. Harold Cason Sr. and Paul S. Cason, both of Virginia Beach, Joseph Cason of Brooklyn, N.Y., and the Rev. Clarence W. Cason of Jamaica, N.Y.; and a host of nieces, nephews, two godchildren, and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Emmaline Cason and John T. Cason.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church, Virginia Beach, by the Rev. William A. Dyson. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Community Funeral Home, Virginia Beach Chapel, is in charge.

Janell S. Doss

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Janell Gail Stafford Doss, 56, of the 700 block of Woodbox Drive, died in Pitt Memorial Hospital on Aug. 31, 1998, at 12:40 p.m.

A native of Aflex, Ky., she was a member of the Virginia Beach Church of God.

Survivors include her husband, Willard ``Jim" Doss; daughter, Ann Simmons and husband, Kenneth Simmons; daughter, Elizabeth Simpkins; son, Willard Allen Doss and wife, Lisa Doss; four grandchildren, Jim, Adam, Brian and Melissa; sister, Imogene Simpkins; brothers, Robert Stafford and Cleston Stafford; and special friends, Alice Yunt, Eddie and David Schultz, Shelby, Ryan, Sydney and Lauren. She was predeceased by a grandson, Christopher, and brothers, Franklin Stafford and Ronald Stafford.

A service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Virginia Beach Church of God, 836 Regency Drive, by Pastor Ricky Gene Hocker. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today in Altmeyer Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Rosewood Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the church's Benevolence Fund.

She will be missed very much.

Robert J. Drew

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Robert Joseph Drew, 46, passed away in a local hospital on Sept. 1, 1998. A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. today at Fellowship of the Inner Light, 620 14th St., Virginia Beach. Altmeyer Funeral Home, Virginia Beach, is handling arrangements.

Billie Jean Dunn

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Billie Jean Dunn, 65, of the 4800 block of Morris Neck Road, died Sept. 1, 1998, at her residence.

She was a native of Eckman, W.Va., and the daughter of the late Leslie and Della Godby. She was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church where she worked in the nursery on Sundays. Mrs. Dunn had personally handled all floral arrangements for church services for the last 20 years. She was a lifetime member of Creeds Rescue Squad, the Ladies Auxiliary and Princess Anne Plaza Garden Club.

The widow of Charles Dunn, she is survived by her daughter, Debra Gleason of Virginia Beach; two sons, Kenneth Dunn and his wife, Lynn, and William Dunn, all of Virginia Beach; three sisters, Helen Thornsbury, Joyce Marsh and Joan Tolley; and three granddaughters, Shelley Dunn, Lindsey Gleason and Brittany Gleason.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday in Oak Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Jerry Holcombe. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel. Memorial donations may be made to Creeds Rescue Squad.

Johnsie N. Ehrig

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Johnsie Lynn Nichols Ehrig, 61, a native of Virginia Beach and a retired realtor, walked into the light Aug. 31, 1998, after a courageous four-year battle with cancer. She will be missed deeply by all who knew and loved her.

She attended Norview High School, Class of 1955, and the College of William and Mary. She was preceded in death by her parents, Olen J. Nichols Sr. and Eddy Lynn Matthews.

Survivors include three daughters, Kay Lynn and Larry Frazier of Fayetteville, N.C., Terre Werts and Jim Rudolph of Virginia Beach, and Wendy Ehrig of Virginia Beach; a son, Lance Ehrig of Boston, Mass.; two sisters, Jewell Davis of Virginia Beach and Shirley Rowe of Florida; two brothers, Jack Nichols of Virginia Beach and Norman Nichols of Chesapeake; three grandchildren, Ryan Werts, Aaron and Lara Frazier; and a host of nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Gardner's Methodist Church. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Rogers and Breece Funeral Home in Fayetteville, N.C.
